Here in Alberta its illegal to hunt the wild rabbits that inhabit the city, as a result we have a lot of wild predators that live right within the city limits. Bobcats, coyotes, and raptor birds are very common to see. In order to keep the Iberian lynx thriving, you need to keep the rabbit population stable.
That's exactly the problem mate. Iberian lynx were actually doing quite well until a particular person decided to introduce myxomatosis into his private estate im France, causing devastating losses in rabbit populations across Europe.

From scientists working on captivity reproduction and restoring their habitat, to the administration building elevated passes trhough roads, to normal people driving slowly on their vehicles and paying their taxes proudly to conquer one of the most difficult tasks my country has ever done. It was decades of full commitement and its not even done yet.

The one who is currently being considered for reintroduction in Scotland is the Eurasian lynx which is much bigger and can take on deer. But I totally agree with the sentiment of your comment, they should definitely be reintroduced.
