ELLEN: "Give Me Equity or Give Me Death" - 9/18/1996, ABC
Amid widespread public rumors about the sexuality of Ellen DeGeneres and her sitcom character, this Season 4 premiere launched a months-long series of jokey hints that the character might be gay. The writers wanted to do more, but ABC/Disney executives kept delaying and delaying permission to film an episode in which Ellen Morgan acknowledges she's a lesbian.
We also see a clip here from the 9/25/1996 episode of THE ROSIE O'DONNELL SHOW, a syndicated daytime celebrity talk show hosted by not-yet-out-of-the-closet lesbian comedian Rosie O'Donnell.

This fairly homophobic broadcast (however well meaning it might have been) was one of the first TV talk show segments to deal with any kind of gay issues, even negatively, and so it was a kind of progress. And at the time, "It should be seen as a disease, not a crime" was a passably progressive attitude, even, surprisingly, in the view of certain gay activists of that era. A globby, highly comp...

WOW - I have always heard about this show ... crazy ahead of its time
Is that Nathan Fillion?
No, Fillon took over the role of Joey a few years later.
The panel mentions wanting to see gays in movies or commercials, just like anybody else. I'm sure they knew they were fighting a battle that would take a long time to win. But I wonder if they realized it was going to take FIFTY years before that would finally happen?

Lots of attention is being paid to Paar in these comments but the real focus should be on these early heroes of the gay rights movement. They are brave and (surprisingly, for the times) 100% confident in their sense of self and their right to power. Thank you!
Paar was just ignorant like the rest of America
So Ryan was always cute and had a passion to push himself in any role he took. Does anyone know how this story ended, in just a summary I guess
This was the start of a plot that lasted a few months. Eventually pretty much everyone was supportive except Billy's father, who was kind of an asshole anyway.
@@stevencapsuto873 This was the start of a plot that lasted a few months. Eventually pretty much everyone was supportive except Billy's father, who was kind of an asshole anyway. But this story sounds pretty positive
the most straight looking gay ever
Does anyone know who the guests are? The one I could figure out is the bald gentleman with the mustache - Arnie Kantrowitz. He was alive when this clip was posted, but passed away January 21, 2022 at the age of 81 due to complications from COVID. According to Wikipedia, ”He came out as gay in 1970. He was an early secretary and later vice-president of the pioneering New York City group Gay Activists Alliance. In the early 1970s, he was one of the first openly gay individuals to appear on popular radio and television shows, including those of Jack Paar, Geraldo Rivera, Bill Boggs and Sally Jesse Raphael. He also appeared in several documentary films, including ”After Stonewall“ (1999), ”Positive“ (1990), ”Gay Sex in the 70s“ (2005), and ”Vito“ (2011). He was also interviewed about gay liberation and the AIDS epidemic. Kantrowitz's autobiography ”Under the Rainbow“ was published in 1977 and reprinted in 1978; a new edition appeared in 1996. It was one of the first autobiographies by a gay rights activist.“ en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnie_Kantrowitz
The guests are Nathalie Rockhill, Arnie Kantrowitz (as you said), and Bruce Voeller, from the Gay Activists Alliance of New York. Later that year, in October 1973, Voeller and Rockhill would become two of the cofounders of the National Gay Task Force (now the National LGBTQ Task Force). I think Kantrowitz was an early NGTF board member.
I remember watching this and thinking the gay character was the devil....40 years later...I realized .... there's millions of devils..... lol😅😅😅😅😅😅
Hey Jack, shut up and let your guests answer a question.
Started off so innocently in 1973 and look at the country today in 2024! Completely engulfed in sodomy all day every day in every institution! Madness!
He interrupts his guests.
پسران خوشکل وزیبایی هستند امیدوارم همیشه موفق باشید
Sorry but that was the state of our culture in the 70’s. Parr was actually trying to stop the early extremist LGBTQ campaign from going too far and losing straight allies. He and millions of others were afraid the important message would be rejected at this early point in the movement. Very much like “defund the police” has severely hurt the democrat party today.
It's kind of you to want to think the best of people, but nah... Paar had many admirable traits but on this subject, he was a bigot. He devoted a whole chapter in his memoir to raging against communists and homosexuals and drawing parallels between the two, and on his show loved to make "fairy jokes" and say that tolerating the existence of homosexuals behind the scenes was going to destroy show business.
@@stevencapsuto873 , wow. Have to say I didn’t know any of that. A lot of speculation that he was secretly gay so maybe that explains it.
Wow. That was an uncredited Jamie Harrold (from Too Wong Foo…, Erin Brochovich) as the jerky bully guy!!!
Para is as much a sinful person as anyone else might be. Trying to appear more holy than thou is not working for him here.
Tolerance rather than indulgence perhaps?
You tolerate a toothache. You indulge an annoying relative. The goal here in neither toleration nor indulgence, both of which refer only to negative things. The goal is acceptance. Who wants to just be "tolerated"?
@@stevencapsuto873 The goal may have been acceptance at one point....back in the 60s and 70s perhaps....nowadays it seems to be indulgence....'traditional society' is being expected to embrace so much more than acceptance of 'discreet' homosexuality....
@@michaelpowell6805 If you're expecting us to be "discreet" (hidden, ashamed) in ways that heterosexuals are not, then that's not acceptance of LGB people; that's grudging toleration, and barely even that.
@@stevencapsuto873 Maybe modest would have been a better term....and I extend that to heterosexuals also.... public handholding is one thing....but heavy petting is surely another....

This was a great segment. Ahead of its time in a sense. The Joey character was done perfectly. Frustrated because he wishes Billy wouldn't have had to hide it from him or be ashamed. Billy (in this time) had every right to be guarded. Joey is the type of friend everyone wishes they had.
I love this here.
Given the time period, Paar sounds positively liberal. Fifty years... some change takes generations 😢
The only reason Paar invited these activists to appear on the show was that he was under pressure to give airtime to an opposing point of view after years of spouting homophobic bile in print and on the air. (His autobiography even devoted an entire chapter to raging against "fairies and communists.") By the late 1960s and early 1970s, there were already a few talk show hosts who were absolutely progressive on this subject, notably Phil Donahue. And even as early as the 1950s, there were talk show hosts like Fannie Hurst who were 100% allies and supported the destigmatization of same-sex desire, the decriminalization of homosexuality, and an end to job discrimination. Hurst was quite the pioneer in treating LGB people as the experts on our own lives, rather than inviting ostensibly straight "experts" (psychologists, psychiatrists, clergy, vice-squad police, etc.) to talk about us disparagingly in the third person.
they don't cast teens this good at acting anymore
This was during a time when homosexuality was classified as a mental illness in the DSM. This is a well-documented misclassification of normal human sexuality. This wasn't just changed because of “wokeness.” if you disagree with this, I don't care and think you are an ignorant asshole
Amazing.
Believing cosmetic surgery to mutilate your genitals can actually turn a man into a woman is like believing getting an Afro and a suntan can turn a White guy into a Black guy, We're all entitled to own personal religious beliefs by the U.S, Constitution but none of us have the right to force anybody to agree with the religious beliefs of somebody else which is exactly what the "LGBT Community" is. It's a religion.
I wanted to see how to episode ends
It's a soap opera, so the plot wasn't resolved in this episode (which was just the start of the story). Billy's friends and mom accepted him. His father didn't and generally became verbally and emotionally abusive (creating a crisis in the parents' marriage). And there were subplots about the impact of homophobia on gay teens. Billy's story intersected pretty much every plot on the series during the months the character was on the show. And he was given a pretty happy ending.
Could anybody tell me the name of the actor who plays Joey? He looks so familiar, I know I've seen him in stuff when he was older.
Chris McKenna
