Poop! So glad I thought to buy pads. He was on our bed so we could monitor. Sometimes I just stayed awake with tissues and caught it as it was coming out while he was sleeping. Finally found out it was over-sedation post surgery and he needed some probiotics. Days later more pain meds and less sedation really solved the problem. But the POOP! And all the wiping of his poor bottom made him raw. I didn’t know until it happened. I now have your book! No matter where people are in the process while reading this comment this book is incredibly helpful! We are 6 weeks post TPLO surgery after one year of conventional care. (Our fella is simply too high energy to keep still. Finally had to face the surgery.) He’s doing well. I continue to refer to your book and find gems that are incredibly helpful for where we’re at. Thank you so much. To those reading the comments, this woman has been through EVERY step of this process. Save yourself a whole lot of stress and get her book. It’s wise, open-minded and user friendly. 🙏
Elissa! Thanks for your kind words and support. I appreciate it so much. I’m thrilled your boy is doing well. The post-op poop thing is so common and I was surprised when my vet friend said he’d never heard of it. Have you tried a diaper ointment on your dog’s bottom to soothe it? I’d look for something without scent, and always check with your vet before applying anything anywhere. I now teach about each step of prep and recovery with online trainings. It’s like having me as your personal recovery coach. Would you like to beta test it? I’d be happy to gift it to you in exchange for your feedback. You’ll get instant access to all of the free bonuses too. You can check it out at RunAgainRover.com. Click on the “Learn Online” tab. 😊🐕
Thank you Carla. That is a wonderful offer! Re poop aftercare…oh, if only I’d known. I just thought whatever I put on he’ll lick off, but for goodness sake, he had his cone on all that time. 🙄 Poor little guy. I’m going to pass that tip on to my vet. 🙏
We are 2 days post op and I had no idea. It has happened twice now while she was sleeping. Tons of wipes and laundry. Ugh I wish I found this out sooner
Yep, there’s a LOT of extra laundry! Just a mention in case you didn’t know - check the ingredients list for the wipes because some brands contain xylitol, which is extremely toxic to dogs. Of course, if your dog is wearing a recovery collar they shouldn’t be able to lick where you wiped, but I just wanted to give you a heads-up. Best wishes for a smooth recovery. 💕🐕🙌
@@katelinb9224 it seems to happen to so many dogs. I’m always surprised when vets say they haven’t dealt with it. Good for you for choosing THR over FHO. I have a vet friend who does THRs and his patients do SO much better with a normally functioning hip joint. Best wishes to your dog for a smooth and successful recovery!
Please give more info..my young dog is 72 hrs out of surgery and has complete bowel incontinence. Zero issues before surgery. Please tell me it will resolve? How long? Im very concerned
@@memyselfandi5163 I’m so sorry this is happening! I’m not a vet, so unfortunately I don’t have clinical expertise. Your veterinary team will surely have an answer. Please reach out to them ASAP. Please also request to join two Facebook groups: TPLO Recovery Success & Support and Canine Cruciate Recovery. I own one group and admin the other. Go to the magnifying glass icon in the group and search the phrase “poop leaking” and you’ll see lots of posts. I do know this happened to some dogs in the group up to three days post-op. That said, it’s still important to keep your veterinarian in the loop, so please call them. You could ask if firming up your dog’s stool with a little canned pumpkin would work, but even then you might have to just wait for this to resolve over time. Be sure to ask how much 100% canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) to give based on your dog’s size. Hang in there, this first week is tough, but you’ll get through it. You can also check out my online mini-course that lists everything you’ll encounter during recovery. Visit www.RunAgainRover.com and look for CCL Recovery Cheat Sheets.
This totally happened to my Siberian Husky. I smelled poop and saw a small amount came out. What I didn’t see until a few days later was that some had actually dried around his anus. Because of the meds, his tail was always down. I felt soooo bad. So I cleaned him up with a soft cloth and diluted dog shampoo and had to very carefully cut some of his fur around his anus. The vet said to apply Aquaphor to loosen up the rest that was dried on there. Worked like a charm!
Good for you that you checked though! And you can bet that your comment will make others check. That how dog owners help other dog owners! I love it. Aquaphor - makes sense why it worked, and maybe that’s actually better than diaper rash cream? Either way, I’m sure your boy felt a lot better after you cleaned him up. I hope he’s healing like a champ! 🥰
Did this have a poop leakage issue? How long did it last? Do you have any recommendations about this topic that could help others? Comment below :)

@@elissasmith1566 I think the majority of dog owners don’t expect it. 😳💩
I want to beta test it. I'm a senior learning and org development consultant for a large health care organization (for people)@@RunAgainRover

I should have watched this one before bringing Maggie home. Would have saved on some laundry! 😊
There’s a lot of extra laundry those first couple weeks of recovery!
