- Proficiency... That about sums up aviation. It's all about proficiency. Whether it be getting ready for a checkride or simply reminding yourself how to do something, you have to be proficient.
Today I took N32042 up to practice some crosswind landings in the traffic pattern at KORL. Not my best performance, but definitely not my worst either.
Enjoy the landings!

The swearing at yourself while solo is very fucking relatable
I'm very critical of myself.. Always have been haha
10:09 “Bodyodyodyody”😂😂😂😂😂
12:15 “ohhh bird, where’s his ADS-B?”
I laughed more than I should have lollll
haha I'm glad!
Currency keeps you legal.
Proficiency keeps you alive.
Man this video helped me a lot with my confidence. I was flying 46H the other day In the same winds getting ready for my checkride, and was making the same facial expressions. This makes me feel better cause I was pretty hard on myself after.
Excellent! Enjoyed the video and watching you fly the pattern. Fly safe!
I thoroughly enjoyed this video! I flew earlier this week for my solo XC. I took off runway 11 winds were 100 @ 9kts G16kts Variable ! The winds weren’t that bad 30 mins earlier but I figured I’d try it. Not the best decision to say the least. I was getting tossed about like a plastic bag in the wind. I figured if I go a little higher towards my intended altitude it would get better... it didn’t. It got worst. So I landed that bad boy while still in the flight pattern. I had plenty of colorful language for the winds that day lol I will try again to complete my XC just not this week.Your reaction was refreshing and genuine. Exactly what I needed after my fail this week.
LMAO this man singing while flying this is why ur my fav UA-cam 🤣🤣😭
😂 Thank you!
So amazing can't wait till I get started.
This solo talking to yourself, is so damn relatable. Really liked this.
"Just gliiide it in boys" Great Herbert from Family Guy impression there, Lewdix! I'm binging your vids as of the last month getting ready for my PPL checkride - loving it!
Excellent glad to hear it! About the binging of my videos, not the Herbert voice! haha
Really nice short approach considering that crosswind. It was great to see your feet dancing on the pedals to see how much correction was required. Must admit it was a bit strange not hearing your hilarious laugh and shenanigans 😆. Keep up the great videos!!
Proficiency leads to “oh hell yeah!”
Bare minimum currency leads to “oh shit”
That's a good one haha
The reason why we all are subscribed is because you are a legend. Keep the great work up 😁
Thanks mate!
great video, nice technique, love seeing fellow cherokee drivers representing! Current does not equal proficient - I always get up on those gusty days to do exactly this, good times!
Great stuff!! Crosswinds scare me, so thanks for being real. Subscribed!
Thanks for the sub! Welcome to the channel!
what was the METAR during this? Just curious. Nice video, cool seeing a CFI practicing and self-evaluating.
As an old CFII, I bounced on a heavy cross wind landing in January, cussed myself out. Good times.
Lew Dix for president!
Welcome America To The Sky Again... Catchy slogan..
Excellent!!! ✈️
Always enjoy your videos as I'm going through my flight training right now. I have learned quite a bit from watching. It was your crosswind advice of "dynamic" controls that helped me on my crosswind landings.... Even though your disclaimer says this is for entertainment only......😜
YEA STOP LEARNING FROM MY STUFF! haha No I'm glad to hear you gain something from my videos!
At least you remembered to take the flaps out 🤦🏻♂️
I’m in the PPL in kissimmee and had the same struggle with my landings. I love your videos. Keep up the great work.
Thanks, I'm glad you love my vids!
Good stuff brother
the music change at the start and end was a nice surprise tbh it was good
Love the jersey! Always great videos!
Thank you!
oohhh no the bomb references got me lol
😂💣
Fantastic video
Thank you
The first landing was really really good! Watching your foot work on the rudder and tapping the yoke to the opposite direction. I will try that next time with my cross winds landing!
Thank you!
“Ou bird. Where’s his ADS-B?” 😂 why am I subscribed to this channel
haha thank you 😂
I was jammin out to the beats. Good stuff!
I'm glad. I've found some cool music recently!
I subscribe because this gets me back in the Warrior while sitting at the computer. It's called 'Hanger UA-cam Flying'. As for proficiency vs currency....I have a sick sense of humor that took this question to another place. If I expound...UA-cam would be pissed...haha.
hahaha.. Well I'm glad you're subscribed! You've been around for a while so thank you
That discount on the flying eyes really came through!
Glad to hear it!
Nice to see you flying the circuits (sorry patterns) especially on a bumpy day. I tend to agree with the competency keeps you legal and proficiency keeps you safe statement. Although competency is the ability to do something successfully and efficiently ... Last flight I made I had a near miss with a buzzard.
Cheers mate
Just discovered your channel Lew, great stuff, from a PA28 student close to his skills test.
Glad you found my channel! Good luck on the test!
@@LewDixAviation Cheers mate!
Anyhow, thanks for making this video, it’s beautiful to see that also CFIs can get wrong. I’m not a F.I but in my opinion you made good landings although the gusts
Thank you mate!
Well, the only thing I could think of watching the video is "Three lions on the shirt". Thanks for that!
haha You're welcome!
"Where's (the bird's) ADS-B?" 😂🤣😆
Practice practice practice
Cessna Aircraft Company has delivered more than 43,000 Cessna 172 airplanes to date. This makes it the best-selling, most widely flown airplane ever built. It also has a reputation for being the safest general aviation aircraft available.
Doesn’t change its float characteristics or instability during maneuvers 😄
I love the unfiltered honest comments.
Currency: Am I legal?
Proficiency: Am I safe?
I think the opposite
No no no no no, a balloon where! Hahahaha
Skillshare is really paying off huh? These edits are fire lol great job brother 🛫
haha thanks mate!
172 is a boat!!
Currency: the last time you ate some currants.
Proficiency: how good you can currently bake (?) profiteroles.
Well I know I subscribed because I don't know anyone with a British accent. I feel cultured when I watch yer vids ha
haha excellent! If you start developing an English accent, let me know..
I am getting close to checkride but still struggle with gusty conditions. You seem to have fun with it while I tend to suck the seat cushion right on up. Any tips on feeling better about these conditions? I guess the right answer is to keep doing them and become more "proficient"???
damn birds with no ADS-B!
Just majorly disrespectful!
Any landing that you walk away from is a good landing... lol 😂 I think Chuck Yeager said that one time!
That's not good enough for me! It's greaser or fail!
There's a small range between "too rough to fly" and "too rough to take passengers" where I love to get out and practice. Finding those limits can be tricky though, at some point I'm going to take off and not be able to get back down again (home airport is small and particularly turbulent). Always got the backup option of a much larger runway 10 minutes away to go to! Inconvenient but alive.
Live stream was at midnight here - just a tad too late for me to join. Maybe next time!
I like your explanation man! I'll be doing another stream soon!
Is that a giant Sega Dreamcast at 4:20?
i recently went flying in a tecnam eaglet with a 10k hour airline pilot and when he landed it in crosswind, he did what you did with the sharp and agressive control inputs i asked him to explain the method but i dont think he knew how to explain it. I have been taught to crab or slip in to final over the fence and "find the sweet spot", the aggressive inputs are still a mystery to me are you able to explain whats going on with that method?
I flew to work today. It was calm winds this morning here in Bartow, but now they are gusting to 20. Hopefully they die down this evening.
How long does that take you?
I feel your pain! I go to Polk state at KLAL and had to shift all my training blocks to early morning because of the late gusty winds!
currency is meeting the FAA’s standards and regulations, think I am “legal” to fly under their jurisdiction. proficiency is the am I competent and able to fly the plane accurately and more important safely.
I like it!
How long are u going to be in Orlando ?
Hey if you need any tips on them crosswind landings I just got some tips from my instructor recently ;)
I think there’s a video on it 😏
Currency is simply are you legal to fly under that situation. Proficiency is if you're actually flying safely and skillfully. You can have one without the other. Being current without being proficient is pretty self-explanatory; you're legal but not skillful. Being proficient without being current is also possible; if I'm keeping up with my skills and I flew yesterday but my BFR ran out today, I may be proficient, but not current.
Why did you cut the power midfield on the last one? Don't you usually do that when abeam the numbers?
Felt like it 🤷🏼♂️ Really short approach
Hey Lew, do you normally do full flaps landings? I very rarely do, almost always 2 notches. Curious on your thoughts on this. Thanks!
Hey! I land full flaps unless it’s gusty.
@@LewDixAviation I find my biggest problem is speed control, coming in too fast. Maybe I need to get that last notch out there. Thanks Lew!
@@IslandSimPilot Exactly! It’s there for your benefit 👍🏻
@@LewDixAviation Really appreciate it, Lew. I was taught that your "normal" landing was two notches and never really gave it much thought. Where in the pattern or approach would you normally put that third notch in? Sorry for the many questions, I really do appreciate it!
What would be great is if someone would place a camera to show the rudder pedals and sync them with one showing the yoke on approach with the crab and then landing in the crosswind
Current: Six approaches, tracking and holding, etc. every six months via the hood, foggles, or the sim.
Proficient: Seeking out solid IMC and gaining actual experience in both attitude flying and instrument approaches to landing. Low to mid level fair weather cumulus clouds are really good with keeping you proficient as the up and down drafts aren't severe but will teach you how to ignore the somatogravic sensations. You should also work to challenge your task saturation on instruments like doing sim work or foggles work with ATC when it's busy, or something like an Oscar Pattern while running checklists.
Currency is legality
Proficiency is how you do things properly
I wish birds had ADSB!
Wait... what is that jerky movement on the controls? man come on.... first thing to teach, dont overcontrol the aircraft! hahahha
Share your Playlist!
C172 floating down the runway at 40kt.
Proficiency is SAFE current is LEGAL! Love the videos
Thanks mate!
What song is that at the beginning?
“Flying” by INSKY
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
The radio calls were better today🤭
Finally!
Whats the name of the song at the beginning ?
“Flying” by INSKY
I jumped ahead to your 2nd landing and thought you were in a Cessna.
😂
My Cessna 150 doesn’t float with 40° flaps and power idle. Quite the opposite
👍
I don't care how you fly when you are rocking the 3 lions on the shirt. Go team England. 🏴 I have cousins across the pond.
Do they take the piss when you say "go team England"? ;)
Current - you've met the legal requirements on recent experience to be able to fly. (legally allowed to fly)
Proficient - you've had enough (and recent enough) experience to be capable of flying well. (actually capable of flying)
Currency you’re legal
Proficiency is legal and safe ☺️
Nothing wrong with Cessna, other than the wing placement. I died
😂
Still welcome a landing competition with those pitiful landings... o_O
I'm sorry, did Lewdix say Notch of Flaps?... what the eff is that?
Sorry.. Nootch of floop
Currency is legal minimums while proficiency is flying the plane well and making smart decisions
I like it!
Where is his ADS-B? Freaking gold! Considered stolen
😂
Loved this video.
Currency is more of a legal definition, you have done 3 landings in 90 days. Proficiency is being comfortable with the plane and flying much more than the required 3 landings in 90 days.
What is the purpose of the velcro on the shoulder harness? I've never seen you put anything there....
No idea about the velcro. I'll find a use for it haha.
Current means you're legally current and allowed to do it, proficient means you can actually do it well 🤣
My fourth flight as a student pilot, I was current. I most certainly was not proficient, however.
haha I can imagine!
Hey Dude! Who is your Football Team? MU here!!!
Bolton Wanderers
Currency is meeting the legal standard to pass.... equal a "D grading" as in barely passing. Proficiency is being well practiced in all conditions and maintaining something at a very good to outstanding " B", or "A" grade level. You don't go out to dinner to eat at a restaurant with a county health rating of a "C", not when "B" or "A" inspection gradings are available.
Check the fligh historys and compare.
Current : flightaware.com/live/flight/N258MM/history
Proficient: flightaware.com/live/flight/N16VW/history
I thought currency meant flying (as PIC) within the last 90 days. (I'm just a begining, so I may be completely wrong.)
Currency vs proficiency is like the spandex effect. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.
Love it!
Currency keeps you legal, Proficiency keeps you alive.
Love that
Proficiency means you can land. Currency means your landings are money.
Currency will get you in trouble but proficiency will get you out of the trouble!.....
School name please I'd like to do some flights with you
How can you be my CFI for my privet pilot, I live in Florida so it’s perfect!
Current just means that you're legal to fly because you've done your required maneuvers / landings recently enough. Proficient means you actually know what you're doing in the sky because your knowledge has not faded since the last time you've flown.
Excellent response!
Current - legal to do so.
Proficient - you would do it with your family.
why do i feel like the title should say not click bait at the end
I mean the title says exactly what I do in the video 🤷🏼♂️ 😂
You can be current, but it doesn't mean you are proficient.
Currency is the bare minimum, proficiency is just slightly above the bare minimum.
Proficient is able to fly the plane well. Current is maintaining required pilot minimums for TO and Landings within the 90 day timeframe. You can be current and not be proficient. Not flying for 6 months and going up. Might not have the skill sharp enough.
Love it!
currency is staying in the premier league, proficiency is winning it, since you have a footie shirt on
I like that analogy haha
