In this video I will show you how to make a router table extension for a table saw. In my case the table saw is the Evolution Rage 5S. This router table should meet all your needs plus its perfect for small workshop where space is at premium. The build compromises of T-Track solutions, fence that accommodates dust extraction and different type of bit sizes.

Quick suggestion for the levelling screws - add a nut to each bolt under the plate so that when the plate is set at level you can "lock" the bolt positions (I would guess that vibration from the router could/would cause the bolts to move if not locked)

For my router lift I use a scissor car jack which cost £2 on a car boot and it works fantastic!

My router table has a 1 & 1/2 inch thick top (2 pieces of 3/4 plywood found in a dumpster where I used to work - so this is free) and I used a fixed router base and mounted it under the table top. I then ran a 3/4 inch bit up through the table top and had a center hope that exactly matched up with the router base and the fence. I eventually cut a hole with the largest router bit I have and made a recess in the top of the table for different sizes of wood plates for different diameter of router bits. The plates are a snug fit but if and when they get loose I have room to use a screw to keep them in place. I can not afford a router lift that costs more than the router I have. I like the use of the epoxy to mount the "T" track. I will have to get some. I have never used this glue before and I have been wood working since I was 8 years old and I am 76 now. Time to try the epoxy glue I think... I have a box like yours, then I built another box that is on wheels (I have a cabinet saw that I move at times) and the router box sets on the second box and the second box has drawers in it for storage. I love those metal inserts and use them all of the time - love - love - love...
Sounds like you have a nice workshops and a lot of passion for woodworking and DIY 😁👍 yes been using 5 minute epoxy in my workshop for few years and so far never failed me 👍
this looks brilliant, defo on my list of things to do, the solution to the router plate holes is genius, been putting of buying one of those because of mismatch the holes. For the dust extraction I have seen other UA-camrs put a 45 degree 3mm square panel to make the volume of the dust extraction box smaller and improve suction, but yours looks good enough.

Thank you. With the dust extraction I was thinking of installing PVC piping as a permanent part of the fence. But it actually made no sense for my dust extraction set up to do that. As I'm not planning to make any changes to my dust extraction this way seems to be more that sufficient and simple. And its not in the way. Although I'm still thinking of how to sort out the dust extraction from the box where the router sits, got few ideas we will see what will come out of them.

Yes it was a big decision after 15 years living in UK, our kids being born there plus a house etc. But so far it's OK, we miss our friends and a lot of things however in time we will adjust to this new situation. We'll it took me long enough to make this project and I'm glad it could be an inspiration 👍😁

Hi Tomasz. Greetings from Germany. I got my Rage 5s at x-mas from my parents and my parents in law. I'm looking forward to assemble it and build up my new workspace.
Your reviews and videos had an great influence for my desicion to go for the rage 5s.
Now my answer to your question. I'm going to build up a new workspace in the next months. In Germany the price for wood and everything like plywood is also increasing insanely. So I definitely upsilcle some stuff that I have and also I will use some wood from euro pallets or something else.
It's realy insane. Some construction wood has increased some around 750% in price.
Same in Poland, the prices are mad 😢 good luck with the workshop setup 👍

Your video is absolutely what I needed. I too have the Rage 5S and am trying to adapt it to take my trend router. I’m reasonably new to woodworking and I’ve tried several ideas but failed miserably each time. So I’m going with you on this one.

PS now retired, not tired and ready to rev up my machines - with a little help and advice.
Woodworking is a great hobby, it releases our inner creativity 👍
In the end I have not made the plans as it seems the saws vary slightly in dimensions.
However I had many requests for it so I make try to make some plans but the measurements you will have to check for your saw so it all fits correctly.
I'll try to make them by the middle of next week. Once they are ready I'll will let everyone know through my Instagram, Facebook page and community post here on UA-cam 👍
Considering that you already made an almost-fully enclosed box, I'd suggest a dust-recovering solution seen elsewhere: a collecting tray under the router - large enough to intercept all the falling dust - and obviously a front closing panel for the box itself.
P.S. I wish you had produced this video one year ago. It would've saved me a lot of work and material to build a self-standing router table which also takes a lot of my precious space. Sigh!
Hehe I wish I had made it sooner as well. Yes that what I was thinking for the dust extraction as well. Nothing fancy, just something that works.

Re. the router insert plate- there are currently (December 2021) some available on eBay for about £14 that measure 280mmW x 118mmD x 8mmH, so smaller than yours. They have two sets of pre-drilled holes to accommodate a router base plate- the smaller set fits the Katsu palm trimmer/router perfectly (I know, but I'm only doing light stuff...).

Great build so far Tomasz as for the wood you use, i am the same any bedroom wardrobes i have the doors, sides, top and bottom in pieces put in my shed, they are as you said just laminate chip board but good for worktops and stuff.

I bought the same table saw under a different Chinese brand name and they were selling metal plates for mounting the router and electric hand planer. Already made ones. So you can make one for jointing with a hand planer.

Thanks so much Thomasz, this truly is genius and is so what I need to do with my Rage 5S. However, I just wanted to confirm that once this router box/table is fitted, am I right in saying I'll be unable to move / roll the the table saw on its wheels? It would become a stationary table saw? Unless I'm missing something.
You can still roll it, and fold it up. I think I did show that in my final video of this build.

Wouldn't a larger hose reduce the suction force? Same volume of sucked air (depends on the hoover power) but "distributed" on a larger hose section.
@@carloduroni5629 No. A larger hose would increase the flow volume and thus "sweep up" more dust. It's not about " suction force" ie the pressure reduction but the rate of flow which determines the effectiveness of dust extraction.

Most of my converted container workshop "furniture" (if you really want to call it that) has at least some recycled wood in it. Old tables, old beds, old shelving, old draws. Anything that looked like it might be useful I kept.
I wouldn't recommend it as a general approach, as once you have accumulated all the "wood", it will just take up space until a project idea comes to mind. You also forget what you actually have, meaning that you have to rummage about in a pile of random of questionable wood to find something that "might" work.
Be ruthless, only keep really big or good quality bits, recycle the rest of it.
Yes I know what you are saying. I do have a tendency to keep everything and in the end it just gets in the way. For one moment I thought I will end that but now looking at the prices of materials I think I will continue that for a little bit longer😂

@@CasualDIY Just looking at when you said not enough board to screw in T Track you could always beef up the underside with strip of ply or MDF ,PS just made the first router table ,awesome
@@chrisybradshaw8594 that could be the case if I wasn't building anything underneath the top. But in this case I couldn't do that unfortunately.
To stop the fence sliding I modified a bolt to fit in the small track on top of the Evolution fence, made a hole in the router fence matching panel to enable it to drop on this bolt and clamp it down with a knob.

Chamfer the bottom of the fence along the front edge so you don't get dust build up and jam up underneath the fence 👍

Great video and what a great idea using the table saw as a base for your router! Im work out of an 8 x6 shed so space is at a premium. One observation, do you think a small shampher on your router fence where it meets the table should be added, it'd give some of the dust somewhere to go?

Hmm could be difficult to raise it, could be too much resistance from the springs.
On my table, I added 2 short lengths of T track in the table top at right angles to the fence and behind it to allow me to lock two stops. This allows me to take partial width cuts and creep up on full width repeatedly, this is important if you are using say a moulding cutter.

hi Tomasz. Your project was an inspiration for what I wanted to do. I also have a sega evolution rage 5s bench and all that empty space on the right was really a waste. My milling machine was in an old banquette made several years ago and I've been wanting to renovate it for some time now. What better occasion to do it?
I took some ideas from this video, I made some changes, I documented all the stages of processing and I must say that I came up with a really nice project. Thanks for sharing your projects.

Thank you. I haven't done a cut list as when I was checking this with my two friends that git this saw the dimensions in all three saws were slightly off. And this has to be precise otherwise it will not fit correctly 🤔

Hi there Thomas Love your videos. I have question on this box. Do you move your table saw around with this box in place? I have long thought of putting a similar box but have always wondered, as i have to put my table in upright position, as i use my garage as my workshop. Can you still access handles and release clamp for moving saw around?
Hi,
It's slightly more awkward but you cam reach the handles and move it around. I move it a lot in my workshop but in the unfolded position. If you decide to make this box, do at least one support leg. I tend to use my table saw now as a second bench 😅

Excellent adaptation and well explained. One issue. Your setup only allows the fence to move one way. Would it be useful to add an ability to swivel the fence?
Thank you. That option is fairly simple to do with some amendments to the back of the fence adding a hinge etc. But to be honest I have never had a need for a router fence to have the ability to swivel.
Swivel is not a requirement, you only need to be able to set the depth & width of cut. Trust me.
I am so torn between using my Ryobi and doing this on my delta table saw vs treating myself to a nice lift for Black Friday. How’s it holding up after a year?
It still works fine, use it all the time. However if I had the money I would definitely buy a proper lift, they just look and work great 😅 but I'm a toolaholic 😂

I own the rage 5 and I'm trying to realize the same device . Don't you have some bending issues with the extension due to the weight of the router table ? Because I do and only with the upper panel ... an other question : do you have some tips for ensuring the parallelism of the fence? Because mine seems to move a little bit when I block it ...

Thank you. The router box sits on the metal pipe handles and its blotted to them so that was not an issue. However I have noticed that the top chipboard panel started to sag a bit which is strange as its supported by two board inside. I guess its because its a very old board and the strength is not there anymore.

Hi. I am making one of these at the moment and wondered why on the fence you do t just bolt to the side of the saw fence, rather than box over it?
It allows me to take it off quicker that's all.
Did you screw the two fences together? (fence of the router and the fence of the saw)
No they are not screwed together. I was thinking of putting two clamps on each end of the table saw fence so the router fence would not move left to right. But been working with this setup (without the clamps) a bit now and the fence attachment I made from ply that goes over the table saw fence is so tight that the router fence doesn't move. So had no need for any fasteners yet. Although the table saw fence has got two holes in it already and initially I was thinking of using them to attach both fences together.
a tidy job mate, but that chipboard top will sag in no time, see if you can pinch some decent ply to replace it.
It shouldn't sag, I have added two storage compartments so the support is there. But yes The chip board is nasty, I just couldn't afford anything else. This costed me nothing.

I was just wondering why you didn't fit it in, keeping the metal plate as you did with the simpler version.

Almost all the wood I use is recycled (I genuinely can't remember when I bought wood last). I wish I had the same table saw, I would have liked to have done this.
Yes recycling seems to be the right way at the moment and current prices. Its a solid table saw, not the best but in this price range I don't think you can pick up anything better (new)

It folds as before so if I need to move it further I just fold it up and wheel it around. Otherwise I just push it around.

How do you get around the fence locking paddle getting in the way when you don't use the fence spacer?
To be fair so fair not had massive issues with it as usually I just set it up and off I go. However I need to change it over to the front.
My locking paddle only seems to only push down to level rather than all the way to vertically down. Do you have any idea if it is adjustable?
Eureka! Found the issue, it was set up wrong from day one. The locking nut at the back of the fence seems to have been over tightened at the factory, just slackened it a few turns and the paddle goes all the way down rather than stopping halfway and fouling on the timber 👍
