      @@memyselfandi5163 I’m so sorry this is happening! I’m not a vet, so unfortunately I don’t have clinical expertise. Your veterinary team will surely have an answer. Please reach out to them ASAP. Please also request to join two Facebook groups: TPLO Recovery Success & Support and Canine Cruciate Recovery. I own one group and admin the other. Go to the magnifying glass icon in the group and search the phrase “poop leaking” and you’ll see lots of posts. I do know this happened to some dogs in the group up to three days post-op. That said, it’s still important to keep your veterinarian in the loop, so please call them. You could ask if firming up your dog’s stool with a little canned pumpkin would work, but even then you might have to just wait for this to resolve over time. Be sure to ask how much 100% canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) to give based on your dog’s size. Hang in there, this first week is tough, but you’ll get through it. You can also check out my online mini-course that lists everything you’ll encounter during recovery. Visit www.RunAgainRover.com and look for CCL Recovery Cheat Sheets.

    Do seroma’s feel slightly warm to the touch? Thank you for the helpful info!

    • @RunAgainRover
      @RunAgainRover 11 днів тому

      @@PuzS I’m not a vet, but if I thought my dog developed a seroma, I’d take a pic or video and send it to my vet. If the supposed seroma felt warm to the touch it would make me want to consult with my vet to be sure everything is okay. You want to be sure what you’re seeing isn’t an infection. Until you speak to your vet, do your best to keep your pet moving slowly - no pulling, running, jumping or lunging. Sometimes after surgery these activities can cause seromas.

    Our puppy got spayed Tuesday and all has been great until I noticed today (day 5) that her surgical vest had a mark like it had been wet. And it is her incision area. Some watery with blood like pink color coming out and she does have a little bump close to incision so I am thinking the same. But she keeps having bit lf this pinkish watery stuff coming out little by little. So I worry. Area looks very good otherwise. Do we put triple antibiotic to that area or try the hot/ cold compress or just leave alone?? 🙏🏻

    • @RunAgainRover
      @RunAgainRover Місяць тому

      I'm not a vet, so I don't know whether applying triple antibiotic cream is right or not. The same is true for ice vs heat - only your vet should advise on that. You can check if there's mention of ice or heat in the surgical discharge paperwork they gave you when you picked her up from the clinic after surgery. Your vet will be happy to answer your questions. They always want to know how their patients are doing, so put in a quick call. :) Next, the fluid that sometimes seeps from wounds is called "serosanguineous" which is a mix of serum and tinges of blood. Again, that will be an easy one for your vet to answer. If you get some clear pics of the bump near the incision and the drainage and show those to her doctor that would be helpful to them. They'll advise you whether to bring her in for a recheck or to do some watchful waiting. A seroma isn't like a small pustule/pimple/zit. Just send a pic to your vet and they'll tell you what's going on. Best wishes as she continues to heal.

    Thanks for the video. My dog has a likely partial CCL tear and while my vet recommended TPLO surgery I have an appointment with My Pet’s Brace that I’m thinking about postponing, as after 6 weeks post-injury my dog’s knee seems to be stabilizing. Her muscles are strong and she pulls well and wants to jump and play, though I vigilantly keep her leash walked minimally. She only limps a little when she gets up for the first few steps but otherwise she seems fine, and I’m thinking perhaps to just let her heal naturally instead of adding a brace I may never use or could do more damage than good if it’s putting pressure on the muscles and restricting movement.

    • @RunAgainRover
      @RunAgainRover 2 місяці тому

      Hi Jonathan. It’s definitely a tough call. One thing to be aware of is sometimes after periods of rest, we think the dog is healed. And then we give them a little freedom and the limping starts again. Scar tissue is pretty wimpy. It takes a long time and rest to form it can break down very fast. it’s just something to keep in mind. Trust your vet’s advice. They have the most experience with these injuries.

    • @Jonathan-mt9up
      @Jonathan-mt9up 2 місяці тому

      @@RunAgainRover I totally understand that and plan to restrict her activity with short on-leash walks only for many months to come. Sadly, my vet seems like a surgery profiteer (he didn't do any x-rays or MRI either, just a cranial drawer test that had only minimal play) and I'll be taking his advice with that in consideration. I'd hoped to hear back from a dog physical therapist, as they seem to be the ones that recommend not getting a brace, at least in some of the many posts I've seen in conservative management Facebook groups.

    • @RunAgainRover
      @RunAgainRover 3 місяці тому

      Hi Rachel, I tried one from My Pet’s Brace. It’s not that the brace is bad in any way. It just didn’t work for my dog. If you’re considering a brace, IMO the ones made from a fiberglass cast are the best. That’s because creating a brace from an impression of your dog’s leg ensures a perfect fit. With measurements there’s margin for error. A glove-like fit is important because as dogs move and muscles contract and relax, the brace can shift. This repetitive micro movement can cause skin ulcerations that may progress to infections. Brands that make braces from fiberglass casts are OrthoPets, Hero Braces, and My Pet’s Brace. And if I had my choice, I’d want a veterinarian or someone who knows dog anatomy at the brace company to do the casting. 🙌👨‍⚕️🐶

      So sorry to read that your dog is having some issues after surgery. Though I wish I could provide you some assurance, I’m not a veterinarian. My best advice is to get a clear pic and video and send them to your veterinary team. DM me and I’ll send you some pics of various bumps near incisions. I shot this video before I had pics. What you’re describing doesn’t sound like a seroma. If your dog had surgery and especially if they’re limping, either a new onset or a worsening limp, I recommend taking a pic and sending it to your veterinary team. You’ll want to be sure what you’re seeing isn’t a pustule because that can mean there’s an infection. Your vet will help you with next steps.

    We are a month into this journey with one of our Siberian Huskies. After the drawer test, the vet believes it is probably only a partial tear on both legs; our 7 y.o. girl is absolutely willing to put weight on both of them. We've been pretty diligent with CM for the last month, and the Gabapentin has helped. She is also on Rimadyl, which I am hoping to replace with CBDs as soon as possible (they cannot be taken together). She was 64 lb. (ideal is 52-55) but with a low-calorie diet she's losing between .5 - 1lb a week, and we'll get her down there as soon as we safely can. We got the custom bilateral Animal Ortho Care knee braces, which we've had for 6 days now. We're seeing a vet certified in rehabilitation and will start the water treadmill and cold laser next week. I understand that TPLO is the golden standard, but I would like to try a non-surgical approach first - the vet confirms that surgery is not urgent at this time. I found a NIH article earlier today about success with Stem Cells and Platelet-Rich Plasma which I am going to research as well. Huskies are active dogs, and prior to her injury we were logging around 40 miles a week, so I have a sinking feeling that we'll end up on an operating table, but hope springs eternal. Hi there, and good for you for doing your research and not rushing into things. CCL surgery is elective so you have time to try rest and medical management (conservative management). It gives you time to look for an experienced surgeon and ask the best and most important questions if you decide to do surgery at some point. I’ve never seen anyone in my Facebook group try PRP with lasting benefits, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth trying if you want to. Best wishes with your dog!

      Hi there! Because I’m not a veterinarian, I can’t say whether all bumps are normal or not. The best and safest way to care for your pet is to contact your veterinarian and ask if you can send them a picture of the bump, or if they recommend scheduling a visit to bring your dog in for a checkup.

      Yep, there’s a LOT of extra laundry! Just a mention in case you didn’t know - check the ingredients list for the wipes because some brands contain xylitol, which is extremely toxic to dogs. Of course, if your dog is wearing a recovery collar they shouldn’t be able to lick where you wiped, but I just wanted to give you a heads-up. Best wishes for a smooth recovery. 💕🐕🙌

      Thank you so much for the wonderful compliment. It means so much to me. I’m sorry your dog’s fibula broke. Sometimes that happens when a screw goes through the fibular head or when the veterinarian over rotates the part of the tibia that’s surgically referred to as the proximal segment. From what vets have taught me, fibula fractures heal pretty well over time and don’t require further treatment. Do your best to keep your pup moving slowly inside and outdoors too. Even something like pulling while leashed should be avoided. With four surgeries, I imagine you’ve become a recovery pro, so best wishes to you and your dog for smooth and successful healing. 💕🐕

      I think they lie on the surgery side so they can use the strong leg to push themselves up to a standing position. It shouldn’t do any damage to the post-op leg to lie on it, but if you’re concerned it would be smart to put in a quick call to your veterinary team. Best wishes with your dog’s recovery and healing. ☺️

    Can't afford $1500 for surgery. These braces are $1000...

    • @RunAgainRover
      @RunAgainRover 6 місяців тому

      These surgeries are expensive and so is a quality brace. Surgery, if performed by an experienced vet generally has better outcomes than braces do, but not all people can or want to go the surgical route. It’s a tough call for sure, and I’ll assume your $1,500 quote was for a lateral suture type of repair. The bone cutting procedures cost thousands more. There are organizations that offer grants to help pay veterinary bills. A Google search will give a solid list of groups to call.

    Hi, thank you for this information. I just watched your other video saying that a well fit brace can work. I'm confused, so do you think braces work or not?

    • @RunAgainRover
      @RunAgainRover 6 місяців тому

      Hi there. Sorry for the confusion! I think stifle braces for CCL tears in dogs may be worth a try if the owner can be patient and diligent for 9-12 months, which is how long a brace can take to work, if it does at all. Data suggests that smaller dogs have better luck with braces, so that might be a reason I'd try one. Because I don't know your reason for considering a brace, I'll describe some reasons that a brace could be a great alternative to surgery. CCL surgery is elective and doesn't need to be rushed into. A pet parent might need some time to figure things out, especially if they have scheduling issues that might interfere with surgery or post-op caregiving, or if they're unsure about surgery or don't have the funds to pay for it. Some dogs have underlying medical conditions that make surgery risky, so a brace can help for that population. Some dogs have diseases of bone where surgery is risky or isn't an option, so a brace can be suitable for them too. But if I had a chance for a do-over with my 70+ pound muscular and active dog with a CCL tear, would I have chosen a stifle brace? I probably wouldn't. I'd put the money toward surgery and take the time to find a reputable, experienced veterinarian who has low complication rates, a well-trained and ample team of veterinary technicians, who insists on the highest quality implant systems, who uses planning software for every CCL surgery case and who's skilled at being able to make what he or she planned with the software come true in the OR.

  • @luzdivina2706
    @luzdivina2706 6 місяців тому

    Hi, thank you for this information. I just watched your other video saying that you spent money on a brace and it didn't work. I'm confused, so do you think braces work?

    • @RunAgainRover
      @RunAgainRover 6 місяців тому

      I understand why you’re confused. Sorry about that! Dogs wear knee braces for reasons other than CCL tears, but the majority of people looking at them are doing so because of a torn CCL. Is that what’s going on with your dog? Based on my experience with a big dog (70+ lbs), I don’t think stifle braces are an optimal solution for stabilizing the knee joint in dogs with CCL tears. There’s not a lot of data on the subject, unfortunately. Some vets say the small breeds with CCL tears might be better candidates for improvement with stifle braces. If I had a small breed, then yes, I might be inclined to try a brace. This would especially be the case if my dog was older or if CCL surgery was risky because of an underlying medical condition. Or if finding the money for surgery isn’t possible, then that could be another reason to consider a brace. Then there are the various styles of braces - neoprene ones which inadequately control the backward slippage of the femur on the tibia. It doesn’t matter if these material-type braces are $30 or $300. On a big dog especially, it’s my non-vet opinion that they don’t work. I’ve seen a video where a veterinarian performs what’s known as the Cranial Drawer (also sometimes referred to as a random Draw) test on a dog wearing one of these neoprene braces, and the femur slid backward as though the dog wasn’t wearing a brace at all. Custom fitted braces are an option, and there’s a recent study showing that improperly fitting braces can cause skin ulceration and infection may occur. That’s why a perfect fit is key and why the custom braces made from a fiberglass cast if the dog’s leg are the best. Orthopets and My Pet’s Brace sell these braces. I think trying non-surgical options can be beneficial for slowing down dog owners and giving them time to find an experienced surgeon to talk to. When people rush into elective CCL surgery, it can be problematic. Phew! That was a long answer. If I had another large breed dog with a CCL tear, which would I choose - surgery or a custom fitted brace? I’d go with surgery. I can confidently say that because I know what questions to ask the surgeon, I have a trusted veterinary surgeon, and I know what goes into a smooth recovery. One week after the surgery our dog just walked up 10 stairs alone because I couldn't supervise him for 30 seconds. You think that could be a problem? I hope he didn't hurt himself.

    • @RunAgainRover
      @RunAgainRover 7 місяців тому

      Watching over post-op dogs can feel like a full-time job. In seconds of not being observed they take advantage of the situation and do all kinds of things they shouldn’t. I can’t say for sure if your dog’s leg is okay after doing stairs. Hopefully he didn’t run because that’s a lot of force on an unhealed bone cut and TPLO implant system. When these things happen it’s an opportunity to learn and figure out ways so it doesn’t happen again. For you, it might be as simple as getting a baby gate or offering a non-rolling toy or a frozen Kong treat when you need to step away. Just keep an eye on his walking and look for differences compared to before he did the steps. If he seems worse, put in a quick call to your veterinary team. It can be tricky to tell whether our dogs are walking better or not, especially early on. That’s why I recommend getting video at least every week. The ideal situation is to have one person walk the dog and another getting video from the surgery side and also from behind the dog. Slow motion video is amazing to pick up the subtle movements we might miss at regular speed. So hang in there! Take a deep breath and know that you’ve got this. 💜🐕 If you want to know all of the steps that go into a smooth recovery, I created a printable resource called CCL Recovery Cheat Sheets. My dog had a very involved surgery (a right front leg amputation from a soft tissue sarcoma) he has developed A post-surgical seroma which was draining through his incision... In his case it really looks like a boob😂 Some of the drainage was like a faucet of water once it really built up pressure, his body is also absorbing some of it I do the warm compresses... he is 2 weeks post surgery so it's definitely getting better. I'm a healthcare provider so I knew to check for color odor etc but it definitely can be unnerving especially if it's not your wheelhouse ❤

    • @RunAgainRover
      @RunAgainRover 7 місяців тому

      I think we’ve got to just go with what our dogs do. I imagine the post-op leg will be sore after lying on it all night. Maybe they stayed in that position because they felt better that way, because they could use the un-operated side to help them reposition a bit, or maybe because the meds sedated them and they stayed in one position. No matter which reason, I can’t think of a reason why lying on the post-op leg all night would be problematic. This would be best answered by your vet, but my guess is that they won’t be concerned by it. Best wishes for a smooth and successful recovery. And thanks for your kind words. Thank you! We waited too long. It was that severely hunched up back and limping after the ONE time he chased a squirrel and was off leash. I still feel badly about it. We had a good chance at CM, but with a highly energized dog, upon reflection, he was not a good candidate for CM. We did our best for a full year, but as I look back--he's in week 11 after TPLO surgery--he's doing great! He's mending so well because we did everything he needed in those first 8 weeks especially. It's worth the time and care. Now I wish we'd done this a year ago. Surgery is scary, but by doing all the post-surgery care (I discovered the surgeon and our vet were very supportive when we had questions so we weren't in the dark as he went through the recovery period), taking the time, giving him rest, etc, he has mended quickly. And, fingers crossed, his opposite leg will be ok. This is so important. People need support and good, honest advice from someone who has been through it. Thank you very much!

      Hi Elissa. Thank you for your thoughtful comment. Experiences like yours are especially helpful for people who are in those early stages. Maybe they’re feeling exactly like we did - fearful of surgery. Hindsight makes some look back with guilt or remorse for not moving forward, but try to usher those feelings out of your mind because they do no good. You followed a logical, hopeful course of action before your dog’s surgery. You didn’t rush, and I think that’s important. Some people who rushed into surgery are regretful for lots of reasons. Hang in there, and keep up the great work with your dog’s recovery. 🐕💜
