Clip: 1986, Stereotyped "killer lesbians" on HUNTER
TODAY IN QUEER TV HISTORY
HUNTER: "From San Francisco with Love" - 11/15/1986, NBC
Would you believe... still MORE homicidal lesbians on 1960s-80s American TV? You rarely saw lesbians or bi women as comedy roles on television back then, and when you did, it was usually a woman whose partner had just died. But boy, did queer women characters show up as killers or corpses, often killed by other lesbians! In this case, a very dysfunctional couple (played by Philece Sampler and Laura Johnson) have bumped off one partner's husband and stepson for an inheritance.
This episode was sort of the "last hurrah" for pigeonholing queer women so narrowly on US TV dramas.

But not too edgy: they were ...

TODAY IN QUEER TV HISTORY CBS EVENING NEWS - 4/1/1982, CBS Film historian Vito Russo is one of the interviewees in this report on the growing number of films dealing with homosexuality ("a controversial topic," Dan Rather reminds us in the introduction). At the height of Reagan-era conservatism, CBS felt the need to take a pro-versus-con approach to the story, preface it with something borderin...

TODAY IN QUEER(ISH) TV HISTORY THE DuPONT SHOW OF THE MONTH: "Treasure Island" - 3/5/1960, CBS On early-1960s TV, back when the censorship rules banned explicitly queer characters, the line between "camp" and "gay" was awfully thin. Here's the late, great George Rose giving a campy portrayal of castaway pirate Ben Gunn in a TV adaptation of the classic novel. It sounds like he's channeling Kenn...

TODAY IN QUEER TV HISTORY MARCUS WELBY, M.D.: "The Other Martin Loring" - 2/20/1973, ABC Back when most gay and bi characters on primetime dramas were violent criminals or mentally ill, this popular medical series did an episode where homosexuality was the disease of the week. Old talk shows give us a window into earlier eras. This JENNY JONES SHOW clip from 1992 reminds us of the stigma that often still surrounded being gay or having a gay kid even in the early 1990s, decades into the activist struggle to destigmatize same-sex desire.

Happy birthday to Meredith Baxter, who was a regular on the TV series FAMILY and BRIDGET LOVES BERNIE and FAMILY TIES. Baxter came out publicly as a lesbian in 2009. This fairly homophobic broadcast (however well meaning it might have been) was one of the first TV talk show segments to deal with any kind of gay issues, even negatively, and so it was a kind of progress. And at the time, "It should be seen as a disease, not a crime" was a passably progressive attitude, even, surprisingly, in the view of certain gay activists of that era. A globby, highly comp...

TODAY IN QUEER TV HISTORY BROTHERS AND SISTERS: "Moral Hazard" - 5/4/2008, ABC In the 2000s, when US broadcast TV tended to keep queer characters single, or else filmed their stories in apologetic, distancing ways, this excellent ensemble family drama told the love story of regular characters Kevin and Scotty in the same matter-of-fact way it handled its heterosexual couples' stories. Ignorance is Bliss......
55 years later, and we are still stuck in stupid over homosexuality.
Coming out of the closet of 70s television was completely ignored
Progressive
Does anyone remember Philip Carey on The Rifleman?
Does anyone remember Philip Carey on The Rifleman?
Like all haters, Virginia Graham ultimately falls back on the old "I have homosexual friends" line. No, you don't have homosexual friends. If you deny their right to live how they are most happy, you are not their friend.
"I'm not an expert on flowers" ahaha
Beverly pulling off the wig was funnier than when Sammy Davis Jr kissed Archie on the cheek.
FUNNY THAT VIRGINIA GRAHAMS SON TURNED OUT TO BE HOMOSEXUAL. HOW DID SHE FEEL THEN SHE NEVER TALKED ABOUT IT
AND JUNE HAS FULL FACULTIES AT 99 TO. BILLY MUMY HAS SAID SHES. BRIGHTER THAN HE IS RIGHT NOW.
I was 9 when this show aired, I remember this episode because my parents belly laughed so hard while watching it. I didn't fully get the topic or the humor at the time......when I watch it now, it's even funnier. What a great show this was and great writers too !
So sad
I watched this episode when I was 10 years old that year when this guy announced he was gay I thought it meant happy also but my older brother explained it to me I was so shocked because at 10 years old my older brother was 19 I had no clue gay meant ppl moving ppl of the same s*x but I was grateful it was explained to me afterwards I just was ok no big deal🤷
I miss Dr. Joe Gannon and the Medical Center episodes.
Can't blame a girl for trying.
Homophobes are so desingenuous. How are you gonna justify your own bigotry by saying homosexuality is unnatural, and then when proved wrong you dont even blink while saying "well we have intelligence and can choose to deny our nature". I could never live in that era bc i cannot handle stupid ppl as well as this man!
In 1970 homosexuality, as it was called then, was viewed differently. Virginia Graham wasn't the only person who saw it as sinful or wrong.
The Woman: I'm thirsty... would you like a drink? Janette: 😏
The fact that Graham likens gayness to drug addiction and yet is openly fond of her gay friends underlies the untenable contradictions of the old days, and why the doors had to open.
CLASSIC CHARACTER. ❤
All this time I never knew that this strong, athletic, man was Philip Carey. I will forever remember Carey as Simon Battle on The Rifleman.
It figures that the straight guy would try and make it all about him.
It is first episode, please? And how part?
Wow, she stood up for us all those decades ago, great love for this lady 👏👏
Over 40 years of operations and they're still terrible at it no thanks
He looks lovely.
Martin short was so young then lol
June Lockhart is the voice of reason back in 1970 and of the present.
God bless June
9:30 That music is soooo 90s Super Nintendo
Across 3 appearances, The only time we say Beverly dressed as a man is in his final scene of his final appearance. I wonder if that means that Beverly's death following that scene was foreshadowed.
Thank you, June! In 1970, June's was not the obvious statement to make on national television.
Why are you insisting on calling them "queer". I can't see that the protestors are. I hate that word and will never accept it as anything but a slur.
Would've been better than those crap men she chose
❤😂🎉👌🙏🌈🎊Rest in Paradise All.
Yes I miss both soaps
My coming out to my parents was very very, err! different. I was 16yr old (been out to some school friends since I was 12), living in the North (Carlisle) and it was 1978. My mum cried and went directly to my father who blamed my mother for letting me watch ‘The Naked Civil Servant’ a couple of yrs earlier, no really! I was taken to the ‘lovely’ family GP to “get fixed” and was almost immediately scheduled for NHS ‘Conversion Therapy’. I wasn’t asked what I wanted as the Dr kept referring to me as a pervert and a humiliation. So, about 2 months before I was sectioned in a psychiatric unit I ran away to London and it took years to be able to have a relationship with my family. Unfortunately, my father never really accepted me and referred to the next 40yrs as “a phase” and I’d get my self sorted when I met the right woman! So, this little tableau for me was a fantasy of how I always wanted my coming out to be. Many of my friends had the experience as indicated in this clip from Agony Again, but still today a lot don’t and get put out of the family home. It was the original series featuring the same character, Jame Lucas that helped get me through those dark days of the late 1970’s. In the original series ‘Agony’ it was a gay couple that we were introduced to, the first regular gay men I think I had ever seen on British TV and not the usual camp, effeminate queen types who were there to be laughed at, rather than laugh with. Dame Lipman did help me with accepting my identity when nearly everything else that was targets towards the LGBTQ community told us to be ashamed. The first thing my mum said to me after she stopped crying was that I “was going to be very very lonely if I continued on this path of being a pervert” Those that have commented on there opinion of Maureen Lipman somehow missed the point of this clip!
Ahh, another day of people complaining about politics, religion, and sex.. Remember you don't have to attend every argument that you're invited to.

Nothing wrong with being transgender. But you can’t play women’s sports, only the “open” division (aka, “men’s” sports).
Yeah, well Tennis is coed sport, meaning it is a sport where People of the opposite biological s xes(Hermaphrodite, Inters x, Female & Male) compete against each other anyway, so that's cool. If you watch Tennis videos, people who identify as women and men compete against each other all of the time.
Just love Barney Miller. Really shook up stereotypes amd in context of the ultra ‘bro’ setting of a police precinct.
Sorry, just don't see it. Gay people have a habit of trying to find gay things in the most innocuous of places. Is it the lisp? Lots of people lisp it is just a cheap hacky joke.
Jon who?
Rare groundbreaking
Is it just me or does Paul seem like a douche?
Sorry, but I get no inclination from this clip that Whit's character is gay. Plus, I heard no dialog about him wearing perfume behind his ears in this footage.
The irony of my first man crush being Ryan Phillipe after watching Cruel Intentions as a preteen. The pool scene exposing his butt, I knew that’s what I liked lol.
Now what happened to Sonny and Will I hope that they get back together dudes
