Tommy Padfield Yeah we all want Shouts and then we tell the plot to fuck off. But then I eventually go get Dragonbane when I hit 30 and suddenly get amnesia again. Skyrim is almost 6 years old and I still haven't beat it
In Prototype, the Alex Mercer you play as and the Alex Mercer that released the virus are completely different people. The protagonist never lost his memory, he just acquired bits and pieces of memories from the people he ate and stole faces from, and got confused. The sentient virus that calls itself Alex is a better person than the original human Alex ever was... at least until the sequel undid all his character development for no reason.
Prototype spoilers, just saying Should Alex Mercers case really be considered amnesia? He died in penn station and what we've been playing as is a recreation of him that is a sentient virus, searching for memories that aren't really it's own. By the end of the game it acknowledges it was never really alex mercer, but went on to take the identity. So, isn't it kind of fake memory loss? It never had the memories, it just believed there were gaps that it needed to fill
zeus (yes that is its code name (yes it is known as it)) tells itself at the end of the game that it was Alex mercer and in prototype 2 everyone calls him Alex mercer. also I guess the other people that you consume have amnesia for a second before you brutal and absolutely kill then and take their minds.
This is what I was going to say. Even if Zeus (if that's actually what it's called, cuz I've totally forgotten XD ) at the end says , 'I'm Mercer', it's not actually Alex Mercer, no more than identical twins are their twin. Alex never lost his memories, he died, Zeus is creating and rebuilding them after consuming Alex. So I really don't think it should count, especially with how many other games are out there that have done this that they could have chosen from.
I always interpreted Prototype as in Alex Mercer died when he released the virus and the virus absorbed him as its first victim and the lack of other memories to fall back on made the virus assume it was Alex Mercer.
You are exactly right my friend. You are never Alex. You are the Virus. A clump of biomass that takes the outside appearance of people. Clouded by memories of the body you were born in. Food for though, technically you don't need to look human. You could be a dog, an octopus, a 6 headed hydra... Not having bones and vital organs has it's advantages.
Yeah it's kinda spelled out at the end that you were never Alex Mercer. Not sure how they interpreted it as Alex losing his memories when Alex died that day. Even the cutscene they show in the video has the virus referring to Alex in the third person clearly making them two different beings.
And the first BioShock? Protagonist Jack, son of Andrew Ryan, goes for nearly the entire game being oblivious to his past, as well as his actions which got him to Rapture in the first place. Would you kindly include this example for a commenters edition?
Planescape: Torment fits perfectly in this list too. I mean, forgetting your inmortal life because a crime you commited was so foul it may be causing the destruction of the whole plane of existance? Try telling that to your shrink
As far as I can tell Planescape: Torment was never brought to the Xbox and this channel is Xbox only Outside Xtra is the one they do that isn't just games on the Xbox
Dude, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is for PC only. And they have done lists with other platforms exclusives, like The last of Us for PS, and classic consoles games like Final Fight
Or the last guardian? Or Uncharted? And in one of their older videos they did one comprised entirely of 90s PC adventure games, if you want to shake it up a bit.
Caitlin RC well I imagine I wouldn't wanna skip exams if I were a video game character, I'd get an A+ just for mashing a few buttons at the right time! And I'd save before every exam too. Eat that, school
Silent Hill 2 tells you at the very beginning that James killed Mary. Its in the first distorted radio message you receive. When you first play the game you dont even notice it, but once you know what happened and listen to the message again you can clearly hear her ask James why he killed her. The game was brilliant at using the quirks of human psychology to hide what is right in front of the players face the entire time.
Yeah, you spend the whole time getting attached to the guy and coming to empathize with his seemingly hopeless quest, and then you find out _why_ it's so hopeless and you're forced to reexamine everything you thought you understood about him.
SPOILER ALERT: in the witcher series, geralt died, then got amnesiac, then hooked up with his beloved yennefers best friend,Triss.if that wasnt enough,he used his amnesia to explain his dreadful actions to yennefer! What a douche!
Technically, Alex Mercer doesn't have amnesia. Alex died, was consumed by the virus, and the virus developed a sentience based on the few memories it absorbed from Alex.
*THANK YOU!* Why does everyone seem to struggle with this? Alex dies in the very beginning of the game. You are never Alex. You, the player are the Virus. Clouded by memories of Alex.
The Avatar from Fire Emblem Awakening. They're supposed to be a Vessel for an evil God that was supposed to bring about the world, but they forgot it all and woke up in the middle of a field. And here I thought my hangover was bad
There is actually a reason for your amnesia though - your evil future self tried to unite the two of you somehow so you could be under their control I guess and you couldn't sustain it and it promptly wiped your brain. ...I didn't say it was a _good_ explanation.
No mention of Robin/the Avatar from Fire Emblem: Awakening? You wake up face down in the middle of a wheat field, wearing an sweet-ass coat, with no memory of who you are or where you came from. Then you faff about as a war strategist for two or three years until you find that that you were born to become the physical embodiment of an omnicidal dragon god. #justFireEmblemThings?
👏👏👏👏 Now wouldn't that just be convenient to remember, but nope. Just a bum in a coat who woke up in a wheat field. Just seems like the result of a really bad night of drinking and waking up the next day.

My favorite is in the Nintendo DS game Ghost Trick, you spend the whole game as a ghost saving lives and solving puzzles while trying to find out who you were in life. The you find out you are actually the bad guy...'s cat. Yes you have amnesia so bad you forget your own species, though being a cat explains your actions in on character's flashback, cats are jerks.
Man Bioshock is confusing as we are seeing 123th attempt (as Luteces heads or tails board suggests) at saving Elizabeth, so presumably it's the 123th Booker Dewitt and all of these Bookers sold their daughters, branded themselves, drunk to forget and then attempted to rescue her? Also when you die Booker from another dimension is pulled into the fray so there are even more of them, yet still they retain the same memories? Damn my head hurts when I think to much about that game. EDIT: It was 123rd toss not 13th (forgot about the back of the chalkboard).

Ahh forgot about that. You enter as 122nd Booker (as the entry code indicates), but during the coin flip you are the 123rd Booker (Lutece's chalkboard) as presumably 122nd one died during baptism.
What about Prey? Morgan did some pretty evil stuff like His/Her morally questionable experiments and is part of the reason that that the typhon broke containment.
The amnesia is incidental to the morally questionable stuff, and also... well if you've played the game then you know there's a lot of separation between the PC and the Morgan of before.
I had an idea about DeWitt and Comstock being versions of the same man, but that ending still surprised me. The entire ending sequence from the time the tower is destroyed is my favorite bit of the game. I know Infinite gets hate from fans of the first (and second) game, but I love it.
@@ledumpsterfire6474 Exactly. For me it's easy enough to disconnect it from the others since the time period is so different. That and I've never completed BioShock or BioShock 2. I've played a bit of each, but they didn't click for me.

marcianito 100% real ayy The Courier has a backstory. The player just doesn't know it. That doesn't mean The Courier forgets their own life, necessarily. You're forgetting that they had a job before the events of the game. Surely being a courier for the Mojave Express wouldn't have left much opportunity to explore. Of course, once the Powder Gangers invaded Primm and effectively destroyed their job, well. The player can explore all they want. The Courier didn't know Benny to begin with. You don't exactly get to know someone who robs you and leaves you for dead.
+Monday Green Pretty sure the Courier does actually get amnesia at the start of the game. As he seems really surprised when Ulysses talks about how the protagonist indirectly created the Divide.

I'm still convinced after years, that the Booker we played didn't sell the baby. The twins never say you forget, but it's confirmed that if you go to a new reality your nose bleeds and you assume the new memories, which seems to be exactly what happened. Plus, Elizabeth isn't even from this universe, but a separate one where she was sold
On my second playthrough of KoTor as a joke I named my character "Darven." I thought I was being clever. A few years later I found the joke embarrassing. A few more years later and I realize George Lucas probably would've been proud of me.
The first playthrough on KOTOR, I played Benevolent Jedi, getting all my followers' dispositions as high as I could. After seeing how I'd been screwed over by said Jedi....Well, it was certainly much more fun the next time I played. Maybe do an episode on "Games Where the Good Guys Weren't"?
What I love about Silent Hill 2 is, even when you know everything, you don't know everything. I mean, my personal theory is that Mary requested to be euthanised, and James agreed a little too quickly because taking care of a bedridden terminal patient is really stressful and also he's kind of a dick (or, as I've also seen him described, "not merely a tool, not merely a toolbox, but some kind of box that exists to hold toolboxes"). But if your personal theory is that Mary wanted to die and James only assisted after months of solemn, sobbing contemplation, or that Mary didn't want to die at all and James thought "this whole waiting for my wife to die so I can hit the town thing is getting really drawn out, let's accelerate the process a little", the game is perfectly happy to back up those theories, too. Actually, what I love about Silent Hill 2 is just that the town uses your guilt to eat you. It's not just doing bad things that gets you in the triangle-heavy firetown, it's your own guilt as a result. So when Eddie decides he doesn't feel guilty about killing people, and hell, he's gonna kill some more people, it's gonna be great, he's free. The town's not a moral arbiter. It's just a hungry hungry psychic genius loci monster. Actually, what I love about Silent Hill 2 is everything.
How did you not mention Spec Ops: The Line? That was a truly harrowing revelation when you remembered what you'd done! You truly defined crossing the line in that one
as for booker dewitt, i still gst the feeling that he wasnt from that world, or even the same one to trade anna. all of his symptoms are of an outside worlder recieving memories of a different booker, not just amnesia
No Final Fantasy 6? Terra and the whole being half magical monster, being raised by the evil Gesthalian Empire, slaughtering 50 of their own soldiers in a single training bout, cutting a swath through an innocent town just to get to their mines, etc.
Soul Calibur 1 was actually called Soul Blade. Fun fact, the endings for each character's ending can be changed by pressing certain buttons during the cinematic scene.
13:27 "What, was it casual Friday at the science lab?" - considering how I and most of my colleagues dress - this is not "casual", this is borderline semi-formal. How did Robin from Fire Emblem Awakening not make this list? You don't get much darker a secret than (SPOILERS) having the fate of BECOMING A FRIGGIN' DRAGON AND DESTROYING THE WORLD!
There's actually no mention ingame of how long it's been since Revan's mindwipe and the start of the actual game. There might be a mention of how long ago Malak betrayed Revan, but Revan was grievously wounded then, so the actual mindwipe wouldn't have started right away .
What about danganronpa 2: Goodbye despair? I mean being forced to forget that you started the most tragic event in human history so you you become a better person is a pretty big deal.
The whole time I played Bioshock I shipped him with Elizabeth as a joke. I wish you could see the look on my face when I picked her up from the cradle and it dawned on me, that for the past month I had been joking about him kissing his daughter.
the Infinity Blade series, through death and rebirth over hundreds of years, the main character Sirus develops amnesia only to later discover that he used to be the tyrant king Ausar, which is revealed in secret area's in the second game and fully in the third.
Actually the truth in Prototype is that Alex has been dead since the beginning of the game, you have been playing as The Virus wearing an Alex suit this whole time. And even the Virus is disgusted by what Alex did
Final Fantasy VII, Cloud forgets he is just a grunt, Shinra murdered his best friend and spends the early part of the game hitting on his former best friend's girl. Final Fantasy VIII, Squall forgets growing up in an orphanage with all of the people that become his companions Also that the nice lady who ran said home was abducted and possessed to take over the world.
Don't forget the other half of Alex Mercer's secret: the playable character is actually a virus-created replica of Alex and the real one is actually already dead.
And the Virus only uses his form as defeat because he was born in it... The virus technically doesn't have vital organs or bones... It could look however it want. Only Alex's memories caused confusion and he thought he was human
I just realized that every single Bioshock game involves some form of amnesia. Even Subject Sigma from the Minerva's Den DLC for Bioshock 2 had amnesia.
You didn't release the virus on Penn Station. Alex Mercer did. The big twist at the end of Prototype (and quite a good one, for a game that's quite, well, forgettable _(eh? eh?)_ for all of its run) is that you, the player character, are not Alex Mercer. You are a clump of viral cells that Mercer released, and that imprinted on his dead corpse, copied his body, his cool jacket and fragments of his memories, and thinks of itself as him until the end - which is why you have cool gross powers and everyone else just looks like a ReDead from Zelda when infected.
I feel like if this video came out any later, Doki Doki Literature Club would definitely be on here. Seriously, the main character forgets things so many times to the point where I think he may have horrible short-term memory.
First things first: Spoiler warning for the Persona 2 duology. now that internet etiquette is out of the way: How about persona 2 eternal punishment. turns out you got killed in the fulfillment of a quasi-ancient prophecy and in doing so caused the apocalypse. (i was going to go for Innocent sin, "turns out your childhood friend burned alive in front of you" but it's implied tatsuya remembered it from the start, i could've played it from Eikichi or Lisa's point of view though but the list seems to be player characters only)

I see Jane's mind control experiments on Andy are certainly improving.
How about Geralt of Rivia forgetting the love of his life Yennefer and hooking up with her friend?
To be fair, he did that he kept doing that even when he very well remembered Yen.
and Yen knew about it and could have teleported over and told Geralt about their history but nah
Yennefer makes a wish, which could give Geralt the excuse to stick with Triss
That's not really a dark secret, though.
yen had also lost her memory
memory loss is a side effect of leaving/escaping from the wild hunt
From the thumbnail and title I thought you meant the seven times just in the game amnesia: the dark descent
Same. I thought it meant that the secrets were so bad that your secrets meant nothing compared to them.
GrapeApeTape yeah me too
GrapeApeTape same
Oh, so I WASN'T the only one.
Yep, same here
KOTOR really was "you should have killed me when you had the chance - the game
On my second playthrough of KoTor as a joke I named my character "Darven." I thought I was being clever.
A few years later I found the joke embarrassing. A few more years later and I realize George Lucas probably would've been proud of me.
that's okay on one of my saves I was DarthTeddyBear
The first playthrough on KOTOR, I played Benevolent Jedi, getting all my followers' dispositions as high as I could. After seeing how I'd been screwed over by said Jedi....Well, it was certainly much more fun the next time I played.
Maybe do an episode on "Games Where the Good Guys Weren't"?
Tahiti
It's a magical place
It sucked
Benny Kwaakwah i get it!
JANE'S FACE DURING THE FOGGY JOKE
hotblooded94 I Know right. Such a cutie.
Pogchamp 😁
Andy laughed, too. Listen.
Finding out I was Revan all along blew my tiny mind as a child.
Shower thought: "Beware spoilers" is a spoiler for what games will be in the video.
Mind is blown
MIND. IS. BLOWN
polkarrty yup
Ye-Gon Ryoo oh shit you're right
i knew this, thats why i always cover my eyes when the titles show up
What I love about Silent Hill 2 is, even when you know everything, you don't know everything.
The elephant never forgets, but i forget what the elephant remembers.
What about that one dude from that one Castlevania game who went the whole game without knowing he was Dracula?
We all forget we're Dracula sometimes.
Soma Cruz. Aria of Sorrow. Great game.
No Final Fantasy 6? Terra and the whole being half magical monster, being raised by the evil Gesthalian Empire, slaughtering 50 of their own soldiers in a single training bout, cutting a swath through an innocent town just to get to their mines, etc.
Is it ever really the final fantasy though?
Shouldn't they name it yet another fantasy?
You forgot murdered soul suspect which surprised the hell out of me because throughout the game I was doing nothing but good deeds.
I'm trying to think of other examples of amnesia making you forget tragic events, but I can't remember any. Oh well.
Soul Calibur 1 was actually called Soul Blade. Fun fact, the endings for each character's ending can be changed by pressing certain buttons during the cinematic scene.
Woke up in a Mexican brothel with no memory and $6000.Best weekend ever
Gez I'd be sad to lose 6 grand.
He's saying he woke up WITH 6 grand.
@@TheArcSet If he had an awesome weekend, you really think he left the brothel with it?
The entire cast of the second Danganronpa game... need I say more?
5:26 Can we make Andy grow mutton chops. I mean, his sideburns are pretty large all ready I think he can do it.
13:27 "What, was it casual Friday at the science lab?" - considering how I and most of my colleagues dress - this is not "casual", this is borderline semi-formal. He's wearing white shirt - take off the leather jacket and the hoodie, put on a tie and you're ready for your customer presentation or meeting with a senior manager.
Andy I'm in Italy now and my conection is well... none existent this video stoped loading at 0:00. I was looking and at your face and thought I might make it a meme. Will you mind?
Adam II YES
7:00 JANE MADE LUKE PROUD WITH THAT ONE
What about in Skyrim? That Namira cannibal tells you that you literally forget you ate a family member and you just roll w/ it
At the guy fierie restaurant FLAVORTOWN was on the wall in giant text, at least the food was edible
When you said something about characters having amnesia I was like "You better put Amnesia on the list."
Are you sure Seigfried had amnesia?
He is a blonde after all.
Actually the truth in Prototype is that Alex has been dead since the beginning of the game, you have been playing as The Virus wearing an Alex suit this whole time. And even the Virus is disgusted by what Alex did
What about Celebrimbor from Shadow of Mordor?
Does he count?
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon explorers of time, forgetting your best friend, worst enemy and literally everything but the fact that you were human before
Anyone else got the Agents of Shield reference at 7:56 ?
its a magical place
0:50 Have you ever heard about how you ended up on this ship? I thought so, it's not a story the Jedi would tell you...
If you're not super careful when saying "Chernobyl", it turns into Schnobble (as evidenced in this video).
What, no love for "Fire Emblem: Awakening" and its favorite amnesiac Robin?
In Danganronpa 2, all of the characters are actually ultimate despairs, oncluding the character you play as
Does BJ Blazkowicz count surely 14 years in and asylum with ‘memory loss’?
Don't forget the other half of Alex Mercer's secret: the playable character is actually a virus-created replica of Alex and the real one is actually already dead.
But you forgot that Alex is really dead and the virus took over his appearance that not Alex that's gust his body!!
And the Virus only uses his form as defeat because he was born in it...
The virus technically doesn't have vital organs or bones... It could look however it want. Only Alex's memories caused confusion and he thought he was human
I just realized that every single Bioshock game involves some form of amnesia. Even Subject Sigma from the Minerva's Den DLC for Bioshock 2 had amnesia.
in the words of Phil Coulson T.A.H.I.T.I it's a magical place
Love how the barber shop quartet sings God Only Knows by the beach boys
My amnesia made me forget when I last was this early!
Uh huh
It almost made you forget proper grammar.
austinthehotty Yes! Even worse!
It’s literally called Amnesia: The Darkest Secret. Lol
*dark descent

My justification in Skyrim for collecting Black Soul gems:
"Well this staff isn't going to recharge itself, you know"
Where's MGSV's Phantom Snake? :p
that wasn't amnesia, that was mental reconditioning.
Late reply but Bioshock Infinite wouldn't count if that was the case
I love the perfect way Jane explained how Silent hill works

I said come in, don't stand there.
had to scroll down way too far for this comment.
I would like to see one of these where the protagonist of a game is the antagonist in the sequel
I was going to comment, but I forgot what I was going to say.
Magna Carta 2? Turns out one of the main characters is one of the most powerful members of the evil side of the war.
Three words: The Sexy Brutale
"Shernobble"
Oh, Mike, how we enjoy your presence.
I really gotta go play Kotor like right now
I do two playthroughs a day I have a addiction :P
I feel like if this video came out any later, Doki Doki Literature Club would definitely be on here. Seriously, the main character forgets things so many times to the point where I think he may have horrible short-term memory.
Breath of the Wild. Link forgets his job. Jobs are a pretty dark secret.
Manhunt 2, The Suffering, F.E.A.R., Amnesia: Justine, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs...
First things first: Spoiler warning for the Persona 2 duology.
now that internet etiquette is out of the way:
How about persona 2 eternal punishment. turns out you got killed in the fulfillment of a quasi-ancient prophecy and in doing so caused the apocalypse.
(i was going to go for Innocent sin, "turns out your childhood friend burned alive in front of you" but it's implied tatsuya remembered it from the start, i could've played it from Eikichi or Lisa's point of view though but the list seems to be player characters only)
Sees name of video, calmly waits for KOTOR
5:20 did he say wounded Knee?! Wtf we learned sth about that just today in school! Thats not random anymore
Ali Altan wait 'till you hear about the Pinkertons, too! that also played a big part in Booker's life.
I 100% expected Final Fantasy 6, 7 and/or 8 to be on this list.
