Best destination for the ferry would be Warroad, MN, on the south side of the lake, population about a thousand. Not sure if that's enough of a market to cover the operating costs. But the general store is probably a good idea: just get a bunch of stuff at whatever Canadian version of Walmart is nearest, and sell it locally for double the price.
Alexey Vlasenko yes the store can too be located near the largest population center on in the northwest. For the ferry it would not need to cross Canada and can move at good speed the only down side is the first infrastructure needed. But the cost would pay in fuel savings and country crossing
@Ayylmao that's not how it works at all, and also the video says the bus has to go to "mainland" Minnesota via two border crossings, that's why they gotta get up early for school
Wouldn't it be easier if the Northwest Angle residents got special permission to come to and from the country without having to stop. It's not as if an officer is actively checking vehicles or passengers. If they were smuggling anything it wouldn't change much, seems like a waste of their time really. Give them some diplomatic traveling permissions or something for that stretch. Surely their must be a loophole to cut some of bureaucracy of going to the grocery store.

I live in Italy 40 mins to the border with Switzerland (which is not part of the EU, mind you) and, as strict as Swiss people are known to be, sometimes nobody is at the customs to check who and what's entering or leaving the state, and even if there is somebody he would just ask for your ID, nod at you and let you go most of the time. There are even some people from my place that go to Switzerland every morning to work (as the salaries are way better there, especially considering the value change) and then come back in Italy in the evening to live the rest of the day here. On Saturday there is a market in the city center in my place and it's plenty of Swiss people coming with the train from Switzerland (1 hour ride one way) just to chill here as if they're going to the mall. And even the most remote places across both of the borders have at least a grocery, a school, a pharmacy and a postal office for the few people living in the area so that nobody has to waste hours of their time every week for the basic needs. That situation at "The Angle" is insane.
Unlike Europe, we haven't became that enlightened yet. You people should be proud to have the "Schengen Agreement" that allows that to be the norm. That's why Switzerland doesn't mind at all as long as you remember to leave when you're done! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Area
***** True. My sis did marry a German immigrant herself. Though I don't suppose that would get her EU citizenship if her husband wanted to move back to Germany. They are teaching their son German so he can talk to his grandparents when they come over.
That's all because you are part of the EU. We are not so we don't have the same regulations. Also you have to understand if we built a store, a school, and a pharmacy for ever rural place in America we would be in much more debt. America is large, it is considered normal in rural America to travel long distances for regular activities. You have to remember Switzerland is much smaller then the US.
No, switzerland is not part of the EU. Regarding shops, if they are so many people they could just open their own cooperative shop, which is how many supermarket chains in europe were born anyway.
He actually enjoys his job and in an article on a school transportation site he starts at 4 AM which is a split shift. However, he does work a few hours at a post office to pass the time before his 2nd shift starts.
I'd hate to be those kids. At that age I hated waking up at 5:30 and standing outside for 10 minutes during winter waiting for the bus. Forget spending like 14 hours a day commuting to and from school plus actual school
You’d still have to check in at the border. It’s not like if you were an American, in Canada, trying to go back in you can just go “It’s ok, I’m American” and they just let you in...
Ok, I can understand the school thing and the need to do some things in the U.S. side exclusively. But why the eff can't they go grocery shopping in Canada?!
I think it's because they would be importing goods from Canada, in legal terms, and that would require a huge load of paperwork and taxes to be payed and it would simply be more expensive. I could be wrong, but it's the first thing that comes to my mind
I visited the NWA back in 2009 on a cycling tour, and there's really nothing closer. The NWA is bounded on three sides (North, East and South) by water and thousands of square miles of nothing. To the West, there's Canada, but it's all wilderness. Literally, the nearest shopping is South, but you can't go directly South (due to the aforementioned water); you have to go West, first, skirt the water, and then South to the U.S./Canada border. The Customs agents that you voluntarily contact by satellite phone at Jim's Corner had a bit of trouble with me, because they wanted a vehicle license plate number, which I didn't have (being on a pedal-powered touring tricycle).
TheWinterShadow resident agreements can be made between bordering nations that allow for dual citizenship. At the very least travel trusts can be established to mitigate the hassle of that ridiculous call box that isn’t even manned by customs and border patrol. A US passport is hardly an ID to the world lol. It’s like 6th or 7th on the list in terms of travel freedom.
@@rickyjackson1258 Sure they can, if possible but that's not the nature of this video. It's about the life of the people living there..based on "their" choice...it's about the unique and interesting situation they are living. Seems to me like they love their life and probably wouldn't change a thing. And I am willing to bet they are not calling their life "silly". So, they have to call the Canadian government for permission to cross their border. I think that's pretty cool to show respect to Canada and Canada is pretty cool for letting them. That's all it is respect. There are millions of people who don't call to ask for permission. That's a disgusting fact.
Yeah.. it's crazy. We have some geographical oddities like that in Central Europe, where it's just faster to travel through a neighboring country for a few kilometers. Luckily we have the Schengen agreement, so there's no border control or passport checks. Guess the US should just arrange a similar agreement with Canada, would make life much easier for these and other people along the border.

You don't need a passport if your driving to Canada and live in the states along the border. Those states issue enhanced driver's licenses that you can use. They do cost more than a regular license, at least in Michigan. Had to visit a Secretary of State office with my birth certificate and social security card and was interviewed to verify my identity. This license acts as a form of appropriate ID for border crossings between Canada and Mexico by land. Of course you can still use a passport or the newer passport card.
Roadstar1602 Closest thing is a Passport Card will set you back about $75. For land and water between the U.S., Canada, Mexico and some islands you would stop at on a cruise, they do the job. Won’t work on a plane. I got one specifically to spend some time in Canada. NEXUS would probably be better for frequent travelers. I’m almost considering it.
Yeah, it's amazing that nobody thought of that! Someone could simply get a large truck, buy lots of groceries in mainland Minnesota, and sell them for a big markup back in the Northwest Corner.
***** I saw a UA-cam video on Port Roberts, Washington, and someone there runs a grocery store. The owner has to drive to mainland Washington to buy groceries and bring everything back to Port Roberts. Customs makes it difficult to import from Canada, but apparently they don't have a problem when the food is brought in from the USA. So, it seems that as long as the food is brought in from mainland USA, I imagine it shouldn't be a problem.
While those 60 or so intrepid US citizens are really cool, there's another place where you have to travel through Canada to get to the United States, but it's also a little more involved. It's Point Roberts in Washington state. Established in 1846, Point Roberts is a town of over 1300 residents, situated on a small peninsula south of the 49th parallel, which constitutes the US-Canadian border. They have a small primary school, but every student 4th grade or higher is bussed through Canada, around Boundary Bay (approximately 26 miles) to Blaine, Washington to attend school. They have their own zip code and post office. Currently, Glen Hanlon, retired hockey player and Kekuta Manneh, soccer player for the Vancouver Whitecaps are notable residents of Point Roberts - Manneh (a Gambian who was adopted by an American couple) in order to maintain US residency in order to become a citizen. These two American oddity places are rather interesting.
them crossing the lake just to go to high-school reminds me of when parents tell you that it took three mountains, five rivers, and fighting one tiger just to reach school
My grandparents have been going fishing here at least once a year for the last 30 years. I’ve gone twice with them and it’s a beautiful area. I know that my grandmas spirit rests here as this was her home away from home.
Pretty sure it’s the same procedure as an island off the coast of a state like Georgia. Helicopter pickup and then taken to the mainland for transportation to the nearest hospital.
Sharkboi correct. I have a cabin up there and I’ve seen a medical heli once. I think they would fly them to the “mainland” Minnesota probably warroad than they’d get on a plane and fly to a bigger city to be treated
There likely isnt any issue with going to Canada or back to the US for medical care. While there are parts of the Northern border that are strict, 99% of it is based in goodwill. Neither country is going to deny medical services at a hospital (though an ambulance may not come), and youll never get in trouble for it.
So the lake in in both the US and Canada but you couldn't bring fish across the border? Fish that could swim across that border all day long in the lake. Glad they fixed that stupidity.
I don't get it! So now you can take the fish you catched on that North West Minesota and drive across Canada back down to South Minesota, or you can't?
I live in the rat race of Los Angeles California. There is something strangely appealing about watching this video and imagining myself living a simpler lifestyle.
This isn't the only town like that. There is a town in WA called Point Roberts that is surrounded by Canada that is only accessable by boat or by going through Canada, it doesn't have any land connections with the rest of the US.
I knew a couple who owned a summer resort up there. They'd use boats to get to and from the rest of Minnesota. In the winter, Lake of the Woods becomes a popular snowmobile road for travelers looking to get to and from. Definitely a cool place!
Blame your corrupt liberal democrat run Teachers Union. They would rather teach all your children PC Culture then to teach them actually knowledge about your state etc.
Sounds fun actually. Not trying to sound perverted, but I mean imagine being financially stable enough to just be up there living a simple life and have really nothing to do but lay down and make life with your lady.
Why don't these people just take a boat to the main US? The water between the two areas is still US territory. No passport needed and it's only like 10 miles instead of all that. That whole trip could be shortened if they built a border road around the bottom with a ferry dock.
The water is probably frozen for more of the year than it's thawed, making boat travel difficult or impossible. Plus they'd need to find transportation to the store and back once they got to the other side.
Someone would have to run and charge the appropriate fee for a ferry, it will either be way too expensive for daily use from the family or won't generate enough profit to keep it running.
The fish dispute was settled when the US threatened to stop allowing Canadian trains through in retaliation. The main East-West Canadian railroad line cuts through a corner of the USA. You let us fish, we let your trains use the short cut! Tracks skirt the South edge of the lake, Baudette to Warroad. North of the lake there are just so many little lakes there is no easy East West path for a train. Canadian Campobello island has a bridge to the US but only a ferry to Canada.
Megalus Doomslayer Travelers are legally required to check in with the USBP and CBSA when they go. If caught, they can be denied entry into Canada, which would wreck their livelihood. CBSA rules on who can cross the border are incredibly strict. Do you want secure borders with big gov't or insecure borders with small gov't?
Megalus Doomslayer I don't think you understand. If they do not inform the border patrol agencies on both sides and are caught, they can be deported from Canada and barred from reentry. The reason they check in is so that they can continue to live where they are. If you have a better suggestion of a system here, I am all ears.
S. Singh the closest Canadian town is Steinbach which is over 100 miles. Warroad, MN is the closest town at around 60 miles. Pretty remote around here- plus Canadian prices are crazy expensive 😂
Just make like a co-op, so one person or a family goes once a week and does almost the errands in town. Instead of an array of people doing that. They said it's 60 people? Ish. Yeah, you could set it up. I'm.wondering about logistics. Like day to day life and winter in particular. I like the idea of little to no crime and not being assh*les to elbows with everyone ALL. THE. TIME. Rush, rush, rush. Yuck. I wish Willoughby irl wasn't a crime infested cesspool and more like Twilight Zone. 1960.
I remember they had to air lift in supplies to lift the Canadian blockade of The Angles, it didn't work too well at the time because all the supplies were airlifted on passenger pigeons.
lindsey0806 I grew up not as remote as this but 45 min from the nearest town with a real grocery store and half an hour from my school so when I rode the bus id get on at 6am and get off at 7:50 on a good day with out snow
I kind of wish there is border buffer zones between US and Canada for towns and villages within a certain distance from the border. Buffer zone residents can be issued special ID cards or driver licenses that allows them to travel within the buffer zone without a passport or reporting to border checks. There are established buffer zones with residents along the China-Myanmar border, with villages even buildings split straight by the border. Neither Chinese or Myanmar’s border guards or custom officials will bother people with the correct border buffer zone resident ID, even though that border is the one of the heaviest guarded one in the world.
That town is more gross than anything. Canada needs to put a wall up to keep those weird Americans, with their pretend school and lack of medicine, out.
Actually, leaving the USA to Canada is not the problem. The problem comes if you are pulled over in Canada for something unrelated, or when entering the USA and encounter border patrols who have no record of you leaving the USA. Also, some difficulties may arise when crossing over the waters at times. If you're legal, have a passport and such though, it used to be that normally just causes a bit of inconvenience and delay. Today however it's hard to tell what new state/federal laws pop in and out of existence almost daily.
eetu53 because it wouldn't be America without stupid laws. I think that the people who live there should have an exception, the fact that the school bus driver has to list evey student's name before he can leave is just insane.
I hope that bus driver gets a BIG paycheck. You would think that the guy on the other side of the phone after a while would just know. Like, the bus driver starts talking, Driver: "Ok here's who I got on my bu-" Guard: "I already know..."
I’ve been to lake of the woods and it’s huge and when the wind blows the waves get really big so probably better to play it safe instead of risking lives on the water
I'm an American but it seems just common sense to give the kids who have to travel so far to high school a break and just sign over the angle to Canada. I have relatives in both countries and except for Quebec I don't see much difference. Dual citizenship does make sense.
Also it's not as "secluded" per se because besides school finding and what not, pretty much everything else is close by in Canada because it's Greater Vancouver
I drove in to America while coming back from a trip to Winnipeg back in 2000. There was a small building next to the border, identified by a small sign. A lone man came out and asked me three questions, and I passed. Getting in to Canada was more difficult (scrutinized) than getting into America. Mind you this was pre-911, but it alarmed me all the same.
Oh yeah. I went to British Columbia for an ACDC concert and the border patrol were real rude asking me every question imaginable. When I came back through, the U.S. border patrol agents asked me where I was coming from and when I said ACDC concert they were all smiles and asked me how it was.
I think the Canadian agents are enforcing tax laws with, with returning Canadians, specifically the GST tax which is basically a national sales tax. They say that's how Canada's health care system is funded. The US started the passport requirement as a result of 9/11. As an American crossing the border a handful of times, Canadian agents seemed more ornery than American agents. I've encountered A******s both ways though. Last time entering Canada at Niagara Falls a few months before the pandemic, the agent seemed to have an issue with me driving a rental car. He sent me to secondary inspection.

Christopher Sobieniak and that's why I'm deeply europeist! We need Europe, otherwise we'd just be a bunch of irrilevant countries...

Nahuel Martínez That's actually a very good idea that comes to mind. I didn't think of that.

Don Saito This is super helpful. Thank you so much for that!
Everything about this place seems fantastic, except for all that passport silliness.
As a northern Minnesotan, the border crossing would not be nearly as bad as the winter. That stack of firewood is no joke.
Passport silliness? A passport is your id to the world and your home. Nothing silly about respecting yours and other people's home dude.

Well I live in Ohio, which is a border state. The border being the middle of Lake Erie. I wonder if I can get that here.
Roadstar1602 Closest thing is a Passport Card will set you back about $75. For land and water between the U.S., Canada, Mexico and some islands you would stop at on a cruise, they do the job. Great opportunity for someone to set up a small grocery store!
Yeah, it's amazing that nobody thought of that! Someone could simply get a large truck, buy lots of groceries in mainland Minnesota, and sell them for a big markup back in the Northwest Corner.
R Hamlet they can be transported on a boat through US waters without having to cross a border.
Yeah, right. You'll have all of the 60 customers, mostly kids, to yourself. Hahaha!

I should have read through the comments and found this one before making my own comment about Point Roberts.
While school is a bit complex because of funding and what not, at the very least they can do their grocery shopping a lot closer by in Canada.
Looking at the Google map of this area, no, they really can't do their grocery shopping closer in Canada. There's....nothing....there.
And apparently; Point Roberts used to use British Columbia's area code (604) for many years, how PR's finally linked to a Wash St code.
Why didn't Canada obtain it then? It would make more sense them to have it instead of making americans go thru canada to get to part of the us.

The water is probably frozen for more of the year than it's thawed, making boat travel difficult or impossible. Plus they'd need to find transportation to the store and back once they got to the other side.

People move around too much in the US and Canada for that to be feasible.

Actually, leaving the USA to Canada is not the problem. The problem comes if you are pulled over in Canada for something unrelated, or when entering the USA and encounter border patrols who have no record of you leaving the USA. Also, some difficulties may arise when crossing over the waters at times. If you're legal, have a passport and such though, it used to be that normally just causes a bit of inconvenience and delay. minnesota woods is a good place to go camping get away from noise from the city life
So why they don't take the boat to US?
@dragon The water between the two is entirely in the U.S.
Not sure but that would be about a 15 mile open water boat ride, that’s a tough commute. I’d rather deal with the boarder phone thing.
I’ve been to lake of the woods and it’s huge and when the wind blows the waves get really big so probably better to play it safe instead of risking lives on the water
Good luck doing that during winter
Ferry boats can help.
I'm an American but it seems just common sense to give the kids who have to travel so far to high school a break and just sign over the angle to Canada. I have relatives in both countries and except for Quebec I don't see much difference. Dual citizenship does make sense.
But what if the TERRORISTS try to get dual citizenship?
What about Point Roberts WA? You have to go through Canada to get there as well.
Point Roberts is a little bigger and not as far North. But you are correct.
Also it's not as "secluded" per se because besides school finding and what not, pretty much everything else is close by in Canada because it's Greater Vancouver
There are places like Hyder, AK in the Alaska panhandle that have the same problem.
Skankhunt42 yeah you have to go through Canada to get to Alaska too😉
321thach, There are ferries that go up the coast from Washington to Alaska.
My mother, Doris L Carlson/ Doris L Paskewitz, was a teacher at Angle Inlet School. This must about have been in the 1940's.
So that's what a town without diversity looks like simply beautiful and crime free.
Looks relaxing there
Nicely done. Enjoyed learning about this place!

Wtf is a Winnipeg

I think the Canadian agents are enforcing tax laws with, with returning Canadians, specifically the GST tax which is basically a national sales tax. They say that's how Canada's health care system is funded. The US started the passport requirement as a result of 9/11. As an American crossing the border a handful of times, Canadian agents seemed more ornery than American agents. I've encountered A******s both ways though. Last time entering Canada at Niagara Falls a few months before the pandemic, the agent seemed to have an issue with me driving a rental car. He sent me to secondary inspection.
Man, you just know those ppl have seen Bigfoot.
Big Foot generally resides in the Pacific Northwest, so they may be a little to far east to see one.
@@bunny_0288 Bigfoot doesn't exist. If he did we'd have footage by now. The world is nothing but cameras. Same for the Loch Ness monster.
Bigfoot has been sighted in New Zealand, it's more than a thousand miles across some of the deepest ocean in the world from anywhere. Did he bum a ride with the polynesians, or could it be some folks are predepossed to believe they see big hairy wild people running around?
@@DrLavitz Well, then, obviously Bigfoot and Loch Ness monster doesn't show up on camera, just like vampires. How else do you explain that there are no pictures of vampires?
@@DrLavitz I was making a joke! lol We really need a sarcasm font haha
