The "Kong inside a robot suit" factoid is apparently just a myth. All they did was change Jet Jaguar and Mechagodzilla's names to Kong and nothing else.

I always thought that the weird tentacle-monster posters for _Mothra vs. Godzilla_ would actually have made pretty decent, if way off model, posters for _Godzilla vs. Biollante_ so many decades later.
Not gonna lie, the idea of keeping the monsters a secret is actually a pretty cool way to get audiences curious. I bet it was an awesome surprise going to the cinema and seeing Godzilla fight a brand new monster you'd never seen before. Of course, it would never work these days due to pretty much everything being leaked onto the internet, but still.
This reminds me of the posters that were made for Mothra's first film. How they portrayed her as this evil looking bug with sharp teeth and how it showed a guy running away from her.
Since "Ebirah: Horror of the deep"/"Godzilla VS The Sea Monster" was meant to star Kong instead of Godzilla, the bigfoot is probably meant to be Kong. That actually makes ( some ) sense.....
@@PaperFinz My favorite is the one for son of Godzilla. I've been trying to find out why the Polish ones are the way they are. But I can't find an answer.
I'll always remember the Godzilla vs The Thing poster. I first saw it on a Godzilla website during the time Sony and Tristar had distribution rights to the series following the 98 movie's release. They had all the Godzilla movies released at the time in order on the site, but they were all listed with their American titles. I hadn't seen Mothra vs Godzilla yet, so seeing this poster got me excited because yea it got me. I was like" What is The Thing? I wanna see Godzilla fight whatever this thing is." Granted the page on Mothra vs Godzilla had promotional pictures with Mothra, but I thought maybe she was in it along with The Thing, not realizing they are calling her the thing. Of course, years later, I would get Mothra vs Godzilla and learn that it was just America's way of promoting the film. But yea I fell for that poster as a kid. I still really like that poster tho and Mothra vs Godzilla is one of my favorite Godzilla movies lol.
Meanwhile, "The Return of Godzilla" poster sort of makes sense (minus the train) since the Ebirah film was originally supposed to be Toho's next Kong film!
The WATANG poster is by far my favorite one in this vid because of the design of the odd tentacled monster. Looks very alien and something that would make a cool monster for Godzilla to save the world from "Godzilla 2000" style.

a small correction on the Italian version of "terror of mechagodzilla", I saw the movie and I don't remember King Kong piloting mechagodzilla, instead I remember Titanosaurus being renamed "Titano-Kong"
It is weird that King Kong was in the Ebirah posters, since it was going to be a movie, officially called “Operation Robin Crusoe: King Kong vs. Ebirah.” I would have loved to see that. Apparently that word, “Watang!” is another word for tree trunks, but this movie is trying to sell its audience on the fact that “Godzilla vs. the Thing” had an empire by that title (which obviously isn’t in the movie.
Love how the Italian and German posters for King Kong vs. Godzilla only credit three actors from the movie and it's the three actors added to the movie in the US version though the German poster misspells Michael Keith's name. Even more insulting the German poster credits direction to the guy who directed the US insert scenes totally removing Ishiro Honda's name from the poster. And then the Italian poster to Destroy All Monsters , I don't remember there being any western actors by the name of Gary Graham or Kenny Lousen in that movie and Andrew Hughes (who played the minor part of Dr. Stevenson) is credited as lead actor. And the Italian poster for Terror of MechaGodzilla credits some more western actors that don't appear in the movie like "Harris Bartley" and "Alan Baker" and "Mood Stanley"? They still credit the three actual Japanese stars to the movie but shove in all these not featured Western names.
I have to say, it speaks volumes to what a monument the original King Kong was, that movies were still trying to piggyback off of its success 20 or 30 years later. That’s as if the latest Avengers movie poster had Brad Pitt’s Achilles and Mel Gibson’s William Wallace shoehorned in there to spark interest.
@8:30 the tentacle monster is a reference to shuma-gorath from marvel comics whom is based on the works of h.p Lovecraft. That's said the thing in the center is an eye
The 1st movie poster shown really should have had mechaGodzilla tower over Godzilla. And I'm pretty sure there were 2 Rodans depending on which 3 pronunciation you choose in that poster. If you don't believe me on the 3 pronunciations of the name Rodan then please watch the American Dubbed version of Rodan. But Rodan was still popular and was most likely a callback to the Rodan film where there were two of them and if you look closely they are over top of an active volcanoe.
If you look at the cover at 5:42, they just drew a new head for Kong on top of the old head (as this image came from a still from the movie). But if you look closely, you can see the lips of Kong’s original head as they are still visible and facing the building (actually facing Godzilla in the original image).
To be fair, some Kongs (including the current one) do look like big hairy sasquatch -- and that's so true for the Toho Kong, that his vG suit often gets credited as left over from the Toho film "Half-human" (about a Bigfoot creature.)
The real reason why Kong was replaced with Godzilla was because the company that Toho got the permission to use Kong from did not like the movie, so King Kong was replaced with Godzilla and Toho ended up making King Kong Escapes instead.
That AIP GODZILLA VS. THE THING poster is one of the coolest pieces of promotional art in the history of cinema. Yes, it's absolutely false advertising. But in terms of hype, it doesn't get better than a tentacled monster "censored" because it's just too terrifying to show. And in fairness, an awful lot of US filmgoers at the time had probably never seen nor heard of Mothra anyway, so it makes perfect sense to hype Godzilla's foe up as something all-new and terrifying.
I think the 1961 Mothra movie was distributed in the US 2 years before Mothra vs Godzilla came, but even that poster made Mothra looked terrifying 💀 Then again, back then Japanese Kaiju flicks were seen as low quality B movies, so imagine not a whole lot of people saw the film prior.

Huh, I think the poster at 6:06 or so, "The Return of King Kong" must have been the image I saw in this old documentary about monster movies almost 3 decades ago. Always struck in hindsight weird that they had a smaller "T-Rex" apparently shooting out fire out of its mouth and didn't think it had that much to do with Godzilla, just a rexie doin' that on bigger Kong. Guess that tells how well those posters worked. The documentary also had remarking how Kong is the American smart ape and Godzilla the moronic Japanese lizard. Either way, an old mystery that I didn't think that much about solved.
