If you're on a budget and staying near Queenstown, their public transit is pretty great! The buses were pretty much always on time (I was there in Autumn so I'm not sure about winter snow affecting routes) and it's SO CHEAP. I think I spent $20NZ for 5 days which included transport from the airport almost directly to my airbnb and of course back into town. I went with a tour company to go the milford sound and another for Glenorchy since this was my first solo travel experience, but would definitely go back and spend more time there!

Good info! It seems like there isn't much public transport that takes you outside of Queenstown though, right? We're looking at visiting the wine cave that's about 25 minutes outside of Queenstown and Google Maps isn't coming up with public transit options.
I love New Zealand so much. Thank you for this video! I went to Queenstown last year and it was wonderful. I'd love to go back and do a full road trip of the south island.

Whoops I’m running late this weekend! I really hope travel bans are lifted soon as I miss the traveling a lot, my latest trip was Australia at the beginning of 2020 just before the coronavirus came🥺. I’ve got New Zealand planned around Christmas and NYE 2022/2023, as that’s the one out of 3 years I get both weeks off and COVID-19 should be gone by then. Thanks for your insights in motorhomes and their costs! I was surprised by the high costs for food and hotels, then I realised the currency difference between NZD and EUR 😅. The South island seems so beautiful 😍 it’s heaven for nature lovers! I’m glad that Matt recovered well from his anaphylaxis🤒! Thanks for sharing your tips including the local rules and law and have a great week 🤙!

I did the same drive Queenstown to Milford sound only to arrive in foggy rainy weather, so couldn't see a thing and 1meter waves. So check the weather prior to going and make sure you have the option to cancel. Alternatively, fly into Milford when the weather is good if staying in Q'twn for a couple of days.

Hello Jacqui i am planning visit in July2022. My trip is Chch-arthurpass-franz josep-haast-wanaka-tekapo-chch. I want to know what would be the weather like in mid of july. I have planned to hire aqua hybrid, do u think i need chain on tyres for driving on road. Will i have any problem driving toyota aqua on this itenary. I think you are best person to advise since you stay in west coast.

YES defintely get that full excess coverage rental insurance,
there are Kea birds in the south island that will straight up destroy your rental car and lots of bad drivers on the roads because tourists are not used to NZ roads
Oh my gosh, you're right!! I should've mentioned those cheeky Kea's! I saw them stripping rental cars at the snow fields haha they're so naughty!

Plan on renting a camper van and going in September or November 2021. To the South Island.

We have! But it was only for a week in summer and it was a very long time ago (meaning, we were new to travel) so it doesn’t feel like we did it properly! It’s still one of my favourite destinations of all time 😍 I’d love to go back and do a campervan trip!

It’s going to be very, very cold and you should definitely hire snow chains and watch tutorials on how to fit them! I don’t personally know the aqua but we’ve driven in small cars, SUVs and sedans and been fine
@@travelforphoebe do you know if i can hire a snow chain in aurthur pass or near fox glacier. The car rental company charging $30 per day just for snow chain.
No you either buy them or rent them from the car hire place. That price seems way too high. I think ours were maybe $75 for the whole time? I can’t quite remember, sorry 😊

Just hire a car and drive around south island. Make sure u grab a burger at Fergberger in Queenstown
