For those who are complaining about the reverb on the vocals, that’s unfortunately how I got the stems, I used zero reverb on the vocals with Justice and Blackened. Will definitely reupload if I get my hands on the raw stems. Cheers!
@Lean Clean Recovering Machine Its no ones fault, but Newsted's, for sucking. He didn't adapt and tried to play F&J with a completely different band, with a completely different dynamic. His bass parts sucked and they did the best they could with it. You can hear this, in particular, in the To Live is to Die 'rough mix', where the bass is clean, clear and audible... and then the rest of the instruments come in and its overpowering and turns to wubwubwubwub mud. The band is Metallica, not Newsted. It was his job to adapt and fit in, not crybaby about how unfair everything is.
Sorry to reply to a one-year-old comment but I am 100% there with you. Both of Metallica‘s heaviest moments are off of this album in my opinion. You have the exact moment that you mentioned but I think it’s heavier live in Seattle. And then after the first hook when they return to the main riff in “harvester of sorrow“ on the live shit binge and purge version. Those are Metallica‘s two heaviest moments in my opinion. Really good call man.
Great part is that's actually the second half of the verse riff, which is just honestly really awesome to bring back without vocals for a bridge. Its so heavy!

@ADF Audio If you didn't know, they made Jason's life hell when he first joined the band. They were mourning Cliff, they were really angry, and they took it all out on him. To his credit, he hung in there, because he believed they had the same vision about where the band was going. He also wanted to play a bigger part in creating the music. Unfortunately that was when they were fighting Napster, and it was taking up all their time, and Jason wasn't a part of that. This has been done POORLY by so many other people that I almost missed this... This is BY FAR the best mix of this song that I've heard anywhere. My hats off to you!
Of course, this comes out right when it's thesis crunch-time, and I'm in the middle of editing a big video project. My condensed two cents: The drums sound immediately better! The echoing vocals are a little jarring at first, but once you get used to them, they sound fine. The bass is present, without being too loud; at times it gets drowned out slightly by the other instruments, especially the boosted drums; but considering it was basically non-present in the original master, it's still much more audible here than it was, there. Nice work!
Nah man, I love it. People have this obsession with metal having to be as raw, primitive and as dry sounding as possible. Sometimes a few effects can enhance the sound even more and can sound overall bigger and heavier. So I don't get all the complaints tbh.
While listening to this music when I was 16-17, I wondered if I would be able to enjoy the same music when I got older. I'm 46 now and nothing has changed. because metal music is universal.
I love what you did to the snare, that echoing sound... The song sounds like It's being played in a huge hallway, kinda what I always expected this song to be played in. Very impressive work! :)
being able to hear the bass gives this song/album some extra umph, and ajfa is one of my favorite metallica albums, so hearing it like this makes it even more amazing. fantastic work and thank you for uploading
Finally a remix where the guitar and the bass blend well with each other and are in the right frequency for each instrument to breathe in the mix. GOOD JOB , SIR.
I was 15 when this album came out. I was already a huge fan by then. The funny thing is though, I never had a true fist pumping, teeth gritting, headbanging vibe listening to this until now - because of this remix finally putting some life back into the original. Until now I was really just living through the Cliff Burton years. Great job. The vocals only threw me off at first, but then I became quickly used to them and it didn't seem off at all. Just the first ten seconds or so. Awesome. I want to buy this version of the album.
@@daario4278 Except Metallica doesn't mix their albums at all. Heck, the mixer of that AJFA album wasn't happy with what Metallica wanted and Lars actually told him to turn down the bass a lot. The mixer actually thought it was a joke.
This really debunks all the excuses/reasons that some of the band members gave for the inaudible bass. "It was doubling the guitar" - it blatantly isn't and has more than enough fills and counterpoints. "It shared too many frequencies with Jame's guitar/interfered with the drum sound" - it's demonstrably untrue especially here, that they can be mixed to fit together which is literally the point of mixing. I absolutely believe Steve Thompson 100% that Jason knocked it out of the park, that he had it mixed perfectly ('perfect marriage with James' guitars' were his words) and that Lars asked him to turn it down "to where you can barely hear it, then another 5-8db" for no fucking reason. Before that interview, Flemming Rasmussen reported the exact same thing in his Sound on Sound interview, as well as being disappointed that they used little to no ambient mics on the drums in the mix when what they had going before the final mix was described as much fatter sounding. Both Flemming and Steve have expressed their desire to get hold of the master tapes and mix it the way they heard it in their heads as they stated that engineering-wise, all sounds were there. I think your remixes are the closest we're ever going to get. If they were able to access the isolated tracks to make the stems for Guitar Hero, surely there'd be nothing stopping them from putting the rest out as well? The reason they gave for not remixing the album and only remastering it to "preserve the history of how it sounded" doesn't hold any water for me, because if that's how they feel about it, why put out a remaster at all??
Not only is the bass audible, but the drums sound sooooo much better Haha. I tried to master the entire and justice for Jason album. The three main pitfalls were the shitty bass drum, the mud in the rhythm guitar, and also each song was mixed down differently, making it difficult to create consistent masters. Like the one for Harvester of Sorrow was thin and nasally, maybe had phase issues. Frayed Ends of Sanity was also drenched in reverb despite the album going for a more dry garagey approach.
Hello Ahdy, first off, I bow to you. And I thank you so much! Just sounds awesome but also helps to bring the music to the younger generations! I was just thinking.... Maybe Megadeth's Holy Wars and Hangar 18 might be awesome too. ♥

Well, I listened to the song, and here's what I think of it: The song sounds so much bassier. I like it, although there's such a stark contrast with the album counterpart ( Not so bassier, more like the guitar tone ). The vocals fit much better the song, however, in some sections they don't seem to suit. Again, the song sounds bassier, thank to the addition of bass and changing how the drum sounds ( more or less ) to make it have that effect. The guitars sound almost exactly like in the album part, which is honestly good, since they didn't need a change. For what it's worth, I'd say this remix is overall better than the normal AJFA. Although, since the AJFA album was meant to be very raw, I'd say to have the original experience go listen to that one, but if you want something well produced and with flawlessly execution, you know where this song is.
