A key point you made here, and one that took me a while to sort out in my head, is to disconnect your feet from your hands. I was always dipping the wing and my body would automatically apply opposite rudder, as if my arms and legs were connected by a cable. Often this meant landing with way too much rudder correction, especially if drifting from the centreline which just exasperated it as I used even more aileron to try to get back. Once I'd managed to disconnect those two things, especially during the flair, my crosswind landings "clicked". Also, landing with the nose pointed down the runway is normally way more important than nailing the centreline, especially on an icy runway here in Norway. The other thing that "clicked" at some point, is that I was not going to smash my wingtip into the ground when applying full aileron in the flair (assuming I was at or approaching stall speed). Don't be afraid to put the controls all the way into the wind on touchdown! Don't pussy around with the controls, react to the wind all the way, with aggressive inputs if necessary.
Hey mate! Thanks for becoming a Patron! It's true though and I like the way you put it. You need to disconnect your hands from your feet. There is no set amount of rudder required or aileron to combat the crosswind.
@@LewDixAviation no worries, I'm planning on becoming an instructor within the next couple of years and your videos are very insightful, and bloody entertaining to boot. Please do keep it up!
Greetings from The Netherlands (EHBK)! Really enjoy your relaxing way of teaching and explaining aviation stuff! Hope to catch you in the future when I'm visiting my relatives in Englewood, FL again and flying from Buchan or Venice airport! Safe flights and keep up the good work!
X04!! That’s my home! I love training over there in apopka. Yeah there are trees on the 33 heading and for 15 there’s power lines and trees on final. I’ve done so many landings on 33 :)
Another great video, Lewis - maybe in your Top 10. First, Juan just gets more disgusting with each video. I don't know how much more of this I can take! Second, we know what a great teacher you are but sometimes forget you're a bad ass pilot as well. You nailed that crosswind landing - even with TR33S on the runway - and then kept going until Juan nailed his. Left the young man feeling confident in his abilities and ready for that check ride. This is textbook - pay attention CFIs!!
Ah thanks a lot! I don't really show what I can do too much on the channel anymore because I'm mainly instructing, but it's great to hear that you like what I can do too! Juan is filthy! He needs a shower... Thanks for the kind words!
@@LewDixAviation another great vid. Juan's last landing was pretty OK however I started twitching waiting for one more to seal it. The conditions were good to build some muscle memory. 10 landings bro.
Given the frequent omission of the critical item of welcoming people to the sky, you should put together a checklist including that mission critical item and sell it on your website! :-)
Worst is when the airfield had one runway and you can literally feel yourself drifting away and have to go around and aim for the runway's SIDE so you can drift into the runway and land. Yeah. My instructor landed it. I couldn't handle
When I land my cfi told me by the runway threshold speed should be 70 knots, but the way I land is I come steaper then pull up flight lvl cut power hold it steady the flare . How many ways is it there to land
I don't let anyone solo in more than 7 knots, but will teach up to the max crosswind component of the plane. I don't see a reason why we shouldn't be exposing students to heavy crosswinds. We shouldn't be scared of them. I deal with them every day at the airline.
Thanks Lou. The limit was 6 ikts whilst I was training and I currently set myself a limit of around 10. I was taught the crab method e.g. nose offset and straighten with rudder on landing but I feel that the “side slip’ approach might help me stay on the centre line more effectively. I got my licence in the UK at Solent Airfield(previously RNAS Daedalus) back in June and I found your videos extremely helpful during the training (and still do) so many thanks for that and if ever you are in this stretch of the woods, I owe you a few beers. I was 63 when I passed so I guess it’s never too late to teach an old dog new manoeuvres 😉 Thanks again Colin
Multiple bad experiences with aircraft cutting me off, flying over me from jack browns when I’m landing and people not making radio calls. I’ve had so many issues there
@@LewDixAviation Flight instruction is not measured on a "dull" scale. Flight instruction is serious business. It is expensive & dangerous and the student needs/deserves to absorb skills & knowledge not be entertained by his instructor. I don't like what you do and if I were you I would be hoping the wrong person in the FAA doesn't tune in.
RAMTEK it is an expensive thing to do. Which is why people deserve to have fun while at the same time learning to fly and gaining valuable skills. As I said, the videos are EDITED. You don’t get the full picture of what we do. You’re very, very naive to think all we do is mess around. Been doing this a long time, and the FAA know I do it. You know why they don’t bother me? Nailed it at the end, too.

He does not.. I do everything independently
Wish I was a student here 😂how y’all have this much fun flying ?
What’s the point in doing it if you’re not gonna have fun! Haha
What's the one thing you would advice to stay focused during these crosswind landings?
Fight the crosswind all the way down to touchdown. The job is not finished at the flare.
Too much horsing around and not enough instruction going on. Instructors should be mentors, not comedians.
Flying with you must be a really dull experience.. Videos are edited for time and entertainment purposes.
