The decrease of mosquitoes is because of the hummingbirds. The hummingbird numbers increase around july and each bird consumes at least 13,000 mosquitoes a day.
Where you noticed mosquitos in Minnesota there was standing stagnant water. Aka baby mosquito breading grounds. Avoid camping near this or things (tires) that can collect and hold stagnant water. And where wind or air movement is blocked.
I always wondered but never ask the lock masters how they got the first set of barges through the locks without the tug, now I know! Also,( I knew you would appreciate this Matt) I just got done paddling the 231 mile Lake Oahe on the Missouri River ( just a tad bigger than Lake Winne on the Mississippi) and received a two mile portage to a down river campground and put in. After we loaded my 17 ft. 75 lb canoe into the back of this persons truck with trailer hitch extension, he pulled out a cooler with ice cold micro brews in it and exclaimed “ help yourself to as many as you want, if you paddled this lake and lived to tell about it, you deserve it!” After my 4th, or was it 5th IPA, I couldn’t even remember the lake he was talking about!”🤪
After the confluence of the Missouri there are no more locks and the river is constrained by levees everywhere. The channel is smaller as a result and barge traffic creates tight lanes.
The reason you are not being offered coffee and Danish and cold beer is because you angered the River Karma gods by refusing FREE shrimp offered by a fellow sailor ( All gifts must be graciously accepted..... And then you can discreetly feed the birds with the leftover shrimp when no one is looking)
Nice paddle and helpful lock. And the way the people of Clinton, Iowa, celebrated your staying with them was super! Fireworks for Masotaters! Can't ask for more than that. Paddle on! Tortoise
Am loving your videos but was disappointed that you didn't include a shot of the Dutch windmill in Fulton, Ill. (my home town) just across the river from Clinton. I'm looking forward to the rest of this series so keep up the good work!
The warnings about the barges is because they can be quiet and sneak up behind you if you are not paying attention. As you have seen, at least one of them was moving along at a pretty good pace. If you get to close to the side of them you can get pulled up against it causing you to tip over and get sucked underneath it surely drowning. A hazard that is easily overlooked. Never get in between a barge and the shoreline if the barge is anywhere near the shore. As long as you keep your distance and pay attention, you will be fine.
That barge comment, about dodging vs lock times. I’ve been wondering how such a large, slow moving ship would be a threat. That river is so crazy wide.
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes theoretically, just as a thought experiment, if it was a perfectly clear and calm full moon night, could you paddle at night without the use of navigation lights or any special rules?
you need to build a robot out of mercury dredged from the mud to paddle for you, bill brasky opens cans with his eyelashes so it may be possible and beneficent
Your doing great at locks lately. Fun trying the water release, but anti climatic it would have been fun shooting out of the lock. Nice taters Tuesday, taters is getting more comfortable on 📸 . Paddle on!
PCT I wrote up on my website. Florida was the first time I’d tried the video / UA-cam thing. Now I wish I had videos of the pct of course but at the time there were death threats over people hiking due to Covid. And I didn’t care for what I viewed as standard thru hiker videos
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes Oh yes. Now it makes sense. Hikers were considered death spreaders. Many good vloggers got the threatened and had to go dark.

A REAL TATAR TUESDAY!! We heard multiple complete sentences today instead of sporadic giggling. Well done!
Since Jen has taken over the radio duties I have noticed y’all are going straight through the locks! Just saying! Paddle On!
Thanks. ✌🏻👊🏼
You folks would have really liked to see Clinton back in its heydays, pre 1980s. the town was flush with jobs, restaurants, clubs, and little stores.

You would have to be blind, to not notice that windmill, and I would think curiosity would steer you to it?
Anybody know if the walkway on the Clinton side is fixed?? Heard it got damaged last year with the flood

I think the loud sound you heard at night might be beavers their territorial and they'll slap the water with their tails

We didn't have a ton of mosquitos because it had been so dry here for weeks before that
Por-tage sounds a bit like “porridge”
The :( with the no nachos made me laugh out loud. I love your edits.
Awesome video. I think this is your most interesting trip thus far
It is quite different from the average thru hike
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes it keeps getting better. Will hate to see this end.
:) Plus side barring misadventure we should have 70+ episodes

Love the Vids- good humor Matt \ jen
Thanks!
Phew patriots, you made it!! Enjoy, rest know your doing a fab job on the water and displaying our country from a 🛶
Even though the back water channel had you out of the canoe- I’d bet the walking was a nice break from sitting. Thank you again for a great video.
Liked the fireworks. Maybe you can write a book called Operators of the Locks.

Hey Y'all ! Another good river day !
What a lovely Tators & turtles 🐢 Tuesday!

We need someone to turn on all the valves instead of just one. For science and all
5:06 yo Matt. You do know that it is permissible for you to paddle while Jen videos, well at least on Tater Tuesdays! 😜
7:02 now this “paddle wheeler” on the other hand…
Am I missing it or did you not vlog your PCT hike?
I was surprised to hear that his earlier hikes weren't recorded. Or at least I thought I heard that.

😎✌
How long does it take to go through a lock?
If there is no wait it’s about 10-15 minutes. Little longer for the big ones maybe
Myrtle the Turtle.
What about Yertle the Turtle? Even more famous.
