    . Are you intimidated by crosswind landings and takeoffs? Or, just want to learn more and freshen up?
    In this video, I teach Leif, a Student Pilot who is preparing for his Private Pilot Checkride. We waited until the time was right to do this lesson and fly in some actual challenging winds. While these aren't the craziest crosswinds you can get, it's always best to do flight training in the actual conditions if possible.
    Leif did a great job recognizing the flying techniques required for but the landings and the takeoffs. It's always a challenge when learning to fly airplanes, because the winds are basically trying to push you off the runway. As pilots, we need to fly so that the nose is lined up with the runway centerline (tip to tail, or longitudinal), and also prevent drift with aileron deflection.
    We do all of this in a Cessna 172 at our home base in Homer, Alaska.
    We also crab into the wind on final approach to landing. There are different ways to do the crosswind landing technique. But with enough practice, and flight training, even a student pilot can become a seasoned aviator.
    You can really see the growth of Leif throughout the lesson. He's a sharp student pilot (and now actually a private pilot) who was a really fun student to have. He passed his checkride with "Flying" colors just a week or so ago!
    Let me know if you have any more questions about crosswind landings or takeoffs.
    Throttle On!

    Recognizing that you two fly with a different style and allowing him to do what works for him is very impressive. Not many people have the ability to trust others, especially students, in that way. I have met many people that felt the way they did things was the only acceptable way.
    Great job, both of you.

    • @angleofattack
      @angleofattack  5 років тому +7

      He's had a lot of solo hours and he's finding some things that work for him. They aren't unsafe. Plus, that's how you get really dialed in as a pilot, when you can experiment with the fundamentals and do new things. Thanks!

    • @LeantoPeak
      @LeantoPeak 4 роки тому +1

      Exactly. I was lucky enough to have 2 instructors, and even though both of them would be "tight" on how we should do things, reality is they had different styles. So this immediately let me know that there is indeed some "room" to find also what works for you... other things, not so much. So I see it as part of our job as pilots to find out what we are really doing wrong, and what is simply a different style. Not easy sometimes!

    This is great. I laughed when he forgot to flare. I did the exact same thing when first doing crosswind landings. All the focus on that aileron and I forgot I still had to flare. 😆 Nice job all around!

      He did pass his checkride! He's a pilot now. He actually bought an airplane while we were doing our final prep, and came home and basically he's been flying the pants off the thing since.

    I really like your instruction style. Well done. Congratulations to Leif for making PP.
    I don't think I could ever learn too much about crosswind landings. Videos like this one add to whats in the memory banks. I appreciate it. I like to practice crosswind landings. Some days they go well and are fun... some days the wind is smarter than me and they could be improved.
    I am fortunate to be able to fly where my home airport (FMN) is on the top of a mesa. Wind, crosswind, and wind shear are all part of flying here.

    • @angleofattack
      @angleofattack  5 років тому +1

      That will make you a really sharp pilot when it's a normal part of flying at your home airport. Sure makes it easy when there isn't a lot of wind elsewhere! Thanks for the great comment.

    That's awesome that you don't have to worry about crosswinds that often. Here in South Dakota, we are always dealing with some type of crosswind. The first few times I shot approaches without a crosswind seemed really strange to me! Thanks for taking us along!

    • @angleofattack
      @angleofattack  5 років тому

      Thanks! Yeah, generally it blows right down the bay, either way. Don't get a crosswind unless we have a system moving through, and even then it only lasts a few hours.
