    My dad was raised on this island, so I’ve been there countless times to visit my grandparents. But my dad knows that the island is doomed. He says he’ll be sad when it’s gone, but he won’t shed a tear. He’s moved on from the island.
    I’ll miss it when it’s gone too, but I probably won’t be too sad, truthfully. Sure, it’s beautiful and a nice change of scenery, but I’ve got bad memories there that overpower the good ones.

      Sorry you had a bad time. Maybe it makes you biased? With respect maybe your dad is just being stoic and thinks it's hopeless. Maybe he has bad memories too? look at it like this If it was the islands that the Gullah culture was on or an American Indian thing most people would be be all for it. And I would too. Why not this culture? Hmm. This is relatively an infinitesimal amount of money. It's called cultural preservation. They spend a hundred times more money on total horseshit. As an outside view I can assure you this is a fascinating, beautiful culture that is a historical treasure. I loved it there. I'm sickened by the politics that keeps them from getting the penance that would conserve the place.

      Ok so your from the island so you claim what's your last name? I'm from that island born and raised and I have never heard anyone talk like this about the island and sense it's a island I know everyone there including everybody's last name so if your from there what is it I'll say mine to it's Parks

    We visited there this past August. Everything is so run-down. Only one restaurant still open. The museum was interesting, but nothing else was worthwhile. Really surprised me for an island that relies on tourism so heavily to look the way it did.

    Guy they interviewed: "Global warming is a huge problem because it's causing our island to sink, which will eventually ruin our homes and way of life"
    Same guy: "I like this global warming thing, good for the economy"

    What did Trump do for the island during his presidency? The residents really supported him, I hope he did the same.

      80% of the people voted for him. He phoned the mayor there and said he would help so I'm curious as to what became of that conversation. Obviously the 10 million needed for the sea wall wasnt received maybe some other positive like easing federal regulations for the crabbing industry and state regulations that arent issuing new boating licences preventing the industry from growing

    My home state of Virginia cannot support or protect 500-700 people on a dying island when they don’t even offer a means of tourism dollars. Southwest Va is far mor deserving of support money where there is a realistic chance of transforming a devastated community into one that is prosperous and productive. Even Ocracoke NC , which brings in tons of tourist dollars will one day be like Tangier.

    • @hollyroyer7106
      @hollyroyer7106 2 роки тому +1

      I live in the community where Tangier is and there’s a lot wrong with what you said. You speak of Virginia with pride. Well, the people of Tangier speak the closest to the original settlers that founded Virginia. That’s pretty incredible. I remember when I first visited as a child I felt as though I had arrived in another country. It’s a completely different way of life there, a very pure way of life. Those people have only known that as their home. Generations of family’s have known it as home. There’s a cruise boat here that takes tourists there all the time. My community IS a tourist community. It’s almost gotten too big actually for my taste and the taste of most other locals. It’s just a beautiful area and people come for the peace and humility of it. Tangier is most DEFINITELY worth saving. It’s not just 500-700 people. It’s centuries of history. It’s Virginia pride.

    Come on people, its not the US tax payers responsibility to stop nature so that less than 700 people can live on an island the way their parents lived? Be honest. Aren't most Tangier Island children moving off the island for a different way of life and more opportunity anyway. Have some perspective. People will live on Tangier Island as long as God wants them to, then they won't.

      Of all the misappropriated funds. Your going to worry about this infinitesimal amount of money? They give Way more money to total horseshit. This is actually a beautiful valuable culture. Are you against historical landmarks too? How about preserving battle fields and forts and monuments? They were promised the levy and they didn't get it because they are god fearing conservative white people. I get that you don't like tax money being spent inappropriately. And if every other ''community'' wasn't getting truck loads of money as well as a myriad of other frivolous ways they spend the money I'd probably be with you on it. I checked your channel you seem conservative and you mentioned god. I really think you're not thinking about this one in the proper light. I've been there and this place and these people are really worth it. On top of all the history and culture it's also a real working fishing village. If they got a little encouragement the kids might stop leaving and they probably would see a cultural resurgence like the Cajuns. Think about it man cultural preservation

    I’m sorry but you seriously want taxpayers to spend ridiculous amounts of money to “save” an island for 500 people? Sounds like they need to move on. I get that their family has called it home for a long time but it’s just time to go

      My dad is from the island and he 100% agrees. He does say he’ll feel a little sad when it’s gone but he won’t shed any tears for it. The island’s doomed whether if he cries over it or not. :/

      Not all but many yes. I met a resident when I went a few years ago who hated Trump. Mentions his racism and spoke about the mayor at the time having adopted daughters from India. He was only campaigning when I met the resident. The resident also doesn’t trust any political party either.

      Global sea level has been rising over the past century, and the rate has increased in recent decades. In 2014, global sea level was 2.6 inches above the 1993 average-the highest annual average in the satellite record (1993-present). Sea level continues to rise at a rate of about one-eighth of an inch per year. (Source: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)
