It would've been nice if Dick C had taken a commercial break to see if Lily Tomlin was OK. They essentially just ignored her and continued with the interview.
He was pretty brave (or brazen) to make a dig at Lily's unknown (at the time) lesbianism saying his wife is the type of woman who doesn't want to be owned by another woman.
She was out in the 70s. She’s been with her now wife, Jane, since 1971. This intevrriew is 1972. I don’t think she was publicly out until a few years after this. But I would assume he and others in the industry probably knew that about her and that’s why he did that dig. Men like him don’t like women like her. I grew up around a lot of men like him (fundamental baptist- think Duggar family type) and any woman that presented in any masculine way, was deemed useless. So a woman wearing pants, not being girly, not complying or being submissive, etc. kinda an inside thing to assume they aren’t straight or that they need some “conversion”
At that time he was like Dick Van Dyke, a serious functioning alcoholic, he stopped completely in later years, so, some really stupid remarks there, but he regularly wrote poetry for his wife and they renewed their marriage vows several times.
You said it! The best host of all time. I just made a birthday IG post for him. I have his biography. What a guy. And still with us! Plus acting roles in things like Murphy Brown and Beetlejuice! Love Cavett immensely. Such important programming.
I don't know as this is the 1st clip I've seen. Was it always this bad? We didn't get this show in England, probably most of us still didn't have a telly.
He was being a jerk. Snide sexism and homophobia. But, it was par for the course at this point in history. He read the poem to make himself seem ok. I have read he was an alcoholic so perhaps that brought out the worst in him.
Nah man, no one needs to put up with such a stupid comment, women are so often the butt of awful jokes by men and I think her walking out sent a clear message that that was not ok. If she didn't, it would've been swept under the rug
How do you know that he wasn´t serious? Many men are serious about owning their wife. And it´s funny how you as a man think that she walked off a bit easily. When the reality is that she walked off because of a misogynistic comment that is offensive and violent to half of the people in the world, while men keeps being offended and hysterical about not getting their way and that they have to accept that women are humans too with equal rights.
By just standing up and saying "I'm leaving", she gave a huge messsage; Even Dick got surprised: If she wouldn't have done that, he would've made the non-human guest feel important
"Gee that was a disturbing thing to do. I'm sorry SHE did that." Amazing to see how men have truly perfected the art of gaslighting through the ages 🤌✨️
He seems a weird guy altogether. Quite possibly his wife was just as weird, though. (I used to have a high school gym teacher with a haircut and build like that. @@mikeelek9713 Sweetie, I know who Chad was, he's a forgotten ham has been who had very little talent at the time. I think he thought he could coast on his looks, as talent was scant.

If he didn’t like his voice at least reasonably well, he would have made a pretty poor talk-show host. In fact, I can’t think of a better talk-show host. He was witty, literate, informed, gracious, diplomatic, and always entertaining.
Whether or not what Chad said was right or wrong, Lily walking out right after was pure virtue signaling. There was no reason for that other than to show everyone how she "felt" about that statement. Happens all the time these days. It only served to disrupt the show and make her look foolish.
Lily Tomlin isn’t a good comedian? There are some targets that aren’t worth deigning to satirize, and this is obviously one. There was no good reason for Lily Tomlin to waste her time suffering through the end of this boorish interview. (The “poem” was excruciatingly awful, by the way.)
What we're observing here is the rare thin-skinned comedian who can't recognize a joke. Comedians are among the best ad-libbers on the planet. Walking off in a huff is the best Lily could come up with?!?! I'm more saddened by that than anything Chad Everett said.
I don’t see a joke here either. Lily Tomlin is a brilliant comedian. As far as I can make out, this non-Chad person is not any sort of a comedian at all. Who is likely to be the better judge of comedy?

No he acted like a misogynistic clown who couldn’t even stand up with his comment of owning his animal (wife) and backed it down and said “oh we both own each other” but again, he referred to her as an animal he owned. Anyone who stands by that is a clown
@@westbatman66 um no. There is no legally owning anyone. A person does not own their spouse, not in the eyes of the law or any moral point. You just can bring yourself to admit what he said was sexist. So you make yourself look foolish, saying “well in the eyes of the law…”
