After the recent informational bashing - lies, fraud and disinformation as a mandate in the news from the DT Minions - Americans find it absurd to worry about foreign affairs. Russia & China like this condition. Wars will be eminently more reasonable when viewed from thugs like Putin & Xi. America has just elected its own national liar, felon and thug, who will puff himself up by bending over for Russia and China. This, NO MATTER WHAT DT PROCLAIMS AS TRUTH!

If American and European companies hadn't made fortunes readying the Reich, WW2 might not have happened. Look up how Koch industries alone benefitted Hitler, Stalin (later Reagan, Bush and Trump). Then see Ford, IBM, Standard Oil, General Motors contributions to German war machine. Industrial Companies in France, Switzerland, Norway, Belgium, The Netherlands all knowingly aided Germany's militarily and industrial buildup.

The reason why Eastern European countries bordering Russia wanted to join NATO is specifically due to Russia's aggression. Just look at the recent wars against Georgia, Chechnya, Moldova, Ukraine etc... Literally every former Warsaw Pact country begged to join NATO as soon as they could for good reason. Nato is just his excuse what Putin really wants is the natural gas reserves in Ukraine. Which most happen to be in the Donbas and off the coast of the Black Sea.

As others commenting have noted, other than references indicating Putin’s domestic political situation was being considered from a 2024 pre-election stance, much of this evaluation seemed to be extrordinarily relevant to ongoing geopolitical issues and perspectives. Dr. Fiona Hill should be recognized for her brilliance in evaluating the complex geopolitical landscape as it relates to Putin's short and long term objectives and motivations and ultimately his actions and their impact, both then and now.

The crisis was indeed manufactured, but not by Putin. The West promised at the end of the Cold War that NATO would not expand eastward, and yet that is exactly what happened, before Putin even came to power. Curious how this basic fact is ignored. Ukraine then becomes a NATO country in all but name, armed to the teeth with one of the largest armies in Europe, and Putin is just supposed to be okay with this? What would we say if Russia was funding the training and the equipment of the Mexican Army? What if they argued they were simply guaranteeing Mexican independence with these moves? We would rightly deride the argument as ridiculous. That army would clearly be aimed at us. How is the U.S. support of Ukraine halfway across the world any different? Rules for thee, but not for me?

Russia and Putin have a position on the world stage it doesn’t deserve. We must see the economic, technological and military “power” of Russia in perspective. Russia is indeed a huge country in square km, but only has (a declining) 144 million inhabitants (Mexico 128 million, Japan 123 million, Indonesia 270 million). This is about 30% of USA or Eurozone. The GDP of Russia however is only 4% of the GDP of the Eurozone + USA, this is equal to the GDP of the small countries Belgium + Netherlands + Luxembourg. And less than the GDP of the state of California. Relatively (per capita) the GDP of Russia is very low. Beside that the economy of Russia has signs of a 3th world economy. Half of the income is coming from oil & gas. Based on this, Russia isn’t a world power. And for sure, it isn’t a economic power. This is the reason they can’t build up and maintain a big army. The army they have is far beyond normal proportions in relation to their GDP. This hurts their budgets and prosperity permanently. In this perspective, Russia is a mouse with a huge superiority complex and dangerous megalomaniac dreams. It will lead to a downfall.

Moreover, most of the GDP are services, such as law firms, accounting, consulting, insurance and so on. The example with Belgium/Netherlands/Luxemburg is irrelevant. Can you imagine Belgium under 10,000 sanctions fighting a war against 50 economies and not collapsing? Or can you imagine Luxemburg single-handedly saves its friend Bashar al-Assad from losing a war? Though I agree that Indonesia is a powerful country, but it's neutral for the most part. They are trying to keep status quo and not choose any sides.

The Ukrainian crisis was manufactured in 2014 when the US and EU backed a Neo-nationalist coup in Ukraine.
Instantly followed by the US and NATO FLOODING Ukraine with BILLIONS and BILLIONS in weapons and integrating themselves into the Ukrainian military and intelligence.
ALMOST instantly followed by the Ukrainian military BOMBING the Dombass into submission killing 14,000 Donbass civilians because they voted for independence in the 2014 Donbass status referendum and because NATO wanted to drag Russia into a war.
Which the US also did in Afghanistan hoping to repeat the outcome which led to the collapse of the Soviet Union, mass Russian poverty and the mass privatisation of Russian public assets.

There's a big difference. You refer to Russia and China. They're fundamentally authoritarian regimes with expansionist aims. Constantly talking about themselves in imperial terms and telling us which lands they believe belong to them that they're going to take by force. There's more to it than that obviously. The USA makes no such claims. We aren't trying to annex territory into the USA. Having a US base means security and safety AGAINST Russia or China or North Korea, etc. That's the difference. Russia and China's allies are not democracies. What does that tell you? Meanwhile, the USAs allies consist of the freest, happiest, most democratic nations in the world. Is it any wonder that free, democratic, HAPPY nations would want the USA's help protecting against a nation like Russia who, especially after 2022 has been proven for the 20th time or more that it is aggressive and wants to invade other nations? There are US bases in other nations because those nations' governments wanted them there, not because the USA are there by force or coercion. The USA's bases around the world are reverberations from the Cold War in which free democratic nations wanted security AGAINST the tyranny of the Soviet Union as most of Warsaw Pact Europe had to endure. Ask Romania or Poland or Latvia or Lithuania or Estonia if they'd like a US military base in their country.

As Noam Chomsky points out, it would be like China inviting Mexico to join a military alliance, imagine how that would go down in the White House? But of course we don't have to imagine that, we only have to think back to the Cuban missile crisis that brought us to the brink of nuclear war, and amazingly we're right back now at the brink once again, absolutely insane!

They pulled out because they didn't want to meet the requirements that every other country has to do. They thought they had an exceptional right because of the size of the country. When admission on those grounds were denied they pulled out and attacked Georgia.
Ukraine should have been given art. 5 rights the moment that the Budapest Memorandum was signed in which ALL parties guaranteed the sovereign territory of Ukraine, including Russia. And by which Ukraine gave up the right to possess nuclear weapons. The reasons for not abiding by that memorandum have never occurred.
Furthermore as earlier said ALL parties guaranteed the sovereign rights of Ukrainian territory, which means that the US and UK have every right to intervene with boots on the ground. They have been cautious with exercising that right, but that can change if needed.

Ukraine was already supposed to be protected by GB, USA and Russia when they gave up their nukes. Ukraine is purely a landgrab and has nothing at all to do with Russia's security. Russia is the only one invading and taking over countries.

@@telebubba5527 yes, that appears to be correct, but as far as I can see a series of actions coming from the US also soured the relationship and weren't necessary in my view...'In early 2008, U.S. President George W. Bush vowed full support for admitting Georgia and Ukraine into NATO, to the opposition of Russia. The Russian Government claimed plans to expand NATO to Ukraine and Georgia may negatively affect European security. Likewise, Russians are mostly strongly opposed to any eastward expansion of NATO. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev stated in 2008 that "no country would be happy about a military bloc to which it did not belong approaching its borders". Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin warned that any incorporation of Ukraine into NATO would cause a "deep crisis" in Russia-Ukraine relations and also negatively affect Russia's relations with the West'

@@lauriethompson740 You are only confirming their vile nature and plans not to recognise Ukrainian sovereignty.
Putin himself already in 1999 stated that the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact was a mistake that needed to be corrected. That has been the basis of all of their actions ever since. The approach towards NATO was a fake and was only meant to blow up NATO from within. The 'crisis' was in fact already there from the start and it doesn't matter really that others only confirmed it.
NATO does not expand and it is only a defensive organisation. It has never, ever acted in a negative way towards a. the Soviet Union and b. towards Russia. Putin has always had an imperialistic 'dream' from the start. All former Warsaw Pact, Eastern European countries recognise that. Which is the sole reason for them wanting to belong to NATO. In fact NATO was living on it's last legs and nearing dissolution itself, until Putin invaded NATO for the second time. He is the one responsible for its reinvigoration and for two other countries, who had remained neutral, to join NATO. The argument about having a large military bloc right next to Russia is a void argument, as if they would be able to wipe Ukraine of the face of the earth, they would be the ones creeping up to NATO. Only with ill means.
The arguments you are presenting are mute and don't hold for even one second. They only expose the vile, aggressive nature of Russia and nothing else.

The short of this (and certainly not to take away from the depth and scope of Dr.Hill's analysis which for me begs the need for her and people like her to have their analysis become mandatory and repeat viewing by the wests leadership so that they could repeat it vebatim on demand with a three-dimensional understanding of what she is saying) is simple. Our own internal inablities to properly administer foreign policy successfully is one of if not the greatest momentum-building tools the enemy has at it's diposal...for which they require little if any effort on their behalf to fuel. It is in fact a gift from the west to putin. It is also in fact our in-fighting and our lack of genuine resolve to address what we in the west view as "potential crisis" rather than the genuine and very real CURRENT crisis that has allowed even the current situation with Ukraine to be viewed as singular in its genesis and without tether by not only these administrations but, most importantly in democratic society...the public to whom they administer rather than the multi-point attack that it really is. There is MUCH work to be done and the truncated schedule we face does not favor us...at all.

Most of you understand what the Monroe Doctrine represents, for those that don’t should search for it and you will quickly understand that if any nation that imposes itself militarily in America’s sphere is considered an existential threat to American security and will therefore be dealt with through military action if need be. The Cuba crisis in early 1960’s is a perfect example of this. Even though America had already placed nukes in Turkey, the Soviet Union was not permitted to do the same in Cuba. Putin told western leadership starting in 2008 that nato would not be permitted to set up shop in Ukraine and Georgia for the exact same reason that the Soviet Union was not permitted to set up shop in Cuba. Rather than recognizing Putin’s position and backing away from their plans they double down every time Putin said no. Even the current cia director warned this would likely result in conflict. Any talk that does not address this is disingenuous and is to deflect blame. This conflict could have been avoided as recently as April 2022 but Boris Johnson convinced Ukraine to turn down an agreement for peace and neutrality and instead they chose war. This is fact. You decide if the narrative fits the facts.

      1. Libya was ruled by a megalomaniacal dictator who was routinely testing the waters with aggression. His people rebelled, and we assisted. Simple as that.
      2. Syria is similar. Assad is a murderous dictator like his father before him. We helped certain rebel factions who wanted to fight against Assad and we also of course helped fight against ISIS.
      3. Iraq is an EASY one. Saddam Hussein was a murderous dictator who subscribed to the Baathist fascist party. He invaded Iran, he gassed the Kurds, he murdered politicians, journalists, artists and frankly anyone who spoke out against him or disagreed with him. He jailed those he didn't murder. Then he invaded Kuwait and claimed it was now part of Iraq. On 9/11 when Al Qaeda agents destroyed the World Trade Center in NYC, what did Saddam do? Why he celebrated and made it an Iraqi holiday. That motherfucker had it coming big time and what did many Iraqis do? There are literal videos of people celebrating in the street and coming up to American soldiers to talk and smile and laugh. UNLIKE in Ukraine. Funny isn't it?
Iraq was a clusterfuck but it wasn't what you are pretending it was. Plenty of Iraqis liked American troops and America did in fact create democracy in Iraq. Iraqis are more free now than they ever have been and can vote for their future. Democracy wasn't going to come from Saddam, in case you think so.

Humanity is like a single body, with each nation as an organ. When one organ malfunctions-like the Russian Federation attacking Ukraine-the whole body feels the impact. Ukraine becomes the suffering organ, bearing the brunt of the damage, while the malfunctioning organ disrupts the harmony and balance of the entire system.
Just as a body’s immune system mobilizes to heal and protect its affected parts, the global community must respond. This response may include offering support to Ukraine, isolating the source of harm, and addressing the underlying issues causing the dysfunction. The goal is to restore balance, heal the suffering organ, and reintegrate the malfunctioning organ into the healthy functioning of the whole.
For humanity to thrive, its 'organs' must work together in harmony. Every nation has a role to play, and the health of the global body depends on the collective effort to address conflicts, prevent harm, and build a system where such malfunctions are less likely to occur.
