Hey Phoebe, thank you for sharing my homeland to the globe. I loved how you incorporated Maori history. My daughter and I are planning to explore this part of Aotearoa. Can you please advise, your road trip from Christchurch to Akaroa, was there a lot of gravel roads? Just wondering if we would need to hire a 4wd?
Amazing video.. loved all the information shared. Thanks heaps. My daughter and self will be visiting Lake Tekapo this june n will do sky gazing on the no moon day.. wondering if you could guide us how to go to these places using local transport. The sad part is we don't drive.
Hi Leena! Getting around South Island in particular without a car is possible, but tricky, and you have to accept that some places will be out of your reach. There is basically one public bus company in South Island (InterCity, who also operate in the North), and their buses are good, but not very regular. You may find there is only one bus a day between the places you want to travel from/to, and there might not be one on the day you want it. Delays are also not uncommon, and there can be long gaps between toilet breaks. We recently took the bus from Queenstown to Christchurch, and that route stops at Tekapo for a lunch break. We just managed to see the Church of the Good Shepherd up close for a couple of minutes after all! There are some hop on-hop off tour buses you can sign up for, but unless you will be driving yourself or traveling as part of a tour, be prepared to have your plans dictated by the bus schedules. New Zealand is an absolutely incredible country that everyone should visit, but it is miles behind European standards for public transport. The Interisland ferries are a total mess right now - we were lucky just to be shunted onto the crack-of-dawn ferry on the day we were supposed to travel from North to South Island, but we’re glad that happened as the sunrise was amazing! This is a trip that requires careful planning, plus cash to spare in case you need to switch to expensive private shuttle services if public transport lets you down. Enjoy!
@@ThereIsOnlyOneStuart thank you sooo much for your detailed reply. So true about the public service not being too reliable.. fingers crossed we hope to be able to chalk out our itinerary keeping all these factors in mind

I've only ever visited in winter and love it :) I recommend looking up the NZ school holiday dates for the year you want to visit and timing your trip around those. Prices go up during NZ school holidays and there are a LOT more people around. Usually, I try to time my trip for June/July, before NZ school holidays start but after the ski fields are likely to open up.
Hi, may I ask when you staying in Highland Farm Stay, any restaurant or cafe around for meal ? or better buy something from market before head to the accommodation ?
I’m not sure sorry, love 🙏🏼 there was no reason given on the sign. I’m sure if you google it there will be a website somewhere the tells you if it’s open or not. I just didn’t think to check before I visited. So silly!
So Amazing , beautiful, Insane scenery, really useful information you shared thanks for the information of this amazing hike , can u please shared me the app which u r talking about in ur video
I would recommend checking the school holiday dates for New Zealand and planning your visit before or after school holidays. Prices go up and it’s much busier. We usually time our visit around when the ski fields open and before school holidays - it usually ends up being in June 🙌🏻
Hello Little Banana hehe so cute! That's hard to answer, to be honest. We stayed in a lot of different accommodation types, some days we wouldn't eat out at all and only eat from supermarkets, some days we'd have no paid activities and other days we'd have a few paid activities. I wrote a blog post from our last motorhome trip to New Zealand where I detailed our costs, that might be useful for you. You can read that on our website here: littlegreybox.net/2019/07/10/this-is-how-much-a-new-zealand-motorhome-road-trip-actually-costs/
It would be nice if you took the time to be kind to people who are trying their very best to share, celebrate, learn about and enjoy another culture and language. Expecting someone who doesn’t speak another language to figure out how to speak it perfectly is ridiculous. I spoke to the loveliest Maori local in Christchurch and told him how, when I try to use the local language in any country we visit in the world, someone will inevitably comment on the video and criticise me for not speaking the language perfectly and how hard it is to find the confidence to even try when we go somewhere new and there’s a different language I want to incorporate. That lovely man told me he was so happy I was using Māori in my videos and getting the pronunciation perfect wasn’t important. What was important to him was the respect and love for his culture and any other good human would feel the same way. So don’t be so critical. Keep in mind people are trying their best and be aware you’re just one of thousands of people criticising me for not speaking another language perfectly.
Aoraki - 1894 wasn't actually the first recorded attempt. Waitaha people (indigenous people of the land) who actually were here a 1000years prior use to climb the maunga and live in the puke. FYI a great platform to use for Māori place names is Māori dictionary - gives you an accurate explanation of the word and you can play the sound so you know how to pronounce it. Said with love but you're butchering our language.
I really appreciate the insight into Aoraki and the tip on Māori dictionary! The last comment was unnecessary and hurtful. I’ve tried really hard in each video to include Māori culture and use the language. It’s not a language I’ve been taught or spoken before and I tried my best. I did a tour with a Māori gentleman in Christchurch and confided in him that I often get critical comments from people when I try to speak another language in our videos and find it hard to attempt to try to speak another language in our videos when it draws negativity and criticism. He was so kind and supportive and shared that even if it wasn’t perfect, he appreciated the effort and took the time to let me listen to him talk and learn from him. I share this with you to tell you I’m a real person who’s trying their best. You’re not the only person who’s critical of me on UA-cam and I really would’ve appreciated the tip on Māori dictionary as a way for me to learn and grow without the hurtful comment about butchering your language.
@@travelforphoebe Don't worry about the negative comments on butchering their language. Don't worry about it please. They are always moaning as a way of getting the own Maori agenda across, so sorry you were hurt. As a New Zealander I get that all the time here. Sick of it!
