Headwaters of the Mississippi River | Canoe Camping USA | Ep. 1

- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- In this first episode, we begin our canoe trip down the Mississippi River by putting in at Lake Itasca State Park in northern Minnesota, USA. With only about 3700 km (2300 miles) to our destination, the Gulf of Mexico, and winter right around the corner, we've got to move fast!
Between losing half our water supply in the first 5 minutes, low water levels and lots of fallen trees, we're starting to think this might be a bit more difficult than expected...

Thanks for the follow ! Excited to share with everyone!
Perfect boat for the trip. I would have done support for you around St. Louis if I had known about your trip.
Thanks! Hard to beat an Old Town. We had some help from the crew at Big Muddy Adventures when we landed in St. Louis. The city was good to us! The Cahokia mounds were one of the highlights of our trip.
That’s awesome 👏
Thanks! Uploading videos every Sunday!

Subbed! This is radagast
A reference to Radagast the Brown from Lord Of the Rings? AMAZING! Thanks for the sub!!
Precisely. I hope you "run" in to some Rhosgobel Rabbits on your journey. @@PepandJambo
Haha we could have used the help!
I just started watching your video.
From what point on the river in Northern Minnesota did you have the longest stretch of water without portaging ?
I am building a solar electric canoe that will contain heavy batteries for a trip with the wife down the Mississippi
You could complete the entire river (with minimal "planned" portages) starting south of Minneapolis. Another thing to keep in mind are the "Chain of Rocks" in St. Louis. Some people go through them (risky but doable), some take the canal (you're going to be hanging out with a bunch of massive barges for quite a stretch), or you could try and find a river angel to shuttle you around...
However, be cognisant that there are some long portages in the northern section of the river; Blanchard damn, Grand Rapids and Minneapolis all come to mind.
Hope this was helpful - let us know if you have any more questions!

How were the mosquitos through the headwaters?
It’s like the ride in Disney land pirates of the carrebean
It certainly felt like that! Thanks for watching!
So, you’re paddling, that means lots of water… pls explain why you’re worried about carrying water. Didn’t you guys have a water filter? Thx great video.
Hey, great question! A water filter would have been a good idea. We carried water treating tablets instead (not mentioned in any videos I think).
@ellenely1169 Up where this video was taken, a water filter is possible to use. Once you get past St Cloud, the water has industrial waste, meaning you wouldn't want to drink it even after putting it through any water filter you can carry.
8:55 - 9:02 - Velkins Damn? Ha, ha, ha! A bit of cursing going on at that place?
I use 4 liter apple juice jugs...less cursing...lol
That’s a great idea!
Snow in October What is odd about that?
Greetings from Canada
Fair point, should've expected as much in Minnesota! Calling for snow here tomorrow in Eastern Canada.
@@PepandJamboI should have knocked on wood. It's snowing in Southern Georgian Bay Area right now.
I really like your show...thanks for sharing.
Got about 10 cm here last night@@richardstever3242. Thanks for the kind words, cheers!
