      Dude not every car'd equipment lasts the same. Im working on an 05 xa with 140k miles and the ac system is not functioning at idle unless you rev the engine, on a normal mag clutch I could watch to see if the ac is being engaged when told but now I have to dig into the wiring and hope to find some schematics on Google because I can't afford $2k for tech info.

      @@fjb666 have you found out about the mag clutch i did mine with an echo compressor with lines and when i hook up the control valve wiring to the clutch it engages all the time even when not using ac.

    • @fjb666
      @fjb666 2 роки тому +3

      @@angelodonate8272 Without service data I would have to guess a wiring difference. What voltages do you get at control valve and do they change depending on if the ac button is on or not? And make sure to test with vent mode on face, defrost mode will turn compressor on.
      You may need to figure out what voltage/signal is being sent down control line compared to what the echo compressor needs to turn off/on. One could be simple on/off voltage or ground control and other could be pwm or other modulated signal control.

    I bought a 2006 XB with 91k about 2.5 years ago. I replaced a blown head and the ac compressor with a new one from eBay. The system and car ran well. I put around 95k more doing rideshare. Recently, the AC compressor started to turn off on acceleration. Sometimes is came back on. I could put it into neutral, then click on and off switch it would engage ac compressor. I assumed I just wore out that compressor, replaced it with a new one. Same issues. Turned off during acceleration. Decided to try to install a new compressor with a clutch from a 2001 Echo, after reading comments and ideas. I ordered on on eBay $130. The compressor bolts on the same. The hose from the expansion valve to compressor from the Echo fits correctly. The hose from the condenser to the compressor is different. The Echo hose fits compressor but does not connect properly to the XB condenser. I got two used hoses at junkyard for $10 each xb and echo. We used the compressor fitting from the Echo, and the condenser fitting from an XB hose. The hose length was the same as Echo one. AAPAK in phx made new hose $50. The belt is shorter. I installed the one from Echo - Napa Micro V 25-040465 4pk118. Electrical - I did not want to cut my scion wires nor the new compressor, in case I needed to uninstall or go back. So I made a connector from junk yard car pigtails. I clipped the male connector from an XB compressor (this end will clip to original XB car wire), then clipped a female connector from the Echo car wire (this end will clip into new Echo type compressor). I connected the Blue wire from XB connector to the Red wire in the Echo to create the connector. Both ends clipped just fine. I did normal evac, expansion valve, charge, etc. I am no expert but it seems to be working, It's been about a about a week. Cools good and no issues so far. I hope it lasts. Hope this helps someone.

    I have 290K on my 05 xb. It is used as a second car now. Back in the day, it was mostly highway miles. Other than normal maintenance items, the only problem I ever had with the car was a fan blower replaced a year ago, and the trunk lid handle came off when I yanked it. That said, my ac stopped blowing cold air last summer. I put some Freon in it and it lasted about a week or two. After seeing the video with your bad experience, I am wondering if this ac compressor or system is to tricky to diagnose, and that maybe I should consider taking it to the dealer or an AC specialty shop that might have more experience with this Scion. Doing this would usually be my last choice for normal AC repair work, but WOW, after seeing your video I now hesitate to take this to my usual mechanic. Thanks for the heads up.

    My '06 xB has 120k miles on it and I have blown 4 compressors. This is a known problem, and a notorious issue with the gen1 xB. Congrats to those who have never had to replace their compressor. You got lucky. First one I replaced with a Denso. After it failed, went with 2 other ones. It's broken now for like 2 years cuz I just haven't worked on it though I have all the parts to do so. Each compressor seemed to last about 3 years before burning out. Long story short, the cabin air volume is too much for a compressor turned by an engine of this size. It's just under designed for Southern states in the USA where the AC lives on HIGH if the engine is running. Somewhat of a different story in northern states with lower temps. It's a fluid dynamics thing. Sometime I will get around to installing the new parts, but damn... it's hot in the summer.

    You have to flush the lines as I am doing my ac on my box the compressor had metal bits inside so I’m swapping the condenser and flushing everything. So if the compressor activates does it have any audible click or anything to indicate it’s activated? Or do you just feel the air while charging to ensure it’s working.

    I have a 2004 XB with 315,500 miles, just 2 weeks ago my AC started acting up, cooling when driving but not when at a stop or just parked with AC fully blast. Just yesterday I replace the fan because it was only running I’m at lower speed but the high wasn’t kicking in. Although is cooling much better when driving one you come to a full stop it only blows arm air. So I started to guess that probably one the same issues you mentioned on this video is what’s happening to mine also. Having my mechanic/ ac tech take a look at it.
    Great video, hope you were able to resolve the issue. Thank you for sharing.

    My xB has 318 thousand miles on it's original AC compressor lmao.
    Reman compressors, or reman ANYTHING is often trash unless you buy DENSO. ...I'd sooner buy an "untested" used one from ebay or a junkyard before I trust some crap from the local parts store.
    Just because it's different doesn't necessarily make it bad. Heck, I've seen way more locked up compressor clutch bearings than actual compressors lock up. And it sounds like your problem was with a hose anyway, so maybe the original compressor was fine? Maybe the hose was damaged in a crash? Certainly the car looks like it's been through a pinball machine! haha.

    • @teravolt6113

      A delaminated hose can silently kill a comp. Not enough oil flowing back. Really difficult to diagnose especially with a variable displacement compressor.
      The trouble behind repeat AC issues/compressor seizures is both due to inept users letting the system work (which with clutchless compressors equates to turning the engine on) with a low charge and idiot workshops who don't understand how to properly repair systems and take as many shortcuts as they can even when the customer isn't asking for a cheap repair. You've likely been regularly servicing your AC and keeping the refrigerant charge optimal. I''ve been running my original compressor for 17 years, though not a Scion (the only thing in common with a Scion xB is the Denso TXV), not clutchless and less than half the mileage. I had to fix a few leaks and to endure the misdeeds of workshop idiots who even got so far as leaving a leaking schrader in place and damaging the liquid line.

    Wait so you’re saying it’s direct drive and there’s no clutch on the OEM compressor? That’s strange because my toyota bB which is the jdm version of the xB clearlyhas a clutch that grabs on when I turn the ac on. I can feel it in the power and sometimes see it a little in the idle rpm. Strange

      @@connorlearmonth665 I Google Toyota BB compressor and lots of SCSA08C compressors pop out. The xA is an export version of another JDM known as Toyota Ist and this one has a clutchless too. Maybe they just did away with the clutchless design later on and reverted to the old tried and tested Denso scroll featured on the first gen Vitz for some reason (clutchless are really vulnerable to running with no charge)

    • @connorlearmonth665
      @connorlearmonth665 4 роки тому +1

      TeraVolt my bB is a 2000 model, so you’re saying they originally had a clutch and then tried to save money by going clutchless on later models? I wonder if all xBs are the same then.

    • @teravolt6113
      @teravolt6113 4 роки тому +2

      @@connorlearmonth665 Really a matter of NVH (noise vibration harshness), not money. The clutch on the fixed displacement scroll needs to cycle on and off to stop the evaporator from freezing up, more so when the engine is revved about, even though the TXV will adjust the flow as the evaporator cools down so to make it cycle less often compared to the typical old American car cycling clutch orifice tube system. This can get really annoying on a minicar with a low displacement engine, not a concern on a muscle car instead. The clutchless comp, like any variable displacement comp, never cycles on and off. Just goes low displacement once the evaporator is cold enough, so no more "bumps" while riding about. However the clutchless is easily damaged whenever the system experiences a serious refrigerant leak. The clutch on the scroll just kicks out for good once refrigerant pressure is low enough, instead. The later iQ used a clutch equipped variable displacement piston design. How do they keep the "bump" from happening whenever AC is turned on, on that one? They use a refrigerant flow sensor to ramp up piston displacement slowly. So while it has a clutch and a low displacement engine, compressor engagement torque stops being a NVH concern. And the clutch allows to save the compressor when refrigerant is lost.

      It's no POS actually. A lot of cars have this kind of compressor nowadays. The real concern is that if you ever have a leak you should fix it ASAP. Especially, if you have a sudden severe leak (traffic accident that results in a pierced condenser) you have to turn the engine off and have the car towed to someone who will fix everything up and seal the system again. Driving it even with AC off results in the compressor delubricating itself and overheating since there's no refrigerant to cool it down and carry lube across the system. Normally, in a fully functional system, when you have AC OFF the solenoid runs it a short while from time to time to flow some refrigerant to the compressor, that way the evaporator doesn't freeze up even if you have the blower off and the compressor is cooled down and lubed (otherwise, when the solenoid isn't turning it on, it runs on "short circuit"; it doesn't flow anything through the system; it only flows some lube through the compressor casing). That's the catch with these compressors. Either find a way to decouple the pulley from the shaft, or have someone tow the car. If you don't, it will seize up.
