Murphy's TPLO Story

  • Murphy is a 10-year-old German short-haired pointer lab mix that we got from the SPCA when he was six weeks old, and he's been an integral part of our family ever since.
The day Murphy injured himself was just like any other day when he was hunting around the property and enjoying being outside. A small deer came through the property, and he chased the deer down. They both fell at the same time and as Murphy stood back up he was limping immediately, so we knew something was wrong.
For two months we leash walked him and kept him in a confined space, hoping that he would be able to recover on his own. He would rest it for a couple days but then he would try to chase a squirrel, and then he would really limp for a couple days again. So we realized we had to do something. So we went to get a second opinion.
The surgeon said there was no way Murphy could recover 100 % without the TPLO surgery. I'd say he was back to 75--80 % within eight weeks of the surgery. We really anticipated a much longer, tougher recovery, but Murphy really recovered quickly.
We would absolutely recommend having the surgery to anybody who is thinking about it. Murphy would not be back to the level of activity that he is today without having had the surgery. Today he's able to run with the kids, catch a Frisbee, and he's really back to himself again.

My 7 year old Chihuahua tore her ACL beginning of February, March 2nd she tore her other one and was basically a paraplegic... March 5th surgery on both knees. That first week was a nightmare.. she looked so much in pain.. slowly got better; end of May she is running. She does not seem to have much discomfort. I’m glad I spent 6500 on her knees. (Who needs a furnace)

Thank you for this video. My Roxy was dropped off this morning for surgery and the surgeon called and said she is done and that Roxy is doing well. This video gives me hope that she will recover and be happy and able to enjoy moving around again without discomfort.

@@moneymaks24 Hi sorry for the late response, she is doing well. Her recovery went great and we waited about 18 weeks before really letting her become active like before. We were even able to hike last month. Thank you so much for your concern, this video helped ease my nerves.

Thanks for the video, my baby girl Violet is going in on 3-25-20! It's going to be a long day and 1 1/2 drive to get to the place and then we have to wait outside because everything elts is basically closed due to the corona -19 virus. I just pray that the staff stays safe and well so we can get this done! she has a completely torn ACL and is in much pain!

TY as well. Our Tish was hit by a car. after being lost for weeks. (My greatest nightmare!) The person left her on the side of the road. Thankfully we had flyers up over a 2-mile radius so the mam who found her called us after putting a blanket over her. On top of the knee, her left leg's hip is dislocated. She's in for surgery today. We are trying to start a Go-Fund page, as the surgery here is a lot more.

How did you create a confined space? Sorry, I also have a large rescued dog and wondering how I will do this unless it's the bedroom but also nervous he could jump on and off bed..

My dog started limping about a month ago not improving appeared to be getting worse took her in for a check up she goes back on the 8th for the xray but my vet thinks it is her knee. We think she injured it out back on the steps or while chasing something, She is on pain killers now. I am wondering the same thing as someone else how much does the surgery cost. ?
