Blimy - I was there, was friendly with a guy that DJed at the club and had hung out there one day not knowing that the band were on. At the tender age of 17 it blew my mind.
Hey, that's my recording! Around 1980-1985 I got on good terms with the sound engineers touring with the band, I vaguely recall one of them being called Dill Dowling but I could be hopelessly wrong. Anyway I used to bring cassette tapes along with me and he'd stick them in the deck that was part of the mixing desk set up. To my frustration though he'd often either not have time or would forget to start the tape running or turn it over at the end of side one, hence this show is incomplete! I must have sent a copy to someone donkeys years ago when I traded tapes with people. I never liked Ginger Baker's spell with Hawkwind, I didn't think his drumming style worked at all well, but it brings back pleasant memories of my youth to hear this again.
I hope you don't mind it being put on UA-cam! ;) It is a rather good recording. I thought that an hour was a bit short for a concert - at least the engineer did most of it for you. Many Hawkwind fans didn't like Baker's drumming style (or personality) but I thought he sounded fantastic on the album Levitation and would have loved to see them live at that time. His drum solos are boring, however. He was never going to stay with them long.
Of course I don't mind!!! I love that you're still releasing new stuff occasionally, just surprised that more Hawkwind fans don't seem to know about your channel.
Hiya. Well, for me Simon King, Martin Griffin, Danny Thompson and yes for sure Richard Chadwick are all better than Ginger Baker because for me they all were / are ‘Hawkwind’ whereas Ginger Baker was only ever Ginger Baker - a stunning drummer, but not part of the ships crew…@@volpeverde6441
@justinmorgan2126 why have I never heard Simon King....? I have 4 bootlegs with him on....SOUNDS called him the 'definitive rock drummer' in 1985.... but I prefer GINGER....

Keith Hayle's singing is dreadful here. Brock adds some of his trademark sequencers in an attempt to drown him out :-D Baker's drumming on tracks like Space Chase and World of Tiers is brilliant, but on others he is too busy for the Orkwind chugging style. A nice set, but true greatness was just around the corner with those 3 RCA albums...

Keith Hayle wasn't a great singer. Ginger baker was a great drummer but not always the best fit for Hawkwind.
