Have watched many travel videos, including ones you did with your brother and certainly others. This is one of the best I've seen. You covered so many things, climate, time of year, costs, culture, food, etc., super informative and helpful ! Fantastic video, thank you !
Genuinely this was one of the most helpful travel tips videos I've ever watched. I'm going to re-watch it and take actual notes. Thank you so much, Alex! You have such a talent for helping people navigate international travel and scratching that wanderlust itch. Really appreciate your thoughtfulness! :D
I just wanted to add (as a NZ local) that haggling isn't a thing at opshops ("thift stores") like you said. They function as regular stores with set prices, i'd never try to haggle at one. The only place I think you could haggle would be things like facebook marketplace, garage sales etc. Also sunblock like you said is super important especially in summer. SPF 30 at a MINIMUM.
If you want to try a meat pie get one from a BP petrol station, most of them have a Cafe called Wild Bean (really good coffee too), and they are consistently good across the country - if you're going to an independent bakery it can be hit or miss if you get a tasty pie or not. Speaking of Cafes I can't believe you didn't mention our coffee. Kiwis are big time into good coffee. We have great barista coffee everywhere. If you love coffee please don't just go to Starbucks while you're here, I'd liken that to going to Paris and only eating at McDonalds, try the local Cafes.
Love your videos Alex, been watching for a few years now and we recently moved to New Zealand (been here a month) and this has been very helpful and informative would be awesome to meet you one day but for now we love watching your and Carrie's videos!
Great video Alex especially the inclusion of Te Reo Māori. Tipping is not expected in NZ. Hope you are doing tons of hill work in your TUM training. In Rotorua we have had lots of wet days too. It's Fabulous to see tour busses back at Te Puia. Keep up the great work promoting our beautiful country
@@AlexanderAyling we are venturing to Stewart Island and Fiordland soon. I'm not looking forward to meeting the sandflies while down there. We are taking heaps of insect repellent, wearing light coloured clothing and praying our blood isn't desirable. Can't wait to see Doubtful and Milford Sounds. Fingers crossed we see a kiwi in the wild on Stewart Island while on a tour. Unfortunately it's expensive been a tourist in NZ. I'm sure the scenery will be breathtaking and so worth it

Superb video as always, just a point though, if as a tourist you say to a North Islander you are going to visit "The Mainland" there will be some good natured laughter. The term "Mainland" is only used by the Southerner's and is usually used when talking to a North Islander. (friendly banter)

I feel very prepared now to visit a country I have no immediate plans to travel to 😅. One tip for anyone wanting to learn how to distinguish NZ and Australian English: there are a few differences but the most reliable one is in the short 'i' (what linguists call the KIT vowel): it basically sounds like 'uh' in NZ English. So fish is 'fush'! I remember the first time I encountered someone with a very strong Kiwi accent, an older lady who was visiting family in Northern England. I had so much trouble understanding her! Now I know a lot more about accents and I keep wondering how much better I would do with her accent now ...

"Mild" when describing the winter there (and places like Ireland) refers to temperature. Countries with mild temperatures in the winter are typically very wet.
Marmite taste way better than Vegemite, I could be bias because I am kiwi lol but seriously Marmite is so yummy, especially on toast with melted butter and a little bit of marmite, yum 😋 🤤 or how ever much Marmite you like on your toast.
I'll be visiting from the UK in February, it will be my 6th visit to my son who lives in Whanganui which is 2/3 of the way between Auckland and Wellington. This is a great place much underrated by Kiwis. When the visibility is good you can see Ruapehu and Taranaki from the tower on Durie Hill and it actually has a lot of art deco buildings as well as the Whanganui river which you can explore by kayak or take an excursion on the historic Waimarie paddle steamer. There is much more to this 'river city' so give it a go!

Well all the flavors they make are really nice! I wish you tried Goody Goody gum drops.. I think your wife would've went bananas over it. But yeah, good on you for mentioning that flavor, you brought back memories of eating it, and where I was actually memorizing the taste in my mouth..😋Crazy!!.. I do wish you made a way longer vid covering more of the country, but thanks for what you did do.. That was awesome! Thanks again, I even learned a few things from watching your video.. Seasons in Auckland; cold and hot at the same time, hot and cold at the same time, incessantly wet and hot, incessantly wet and cold (worst two weeks of the year). Wear a t-shirt, have a jacket handy.
Your travel tips are practical and relatable! By the way, I recently stumbled upon the new V4 of the Bento Bag from Nomad Lane, and it looks like a fantastic travel companion. Have you had a chance to explore it yet? I think it could be a perfect match for your travel tips audience.

Great video, just a heads up, a number of things like Hockey Pockey ice cream exist in Australia. So almost just NZ, but almost always AUS and NZ for most things commercially sold, driving rules, slang like togs etc. FYI marmite is from the UK.
Regarding electricity you can't just plug in a 110v to a 240v plus! That adapter is only for a dual volt item. All iPhones and Mac computers are dual voltage but I'm not sure about other devices.

NZ coins are slightly different as well. There is NO Quarter. NZ does have the 20 cent piece, but not a 25 cent piece. Also there are no pennies so if you pay cash, your total is rounded to the nearest 5 cents. If you pay by debit (EFTPOS) or credit card then you pay down to the last penny!! Also if you do pay by debit card (EFTPOS) then you will also be paying currency conversion fees as well. It's cheaper to cash out one time at an ATM Machine (pay 1 conversion fee) and then pay cash for the small things like food, and when you are out in the country (rural) or at a local farmers market. Make sure that your Debit card has a PLUS logo on the back. That should allow you to use the card in an ATM machine. I found Marmite to be somewhat bitter and I grew up eating Vegemite on toast. I also LOVE L&P the fizzy soft drink - it was my fav fizzy when I was a child and an adult before I left NZ. L&P is not available outside NZ. I have not tasted it for 20+ years!!

NZ is far and away the best choice of places to live for the landscape, but mostly because of the people. Sane, reasonable, responsible is how most of them conduct themselves. If you visit, you'll want to live there.
So it is ironic that so many promote immigration as it is only beneficial, when there are pros and cons. You will find the happiest countries are those with the least amount of immigrants. Stated by an immigrant to America, who understands the benefits of immigration but has experienced the problems of uncontrolled immigration and illegal immigration. When you fill a house with many that don't love the house, it is detrimental.
Hi! Thank you for informing about NZ. Where did you get the information that Germans can apply for work & travel visa until 35? As far as we (Germans) know it is possible until 30.
For airline tickets: yes, browse in private mode, but ALSO clear your cookies before you buy!! I was browsing in private mode and the prices still kept going up. Cleared my cookies and the price suddenly dropped $100USD. They aren't supposed to track you in private mode, but they still do.
Don't forget Wellington is known as " windy wellington " so if you're flight is coming into wellington don't be surprised if you come into land sideways- - - seriously!
meat and fish pies have been around in the UK since before America was discovered. Marmite comes from UK many things in New Zealand and Australia are from the UK due to colonisation.. When I lived in the US, I was often asked if I was Australian which is in comprehensible as the difference between the two is almost the same as UK and US New Zealanders accent is closer to UK than Australia accept for the way Kiwi's pronounce the letter "e", they always pronounce it as "ee" eg wheere neext . Very strange.
Umm as is often the case, there could be some debate about the origins of beetroot in a burger, it is definitely also a Australian thing. The Aussie Macca’s sell the exact same burger but call it the Aussie Burger 😂
The All Blacks haven't been the best Rugby team in the world for quite a while now. My country, Ireland, are currently ranked number 1 in the world and recently won a test series in New Zealand.
There are tips that you didn't mentioned being - a. credit card surcharges apply at the hotels and selected restaurants. From the 1 Nov 22, the government has passed the law that processing banks have to reduce business merchant and contactless 'tap & pay' transaction fees, so credit card surcharges should disappear. b. Besides us a a credit card, a person can use Mastercard or Visa debit cards and Mastercard/Visa multiple currency travel cards. c. Contactless 'tap & pay' payment use is widely used through out the country. c. The country does have a national 'book and travel' regional, inter-regional and long distance coach network covering both the South and North Islands, regular inter-island ferry services between the North and South Island and between the South Island and Stewart Island. You didn't mentioned the the 3 long distance 'scenic' passenger trains services between Auckland and Wellington, Christchurch and Picton that connects with inter-island ferry service between the North and South Islands and Christchurch and Greymouth located on the west coast of the South Island. d. You neglected to say that Auckland and Wellington regions have good integrated rail, bus and ferry services within their respective regions. e. Your didn't mentioned the alpine desert region of the MacKenize Basin in the South Island.. The 'desert' on the volcanic plateau located in the central North Island is actually an alpine desert due to its elevation. Also you didn't mentioned the alpine rain forests along the southern part of the South Island's west coast. f. You seem to want to promote dirty tourism travel despite the government moving towards 50% reduction in carbon and other gas emissions by 2035, hence promoting sustainable, environmentally friendly 'green' tourism.
Tip # 1 : New Zealand has roads with lots of corners and windies locals are used to them - if you are going under speed limit and there is more than one car behind you pull over and let them pass . Dont cause road rage you can cause accidents ! #2 Always cheak your reaview mirrow constantly! #3Pull over if you want to take in the view. #4 If a car is following closely behind you it 90% of the time means they want to be traveling at a faster speed than you - pull over. #5 if you are the leader of a row of 10 cars going 70ks in a 100 k zone ,you are being a dick Pull over!!.

I'm also surprised you were able to cram so many things into a half an hour, including a short tid bit on my hometown Gisborne
Btw, the Tip Top brand which makes the Hokey Pokey flavor..
I really need to get out more.. 🤦♂️
Very helpful ❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it Jane! Make sure you grab one of my NZ Travel itineraries too. So much more great information and tips in it.

Take nothing but photos, leave nothing but footprints.
Great video.
Exactly!
Seasons in Auckland; cold and hot at the same time, hot and cold at the same time, incessantly wet and hot, incessantly wet and cold (worst two weeks of the year). Wear a t-shirt, have a jacket handy.
Haha always have all options available.
Hello Alex! Any recs for good drone spots that are legal of course?
Your travel tips are practical and relatable! By the way, I recently stumbled upon the new V4 of the Bento Bag from Nomad Lane, and it looks like a fantastic travel companion. Have you had a chance to explore it yet? I think it could be a perfect match for your travel tips audience.
Thanks for sharing!!
Vegemite for sure...lol..i'm a kiwi living in Hong Kong and if people ask me where i'm from i say NZ and they say oh your from Europe...lolo....great vlog .
Kia ora and happy new year, I don't do my shopping at nz supermarkets, thankfully costco is in Auckland so do alot of my shopping there,i also shop at markets for fish , veg and meat, live life love aotearoa ☺
I wish there was more Costcos here.
@@AlexanderAyling agree, we need the competition, costco is already planning to open in Wellington, Christchurch and a second Auckland store.. 😉
Great video, just a heads up, a number of things like Hockey Pockey ice cream exist in Australia. So almost just NZ, but almost always AUS and NZ for most things commercially sold, driving rules, slang like togs etc. FYI marmite is from the UK.
Had to educate a local here in Perth about where Hokey Pokey Ice Cream originated.

Hi, Alexander! Just wondering, roughly how much did you purchase your homestead for?
Thanks

Excellent video. But no mention of restricted items arriving by plane. Is it true that camping equipment can be confiscated ??? Thankyou.
It can but only if it is carrying mud or dirt. Just make sure to throughly scrub your boots and hiking gear with soap and water before you fly
Great job
Thank you!
Can u guide if it is a good idea to book and travel in Caravan. How convenient it is
WOW
Glad you enjoyed!
What do u mean by private mode when searching airfares
I'd like to know also
The working holiday Visa in New Zealand is a ESTA.
Hi! Thank you for informing about NZ. Where did you get the information that Germans can apply for work & travel visa until 35? As far as we (Germans) know it is possible until 30.
Hello Marie, head over to the Immigration NZ website. They have all the info easily available. Cheers
For airline tickets: yes, browse in private mode, but ALSO clear your cookies before you buy!! I was browsing in private mode and the prices still kept going up. Cleared my cookies and the price suddenly dropped $100USD. They aren't supposed to track you in private mode, but they still do.
So I wouldn't need a visa just a passport correct?
Don't forget Wellington is known as " windy wellington " so if you're flight is coming into wellington don't be surprised if you come into land sideways- - - seriously!
Any recommendations about how much NZ cash to arrive with? Better to get NZ money in US or exchange there?🙏
I'd just use my bank card and get money from the ATM, then use credit card where possible.
It’s a shame you didn’t mention Whitebait Patties … A local delicacy to die for…..!!😎
Those are tasty!
Also, New Zealand DOESN'T use Cheques anymore if you think you might write a cheque to cover/buy things.
a fantastic tour guide and could you please make a vlog about the Lord of Rings filming locations in the future🤤🤤
I'll add it to the list!
Don't you need an nzeta to travel to new Zealand though? instead of a visa.
meat and fish pies have been around in the UK since before America was discovered.

Hi! Can I bring in sealed baby foods/medication?
Yes, just make sure the medications are in their labeled container.
The All Blacks haven't been the best Rugby team in the world for quite a while now. My country, Ireland, are currently ranked number 1 in the world and recently won a test series in New Zealand.
All that matters is the World Cup ;)

Top 3 foods in New Zealand?
Lamb, Lamb, Lamb lol
There are tips that you didn't mentioned being -
a. credit card surcharges apply at the hotels and selected restaurants.
Hey Chris - thank you for sharing your tips. I most certainly don’t want to promote “dirty” tourism by any means…
Think it was a great overview of NZ..
sorry to say that marmite is not a nz spread its from the uk produced in nz, prefer vegemite my self has a less acrid taste
I’m from Chile 🇨🇱.
Need a Visa ??
Chile is on the list of Visa waiver countries for NZ, you don't need one if you are staying less than 3 months
Why give up your passwords? NZers don't think this is a violation of privacy rights? Confused, trying to comprehend.
Lovely
May God bless Peetu in Auckland
You never seem to mention there are NO GUNS here.
ozzie burger again stolen by the kiwis
LOL
Yeah sandflies suck. They really suck.
Wow! Great video/recommendations! Very informative and not boring :). Started following you on Insta. Do you by any chance have any recommendations of touring agencies where singles can come join others for different bucket lists? Also, do you happen to know about beach volleyball communities there? Which beaches have nets and games with locals? :) Starting to do my research to head there towards end of year. Thanks again for the excellent video! And thanks everyone for the helpful comments as well.
Hey Roberta, I haven’t seen beach volleyball but I’m sure in Auckland there would be people playing. You may consider a group tour (you can book activities through the links in my description)
I’d suggest watching this video for a better idea of where to travel in the country.
