Dear Matt (and Brant also...)! The talk is fabulous. Really. I almost cried just from imagining how much the story is like the true Lord of the Rings, with Joseph hiding and defending the true Heir to the Throne and fleeing to Egypt. Wow. And btw - the joke about Eusebius' Church History - "We all have a copy!" - is one of the best naturally funny scenes I have ever seen. @@maryhowsrd3381 St. Joseph was King first. That's why he had to die before Our Lord's public ministry could start. The title first had to pass from St. Joseph to Jesus, which is why St. Joseph is not there when Jesus goes public as heir to David's throne.
Loved the interview! For the past several months St. Joseph has been one of my companions in reading the Bible. I pray to him calling him "the teacher of the Teacher" - he would have taught the child Jesus the Jewish Scriptures.
As expected from Dr Pitre's exposition of the Scriptures, I am blown away again. From this point on reading Matthew's genealogy litany will be seen in a new and exciting way! Thank you Dr. Pitre. I recently bought Dr. Pitre's book, "Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist: Unlocking the Secrets of the Last Supper." It was my first encounter with his work, as books by this author are not very accessible in the Philippines, and those available often come with a hefty price tag. However, it was worth every penny. There were moments when I wept because it was really touching. Thank you so much for this podcast!

Great episode. I truly loved it. While listening, I kept thinking of Saint Joseph as a kind of true life Aragorn (from the Lord of the Rings). That was certainly outrageous, but cool. I also reflected on the fact that Pope Francis has a deep devotion to Saint Joseph, which complements Pope John Paul II’s devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and also explains some of their differences in rule and style.
I wish there was more talk on how to evangelize or what to do when loved ones leaves the Catholic Church. I have 3 grown sons who left the Catholic Church. My mother and my two sisters, too.

It does not matter what Origen, Augustin, Ignatius of Antioch, Dr. Brant Pitre, or the Pope believed and said, what matters MOST is what Christ Jesus taught to His Apostles that we received from them, and the "Written WORD of God" which was fully completed after the Gospel of John and the Book of Revelation were completely written in around 110 A.D. which is PROFITABLE for Doctrine, for REPROOF/REBUKE, for CORRECTION, and for INSTRUCTION in RIGHTEOUSNESS... (ref. 2 Timothy 3:16)... Praise be to God in Christ Jesus... Amen.

Its great that you're not charging for this, or that its one of your lessons you have to pay for.
When it comes to Religious/Spiritual Matters, there must be only ONE Church, ONE Inspired Scripture, ONE Way, ONE Life, ONE Truth, ONE Father God, ONE Son/Word/Christ Jesus, ONE Holy Spirit... can not be many sources of TRUTH... Amen.
Oral/Spoken and Written Tradition must be UNITED AS ONE without Contradictions, however, if it does, the Written Tradition must overrule/ supersede the practice of the Oral/spoken Tradition... As long as no contradiction, that is fine...
If it is not WRITTEN, therefore, it must be a False Teachings/doctrine/dogma... while if it is WRITTEN, therefore it must be the Biblical TRUTH.
St. Paul said, "DO NOT GO BEYOND/EXCEED WHAT IS WRITTEN" (ref. 1 Corin. 4:6)... or else, if you do, God's CURSE (anathema/eternal damnation) will fall upon you." (ref. Gal. 1:8)... Praise be to God in Christ Jesus... Amen.
This would not make Mary the Queen of the kingdom of David. Joseph mother would have been the Queen. However because he humbly passes up the throne in order to stay alive and protect his adopted son who is the heir to the davidic throne forever Mary becomes the queen of the kingdom when Jesus takes His throne.
God's plan of salvation is marvelous in our sight. Amen and Alleluia.

Agreeing to desagree I would add that in a matrilineal setting as Jerusalem stands in the bible saga the Matriarchs like Mary keep the lineage going. The books of Samuel down to Elizabeth, Anna and Mary these point to the Messiah as heir by Grace (Full of Grace), not by right.

It would be interesting to compare Mary’s lineage with Joseph’s. A child is Jewish if the mother is Jewish.

Thanks, Dr Pitre, for lending credence to my analysis that St Joseph was the hidden King of Israel. How else could Jesus claim to be a King unless His father, Joseph, was a King? As well, why would Herod be afraid of a Baby unless the Baby was the Heir to the Throne?
Correct me please if I am wrong. I looked up Nazarite and this is what Wikipedia showed. Nazarite Hebrew translates to "consecrated" or "separated."
Though you did not cover it, Joseph by his free will accepts the visions given in his sleep by God; from the first one of not abandoning Mary but accepting Mary as his wife. God's will before man's will.
You mention that Joseph took his family to Nazareth to protect them having returned from Egypt, but didn't Mary come from Nazareth anyway? And wouldn't Joseph have lived in this area too to become betrothed to her?
Well, I am not naive to the Catholic Theologians / Priesthoods... the Jewish Authority did exactly that to Christ Jesus almost 2000 years ago... If you follow/obey God's WILL through Christ Jesus the Scriptural Way, you will be exactly persecuted or worse be murdered inhumanely without fair trials, history attested to this matters... Amen.
Mary is of levi so the epistles say "we are to be a nation of priests and kings "so having mary as a mother is the continuation of the levitical priesthood in christianity ...we dont talk about this enough !

Dr Pitre said that "Joseph finds Jerusalem too dangerous when returning from Egypt so chooses a small town, Nazareth...." But, isn't that where he and Mary met, married, lived and came from when they went to Bethlehem for the census? Further, wouldn't Joseph have relatives in Bethlehem where they could have stayed? Or at Elizabeth's near-by home? Where did they 'live' in Bethlehem for the 2 years prior to the kings' arrival? Scripture states they were in a house...And if the couple did indeed come from Nazareth, a week's walk north, they would have been with others. Where were the women of that group when Mary had Jesus? I would think she had ladies to help her. My theory (lol) is that Mary and Joseph did indeed to go a relative's home, and stayed in the stable (which were and still are attached to the living quarters) and then put Jesus in one of the clean extra mangers. PLEASE, Dr Pitre, write another book!!! I love your teachings, your humor, and the way you present! Thank you so much! (Also so enjoy Matt Leonard!!) 👍
Joseph is actually commanded by the angel to name Jesus: "She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus" (Mt 1:21)
Saint Joseph believed God. His love for God and his family was more important than the throne.

With due respect, you are Biblically wrong to say, that is the job of the Church to VERIFY, perhaps through the Roman Catholic Magisterium...
Apostle John clearly said and instructed us all, "TEST every SPIRIT (Priest, Pope, Theologians, Pastors, Preachers, Prophets, etc.) whether the SPIRIT (doctrines/dogmas/teachings/laws, etc.) came from God or Not."... (ref. 1 John 4:1)...
Therefore, if it is WRITTEN, then it is from God... while if it is NOT WRITTEN, then, it is NOT from God... logically speaking... (can not be otherwise).

...made a carpenter...I believe the Greek word actually means a builder. He would have had both carpentry and masonry skills. This too is a message. Both Joseph and Jesus, each in their way built up and still build up the Royal House of God, in which we have been adopted, just as Joseph adopted Jesus. Perhaps God won't be outdone in generosity. Joseph adopted his Son, so now Jesus will adopt all of humanity willing to say "Yes" to our Lord.
