I find it interesting that the “Syn Godzilli” poster depicts a creepy looking Minilla that looks like it’s spitting up blood bubbles. The entire thing basically feels like someone predicted shin Godzilla and Kamata kun long before they where made. Ether that or they based this face on Mothra’s larvae and the artist never saw the movie but whatever
@@restionSerpentine I legit would love to see the Gargantuas in a monsterverse movie. :D but they have a weird, even for 1960s monster movies backstory: their DNA is actually HUMAN, albeit mutated. which is why they're so... weird in behavior. They're like giant toddlers who need parents, more than traditional monsters. that's guaranteed to make people feel things, even in a movie with Kong. Redoing the Gargantuas to be more like Kong... is possible. they seem to want to play with the idea of maybe Kong's not REALLY the last of his kind... maybe... possibly... Hmm... It'd kinda make it a new character though. since the Gargantuas had as part of their origin story the radiation of HIROSHIMA.
I legitimately love the Polish and Swedish posters for the original film. They both capture such distinct styles and are very appealing but in different ways. EDIT: Also "UP-SET STOM-ACH DI-ARR-HOE-A" is now stuck in my head, so thanks for that I guess.
The Spanish 1954 poster is actually one of my favorites. Even if Godzilla seems to be made out of mud, I think it is meant to show that he is a radiated creature therefore he is going to look messed up.
Desghidorah is best variant of Ghidorah. :D Has the interesting twist in that Mothra COULDN'T kill him! the Elias had to use the Seal relic to trap Desghidorah for another thousand years or so.
One thing I give the Italian dubs credit for is for using different names to differentiate the three generations of Mothra in the Showa timeline. The only one actually called "Mothra" is the larva in GTTHM and GVSM, while the adult in GVM is called Watang and the larva in DOM is called Polluk.
2:53 I think this poster is supposed to represent Manila in the womb of the egg and breathing out oxygen while also bubbles of blood because he’s technically was incubating inside of an egg filled with radiation poisoning cause he’s the son of Godzilla.
That poster is not Swedish. I think it's actually the Danish poster with the title translating as "The king of beasts" or something. The actual Swedish poster "Godzilla - monstret från havet" is in black and red with the portrait photo of the two main actors on the foreground. This was a common practice in Swedish movie posters to feature the portrait photos of the lead actors on the foreground. The background is a solid red flame and Godzilla has his correct radioactive breath appearing as a white beam. His face looks off like many foreign depictions but still closer to the movie.
The reason why polish godzilla posters are “WEIRD” is because back in the day, Poland had real artist that makes paintings like scream, the meaning on the posters was that you figure out your self what is means, I’m also related to polish so that’s how I know
12:27 Have to say, the skull-head look for G is pretty effective there. He'd be about a thousand times scarier with that design. The kangaroo foot, not so much. Polish poster art is best poster art. Also, I don't what pleases me more - the fact that there are multiple uploads of the original Pepto commercial, or the fact that some glorious madman did a version of it using stop-motion Lego models.
Regarding kaiju posters featuring "Frankenstein" in the title: I was watching Toho's Frankenstein duology today (coincidentally), and since there wasn't a commentary track for War of the Gargantuas, I decided to pull out Kalat's overview of the Godzilla series and check the appropriate chapter (#12, if I recall, "Monsters, Inc.") While doing so, I re-discovered his theory that, based on when this trend started, "War of the Gargantuas" seems to be ground zero -- because while most edits and dubs of the film avoid the confusion of Toho's intention to make this a verrrrrry loose sequel to FvsBaragon (aka Frankenstein Conquers the World), the German title did try to acknowledge the connection by combining the two titles. From that point on, "Frankenstein" was used as a marketing tool in Germany for many kaiju films, whether Toho or elsewhere. This theory also traces the inclusion of King Kong in foreign market retitles, to King Kong Escapes a year or two later, with the name being attached to mechanical or semi-mechanical creatures (as with Mechani-Kong). Thus Gigan in Germany was named Kong on the posters for both of his Showa Era films!
Few things; one I'd never thought I ever hear someone say poor creature while talking about Ghidorah. And 2nd; the world trade center poster is interesting because if that poster was made in 2001 then it would've been pulled off the walls. And Rodan had the cert X logo as well btw. Btw the Godzilla poster at 12:37 looks like someone drew Godzilla as a umibōzu.
When u discussed how Godzilla looked off in the Japanese poster for Godzilla vs Megalon, they actually just used his design from Godzilla vs the Sea Monster in 1966
The 2 "Destroy All Monsters" posters featuring King Kong were my absolute favorites! I'm thinking about getting them blown up & put in frames as room décor.
a few days ago my mom gave me this godzilla mystery box. it was from new zealand. when i opened it there where godzilla mouse pad godzilla cards and godzilla stickers. some of the stickers had some of these posters.
1:25- it's like in modern sequels/reboots where they just ake the title of the original, and add "the" to the beginning, such as "The Batman" and "The Predator"
I grew up with Godzilla On Monster Island as the movie's name (even after I learned it was made in Japan). So seeing it called Godzilla vs Gigan is weird for me. Proper name or not.
Re the Astro-Monster (Monster X) date: loosely speaking the year is supposed to be 19xx, in other words some time in our future, but not specific (unlike Destroy All Monsters which is explicitly set in the 1990s, and which this poster may be inadvertently referencing since the plots of those two films are kind of similar.)
Well the reason why kong is on the Italian posters for destroy all monsters is because in an early draft of destroy all monsters king kong was going to be in the film but was cut to legal reasons
Some of the posters here look like they've too-obviously cribbed elements from other posters. The 'Invasion Planet X' variants make me think of The Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, with the raised road sweeping round. The Italian 'Heirs of King Kong' and American Godzilla vs. Megalon posters look like they've swiped different bits from the King Kong 1976 poster. A couple of these I kinda like. The 'Anno 2000' poster with the weird lizard-ape-rooster monster has a bit of skill behind it, and the creature design is just the right amount of kookiness to be likeable. I think the variant you showed for a second has a much better composition though. The polish 1954 poster is oddly calming, and the polish Son of Godzilla poster is... unique. Overall though? The whole lineup kind of saddens me. It's a kind of showcase of how little was thought of these movies, just jamming in any old roughly-painted green reptilian monster, or worse: complete non-sequitur references to King Kong or Frankenstein. "It's just some dopey rubber monster flick, who cares?" And fair enough, these films, with the possible exception of the original, aren't exactly Citizen Kane. But still.
Paper Finz, ya gotta understand that this was the woodstalk era. Lots of doobies being passed around. That explains all the crap going on with these crazy posters.
Oh man, what a great video! Love to see the variations of posters from around the world, and some of them leave me with question: What author (or author's) got in mind when they make some of these? One of them for me is polish poster of" Invasion of Astro-Monster" ! The whole premise of Polish school of posters was that you have an artist vision of movie closed in one made image (Except for the Rodan's poster, even if title indicates that Rodan is a "Bird of death", so the Tyrannosaurs was just for the suspense or rather giggles). So what I see on poster of polish "IoAM" is simply the invasion that is in the title. Red colour resembles the borders of Poland, and the weird black shapes behind represents the incoming danger from out of this world. White shapes that make this "face of grumpy penguin" looks little bit like a Godzilla and Rodan, that are "defenders of earth", also when i see it now the red shape can be a pile of blood, because when you rotate the picture, the black shapes start reminds me of Ghidorah's body (mainly wings) but decapitated (Morbid, I know, but then "Son of Godzilla" poster got Minilla with a skullface... Probably to warn people how ugly he is in the movie). Plus the colours looks very close to the clothes that Xiliens are wearing. Well that's just a what it came to my mind when I really look into it to long. Waiting for another videos like this and I wonder what will be your reaction to polish Godzilla vs Hedorah poster!
Now this might sound crazy but I kind of want to see that creature from the Italian invasion of astro-monster poster as a new monster in the monsterverse I even came up with two good names for it Fur lizard and apelizerd
