Awesome information! I live in RI. Newport is 15 minutes away. Narragansett (Towers) you show at 3:38 I pass it daily. There are more buildings with similar design and construction down the road. There is a castle still standing with a watchtower etc at 333 Ocean Rd (can’t make this stuff up) keep up the great work and thank you!

What a great video! I was in the U.S. Navy, and spent quite a bit of time in Newport R.I. It's amazing to me how many things looked familiar to me, even though I was first there in 1990. That architecture really stands the test of time.

I live right there in Newport born and raised on this island. And randomly found your video. Thank you so much for this video! A lot of those places are still there. And the slave thing. I believe it. There is a tunnel right under broadway and it leads to the ocean. I believe the tunnel used to lead out to near where battery park is today. We also have an African burial ground here. It’s sad what they did to our friends ancestors. You did put lots of work into this video and it’s appreciated and I will share this. Thank you so much for this video! There’s also a lot of creepy old Victorian houses and such. I’d love for another video.

I'm also from Newport and have always been aware of the deep rich and interesting history of the city. It's a beautiful place full of God made and made beauty. It's still very much a dichotomy of the very wealthy and very poor living feet away from each other. Though I've now lived in a few other RI towns, Newport has a unique feel for sure!

Native Newporter here. I love seeing people bring the history of Newport to life. It's astounding to me how little the people of Newport, the neighboring Middletown and Portsmouth know about our islands history. A couple important pieces of history that were left out of the video are that Newport was where Rhode Island was the first colony to declare independence from the English Crown. Also, in Newport the legislature was the last to sign the Declaration of Independence. Refusing to do so until a Bill of Rights was included.

Nice video. I was born at the former Newport Naval Base Hospital as my father was career Navy and lived most of my life in Bristol a few towns over as this is where my maternal Italian immigrant family settled. I had the opportunity many years ago to work as a Newport city tour guide as well as a tour guide at the Breakers mansion the former summer home of the Cornelius Vanderbilt family. Few people are aware that although the Breakers is no longer owned by the Vanderbilt family, upon it being handed over to the Preservation Society the Cornelius Vanderbilt family which the late Gloria and her son Anderson Cooper are from were able to maintain residential rights to a top floor apartment in the mansion that was originally the maids quarters. The descendents of those indentured Irish maids that lived in that Breakers apartment still live in Newport in the 5th Ward section of the city which is why Newport still has a very strong and proud Irish presence. For those who have never been to Newport this city should be considered for a visit as there is much to see and do there.

I recently saw photos of Hearst Castle and I'm pretty sure Hearst was an 'inheritor' not a 'builder'of the castle...I remember hearing Cary Grant's accounts of traveling the rough roads to get to the castle (in which he was a frequent guest). Sounds impossible to ship materials to the site which held an estate of such grandeur. You may have covered the Hearst Castle already, but I am seeing many ancient architecture with new eyes

I'm dutch Jared, Rhode came from the Dutch word ROOD, wich means RED. A Dutchman would say: Het rode eiland. Wich means red island, but the peoples would hear phonetically: Rhode Island..
But maybe this language all stems from Frisia, the old Frisland, FRIESLAND (Dutch) an island near Groenland (greenland) and erased from newer maps..
    Wonder why? They we're pirates/phoenicians?..
The VOC had a total wealth of 7.9 (top of my head) TRILLION in de 17th century.. That was more than the half of the world. ONE little 'country' called the Netherlands...
Compared to the days of now they would have more than google, amazon and apple combined!!
I dono, my two cents. Love your video's!

The stone medieval looking arched towers building (a casino at one time which in large part is now gone) you show a great deal of is actually on the opposite side of the bay in Narragansett. One picture has another stone building with an anchor relief carving on it next to the towers. That was indeed the United States Life Saving Service built in the early 1800's (now known as the US Coast Guard) and is now The Coast Guard House restaurant.

It helps to have grown up on Cape Cod and be a lifelong boat person and history geek. Both my Mother's and Father's families were 1630s Massachusetts settlers.

@3:35, check out the tall poles with horizontal bars, with no visible wires attached to them. Free atmospheric energy devices? Also check out the odd U.S. flag to the front left and a different U.S. flag flying atop the house at right center. Wth?

Well, when you say how it was build on things we don't do anymore, like whale oil, and shipping trade.. those things go away. All the people in CT went west after the war of 1812. there's a westerward migration in 1814-15. and that dark period, year without summer. that's how the western half of NY and PA were settled. All the place names are in french, pronounced by english/irish/swedes/dutch. Check out the kinzua reservoir. johnny cash wrote a song about that one.

I am going to take issue with your statement that, “Families like the Onassises and the Kennedys with family histories both tying back to the old China Trade and also heavily involved in later years in Newport’s lavish history. John F. and Jackie even married in Newport’s Hammersmith Farm mansion.” (13:30)
NEITHER family had a history in Newport and neither family had any involvement in the China Trade. The Kennedy wedding in 1953 took place at St. Mary's Church, not Hammersmith Farm. That is where the reception was held and only because Jackie's mother's (Janet Lee Bouvier) second husband was Hugh D. Auchincloss Jr.
Beyond that, the Kennedy family had had zero presence in Newport and the Onassis family even less.

One of the reasons the population census is so low is a lot of the homes there are now summer homes . City is JAM PACKED during the summer months.

Many people have moved here since 2020. It is still packed here more than I have ever seen in any winter and I have been here since the 1980's. If you understand what is really going on in this world, I can tell you lots of strange things going on around here.

Funny cuz our coastline isn't red. A few of the cliffs off of Jamestown have a pink hue, maybe that is what they meant. I did find a vein of pink clay at Sachuest Point which I actually was able to mold and fire. I've spent 50 years living on the Bay there but now divide my time between there and New Bedford. Two totally different cities, nonetheless historically the two main historical ports of Southeastern New England. I find New Bedford has even more amazing municipal historic architecture than Newport, and the drivers are much friendlier except for when they are not.
