Good info here , but the gap between the new window frame and the existing old window jamb must be insulated or at least caulked if you don’t want air leaks. The outside needs caulking as well.

First video I found that includes installation of the seal angle and head expander. Thanks for covering those apparently obscure items.
We ordered the American Craftsman 50 Series windows which arrived with the head expander and seal angle pieces clipped to the bottom of the window.
There were no instructions. I initially thought this was how they were to be installed, ie. along the bottom of the replacement window. Fortunately while test fitting the window, the expander hit my knee and fell off, at which point we realized there was a sill angle piece there as well. We had to look up the instructions online, and they were still unclear about how to install the sill angle.
Thank you very much for posting this information!

First apply silicone to the sill so water doesn’t come back underneath from strong rains/snow & the window needs to be centered/squared using shims so it doesn’t bow outwards so it can be tightened securely not left snugged also by doing so you can apply light expanding window foam all around it and Caulk the outside all around the window but not the inside so the foam can breath the trim will hide the foam. 👍🏻

I'm having 10 windows replaced in my house in a couple of months or so and I wanted to see the steps of this process before the installers come. I can't believe it's this easy to do. One note that I took from this video is making sure the installers score the paint from the trim before they remove it. I saw another UA-cam video in which this wasn't done and what a zig zag paint cracking disaster that was. Hugo shows how to do this and the rest of the process right.

That's a good video for DIY. As an eighteen year installer, there is a much easier way to remove those windows besides removing the interior trim ( which is usually really old and brittle.) You can use a what some call a drywall hammer that has the axe edge on one side and a regular framing hammer. You can literally chop out the outer stops and remove the window from the outside. That way less mess in customer homes. The interior trim then becomes your stops and windows will line up exactly the same as your method. But yes, very good job sir!

I use a plastic tree wedge for protection under the pry bars so you do not damage the drywall or wood while prying the old frames out if they are nailed in . The plastic wedges can be found at stores that sell chainsaws, I have used them for years installing windows. You can also use the tree wedges as a temporary shim so you do not over tighten the doors or windows, then you remove it later and replace with a composite shim. The composite shims do not absorb water so they work much better long term. Hope this helps someone, I have installed all different brands of windows since the mid 80s. You would not believe the amount of damage the wedges save you from doing when you're trying to break a old window frame out when the nail fin was nailed to death by Billy Bob the installer.

I usually spray Loctite or Great Stuff (blue can) window and door gap filler in the bottom to insulate the air gap under the window base and the window sill then install the window swiftly (not fast , but not slow) as the foam expands, then caulk the inside with paintable caulking and then the outside with paintable or non paintable caulking as well

Be careful with overspray with foam or overpacking fiberglass insular underneath the window sill as it can bow the sill up causing an uneven seal on the bottom sash. Worse, it may actually impede the window’s ability to close.

I too wanted to see a level, shims & opposite, incremental screw installation. I understand that spray foam can bow windows, so they might not work properly. If a space needs to be filled, simply stuff fiberglass insulation or gap filling material in there. This won’t affect the functionality of the window.

When you use vinyl windows the house wants separate from the plastic vinyl...I suggest you check out how to prepare old windows or put in wooden frame windows.... I have windows on my home exactly like the ones in your video and my question is do you, or CAN a person waterproof the sill and/or underneath the exterior trim when replacing a window? With all due respect to David oh, I do not know where this video is taken but that is not how you install Windows and the parts he was referring to or not two parts Tory says they go. Depending on where you live in the country the east coast to West Coast codes and construction are different but you can always waterproof your window seals or perimeter of opening before installing a flange window or fin window. Installers left SUCH big gaps everywhere, by not using 2X4's, when the new windows are so much smaller, you can frame them with 2X4's but they used 1X1, and filled the rest in with gobs of silicone-like an entire INCH of silicone. Honestly, I think the company went cheap. It looks horrible on the outside. Yes, they need to be trimmed still, but such big gaps have me nervous, and I always thought they're supposed to be set IN-these are not even flush with the original siding. To trim them, the whole trim has to be sicking OUT from the original aluminum siding-a horrendous look. Not only that, but they left in the original slanted aluminum-wrapped sill/jambs on the bottom and filled the gap in with caulk. I thought they're supposed to leave the outside framing ALONE....

New vinyl won’t crack very easy, but it’s nice to predrill into the wood also, so the screw goes straight and doesn’t follow the grain and go at an angle and pull the window to one side , but I rarely pre-drill

Wrong, wrong, wrong. this guy doesn't know what he is doing. you have to shim your windows because it allows for wood expansion and contraction. He didn't install flashing either. he gets a D. here is a video on shimming windows ua-cam.com/video/IDGg66Y6h9Q/v-deo.html ,and heres one on installing flashing so you can get an A and not a D like the guy in the video did.

Poor video. As a professional I would suggest watching other video's. Bo Buttle tape or caulk or spray foam???? I would fire this guy if I hired him to install windows once I saw all of the mistakes.
