I have searched high and low on UA-cam to find information that might help me find the cause of a clunking sound you so accurately described in #6 in your plumbing noise causes. Every time I turned on a faucet in my home there was an immediate clunk sound in the water pipes. After finding your post I replaced the pressure balance valve as you recommended on my shower valve and the clucking sound was gone! HALLELUJAH!! I wanted to " THANK YOU" for sharing your experience and knowledge with us out here that are far less informed on these matters. Thanks again!
Man, this video finally put to rest some of my "plumbing paranoia". Thank you so much. I'll be rewatching it as a reminder whenever I notice a weird sound from my pipes and start obsessing about it!
I have a constant humming sound going on that I hear all through the house. I turned off the water to all the toilets and I still heard the humming sound. It's constant it sounds like it is all over the house including both levels. I even hear it in the garage as well. I also turned off all the power to the house and the hum was still there. Thanks much Jim!
There's many cases where some factory miles away caused this sound. There's a famous case of some tire or glass factory in in the north east had a machine that caused an entire town to have a hum and they only found out 25 years later, the day the plant shut down. Turning your master breaker off is a good start things like refrigerators have humming compressors.
Thanks for doing a video that actually makes sense to the layfolk! You didn't seem to mention a low humming I'm getting at home when I turn on water upstairs and downstairs(hot and cold). The sound comes about 1-2 seconds after turning the faucet and sounds like a distant fog horn seemingly below the house...
TheAKK, if you have an RO system you could have a hole in the storage tank bladder. That can make a humming sound. If you have an expansion tank on the water heater or a well tank, those bladders can go bad and make a noise. If you have a pressure regulator on the house, they make noise when they go bad. If you have a boiler system, they also have expansion tanks. That could make a noise if heating your water. I don’t think it could be the faucets if you’re getting the noise both upstairs and downstairs.
@@TheGrumpyPlumber Thank you for the quick and detailed reply (subscribed)! I think you may have hit it on the expansion tank. When my wife gets home I'll have her turn on the faucet and I'll be at the water heaters to verify and then go from there.
We have a clunking noise, but it comes on when any valve is opened…. Washer, shower etc… I am thinking the pressure reducing valve may be having issues
Greetings, been watching your videos all morning....pretty sure i've narrowed down the hammering noise throughout the house to my gas water heater manufactured 01/2005. I never knew about flushing the system so that's never been done. It sounds like, due to it's age, that is not the thing I need to do. As you've suggested, I will be looking for a certified plumber to install a new heater if needed (no "box stores").. Wish me luck and thanks for the advice!
During a bathroom remodel, our other bathroom shower started to make a banging noise coming from inside the wall where the shower valve is. It only happens if we have the valve set to both cold & hot (to make it warm). If we turn it all the way to hot or cold, it stops. My thought was, as the contractors were turning off & on the main water valve to work on the other bathroom, they turned on the water to quick and it ruptured something in the valve. They said it's just air in the pipes and it will go away the more we use the other shower, but I think the valve got messed up. Thoughts?
had a fog horn sound in the walls during or after flushing. I switched out the water supply valve (sits inside your tank with the water supply attached), once replaced the sound went away.
Fog horn sound when open taps in bathroom and kitchen.Recently had plumber out due to low cold water pressure..problem solved. However our expansion cylinder had to be changed also but now hearing these sounds but not all the time.We have adjusted pressure but still making noise.Plumber been out no obvious reasons why this is doing it.Noise wasn't happening before the work was carried out.Your help is much appreciated
Help! Knocking sound inside the wall shared by my bathroom and bedroom! Two knocks every 2 - 4 minutes apart non-stop 24/7 for five days now. Landlords “plumbers” don’t know how to figure it out. NOT correlated with water use, temperature, wind, or weather. It is NOT from anything outside the wall or a window or door. It is NOT a mammal or living creature. Sounds like a pipe knocking but it’s every 2 - 4 minutes 24/7 unchanged by water use.
The only question I have is are you heating the house with a boiler? If you have a boiler, the sound is from either a bad expansion tank or the boiler is getting too hot.
We have a noise like someone pushing a heavy dresser across the floor or a large air compressor sound in our house at random times (sometimes goes days or weeks without hearing it, today I heard it 4 times in a few hours). It comes when there is no water running, the furnace isn't on, or anything else being used. The sound seems loudest on the main level in the living room by the garage. It is decently loud (like an air compressor in another room) and it makes a rumble vibration on the floor. It is not near our water heater, air conditioner, or furnace. It is somewhat close to the water supply turn off. I am at a loss for how to investigate a random sound that seems to have nothing running or plugged in or in use when it occurs! and since it's so random, I can't even get a recording! Is there a possible water line issue that would make noise even when no water is being used? This noise has been noticed off and on for about a year now, and I think it seems to be happening more often. Would love to get some guidance on where to start looking!!!
My hot water heater hissing loudly at the top somewhere and if I shine a light over the exhaust port I can see an ultra fine spray that looks kinda like bubbles popping off the top of a glass after you pour a soda (or pop). The hissing is constant so long as the water supply is on and I do have a small amount of water in the pan, but that hissing is loud (and constant), it sounds identical to a pipe having burst in the wall (guess how I know that sound)... 😮 Thanks for the many video, sharing your years and years of invaluable experience...
@@ComputerGuyAndy I’m sorry that I didn’t get back to you sooner as we have been traveling. You have a leak in your water heater and I hope you have replaced it by now. Appreciate your comments.
the kitchen sink was replaced recently (on our main floor) and since then a "thud" noise / sound is heard from the second floor pipes when we open the kitchen faucet. thanks for telling how do we stop this sound?
An expansion tank is a cylinder that is about 16” long and about 12” in diameter. There is a tank that is smaller which could be 12”x8”. If it’s on a boiler, it’s a larger vessel but you should be able to see it. It’s attached to a large device called an air separater. If you have a water heater, the expansion tank is located on the cold water feed side of the heater.
@mgohar604, you’re introducing cold water to the bottom of the water heater causing the percolating sound. Nothing wrong with the heater. Just live with the noise.
We have been renting an old house for 6 yrs.Last night I put the heat on for the first time and awhile later there were sounds like a water pump running low on water. The sound was from a living room wall with an outlet and on the other side is the kitchen wall with the table and chairs.Have no idea but is scary. After about 10 mins it stopped.
At times, plumbing in one washroom will squeal loudly (like a smoke alarm). This will happen only sometimes when water is running somewhere in the house. Originally sound was coming from one faucet when water turned on anywhere in house. Had cartridge changed and a few other things on that faucet (by a plumber). It still makes the sound (at times)...now I noticed the sound comes from the toilet area of the same washroom! I don't hear it from the faucet lately, just the toilet (at times). Is something moving through the pipe and stuck? I live in an area with hard water. When plumber changed cartridge, he also changed water pressure regulator valve as it had build up and might have had a slight leak. Thank you for your helpful videos and advice.
Mimi Combow, turn the shut off valve on the toilet off and see if the sound goes away. Try this for about a day. If the sound stops, it’s either the fill valve or the shut off valve to the toilet making the sound. If that’s not it, do the same on the lav faucet and see if the noise is gone. Angle stops are notorious for making noise but are seldom checked. If you have the older style compression angle stops that you have to turn off, there is a washer in them that can get loose and make a noise. I’m thinking it’s the fill valve on the toilet.
We got a new dishwasher and had to replace the shutoff valve. We had to turn the water off and since our pipes are in the attic water drained out of the pipes. When all was said and done. We can't seem to get all the air out of the lines. We have opened all lines, we have opened one at a time, we have used the relief valve on the hot water heater, but when we use the hot water, after a bit the heater starts making loud banging sounds. If we use the toilet that is in the room with the hot water heater and someone else is using hot water in another room, the heater really does some serious percolating. We have never had this problem before and we have lived here over 40 years. The hot water heater is 4 yrs old and our pipes are copper and 25 years old. Thanks for any suggestions.
JCE Wilson, water heaters will percolate and they can start making that noise at any time. It’s nothing to worry about. You might want to lower the temperature on the water heater and see how that goes. When you turn on the faucets, do they spit air out? The air and the percolating are two different things. Hard to diagnose with just an email but, putting on the shutoff valve wouldn’t have caused the problem.
@@TheGrumpyPlumber Thanks for your reply. You put my mind at rest. Once in a while one will spit, but not much. I was thinking it could also be this cold snap with hot water running through a cold pipe or cold water going into a water heater that is hot. We have been here a long time and never had this happen. It seems a little better everyday. Sorry to use "hot" water heater. I'm from New Orleans and we also call gutters on the house gutter "cans." Have a great day.
Great video! I'm widow who lives alone, so I appreciate you guys putting my mind at ease about noises I might hear! My current issue is that occasionally I'm hearing a big bang after I flush my toilet. I did have a plumber out about a year ago and he tightened the brackets(?) along the pipes in my basement and installed an arrestor at the pipe that goes from my washer out to the main line. He explained about water hammer, so now I'm extremely nervous that that's what's happening with my toilet and that a pipe may burst in my basement. Do you have any other ideas about what it might be? As I said, it's just the toilet flushing and it doesn't happen every time. Thanks in advance!
My water heater was installed in my family room, behind the master bedroom. When I take a shower or open the faucets of my sink, a there is a bandung sound or a sound d like when you pull a rubber. Is it something to be worried about it? This is driving me crazy. Thanks a lot. I hope you can help me because it's a new house.
@@isabelb.4518 if they installed an expansion tank on the water heater, it could be the expansion tank making that noise. Since it’s a new house, call the plumber back.
Hey... so my kitchen sink sprayer(separate), was really lacking in power so, I changed it out with original part. Handle and hose unit from the company. So, the pressure is marginally better but now it has that sound that I found out is called hammer. So, I've seen a video that says to shut off the water in the basement, drain the water from top to bottom, then close up the taps and turn the water back on. Before I do this, does this sound like the right thing to try? Thanks
what happens after freezing below 0 temperatures and temperatures warm up and you can still hear running water in your pipes when the faucets are turned off
Good video. I was hoping I might find an answer for why I have a high pitch whistling noise that seems to be coming from a bathroom faucet that I can hear when the water is off. The noise stops when running water in the house and then resumes when the water is turned off. Sometimes the noise lasts for ten minutes, other times much, much longer. We do have an expansion tank. I'm not sure that would be causing any issue. That is located in the basement. The noisy faucet is on the second floor.
I am redeemed, you answered your own question, it’s the expansion tank. It has a hole in the rubber bladder. If you have a well tank, that could also have a hole in the bladder. If you have a drinking water system, like an RO, that has a bladder tank.
Hello @@TheGrumpyPlumber. Thank you for replying to my comment. I appreciate your input. I'm so glad I found your video. We are planning on replacing the expansion tank soon. Thanks again!
@@randellmathews5961 Yes we did. It wasn't the expansion tank or the faucet. It was a part in the toilet tank that needed replaced. Thank you for your question.
For a couple weeks I have been getting thumping/thuds that start late evening and continues through the morning. It stops midday but starts again in the evening. I wonder if it is from the sprinkler system or a neighbors hot water heater.
My home was built in the mid 80s. Just today we started hearing a banging when out toilet in the main bath gets flushed or the cloths washer is running in the next room. Bathrooms in other parts of the house are silent. The room in the basement where the gas water heater and water service is quite.
Have you checked your water pressure? The best place to check is at the water heater drain. You’re probably getting an air hammer. The toilet and wash machine are quick closing valves. First turn off the water to the house. Do you have a hot and cold valve in the basement? If so, open both of them to the on position. Open all the faucets in the house and let them run until they all drain to the lowest level. Then turn all the faucets off and turn water back on. Open up each faucet until you get all the air out. These steps might stop the air hammering. If not, you might have a bad fill valve on the toilet. open the faucets one at a time
When sink faucet is fully opened it makes a motor/grinding noise but stops if flow is cut back. House built in 1940. Bought house 5 years ago so don't know complete plumbing history. Thank you.
Maria Madrid, are they compression valves? That means they have a washer and a seat. That could mean the washer is loose. If it’s a single handle faucet, you need to repair it. Check that out.
@@TheGrumpyPlumber hey thanks, Grumpy! Turns out the inlet valve under sink had been turned down (kids?). Opened it all the way and noise stopped. Got replacement parts anyway in case I need them later. Thanks!
We recently put a tankless water heater in our home. When they did that two floors up from that they put a pump that’s supposed to recycle the hot water faster. Ever since that we have heard loud noises that sound like a water droplet in our walls. You know some people can flick the side of their cheek and make a noise. It sounds just like that but louder… any ideas?
@@chrisfrate I suggest you call the the person who installed your heater back and have them find out what’s wrong. Sounds like you have air in the pipe and he should have put a bleeder on the circulating line.
I noticed when I run my shower upstairs I can hear the water in the pipes downstairs. It’s like a swooshing sound. Should I be concerned? I’ve never had this issue before & but this is a new home.
I have a brand new home and in the basement there’s a completed bath; when the toilet is flushed or water turns off we’re getting a loud thumping sound; the builders plumber thought it was the water pressure and turned it down however it’s still happening
Great channel! I just replaced my 20 year old electric water heater with a new one. The new one gurgles (sounds like air bubbles) every few minutes! I was thinking of emptying it and refilling to make sure it's full. Any ideas?
You’ve got me stumped. As you use hot water, cold water replaces it immediately. Are you sure the noise is coming from the water heater? I’ve had water heaters that were two week old that started percolating. If that’s what it is, you can drain it but the sound will probably come right back. It’s not hurting anything.
Had a tankless water heater installed with a recirc pump with a crossover valve...now getting a knocking sound in the wall sporadically after the recirc pump runs so knocking sound happens when no water running, but fairly persistent knock every 30-45 seconds for a few minutes, then starts again after next cycle. Hammer associated with the valve? Air in the line? PRV on main line and pressure sits around 50 psi. Thank you!
I don’t know what brand of on demand water heater you have. Every manufacturer tells you the way they want the circ line hooked up. You could have a problem with the check valve if one was installed. I’d call the manufacturer and ask them if the circ pump was installed correctly.
@@jasweett the way to check the expansion tank is to see if the bladder has gone bad. Disconnect it from the water line after you relieve the pressure. The best way to relieve the pressure is to turn off the supply line from the water heater and open a faucet until the water stops flowing. Turn the faucet off. ( The expansion tank should have been installed between the shut off valve and the water heater on the cold supply side.) If installed somewhere else, you need to shut off the water supply to the house, open a hot water faucet to drain the pressure down and then close it. When you take the tank off, if it’s really really heavy, the bladder has gone bad and the expansion tank needs to be replaced. If it feels light and empty of water, the tank is still good. It probably is the expansion tank making the noise. I don’t know if you have any other equipment around the water heater that could be making that noise.
Thank you for this video, really appreciate it! I just replaced a washer for a leaky spigot outside the house in the front. Later when the toilet was used in the 2nd floor, there was a loud like sound before it flushed and it went away the 2nd time. Is this due to any pressure which may have built up in the pipes when I turned off the water supply to fix the leaky spigot?
@stopcat5992, there was probably air in the pipe. The toilet was probably the first fixture you used and, when you flushed it, it caused the fill valve to chatter.
Hey, Mr Jim We have a drill well but we have an issue. Water comes out of out pipes forcefully as if spitting water out almost like it has air inside… When this happens with the toilets, it sounds like they’re about to explode and it also does it with the washing machine and dishwasher… My husband has installed an oxidation system to keep our water clean… Not sure what type of problem this is or if our we’ll is going bad. Any help would be greatly appreciated or suggestions of what to check
@@lorasteger6205 you have a submersible well, correct? That means the pump is hanging on a pipe inside the well casing. At the bottom of the pipe, just before the pump, there is normally a check valve. That valve could be leaking slowly and draining the water out of the pipe. So when the well pump comes on, it pushes the air out first before you get water. That could be one issue to check. Have you heard of wells drying up or having the water level drop in your area? Do you have a galvanized tank or a bladder tank? I hope you have a bladder tank but they can go bad. Easy way to check…..you can grab the tank and shake/ move it. If it doesn’t move and it feels real heavy, that indicates that the bladder has ruptured. Even though the bladder tanks can be quite large, there is very little water in them. That’s why it’s easy to move. Does the oxidation system have an air vent on it? It might be releasing water. I think the problem is in the well. Check these out.
Great format and demeanor! What are the sounds associated with inadequate or blocked venting? As part of remodeling, I disconnected the vent stack and attempted to compensate for the loss of venting through use of an air admittance valve. Subsequently toilet flushing, laundry or other rapid draining results in an obnoxious belching noise from that general area. I'm wondering if the AAV is too small, and am hearing the pipes rattle from pressure as the system draws in air beyond the capacity of the AAV. After a handful of seconds, the sound goes away, crickets. Thanks.-JH.
When a vent is not working, you’ll get a gurgling sound. When you flush a toilet, you’ll get a sound from a lav or tub drain because it sucks the trap dry to get air. You might have bought a cheap mechanical vent that might not be working properly. Hopefully, you have access to this vent. I recommend a studor vent that comes in at 1 1/2”, 2”, 3” and 4”. Rule of thumb…. When using a 3” drain, you can use a 1 1/2” vent.
Thanks for making this video! I hear constant low and motor engine like sound in my house. It becomes clearer at night. But when I put my ears against the wall to hear the sound, I can’t hear anything. I’ve asked technician to check water tank, furnace and air conditioner, they don’t find them to make any noise. Also I asked worker to check the roof, they don’t find anything wrong. My kitchen appliances function well. What do you think makes the noise? It’s annoying and disturb my sleep. Thanks!
Candy Li, here is a list of things to check out the noise: if you have a water well, do you have an expansion tank? Do you have an expansion tank on your water heater? If you have an RO drinking system, the expansion tank can make noise. Do you have a circulating pump on the water heater? When expansion tanks are going bad, they can make a moaning sound. But, you usually hear the noise during the day, not at night.
Thanks for the reply. The vent is Oatey or Studor. I do have access to it, it might be undersized and will test for this by Removing it and then flushing the toilets.
Thank you for this video. I have noticed a constant knocking sound in the wall between the master bathroom and the laundry room. Hot water heater is in that laundry room, but this sound is more than just pipes ticking because of hot/cold adjustments. It's an almost constant drum beat. Like bubbles in a fish tank. Could it be that the pipe vent is clogged? Something to do with the septic airator? Pipes not pressurized correctly? I really cant figure this out.
@@jfleming4439 sounds to me it’s the water heater percolating. What causes this noise is, when you use hot water, it adds cold water instantly and that makes that “percolating sound”. This happens only on gas heaters. You can drain the heater and refill it. The noise goes away for awhile but usually returns. You probably notice it when doing your laundry because your water heater is in the laundry room. It doesn’t hurt anything. Another possibility……The water heater vent has a metal diverter in the center which sometimes can make a funny noise. You can pull it and put a twist in it and that might stop the noise. If you hear the noise in the wall, that’s probably the pipe touching a wood stud and making some kind of noise. That could be a major job to fix so you might just need to live with the noise.
Yeah, I got a question... each time I turn on my faucets ((in the bathroom and kitchen)) water comes out slow... I tried this with both hot and cold water, and it still comes out slow. Also... when I have the water turned on, it also "spits" at times...? I went downstairs into my basement ((where the water pipes are at while the water is *TURNED OFF*)), and I'm hearing water running through them quite loudly too, but I don't see any leakage or anything like that...?
The top line on my water heater is vibrating looks to be the cold it just started doing it this evening. Also the shower sometimes makes a vibrating noise. Usually it will stop when I turn the valve. I’m not running any water at the moment anywhere in the house and the line on top of the water heater is still vibrating. Thanks for your help
You probably have pressure balance tub/ shower valves in your house and one of the cartridges is bad. There is a small spring and ball bearing in the cartridge. You need to replace the whole cartridge. P.S. If you have a few in your house, I recommend you repair all of them.
Thanks for the video. I am on a well system and I turned on my irrigation system and it appears there is a noise around the water pump. The noise went away when I turned off the irrigation system. I thought that it might be the pressure balance system. Please advise
You might have a bad check valve located near the pump. It could be the foot valve at the bottom of the well. When you mentioned the pressure balance system are you talking about the storage tank bladder or the pressure switch?
Help! I live in a mobile home and have pet pipes. After I run the water at my kitchen sink (mainly the hot water) there’s knocking/thumping sounds coming from under my dining room floor. I’ve had the pressure valve changed and lowered water pressure from 100 to 63 but it did not help. It also happens sometimes even when I’m not running the water. This may not be related, but coincidentally around the same time the thumping sound started my floor boards in dining room started to make creaking/snapping sound. Do you have any idea of what could be causing the knocking/thumping sound under my floor?
My sink sounds like a hammer beating my kitchen sink to pieces when I turn my hot or cold water on in my kitchen sink. It’s never done that before. I looked at the expansion tank under the kitchen sink. It lays on its side because it has some brackets for it to lay on its side when I push in the little button where the pressure is there’s no air coming out, but there’s no water coming out either. What do I do?
@@ursularoberts2739 the tank under the kitchen sink is for the reverse osmosis faucet. If the kitchen sink faucet is making the noise, then there is a problem there with the faucet. Replace the kitchen faucet. If it’s the RO faucet, you have to replace the tank.
@@isabelb.4518 your sound might be coming from the gas burner in your water heater. That might be caused from a gas pressure problem. Or, it could be the burner itself. Hi, Mr. Plumber, I have a sound coming from the supply line from within the wall that the downstairs toilet has a compression shut off valve, it's not leaking. I shut off the outside main shutoff valve and the running water sound was still there. I went to shut off main water valve at the meter and the sound went away. What could be making the running water sound.. could it be air in water supply line or the supply line shutoff valve is bad ? I'm puzzled to see if what is causing the vibration. It sounds like running water inside the wall, but the meter has a red gear that is not showing any water usage. But the sound is still there... it can't be a busted pipe no water is coming out from the wall? Or the water meter is not showing water usage..! Any suggestions? Thank you..! I have a video of the sound of the first floor supply line in the bathroom toilet.. Do you have an email address that I can send you the video.
@@AROD500500 you answered your own question……if the little red triangle on the water meter is not moving, then there is no water flow into the house. The vibration could be a compression angle stop. Turn the angle stop real tight and then open it back up and if the sound is still there, you need to replace the angle stop.
If I run the cold water at my kitchen sink and then shut the water off, there is a brief (around 1 sec) chirping nose coming from somewhere else in the house. (I am not quite sure where, but it is not really close to the kitchen sink). It is not real loud, but definitely noticeable. The problem doesn't happen with hot water. The problem doesn't happen at any other faucet/tub/shower in the house. What might this be?
@PeterSramka, you might have a problem with an angle stop that has a loose washer. If you have quarter turn angle stops, there are no washers. You might have a problem with a tub shower valve with a bad piston in the valve. Do you have an RO expansion tank or an expansion tank on the water heater? One could have a hole in the bladder. Hi Grumpy Plumber, I live in central California my house was built in 1974, I get Brown water when I turn on my bath water sometimes in the sink to, Do I need to re pipe? Or can I do something else to fix this issue
arnulfo delgadillo, is it the hot or cold water that is coming in brown? If it’s the hot water, I would recommend draining the heater and flushing and refilling it. As your house was built in 1974, they might have used galvanized pipe nipples on the tub spout instead of brass nipples. They probably used galvanized nipples on the bathroom sink angle stops. Go in and change the nipples to brass. You shouldn’t have to repipe the house.
Do you have any idea why water pressure would build up on the bathroom and cause a high pitch sound? When I flush the toilet or turn on and off the shower, the high pitch sound goes away 🤔 please help. Maybe my water heater needs to be replaced 🤔
First thing you need to do is check your water pressure. The best place to check it is at the water heater drain. Make sure the burner is not running when you check it. Turn a faucet on for about 3 seconds and then turn back off. Read the pressure on the gauge. Good pressure is between 50 to 62 lbs. Next thing I want you to do is turn the burner on the water heater up as high as it goes. Watch and see if the thermostat climbs above 100 lbs. If that happens, you need to install an expansion tank on the cold water inlet side of the heater. Thermo expansion can cause problems. This info is only if you have a gas heater. If you have an electric heater, the pressure gauge will tell you the house pressure only. You don’t get thermo expansion on an electric heater. The high pressure might be causing the whistling sound. You can buy a pressure gauge that has two dials on it. One side shows the house pressure and the red dial will show how high the pressure can increase. If the house pressure creeps up slowly, and someone opens a faucet, the second gauge will stay at the high pressure while the first one will drop down to normal pressure. That would show that you have a bad pressure regulator and not thermo expansion. Replace the regulator. The problem is not the water heater. It’s either thermo expansion or the regulator. Hope this helps.
P. S. You can purchase a pressure gauge on Amazon. It comes with a hose attachment so it can be attached to the drain at the bottom of the heater. Cost -$13.99.
Thanks for this info. My well system recently started having a very loud vibration inside the house (Not at the well itself). Pressure Tank (and the whole system) is less than 2 years old. It only happens when the Well Pump 1st turns on, and then slowly quites after a few moments.

Question... We had plumbers come out, they worked on a leak above the ceiling in our master bedroom. On the day they were finally down with the project, a loud vibrating/humming sound came about after they turned the water back on. The sound has now been on going for two days. We called them and they came out. They shut the water off the noise went away. 45 minutes later the noise came back. Any ideas as to what it could be? One guy said maybe they turned on the water too fast? Another one said it might coming from a leak in the boiler room?
Rebeca Andrade, do you have an expansion tank on the water heater? When the bladder goes bad, they can making a squealing sound. You might have debris in your tub and shower valves. You might have to change the cartridges. You can isolate the sound by turning off the angle stops at the fixtures. Turn one angle stop on at a time and keep going until you hear the sound. That might tell you which fixture is making the sound.
I have a question. About 2 months ago, our water company shut down the line for repairs. About two weeks after it was back on, the pipe where the water goes into my toilet started singing after flushing. What is it and what to do
Hi, I bought this house about 4 years ago. There are 3 showers in the house all have Kohler valves and there about 20 years old. About a month ago the shower (Only) on the second floor started to have s shrill whistle occasionally. Speaking with Kohler they recommended changing the 2 piece pressure vulve and the control valve. After I did that a few hours later the whistle was back, it lasts for about 30 to 45 seconds. Suggestions?
Is there an expansion tank on the water heater, RO system, or bladder type well tank? When the tank goes bad, they can make that shrill noise. If you have a hot water heating system, it could be the expansion tank on the boiler. It could also be the fill valve on the toilet. It doesn’t happen when the shower is running so it’s not the shower valves making the noise.
Thank You. I’ll replace the toilet valve and see if that stops the whistle. We do not have an expansion tank on the hot water or a well tank. City water.
I want to thank you so much, I never thought of changing the toilet tank fill valve, I purchased a kohler fill valve a little expensive but that resolved my issue! All quiet Thanks again for your advise and experience!!!!
Glad I helped. The next time don’t buy a Kohler fill valve because it’s a Fluid Master fill valve, costing less than $10 at Home Depot. Fluid Master is the flip valve a lot of toilet manufacturers use.
@@TheGrumpyPlumberFunny you say that I bought the kohler fill valve at home depot, the kohler came in a nice box for double the money. When I opened the box to replace the valve it was stamped kohler on top and then on the shut off it was stamped Fluid Master. Thanks Again for your advise and experience!!!
In our old house with crawl space, the kitchen sink clogs regularly. Our son lives there and doesn't cook much there or use the sink as often. It took a lot of effort but I used a plunger and was successful. The sink now drains without filling up the sink when the water is running. However, even after the water has all drained out and I keep plunging, there continues to be a slushing of water somewhere down the drain. Do I need to call a plumber?
I would recommend a good, honest drain cleaner. Wouldn’t hurt to give it a good cleaning. Just the kitchen drain as I’m assuming you’re not having any other issues. If the drain cleaner company says that you have major problems, which I doubt, just pay him and send him on his way.
The noise I hear has one second between each drip sound inside the wall when upstairs bathroom sink is turned on I hear it downstairs. Does that mean it’s a water drip inside the wall?
Do you notice any water damage on the outside of the wall? You can hear water dripping in a pipe if the traps do not have a good seal. You have a pretty good drip going on. Look for water and wet walls. Have you checked to make sure you don’t have drippy faucets?

Any advice about a banging noise that seems to come from the water main into the house? I have a shutoff after the main before it goes to the rest of the house that I turned off and it still knocks really hard several times a day. Is there something in the water pit before coming in my house that could be bad?
A swing check valve could bang. RP devices can make noises because of the check valve. The foot valve at the bottom of my submersible well banged because the well was over 300 ft. deep. It sounds like you might have a problem with the check valve.
Suddenly developed a very light hammer Noise (almost hard to hear) lasts about tens seconds. Happens in static situation, water off. comes back about every 5-10 minutes. Noise most apparent in shower wall. Has single vale shower facet.
You need to repair the shower valve by installing a new cartridge. You have a pressure balance valve and the piston inside the cartridge is causing that chattering.
After changing the valve in the kitchen, we started hearing noises in the bathroom wall between the toilet and the shower. Coincidentally, a few days later, also change the valve in the shower. The noise happens after using the shower and also flushing the toilet. It is a vibrating, banging noise like the pipe, vibrating against the wall, repetitively almost like as if you had pressed the spring on a door stopper. What do we do to fix? I can send a recording.
If you have an angle stop on the toilet that is a compression valve, the washer might be loose inside it. Just replace it. If you put in a pressure balance shower valve, you might have a bad cartridge, even if it’s brand new. Replace the cartridge. You may have old globe valves on the hot and cold shower supplies that have washers inside that became loose. It would be wise to replace the hot and cold shut off valves. Hopefully you can find the problem.
I hear loud "water flow" noise stemming from the main input water shut-off valve, traveling to my washer hose, and water heater, nearest the main valve... however, when the main valve is shut off the water flow noise stops. No leaks in the house... no water hammer (I know that sound). No videos on YT addresses this issue. What say you, sir?
@lol_05.76, turn the water supply off to the water heater and see if the noise goes away. If it does, you might have a leak at an underground water pipe if the plumbing is in the concrete. Check your toilet tanks and see if water is flowing over and into the overflow tube. If so, you need to replace the fill valve. Turn the water off to the whole house, wait about a half hour, and check all the toilet tanks and see if the one or more tanks are empty. Replace the flush valve or flapper if that is the case. Check to see if you have an RP device for the irrigation as that might need to be repaired or replaced. Also check the T&P valve on the water heater. I say you check these things out.
Hi , my tap in the bathroom has suddenly started hissing every 60/90 seconds it’s not running when this happens ? Can you tell me what I should do , thank you
@@MaryGibson-b7p might be your water heater overheating and causing high pressure. I definitely recommend you get a respectable plumber to check it out.
Why does my outdoor hose bib make a thump and slight whistle noise when I turn my kitchen faucet on? I replaced the washer on my outdoor faucet due to a leak
@@ryanmayo4750 check your water pressure on the drain at the bottom of your water heater. After you install the pressure gauge, turn your gas as high as it will go and see if the temperature gauge climbs. If it climbs, you might have thermo expansion and you need to add an expansion tank on the cold inlet side of your water heater. If you have an electric water heater, you won’t get thermo expansion but it’s a good place to check the water pressure on your water system. If you have a well, you shouldn’t have high water pressure. If you have city water, you can get high water pressure, that’s why you have a pressure regulator. Pressure regulators have about a ten year life. Check this out and also recheck your hose bib to make sure that new washer is tight.
@@bexaminer1 if you have a pressure regulator, that could be making that noise. If you have a well tank with a bladder, the bladder could have a hole in it that could cause whistling.
how do I tell if my well ( 30 years old) is bad or my well pump ( 9years old ) or the bladder.? We are hearing noises after using water and it takes a while to quiet down
I would guess the bladder in the well tank is the problem as they only last about five years. A good way to check is; turn the water off, drain the tank and if the tank can be moved very easily, that means the tank is still good. Another way is, when you drain it and the water only runs for less than a minute, that means the tank is good.
I just started noticing a humming noise when I turn on my kitchen sink . this been happening the last couple days. What are your suggestions? What do I do?
@@christineherrera1387 turn the angle stops off and give them an extra turn to tighten them. Turn them back on and see if the noise goes away. If that doesn’t work, remove the aerator, turn the water on and see if the noise is still there. If the noise is gone, clean the aerator, reinstall it and turn faucet on and see if humming is gone. If not, get a new aerator. If you take the aerator off and the noise is still there, it might be the cartridge making the noise. If this is a high end faucet like $400-600 and has a pull out spray, you can remove the handle from the hose and remove the check valve in the spray head and see if that stops the noise. Check these out.
@@tbb7458 if your condo is above the garage and you hear water running in the pipes in the ceiling of the garage, it could be a running toilet. It could be from your toilet or someone else’s toilet.
I am hearing a fairly loud and seemingly violent vibration when my sink water heat up. I do not hear it before the water turns warm. But it seems to be coming from behind the wall where my sink is upstairs. I am also seeing a brown discharge coming through the sink faucet; home was built in 1924. Any thoughts or do you have an email address where I can send you a video? Thanks for any help you can offer!!
@@taravellaj do you have the original tub and shower valves in the house? Do you have faucets with rubber washers instead of ceramic cartridges? The screws holding the rubber washers could be loose, causing them to vibrate. The brown water coming through the sink faucet could be coming from the old galvanized pipes.
I live in an apartment building. We have a common water line coming in, now even if my neighbour upstairs is using some tap, i get whistling and vibration from my main incoming pipe
We have had two plumbers out with no success. When we have a shower and the gas hot water tank is reheating, if we flush the closest toilet to the hot water tanks it rattles the wall. It doesn’t do this at any other time if the water heater is not heating. Pressure is good to the house. They checked the pressure release valves and pressure in the expansion tanks and found nothing. Any thoughts would be appreciated
Replace the cartridge in the shower faucet. It could be a bad piston in the pressure balance valve.Replace the angle stop at the toilet. It could be a loose washer in the angle stop. If you have pressure balance tub/ shower valves, you probably have a bad cartridge.
Hi, my house was built in 1982. when I turn on the shower, sounds like waterfalls appear in the kitchen sink area. Underneath the kitchen sink there is a white tank looks like the one you show here, and there are water filters, but when I didn't hear any sounds under the sink though, the sound is heard up on the corner wall by the cabinet, but there is no water pipe up 5 feet high on the wall. What could be cause?
You could have a bad RO tank. If you can lift the tank easily, then it’s fine but if it is very heavy to lift, then the tank has gone bad and needs to be replaced. Another thing….if the RO drain is connected between the basket strainer and the p- trap, it makes a water running noise. The easiest way to fix that is to connect the drain on the outlet arm of the p- trap. The water in the p-trap will silence the noise. You hear that noise when the RO is making drinking water.
Sometimes we hear what sounds like rushing water through the pipes...oil heat, forced hot water. Didnt always hear this. Just started recently and even if theres no water running no one flushing a toilet or turning a faucet on...can just be sitting watching tv and hear it. Any idea of what that could be?
@@TheGrumpyPlumber yes hot water heat.....thank you. I will look into that. At least I have an idea of what needs to be done so I'm not flying blind. I appreciate the reply. Thanks.
We’re hearing a whistling sound around our water pressure regulator whenever we use water anywhere in our home. Is this from high pressure? Would I be able to adjust on my own?
isoygblitz, a whistling or vibration sound usually indicates a bad pressure regulator and you need to replace. If it is a type that has double unions, they are fairly easy to replace. The only time it’s hard to replace is when they didn’t allow enough room to get it in and out. A way to check this is to disconnect one of the unions and see how much play you have.
@@TheGrumpyPlumber Thanks for the reply. Turns out the noise was actually coming from the toilet fill valve. The tub sits right next to the toilet and and it sounded like it was coming from the tube. I would turn on and off the shower and the noise would go away, but I read in another forum that I should check the fill valve and that's what it was! Never heard a fill valve do that so that threw me off.
My garage wall shakes bad when sprinkler system is on. There are water regulator and sprinkler timer from inside near the wall and there’s water meter outside near the wall. Do you know what could be the problem? Thanks
What about a sound like there’s air in the lines? It just started a couple hours ago. You flush the toilet in the master bath and it makes a “Pshh…psh-psh-psh……pshhhhh” as the water is refilling. Once it’s filled, no more noise. I also noticed a quick couple noises that are similar in the sink closest to the toilet when I turned the cold water on. The toilet flushes totally fine. I looked in the tank and I noticed a lot of black floating debris. It was on the surface of the water and clinging to the sides at the water line. That is new. I have never seen black stuff floating in that tank before.
When you flush the toilet, have you watched the tank refill? The noise might be coming from the fill valve. If it is, replace it. When replacing it, remove the flapper, flush and clean the debris and it will drain down through the fill valve outlet. Keep an eye on the faucet. I don’t think you have a leak.
Hi Jim. My pipes whistle in my downstairs bathroom anytime water runs in the house. The whistling stops if I turn the water valve off below the toilet. Can you help me?
You mean you turn off the water supply to the toilet? If it is, change the fill valve in the toilet tank. If you are on a pressure regulator, check your incoming pressure. Best spot to do that is on the drain of the water heater. There should be no more than 60 pounds of pressure on the house side of the pressure regulator.
I started to hear squeaky sound low pitch and continuous after flushing the toilet and when the tank was filled. Now I hear that in both of my toilets when turning off both hot and cold water. It does not sound like water hammer, what else can it be?
@@sbs1687 do you have a well tank? If so, the bladder is probably gone and that could be making the noise. If it does it only when you flush the toilet, I’d replace the fill valve.
About 1:34 timer on the video I heard that sound like a woodpecker on steroids! Thats exact same sound Ive got on the pipping of my house. Neve suspected the water heater exponsion tank will be the culprit! Thank you pal! Great video...
Guess what pal. I have spent weeks watching what so called experts on how to fix things turned out to be only handy men far from being expert! You're the man! The water heater expension tank diaphragm was ruptured and was wreaking havoc on the plumbing in my house. I installed a new water heater expension tank today and the water hummering went away. Thank you.
When using the spray gun at the kitchen sink, a loud, high pitch noise starts. Should the spray gun be replaced? The spray gun is separate from the faucet. Thanks for your videos !
In the body of your kitchen sink faucet there is a diverter for the hand spray. You need to remove the spout to get to it. A lot of old brand names have replacement parts. The first thing I would do is remove the spray head and see if it makes a noise. If it doesn’t, it’s probably the spray head that needs to be replaced.
We had a new bathtub and a vanity/sink installed. Whenever the hot water is running and going down the drain, there is loud banging sound once every few seconds or so. What is this due to and how can I fix this?
Enjoyed the video. I have a problem with bathroom sink. I hear air coming from the drain sounds like if you are blowing into an instrument. Any ideas why.
I recently installed a recirculation pump @ my water heater and replaced a leaking valve @ my shower. Ever since I have a constant ( loud ) noise at my shower valve when I decrease the hot and increase the cold.
Fred2324, sounds to me like you have a pressure balance valve in your shower. There is a balancing spool in the valve that’s probably causing that noise. To test it, turn off the circulating pump for a few days. If the noise goes away, repair the valve with a new cartridge. Make sure you have the direction of water flow coming back towards the heater.
I have a clicking noise coming from the main line entering my house, when I run water. I have a water pressure regulator and the meter there. I don't feel any vibration at all in the pipes and they are well secured. I can't tell if the sound is coming from the pressure regulator or the meter. I know there is a spring in the pressure regulator, I imagine it could be this moving in and out. Again, no vibration at all in the pipes. I changed the regulator about 2 years ago. The psi had been 115, its now 52. Any thoughts or concerns? Thank you!
We have city water sir and noticed low pressure from our bathroom faucet(cleaned the aerator) and thought we fixed the problem. Then the washing machine valve quit having water come out on the cold side the same day. And now the bathroom faucet won’t have water more than drips coming out. Any ideas on where to begin looking or what to troubleshoot? Thanks
There are screens on the hose or washing machine connections that need to be cleaned or changed. Clean the faucet aerator again and it will probably work. If you turn the water off to the house or any valve connected to the house, turn the valves back on slowly.
In my townhouse, several times throughout the day, we'll hear loud thuds. Not knocking, clunking, or ticking. It sounds like when those guys that deadlift 200+ pounds drops the weight on the floor and the whole gym can hear it. We've been dealing with this noise for a year now but neither us nor the neighbor is doing anything to cause it. Sounds like it's behind the wall by the bathroom upstairs. Any thoughts?
Do you have expansion tanks on your water heaters? They can make that noise when they go bad. Back in the 90’s all the shower valves had to be pressure balance. The valves have a piston and they can make a noise, like when you flush a toilet or the irrigation goes on. Any change in water pressure can cause the valve to make a noise. You need to have new cartridges installed if that is the problem.
You made my day. Thank YOU 😊
Man, this video finally put to rest some of my "plumbing paranoia".
@Bobby what caused the noise? How did you obliterate it?
Constant humming-me too. Can’t figure it out
There's many cases where some factory miles away caused this sound. There's a famous case of some tire or glass factory in in the north east had a machine that caused an entire town to have a hum and they only found out 25 years later, the day the plant shut down. Turning your master breaker off is a good start things like refrigerators have humming compressors.
I am late to this chat but I am hearing this now and can’t figure out what’s causing the vibrating noise throughout the house.
It would be very helpful if you have recordings of the actual sounds so we can zzcompare them to what we’re hearing in our house. 🥹
YES! This would be helpful

Hi, thanks for the video. My pipes make noises when I open or close any faucets in the house or after flushing a toilet.
Thanks, Dad. I got a good lesson from your lecture. Thank you and wish you long live.

Thoughts?

If you have a boiler heating your house and the hot water, it might be a bad expansion tank. Have that checked out.
Thanks a lot, for your prompt answer.
Please inform me, where can I locate the expansion tank? Thanks.

What is it when you turn on faucets that it makes a loud sound that I can only describe as a fog horn??? Help!!!
Change the fill valve in the toilet. That’s the cheapest thing to try.
Hi there, can we get an update. Did changing the fill valve solve the problem?
My water heater was installed in my family room, behind the master bedroom. When I take a shower or open the faucets of my sink, a there is a bandung sound or a sound d like when you pull a rubber. Is it something to be worried about it? This is driving me crazy. Thanks a lot. I hope you can help me because it's a new house.
@@isabelb.4518 if they installed an expansion tank on the water heater, it could be the expansion tank making that noise. Since it’s a new house, call the plumber back.
same noise of rubber
Hey... so my kitchen sink sprayer(separate), was really lacking in power so, I changed it out with original part.
Thanks
@@robertl1244 that process will work so give it a try.
what happens after freezing below 0 temperatures and temperatures warm up and you can still hear running water in your pipes when the faucets are turned off
Having the same issue-turn off main, all other ‘sounds’ and can still hear what seems like water running through my pipes
Did you find the problem?
@@randellmathews5961 Yes we did. It wasn't the expansion tank or the faucet. It was a part in the toilet tank that needed replaced. Thank you for your question.
@I_am_redeemed was it the fill valve? Also is the noise still gone?

@@Licia7377 no, don’t be concerned.
@@TheGrumpyPlumber thanks for the input! I'll contact them (Rinnai)
I have a rotational sawing type noise next to water heater. That expansion tank is within 2ft of noise?
@@TheGrumpyPlumber Thank you, haven't heard it after that.
Hey, Mr Jim
We have a drill well but we have an issue.
Candy Li, P. S. If you have a circulating pump on the water heater, that’s probably where the sound is coming from. Check that out.
Did you find out what it was? I’m having the same sound and it’s driving me crazy!!!

Perhaps the hot water pipes are touching some wood, causing the noise.

@@AROD500500 you answered your own question……if the little red triangle on the water meter is not moving, then there is no water flow into the house. The vibration could be a compression angle stop. If I run the cold water at my kitchen sink and then shut the water off, there is a brief (around 1 sec) chirping nose coming from somewhere else in the house.

Rebeca Andrade, do you have an expansion tank on the water heater? When the bladder goes bad, they can making a squealing sound. You might have debris in your tub and shower valves. In our old house with crawl space, the kitchen sink clogs regularly. Our son lives there and doesn't cook much there or use the sink as often. It took a lot of effort but I used a plunger and was successful. The sink now drains without filling up the sink when the water is running.

I'm hearing a whistling sound now. It started yesterday and it happens no matter where I turn the water on. Any thoughts on that?
@@bexaminer1 if you have a pressure regulator, that could be making that noise. If you have a well tank with a bladder, the bladder could have a hole in it that could cause whistling.
If you have a pressurized toilet, an RO tank or any tank with a bladder in it, that could make a whistling sound when they go bad.
how do I tell if my well ( 30 years old) is bad or my well pump ( 9years old ) or the bladder.?
I hear water movement in the plumbing underneath my condo. I am located on the 2nd floor and garage is on the first floor. Thanks in advance.
Badal, if your building has a pressure regulator, that’s probably what’s causing the noise. Tell your management company to check it out.
You said you have hot water heat, correct? You need to bleed the air out of your hot water heat zones. Not usually a big job.
@@TheGrumpyPlumber thank you for the reply! Appreciate the time.
What about a squealing noise coming from the tub faucet when there is no water running?
I can’t figure this problem out from where I’m sitting. I suggest replacing the cartridge in the valve and see if the noise goes away.
Thanks
Your anti siphoning valve on the sprinkler control is probably causing the noise. It’s just as easy to replace them.
What about a horn like aound when the water is turned on or when a toilet is flushed. Not every time but every 3 or 4th maybe?
My shower turns off with a loud thud on its own. If i turn the water on more it seems to stay on and is fine. Any thoughts please?
We had a new bathtub and a vanity/sink installed. Whenever the hot water is running and going down the drain, there is loud banging sound once every few seconds or so. What is this due to and how can I fix this?
The first thing I would do is call whoever did the installation to fix this problem. I can’t solve your problem as I’m not there.
Enjoyed the video. I have a problem with bathroom sink. I hear air coming from the drain sounds like if you are blowing into an instrument. Any ideas why.
Yolanda Watkins, if it’s a gurgling sound that means you have a vent problem and the sink drain is not getting air.
Thank you!
Pressure regulator is a Wilkins model 70.
I think the noise is coming from the regulator. I would upgrade the regulator to a 600 Wilkins.
