  • Join us as we continue our journey as we uncover 200 years of history on our homestead in Ireland. Speculation of a slurry pit, a courtyard or farmyard grow as we carefully uncover laid stones and cobbles buried deep in the rich top soil. Taking steps slowly, it is like we have become archaeologists on our homestead here in Ireland and taking advantage of the early Irish sun before the rain begins again. Clearing land by hand is always better when the sun is shining.
    Having already uncovered a suspected 200 year old gully from one of the old farm buildings, we will not give up until every inch of dirt is removed from whatever is hidden below the soil.
    With wild ducks flying over head and birds singing all day long, what better way can there be than spending all this time on the homestead at the back of our part renovated 100 year old farmhouse.
    Being complete beginners at farmhouse renovation and really needing a "homesteading for beginners" guide, we are taking it slowly, enjoying everything we do no matter how hard it is, to one day realise our dream of running a fully functioning homestead from our once derelict Irish Farmhouse.
    There is something for everyone on The Corner House Project channel, if you subscribed for the derelict house renovations or just for the homestead in Ireland, we will bring the smiles, you sit back and relax and let us do the work.... well, Dawn will do the work.
    Stay tuned for more updates on our renovation journey and the transformation of this historic farmhouse into a modern homestead. Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe for more content on DIY home renovations and homesteading adventures!

      The plan was so simple. Clear a path, have a raised area and grass it, or gravel, or something. Once we realised there was history under the soil though, we wouldn't have slept knowing it was there. We had to investigate more.

    The fig bottle contained syrup of figs bottles made from 1917 to 1960 . so it's over 64 years old anyway. The English bottles had a paper label on the front and embossed on the back . Usa ones were embossed front and back...
    Youve done brilliant yet again .
    Must be aching now.!
    Love Ben's shovel head that changes to a spade and back again every few seconds in the time lapse youz should patent that .
    Finally arrived home around midnight after being re routed cos of floods and road closures. Storms not even hit yet !

      We have found a couple of bottles like that. It is nice just to have them. A little bit of history if nothing else.
      The shovel head looked like it was changing but in fact it is a 2 in 1 shovel hahahaha. I never noticed when I edited so it was quite funny that you noticed. I wonder how many others spotted it.
      Oh no, that was quite a journey then, one you could have done without. We didn't have much of the storm really. The wind really got up and had some good blows and it lashed with rain but we have had worse. We were out the back today trying to get this courtyard / farmyard / slurry pit / unknown finished.

    I love the bottles! The broken piece you showed looks like the bottom of a large bottle. I follow a guy here in Maryland who does magnet fishing but also digs out the outhouses and midden pits in Baltimore city. (out houses where still being used in the 60’s in Baltimore and maybe into the 70’s). Anyway he finds old glass and pottery and tries to put them together to see what they were. What cool finds that tell the story of the house. I seem to remember being given syrup of figs as a kid, that or prune juice. You can still buy fig syrup just not in a lovely bottle…nor does it have alcohol like everything did in the early 1900’s. The syrup I have was free of alcohol, although I’m told they did rub whiskey on my gums when I was teething. You three fur babies following you was adorable.

Terrible when you think about it now isn’t it?!

    I wouldn't fret too much about the elderberry. These bushes are like weeds, they grow quite fast and are almost impossible to kill. Someone chopped ours pretty much to the ground some 15 years ago and last year we had to get professionals in to trim them back because they'd gotten over 5 m tall, beyond what I felt comfortable to climb with our ladders.

    • @thecornerhouseproject
      @thecornerhouseproject  5 місяців тому

      Wow 5m is quite a tree isn't it. We have a couple of others on the land so it wouldn't be the end of the world if it has to go but they are not as big as this one. Not sure we want a 5m one though haha.

    • @Ragnar8504
      @Ragnar8504 5 місяців тому

      @@thecornerhouseproject Yeah, they're technically considered bushes rather than trees but they can get amazingly big if you leave them. I think young branches can shoot up over 1 m per year! Obiovusly depends on the local climate though (I'm in eastern Austria, which is fairly warm and dry compared to Ireland). Much too warm recently, in fact. 25 C in early April is absolutely insane, I shudder to think how hot the summer might get. March was the warmest March recorded in history.

    I've been watching a youtube channel called Doing It Ourselves. He rebuilt and added on to a cobblestone area outside of his little cottage in France a year or so ago, and showed how to do it. You've probably got enough stones laying around to fill in the gaps. Every day there's more progress. Good job both of you.

    • @thecornerhouseproject

      Ooh lovely I will have a look at that thank you. Yes, we have loads of stones laying around! So many stones! 😂

  • @SweetOne.
    @SweetOne. 5 місяців тому +1

    Brilliant! Going forward once you have this all cleared you will be able to fill in some of the missing stone with the cobbles you uncovered. No more sinking into the muck every time it rains and you need to go back there. I can see the difference already in the drainage and water run off. It's going to make repairing the outbuildings so much easier and It's going to be a beautiful garden courtyard to sit in and have a bar b que. I can't wait to see the rest uncovered.
    I'm a bit surprised that you haven't found any millstones or stone mushrooms however; those broken stones with the rounded tops could be broken mushroom stones. they were used (some places still use them) to elevate storage sheds for feed and grains, shaped like a mushroom to stop mice from being able to climb into the food storage buildings, small buildings would have 4 or 5 mushrooms and larger buildings would have 9 or more. There are still many places on your property where they may have moved some. If you don't find any then a farmer probably took them to use on his working farm.
    The staddle stone is a two-piece, mushroom-shaped garden element that dates back to the 16th century. Carved from local stone, they were used in farms across England and Northern Spain to support agricultural buildings. Keeping granaries and haystacks off the ground allowed air circulation, preventing rot.
    Staddle stones have a long agricultural history in Europe as a clever way to support granaries, hay ricks, and beehives. Once elevated, the stones prevented the intrusion of mice and other critters from the edible goods and grains above. This structure, while serving an important function historically, now makes for a chic garden ornament that can be placed in a garden as a focal point or to mark property lines or used to flank an entranceway.
    The Sun will come out... Just not this week 😜 Now that I have though about the staddle stones they make perfect sense for your property for building a gazebo on... way in the future, You crazy kids have lots to do already 😘😘 another rabbit hole to look into later 😇🥰
    I'm off to look at the thumbnail 🤣🤣 Dawn is always Beautiful! 😍

      Oh my goodness yes, it is going to make such a difference to how we can move around out there now! It’s going to take a little repairing and a bit of creative licence with putting it back together again, but like you say we have loads of spares! I feel like the rest of that area is probably the same floor but….I’m not sure we can go through anymore digging just yet! 🤣
      No, no staddle stones…but we do have a staddle stone ourselves anyway. We bought it all the way from England with us because we love it so much and I think we’ve had it about 19 years now! lol It lives outside the front of the house by the front door 😍
      Haha yes, no signing us up for new jobs just yet, we need to recover from this one first! 🫠🥱

    My grandmother told me, years ago kitchen furniture was stood on glass, or pottery blocks,to raise it out of the water, from constant floor washing and scrubbing, to protect furniture. I wonder if that is what you found.

      Hi Anne, thank you for watching and commenting. Well after a while we found another bit of pottery which is part of an old kettle, then a bit of plate, then some bottles, so your guess is as good as ours as to what we found. Sometimes it is a lump which is obvious, other bits we have no idea. A couple have a nice pattern on though.

    The writing you cannot work out on the piece of glass.... have you tried taking a brass rubbing off of it, sometimes the crayon/pencil is much clearer on a piece of paper put over the writing - you might then be able to research the name? Think the 'patio' will look lovely. You will spend the summer picking up an odd bit of stone and seeing if it will fill one of the holes to complete it all again. Looking forward to seeing if you finish or not. Have a lovely weekend

    Love all your little bottles Dawn, I found quite a few when digging the piggery. The green one though and green coloured glass is quite unusual.
    Peaches, Alan and Steve are having a ball! Our black ladies often pop in to see the cows in our neighbour barn, so no doubt your gang will be very excited to see your cows next door.
    I love the two person dig method, ingenious, not long now 💪

      They’re really cute aren’t they? I do like old bottles, I’ve found a few that would have little corks I would think too. Anything old and I’m excited! Yes! The green one I was really excited about, it’s a shame we didn’t find that one intact.
      Aww I know the cats absolutely love being out, they’ve explored everywhere they possibly can. Steve and Alan came down the bottom of the land when we did the barrows, they were a bit nervous about that as they hadn’t been down there yet, can’t wait for them to explore it all. So many trees to climb! Haha oh you saying about the cows…they did. Wander up that way and then when they saw the cows they made a swift run back home! Haha. I’m sure once they grow into their bolshy normal cat behaviour they’ll be paying them a visit though!.
      I love your two black ladies, clementine is beautifully chubby ❤️
      Two person dig worked really well, made it go a little quicker too…today’s digging was a bit harder with the rain though, that and we’re broken now 🤣

    As I comment here there are 155 comments on the video. The channel is getting serious interest now. Not sure u will get much done this weekend as there is a storm just hitting now. When u get the rest of the clearing done u might get some focus on a veg patch with all the rich soil u have. I got the gates left in for galvanising yesterday and got some in fill boards as well. The week after next it will be time to get the gates up. At 200kilos each the wee digger we have will come in handy.

    Ink jar or ink well, imperfections are called straw markers. It was formed with a hot steel press that developed a crack or a mark that the older it was or the more it was used … the mark became larger and larger until it could not be used any longer be used. Straw was not used to form these jars or glasses but it was called a straw mark. But straw was used in other glass making. That story is for another day. Lol. It was fun to see you racing (for certain definitions of "racing") through that patch. You're on the sweet side of the geometric progression now- every strip you clear, the area reaming to be cleared gets smaller at a faster & faster rate. (My money is also on "slurry" pit; or some more general but similarly sophisticated system for adding effluent to, & then draining, the underside of a manure pile.)
    Also fun to see the cats roaming around having fun on their outdoor domain & jungle gym, like little furry ginger chaos agents.

      Yes, we had a really good couple of days getting rid of the thick soil and today mud. Hopefully Mondays video will reveal more.
      We still can't see the mud for the trees at the moment to really understand what we are possibly looking at. I am sure there is bedrock there so I am not sure about a pit, but define pit. I am picturing a four walled thing about 8ft deep. We will see.

    What an awesome job you both are doing and its really paying big dividends! Loved seeing the progress of the stones in the yard being uncovered even if there is still a layer of mud on top of the hardscape. I wasn't sure about the "drizzle" until I had a closeup and realized that it really was raining! Ben, the tree is enormous and it made me wonder if you will try to remove it? Have you decided what to do with it? You are so brave to allow the kitty's to be outside with you. My guys aren't ever out and truly have never shown any interest in venturing outside of the house even when the weather is good never mind when it's raining! Yeah the drizzle is fine on the soil but when it rains it turns into a mud bath. Like today. Drastic measures were taken. You will see Monday :-)
      The cats love it so much. They surprised us as we just carried on making noise an it didn't bother them at all. We have always had cats which go out. We thought Peaches would stay in but she is the worst for going on adventures already.
      The massive base will probably stay there until it falls over. Just the small piece we stood on it's side weighed so much. I can't imagine how heavy a big bit will be. The actual fallen trunk will go at some point but will get someone with experience for chopping that up as it it a monster.

      Hi James, thanks for watching and commenting.
      A digger seems a great idea but at the point we are at now it wouldn't have been any use as bedrock is sticking out of the ground, stones are between the bedrock, levels are god knows where. That along with the soggy ground someone would have turned up, turned around and left lol. It has been long work without using a digger but in a controlled way and best of all it is all free :-) We like free.
      We are well thanks :-) Have a really nice weekend and thanks again :-)

    Hi Dawn and Ben, seeing the puddytats having their first free exploration of their domain put a smile on me, they have no fear:) Good also to see the finish line in sight for the main excavation. I Hope Kathleen makes a detour around your way, if not, then you should both take it as a sign to take a little break until she passes x

      Hi Ellen. I think (fingers crossed) storm Kathleen is going to bypass us, we still have a lot of rain forecast for the next couple of days but the storm conditions I don’t think we will get. We might have a little break from it if does rain a lot though!
      Aww puddytats! They had such a good time outside, now they just want to be out the whole time! Hahaha.x

      I also have 2 cats , One is a Ginger the same as yours. The 2nd is about an 18 months old female that was abused and is terrified of being outside. Sinbad is the male cat's name and he would kill any and everything he could catch. I only let Sinbad out in the Winter months due to the Birds and poison Snakes . A Copperhead killed my neighbor's Cat. I used to save a lot of Birds, mostly babies.. It will help the Birds a lot if you would let the cats out later in the day as the babies are coaxed out of the nest by the parents early in the day and it takes a while for the parents to hide them.. You are lucky to not have Snakes there.

    The kitties are having a blast outside! I was sitting here cracking up, you calling him Steve. I think it's great when people name their cats human names, and also hilarious lol do you guys have children that live at home? I think you said your daughter was out there a couple of times with the cats on a leash? Maybe I heard wrong? You guys are really digging everything out great, how much longer do you think it will take you to get this flat? And it was so cute when the cat started following you ❤ now you probably won't be able to keep them inside lol love the video, much love from Oklahoma USA Jackie 🇺🇸💖

      Good evening Jackie 😘Aww they really were, today not so much as Steve ran up a tree to run from a dog and got stuck in the tree! ….ladder out to rescue him haha! We’ve had lots of cats/animals over the years and always called them odd names but Steve has got to be the best name for a cat ever! We had two Guinea pigs before moving over that my daughter named Danny and Devito! Yes we have our 19 year old son living with us here and we also have a 27 year old daughter too, who wanted to stay in England.
      Well, today we went out with very high hopes of clearing the last patch but sadly we fell short of getting that done. It had rained all of last night and wow it made the soil turn to mud and trying to dig sticky, heavy mud was not easy, so fingers crossed for tomorrow now…obviously depending on the weather!
      It was really lovely having the cats out there with us, but I do find them very distracting as I just want to watch them play! Haha you’re right too, they don’t like being indoors now!

      @thecornerhouseproject  5 місяців тому

      Yeah we think that’s what happened too, especially as we dig in line with the window it has a different smell to the soil outside the door! Oh it really has been some heavy work, but so pleased with how it has all gone. 😊

    Really enjoying your hard work. can I ask, what was the make and model of the hedge trimmer you used? It seemed quite good. Good luck with the end of the dig. The line of barrows remind me of a gag about a Irish builder long since gone to his rest. Story was he drove a lorry load of sand in the front gate, out the back and around again getting paid each time intil there was grass growing on it...
