This was such a good episode. Very rare if it's time and well written. Good acting, also. Just happened to watch it again after years the other day. Great series.
I loved this show and remember seeing this episode. I was in high school. The next day, it was the talk of the school. Quite a controversial subject in its day. Especially casting the very beautiful Ms. Nettleton to play the part.
Martin Sheen twice in 1971 and 1972... though the first of those sympathetic characters got murdered by his boyfriend, who was less sympathetic. Sheen also played the homophobic dad in the groundbreaking coming-out TV movie CONSENTING ADULT in the 1980s. And of course, now he's on GRACE AND FRANKIE.
@Joni O'Connor It was the edgiest show in television during its run. Several episodes were pre-empted by rural American stations due to uproar over homosexual themes, child abuse, sexual abuse, and gender dysphoria. My grandma would just about knock the TV off the stand if she saw this show on in her house.
@@carbine090909 Found The Dick Cavett Show channel on you tube has a twelve minute clip starting when Everett comes to be seated. After 6:30 m:s, the reference begins. Watching the whole things is better though, which shows that Lily is not "strident."
I remember this scene as a kid and had to ask my mother what a lesbian was. This episode was handled with dignity at a time when if there was a gay character on TV they were usually the butt of jokes.
Lois Nettleton had a special unique quality about her. I always enjoyed her performances.
Superb actress! I first remember her from "The Midnight Sun" episode of the Twilight Zone. A Beautiful lady.
Wow this was ahead of its time !
Not so much. There is nothing new under the sun.
@@jebsmith323 no, but for 70s American TV that was pretty amazing ❤️
Lois Nettleton was a Superb Actress!
Lois Nettleton also played a lesbian in the " Isn't it Romantic" episode of Golden Girls, where she falls in live with Rose (Betty White).
She was probably the only actress willing to play the part, lol.

So ahead of the times. Great acting.
Cutting edge series. You find that many series in the 70s deal with taboo topics , yes even the Waltons. Ms. Nettleton was a fantastic actress.
Go see her in an episode of the Fugitive - stunning beauty, undeniable sexiness, and excellent acting.
Lois Nettleton was fantastic.
I remember seeing this episode when it originally aired.
She also starred in a Mary Tyler Moore episode as Lou Grant’s boss who fell in love with him.
Think she was also on All That Glitters, a Norman Lear production that had a role reversal world - all women were dominating in business.
I’m impressed. Who else played multiple sympathetic homosexual characters in the 70s and 80s?

What a very very beautiful and exciting looking lady was always beautiful woman One of my 1st crushes Rip Miss Nettleton 🙏 God Bless You 🙏
Vaguely remembered watching this as a kid, especially b/c they kissed.
She played a lesbian character again on The Golden Girls
She must have enjoyed playing lesbian roles. She played this role then, years later, she played a lesbian on Golden Girls.
Pretty impressive for 1973.
Chad Everett ❤️
The Brad Pitt of the Boomer generation.
The male Dr was quite handsome. :).
Is there any way to watch the full episode?
That whole season was released on DVD but doesn't seem to be on any streaming service.
Miss Chad everett
Chad Everett was certainly a handsome man - but Lily Tomlin didn't think so.
Why didn't Lily Tomlin think Chad Everett was handsome (he reminds me a little of Brad Pitt!)?
@@carbine090909Think they had an interaction as guests on a talk show?
@@Ma_Ba thanks!

WOW - I have always heard about this show ... crazy ahead of its time

The conversation indicated she was Bisexual, I believe
Lois Nettleton was hot.
the only thing i agree with here !!!
dr gannon was a homophobe
his choice...free country....or isn't it?
Me too. It's only natural for heterosexual men to be disgusted by homosexuals.
People with short left index fingers date women . Just look at the backs of your hands.
LOL
