- Author Marney Keenan discusses her new book "The Snow Killings: Inside the Oakland County Child Killer Investigation." During 1976 and 1977, four children were abducted in affluent Detroit suburbs, each held captive for days before their still-warm bodies were tossed in the snow near public roadsides.
The Oakland County Child Killer spawned panic across southeast Michigan, triggering the most extensive manhunt in U.S. history. Yet, after less than two years, the task force formed to find the killer shut down without naming one suspect. The case gathered dust for more than 30 years until a chance discovery by one victim’s family pointed to the son of a wealthy auto executive: a four-time convicted pedophile who was freed weeks before the fourth child disappeared.
Veteran journalist Marney Rich Keenan takes the reader inside the investigation revealing how law enforcement concealed evidence connecting the suspect to the children’s murders, rather than risk letting a terrorized community know they had committed a grave error: they had the suspect in custody and they let him go.
The narrative follows the trajectory of the case through two sets of eyes: a tenacious detective who uncovers evidence that hubris and political ambition sought to thwart and, in intervening chapters, the family of an eleven-year-old victim, as their grief is compounded by the discovery of a cover-up that was designed to keep them in the dark forever.
Marney Rich Keenan is an award-winning reporter and columnist, who retired in 2017 after 26 years with The Detroit News. She lives in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

My dad was a police officer in Madison Heights Michigan back when this all happened. He worked on a task force trying to find Kristine. I was still in elementary school, I'll never forget seeing my dad crying on the couch as we heard the sad news on TV of Kristine's body being found. It broke his heart, I don't think I fully understood then, I do now.
My dad went to Heaven 9 years ago, I just bet that Jesus took Kristine over to my dad so he could see her alive and happy.
I can picture a big smile in my dad's face as wrapped his arms around her.
I was abducted in Madison Heights, and got away by a man who I've always believed was Sloan. It was absolutely terrifying! The man who took me was not driving a gremlin, but a blue pickup truck with a camper on the back. This was in the winter of 77. I was too terrified to tell anyone! And at the time I thought it couldn't be the occk because it was the wrong vehicle.

Hello. I'm sorry I in no way make light of your story but I'm confused how you "believe" your kidnapper was Sloan... I myself was kidnapped by 3 individuals for other reasons than child predator stuff and to this day I could pick all 3 out of a lineup...I'm just curious how if something that traumatizing happened to you that you wouldn't "know" if it was "Sloan" or anyone else for that matter????!!!!! Sorry no disrespect, just strange to me....

This terrible evil time in life affected my life as well, my dad worked on a police task force to try to find Kristine. I'll never forget the day we watched the news and heard that Kristine's body was found. My dad was crying on the couch. Whenever I walked home from school alone in the woods I would have this fear come over me, I ran home so fast!

I'm pretty sure the killer was our neighbor in rural Livingston county. He looks exactly like the sketch, down to the part in his hair, hair length, sideburns, etc. He drove a car exactly as described, down to the pin stripe, and he had family at 10 mile and Gratiot.
Seems like the police have tunnel vision so badly that they didn't bother to check vehicle registration in neighboring counties
Also, neighbors would have gotten their news broadcast from Lansing, so they may have been unaware of the killings until later.
Has anyone ever considered that a female helping the male perpetrators in this case was involved??? How else do you explain the taking of the female children, the fact that they were not sexually assaulted and that the one young girl was murdered in exactly the way her nightmares predicted. That one bit alone speaks to a specific type of sick individual! The individual clearly got a thrill out of the psychological torture of these children. Then there is the whole bathing ritual, last meal ritual and the keeping of the children. I think it is quite possible some sick female helping these monsters decided to join in?? 🤔 I would be interested in knowing who the witnesses was who gave that very detailed description of the man talking to the last victim. These types of individuals love to insert themselves into the case. 🤔

Anyone here thinks these cases were in any measure connected to the ABC murders up in Rochester, NY? That connection was made years ago but I lost track of it, cause there were similar cases, or clusters if you will of 3 or 4 children kidnapped, raped, murdered in several states in a short period of time around those years. The Oklahoma Girl Scouts for example. Maura Murray, etc…
I am 60 and have lived in the Rochester,, NY area my entire life. Yes, these cases most definitely remind me of the ABC cases from the early 1970's.
Police was involved in these murders.
They have dna. This should have been solved years ago. Genology dna has been instrumental in identifying suspects.

What are you talking about?!! These kidnappings happened across Oakland county- in suburbs of Detroit. Birmingham is one of the wealthiest areas! Not rough areas. Actually, there are pedos in every demographic. They don’t just live in gritty areas. If you listened to this video, auto execs and politicians in high places. Maybe look into the Franklin coverup and Johnny Gosch to start. These rings appear to be all over and don’t think these sickos aren’t still active. I was born in 1978, and just learned about these cases. But I have a memory of being left but locked in our van in downriver area (Wayne county)with my 3 younger sisters in early 80s when my mom ran into a shoe store. A man pulled up next to us and was trying to get me to open the door. He kept looking over to see if our mom was coming and once she was, he drove away. I recall knowing not to open the door and am so grateful I didn’t. This left an impression on me, that these predators are everywhere and some are just waiting. My mom never left us in a car again like that and I will never do the same with my own little ones.
