Thanks a lot Steven! I had been putting off the problem for weeks, thinking it was something more complicated, and just came across your video. What a relief! Thank you!!!
Hi again Steven, in my case it ended up being the valve stem that needed to be replaced. I guess either the shower head, or the valve stem can restrict water flow and make that high pitched, irritating noise! Thanks again, Jose
Thanks. I replaced the cartridge and that stopped some of the squealing. Removing the shower head I saw a small o-ring that was out of place. Pushing it where it belonged stopped the rest of the noise.
Had the same thing at the other end of the house in the spare bathroom shower, just replaced the washers in the taps and problem was solved. The washers were vibrating in the housing causing our noise.
I also had a problem like this that was stopped y replacing a faulty water intake flushing valve on the toilet! Tried a million things for a year and replacing that finally did it. It was a crazy hammering noise after you turn the shower or other taps off.
As an FYI, it's not always the shower head. Can be the cartridge as well. The whistling might be a different pitch when you take the shower head off, so be listening.
I feel like this is a pretty common problem in older houses. I know you didn't figured out what the problem was, but I appreciate how quickly you found where it was located. A calcium buildup is probably the culprit, and a vinegar soak might make that old head usable again. However, you took the right approach in just replacing the shower head. Not worth your (or the homeowner's) time, trying to fix an old basic shower head. Kudos.
I have a similar, but differnt squeeking noise coming from my shower. When the water is turned off it squeels (very low volume). When I turn the water on then back off again the squeel goes away. in a few hours the noise comes back. Just turning the water on and then back off makes it go away. Help... I'm losing sleep.
Hi Steve, I have a question: at my Mom's the kitchen faucet squeals/whistles when you turn it on. single lever handle. When you move the faucet spout up or down a little (it's not meant to move, but I noticed if tension is put on it it quiets) you can stop the noise briefly. Any ideas on how to cure the problem? Red
I had one of those "squeal" calls last year on a kitchen sink with an in-line filter on it. Not sure why it squealed but changing the filter solved it. Nice work Steve.
I have a horrid squeal coming from someplace near my toilet shutoff valve. It often starts when someone uses the sink, basement shower, or when the heater turns on. My options are to replace the shutoff valve or call a plumber to install a pressure valve near the well. Any other advice? It's so annoying I'm ready to hit it with a sledgehammer.
Laura Woodswalker it is probley a loose washer in the shutoff valve or toilet fill valve .i would beat money on the loose washer in the toilet shut off .. call a plumber to find the issue is your best bet
I have a vibrating noise when the shower head is engaged. It starts about 10-15 minutes after its been on. As soon as i turn off the shower head the noise stops. It seemed to have started after a pipe burst, but in a different area of our house. If you have any suggestions I would be forever grateful!
My shower does the same thing and I have replaced the head with 3 different brands in hope of solving this annoying issue, but have been unsuccessful. Is it possible the shower valve needs to be replaced to get rid of the noise?
Steve, when you go to 1:16 where you remove the old shower head, a foreign object fell out. I've actually seen this before where a prior tradesman sabotaged the shower, perhaps over a dispute. He inserted a dime into the shower head. Something to think about but anyway you're on top of it as usual. Keep up the plumbing vids.
I don't know, I had the same problem in my apartment. Shower head was annoying making that squealing noise every time we used it. I thought as many youtube videos say, must be the shower head. So I thought as well it could be that because every time we changed the setting , it would stop for a while. So, I went and bought a new shower head and NOTHING! still the same squealing problem. I'm fed up! do I have to call a plumber? see why is doing that? Brand new shower head and still does it. :(
I don't have this same shower head, but sometimes ours will squeal, and other times it won't squeal. However, for the past couple of weeks now, every time I turn on the shower, it might squeal for 10 - 15 seconds and then the squealing stops. I'm thinking it's the shower head.
there is a water flow control in new shower hear remove the o ring with dental pick it will give you more water flow and might fix your issue . the whistles is caused by a restriction most shower heads are 2.5 gallon a minute
I mean can’t believe they didn’t try a new head…. I always take a zip lock with lime and calcium cleaner in it and tape it on there or soak once in a while
Um this video is so-so. Something falls hard in tub, and he pretends not to notice. I missed that he changed the shower head. He mumbles something. In comments we see there are different noises coming from different places. We need a better video
You just solved a problem that we've been battling for the last several months. THANK YOU for posting this video!
Thank you!! So generous of you to pass on your knowledge😀

Sometimes it's amazing what people will pay someone else to
do! A shower head is so easy.
they did not know what,, or were it was coming from ..there are renters .so they call the landlord for anything
Huh odd.. Looked like it was in good shape!
-Mike
very odd
Nice fix! Quick and painless. Love the end. Haha
try to remove the flow restictor in the head sometimes its just a oring
squealing is done by a built up of calcium and you need to replace the shower head or sometimes you can dip it in CLR!
I have a brand new shower head squealing... guess I'll take it apart and see if readjusting helps
@@TwoTall1988 if you have hard water a water softener sometimes helps a lot. We had that problem for a bit when we first moved in.
Apparently, the husband needs a tutorial on how to use a wrench.
i just want to say Thanks very much i was in the same boat!! i removed the head and its all fixed omg your a lifesaver
+cazmik thanks for the comment

Most of the time it comes from the spout. Changing the water spout should be the first thing you try. 👍

My shower's squealing, I need a new shower head. My husband says he's going to investigate.

devin van overberghe it might be a loose washer on a shutoff some were is system .
Your killing me with the channellocks. Just destroying the finish on that showerhead. Use the right tool for the job!
Mine only squeals from the hot water (single lever valve).
Naw. I did the same thing. Still has the problem. Now I guess it’s the spout. Thanks for your video though.
Mine was squalling when it was off. It stopped when I turned the water on. Came back with I turned the water off. What does that mean?
My shower does the same thing and I have replaced the head with 3 different brands in hope of solving this annoying issue, but have been unsuccessful. Is it possible the shower valve needs to be replaced to get rid of the noise?
you ever figure it out?
We are still waiting for your answer 6 years later
Wait so the solution is to just buy a new shower head??
Thanks

Good one!!!!
thanks willie
Always Steve!
Mine goes away if I flush the toilet. Could it be something else? My shower head is 10 yrs old and I have a water softener.

I have the same problem!! I just purchased another shower head and its doing the same thing!! Any advice?
Putzlover67 good
Common issue with cheaper heads is the washer gets bad. Replace the washer so you don't need to buy a whole new head.
Mine does it when its off
I've heard a shower head squeal like that before. At least it was a quick fix!
thanks for commenting josiah
What brandof shower head is the new one?
it come out of a symmons temptrol tub/shower valve
I changed the shower head and it still squeals. What else could it be?
you ever figure it out? might be the cartridge inside the handle
I don't have this same shower head, but sometimes ours will squeal, and other times it won't squeal. However, for the past couple of weeks now, every time I turn on the shower, it might squeal for 10 - 15 seconds and then the squealing stops. I'm thinking it's the shower head.

Mine is squealing even when it off??? What is this???
I too have a squealing noise coming from my shower but not from the head it appears to be coming from the base of the shower arm. Very annoying
350 Z remove the shower head and take out the flow control devise some times it just a o ring ,this will give you more flow and might fix the problem
Sometimes is not the shower head, could be build up inside shower arm.
I put a new shower head on, and NOW it whistles. Didn’t before. Other was just old. Ideas?

Mine squealing when water is off
I just took of my shower head, cleaned out the nozzles and the noise was gone. Cost to me $nil.
I added a new shower head and it's still whistling 🤦🏾♀️
my shower doesn't squeal as loud but the pipes do..it's a new LED showerhead
+Wolfcy change the head .if its making noise, remove it if the noise goes away then its the head thats bad
Did this on mine but it still squeals. It sounds like a 90's modem.
you ever figure it out?
@@aaronbaraiya3692 Yeah, it was haunted. So I changed the washers and that fixed it up.
@@sarcasmo57 washers inside the handle?
@@aaronbaraiya3692 Thank you. You are right.
@@sarcasmo57 oh ok :) great
What a waste of money. All this needed was an overnight soak in a bowl of white vinegar to clean out the jets.
The shower in Hitchcock's "Psycho" had a squealing problem too, but I think it was a different kind of problem.
thanks for watching current
I think it was sex in the shower. Plumber cant fix that. :)
Can you fix my
