No unfortunately I think you have to have that excess so it fills the mold completely. You could try filling it just to the top and see if you can minimize the excess spilled but you might not have a perfectly spherical ice ball?
@@chelsey8737 i have seen some people fill it halfway, put the lid on and fill up the rest, but i guess depending on the size of the mould, that only works if the little hole on the top is big enough to pour liquid in.

you'd definitely want to warm up the plastic with warm or at least room temperature water to make sure that the plastic isn't super brittle from being cold and will break when you try to bend it.
