  • Step by step rebuild of a worm and sector steering box for a B414 steering box, the same box as used on a B275 and late B250. The process is similar for any worm and sector steering box such as 434, 444. 384 and others.

    Thanks a lot for your great repair and rebuild videos. This particular one encouraged me to finally go for a steering box rebuild on my late grandfather’s 1963 B275D which had been grossly out of order for 30 years. Needless to say the tractor feels like new and now actually some more parts have been ordered with the goal of completing a full restoration. Actually in my case the side plate does not have an adjustment bolt but uses shims between the side plate and the housing for adjustment. Many thanks and keep up the good work. Greetings from Iceland.

    Thanks for this video. I've just bought a B2275 (loader and backhoe) with seized steering. I'll attempt a rebuild - only problem is, I've no idea how to get it out. The shaft goes through the fuel tank - which appears to be trapped within the B40-1 front loader frame...I'm sure it'll be fun!

    • @fergu667
      @fergu667 4 роки тому +1

      Possible, but the power steering on these old girls aren't handled in the box like a car or truck, they have a cylinder to assist with manual steering force. You would almost need another parts tractor to change over. Even the hydraulic pump is different, has an extra line for power steering model.

    I have a international 444 with Water in the steering box (steering wont turn Right when the temperature goes below freezing). Do I have to remove the steering box from the tractor to clean out the water and how do I get the water out? the only access I see is through the plate held on by a couple screws on the right side of the box. The oil that goes back into it, would that be 80W90?

    • @CanadianRedneck15
      @CanadianRedneck15  5 років тому +1

      Unfortunately you will have to remove the steering box to clean it out. Your best bet is to take the plate off the side so you can drain the box and then clean it out with a rag/paper towel or what have you. It takes 80W90 gear oil.

    Hi David. Thank you for all of your helpful videos! (Especially everything for IH B414’s) I can’t find any other way to communicate with you, so I’ll try this. I’m bringing my old 1962 IH B414 diesel back to life, after the tractor unfortunately sat for about 10 years. I successfully rebuilt the CAV pump, thanks to Lance down in Australia, and she’s running amazingly well. • @CanadianRedneck15

      That is most likely the valve in the PS cylinder, it may be stick since it sat for so long. There should be a grease zerk on the bottom of the cylinder in the area of the valve, grease it well and try it for a bit to see if it will come out of it.

      @CanadianRedneck15  6 років тому +1

      That's the problem, you stopped too soon, you have to work through blue in the face to purple. LOL, sorry, I couldn't help myself.
      The pitman ram is on a tapered spline and can be quite tough to dislodge. I usually use an air hammer but a good heavy ball-peen hammer will do the trick. Try alternating a few blows against the side of the pitman arm to shock it loose and a few against the back side (possibly with a heavy punch) to drive it free.

      Jack up the front end and see if the wheels will turn then, could be bearings in the steering box, spindle thrust bearings or could be that the spindles are dry and tight in the bushings in the end of the axles.

    my 414 does not have a jam screw or a hole to put one so I can not adjust the slack, any idea why.

      Early ones had a rubbing block on the pitman shaft and managed slack by shims between the cover and the case. Thanks for watching!

    Would a 434 have the same kit? Thanks

      Unfortunately no, the 434 used 1/4" individual balls, no cage. Thanks for watching!

      @@CanadianRedneck15 okay thanks for your help. I’m finding it really difficult to source a kit for it. I would like to say your videos are really helpful and you helped me a lot in restoring my ih 454. Keep up the good work

    Hi Looks like International should of designed the steering box on a Fordson Major they are just ignorant compared to this one. when they designed theirs the top and bottom bearings are just loose balls with no cage to hold them together. you kinda use the thickest nastiest grease and hope they all stay in while you put it together. My buddy was helping me with one. He said I'd rather have my mother in law stay for a month than do this it would be a less painful experience L.O.L

      Maybe Fordson designed the IH 434 box, they have loose balls as well. LOL Thanks for watching!

      You can check with your local Sparex dealer, but they have been out of stock for about a year now the last I checked.

      @@richardowen2555 I'm pretty sure the worm gear and shaft are one piece so that would definitely be a problem. Early models didn't have the set screw on the side, they used shims under the side cover to set the clearance between the sector shaft and the worm gear. Thanks for watching!
