My late grandmother (b 1876) used to speak of buying a big block of ice from the itinerant ice man once per week, to place in the large ice box. It's possible that steam powered refrigeration plants were competing with natural ice by then, but you wouldn't dream of melting the ice man's wares to drink - they would lie like a flat-fish about the water source!
