Great conversation. I moved to Ukraine a decade ago (Ukrainian wife) and displaced twice, in 2014 & 2022, ancestry is the former Yugoslavia, but I grew up 'down under'. Major General Ryan is a "fair dinkum" good bloke. You'll have to ask him what that means. I was fed this video by the algorithm on YT by chance or maybe not, I am a subscriber to retired F-14 Tomcat RIO Ward Carroll's chan on here. Maybe that has something to do with it. I am glad to have discovered this channel and sub'd to it!
Anyway, with the military aid we receive here, and Americans questioning why billions of dollars that get spent on Ukraine, it is very frustrating. As I understand, it is the value of mostly retired equipment we are being sent here, along with some current systems like Patriots or NASAMS etc. But it is essentially the value of "stuff" and it is not new money. Any new money gets spent in the US to replenish hardware stateside with new gear (so the money goes back into the US economy). This was a very important question at the outset of this discussion and irregardless of the intricacies of the spending, Maj. Gen. Ryan makes the ethical & moral point of why the free world should support us here in Ukraine. 👍

At least Australia was not involved in any major wars when u were growing up (🤞)! People here who complain about aid going to Ukraine are in the Trump camp (they just follow each other) & are mostly ignorant about international affairs. Most politicians here support Ukraine but depending on who wins in Nov, that could change. I hope, when/if Trump pulls out of NATO, NATO will teach Russia a lesson they won’t soon forget!

@@AAB463 Yeap! There were some minor deployments, but Vietnam was before my time. Hopefully Trump does not manage to pull America out of NATO, from what I understand both parts of Congress (House & Senate) have to approve that ? I still think either way the Europeans and Canadians can hold the line in NATO, together they far out gun Russia both economically and in the quality of the force structures. For example, our Canadian friends have been with us since 2015 - google "Operation UNIFIER" - IMHO they played a large part in getting the Armes Forces of Ukraine ready for 2022.

@@danielhutchinson6604poor Russia! So mistreated! Rare earth elements in Ukraine couldn’t possibly matter to Putin. If you think living under a dictatorship is so wonderful why aren’t you living in Russia? While imperfect attempts by imperfect Americans don’t always produce desired results, the motivation matters, not the money. Trump is clearly a criminal while Harris is clearly not. If the oligarchy want a criminal, that’s what we will get & the world order will see a brand new level of corruption. We all just have to wait a few more days.

Points that get missed: 1. Why did we not support Ukraine during the first invasion of 2014. 2. Britain, Germany , Italy, Canada, France would not have been able to stop Kiev falling. 3. Since the invasion no European nations have substantially increased defense spending. Germany talked about but little has been spent. The weapons sent, so very little, are not coming out of factories.

It keeps occuring to me that Ukraine could use some more light artillery. This is to help offset the shortages of 155mm by allowing something for shorter range targets. I've heard soldiers say they were using the 155mm at ranges as close as 4 km. That's not an efficient way to build your inventory.

I think the book, as a point of view, finds its pleased reader and nice feedback. still being the very Ukrainian l think that Mr. Zelensky's halt in Kyiv at the war's commence is not the biggest achievement for the excellent war leader, this was his work as a President, so there could have been additional contribution of Him as a military Chief not to lose the southeast as for my positive appraisal. In my opinion, he has done too low in his deterrence and readiness to stop the war break down before getting involved in the war, and i am very unsatisfied to live through this war, and i don't see that you are able to understand the subject of living near russia border forever, for you don't know, how the war could be progressive in terms of territorial claims with time, the war is very personal thing, and you have to overcome even a small war in your life to feel its pace, other way your expertise to share is fruitless.

If you're living through the war in Ukraine then indeed you are experiencing it much more personally and viscerally than we are. Please try to stay safe.

The book is interesting, however it don’t think that it adequately examines the effect of Ukrainians who supported Russia, or those very significant numbers who aren’t interested in fighting, and what that could mean for other western countries to unite diverse communities in their countries should they ever have to mobilise.
