And he skipped over Jamestown, Portsmouth, Middletown and Charlestown. Jamestown in particular is small but interesting. (the island between the bridges on the way out of Newport)
Biggest regret I had in RI was that I didn't have a motorcycle when I lived there, and the truck I drove was oversized so I didn't explore as much. When I went to Charlotte years later I bought a 400cc bike and absolutely do not regret it. I had a beat up old Texas Highway Dept. long bed extended cab. Not lifted or a dually or anything - but a PITA in those cities. Dual fuel so I mostly ran on LPG, which was cool.

The flag alongside the Canadian one on the old house in Newport is the Royal Flag of Scotland, known as the Lion Rampant. It dates to the early 13th century and is the personal banner of the British Royal Family in Scotland.

Being a former Bristolian growing up there in my youth, the best history exploration one can start is in the graveyards. The oldest of them reveal the shipping magnates, explorers, business titans, movie starts and public figures. As a kid I practically lived at the Haffenraffer Museum next to Linden Place. My grandparents home on Central Street was built in 1732, and had "the oldest original front door in RI". Travelling this nation I can tell you we had the best education on American History in the nation, bar none.

That house in Westerly was going for $689k and it was built in 1870. It sounds about right for the East Coast, considering there is a ton of history up in those areas. I also noticed on the Babcock house that it looks like the original section of the home may have been the smaller side on the left and the right side was likely built later on as an addition. I've seen that kind of thing happen with houses, especially around where I grew up.

But this video went through the most expensive areas of the state -- and the most desired. Easy access to the waterfront and the interstate.

You can definitely see a lot of Byzantine influence in Bristol, especially in some of the architecture and the colorful bricks they used. Don’t they also have the longest continuous running fireworks celebration in the United States? People forget or just don’t know how historical RI is and how old many of the buildings and buildings are as well as how well they are kept…. Also you can see so much English influence with how close the buildings are to each other and how narrow the streets are. $689,000 for the house in Westerly.

Newport is a tourist based seasonal town. Many of those shops will greatly reduce their hours and close after Labor day. That is why Newport was so "busy" and had all those people. The "winter" off season rents were less than $1000/mo all in for pretty nice places. The "seasonal" rates were that much a WEEK.
I lived in Middletown an entire off season, Sept-May. (you would have passed my old house when you crossed the strand from Middletown near the "strand")
Come back a month later and the whole feel of the city will be different. And much cheaper.

The scenes of Bristol look pretty much the same as they did when I left it for Hawaii. I lived in Bristol from 1995 until my departure from there for HI in 2013. It was wonderful seeing the town via this video. I called Bristol home for 18 years. I keep telling myself I need to get back to Bristol before I get too much older. I still have this craving for a couple slices of pizza strips from the (now-gone) Wood Street Bakery that can't be satisfied with just any pizza. If you're not familiar with "RI red strips", well, it's an Ocean State thing. Like clam cakes, Autocrat coffee milk, and "cabinets" from Delekta's Pharmacy up the road from Bristol in Warren, they're all RI things. One area of Bristol that was not visited in this video is an area known as Poppasquasch Point. It's a private peninsula that extends into Narragansett Bay that's home to many magnificent estates. Oscar-winning Anthony Quinn lived on Poppasquash Point during the last years of his life (he died in 2001) and he was buried on the grounds of his estate. As I mentioned, it is a private area that (at least when I lived in Bristol) was access-controlled by guards who sat by the gate into the peninsula. It's a really beautiful area, with mega-mansions, all possessing spectacular views of Narragansett Bay, Bristol Harbor, or Mount Hope Bay. While I technically wasn't supposed to be on the point, not being a resident there, (I actually lived on Mount Hope Avenue) the guards who controlled the access to the point would turn a blind eye to me and let me run out to the end of the point and back, during my marathon training days. It was on Poppasquash Point, as well as the nearby Colt State Park, and the East Bay Bike Path, where I trained and got my running miles in. Enough so, to where I qualified for the Boston Marathon six times. I have many good memories of Bristol. Along with Hawaii and Lincoln Park in Chicago, it's one of the better places I've ever called home in my life.

The Northeast has a long tradition of 'clean drinking' or going out to drink for something other than just getting smashed or rowdy. Remember, people are generally more tolerant here, and aren't ready to fight over differences as much. Bars are very common in most cities here and are almost always places to eat and drink. They didn't call them public houses for nothing.

I just have to give a huge shout-out to our (I'm in VA now) libraries in RI (I may be biased as I worked in one for years) Thanks for pointing out the one in Westerly. Most are beautiful like that. And the BIG plus is that they're all connected. As you pointed out, Westerly is at the southwest point in RI, but if you lived in the northern-most city, Woonsocket, you could order your favorite book on line and they'll deliver it up there, or to any branch near where you live.

Yes the navy had a big presence in Newport, Middletown.
However price of housing, utilities, etc is very expensive and not many decent paying jobs.
Beautiful state being run by the wrong people.

I love coastal drives, whether they're on the edge of the ocean or running along a lake shore. This episode exemplifies one of the aspects I love: the little towns that you come across, each with their own history and personality. It's especially nice to roam around early before the town wakes up and things start to get busy. At 3:30 the "Judge Roy Bean Saloon" caught my eye--I don't really associate him with the eastern seaboard. By the way, you should be careful scratching random cats, don't want to catch a fever (bad Ted Nugent pun, har har 🙂)

Putting nearly 1,000km on the rental car, I visited Belfast, Derry, Armagh, Tullamore, Kilkenny, Waterford, New Ross, and of course, Dublin. Such an amazingly beautiful countryside, the friendliest people on Earth, and a total blast. If you ever decide to do this an need an American guide, I'm always down for another trip.
