I've never heard of it called "waiting mode" before and that just helped me so much. It's almost like our brains tell us we can't possible do anything important while waiting for that thing. I think it's because we know that we may get sucked into that important thing and we won't want to break away when the time comes. With tv, we can allow ourselves to get sucked in, but it's also easy to break away.

Love this lenght, shorter videos just suck me right in and I wouldn’t be able to stop or actually take something away from this.

11:00 yes, multiple times or alarms for when I absentmindedly dismiss the first one. 🙂 Also, my phone set for noon and 5 p.m. recurring every day to be sure I at least twice a day have an external reminder to eat and take meds. I won't always eat specifically at those times, but it helps me track if it's morning, afternoon, or evening.

Thought provoking as always. I wrote a small book about it here but deleted it, haha.

I shared the bonus tip with someone close to me who is going through that sort of paralysis recently and they really appreciated it. Thank you!

i love my visual timer, really really handy for keeping me from playing video games for too long, also its useful anytime i'm anxious about being late for something, which is often. if i need to leave the house in an hour, i set the timer for 40min and i'm actually able to relax knowing that when it goes off i'll have 20 min to get out the door. before the timer, i would just be anxious the whole hour before because if i relax, i'll lose track of time, and i'll be late
...oops got off topic but yeah, love the timer. also i love your sense of fashion, the blocky accessories and bright colors are really fun and friendly.
i'm curious about flow club, i will check it out. i've failed on my self-employment goals like, 800 times and maybe that could help attempt 801

One solution (and it's not that practical or easy) is to have young children. I can't binge watch most TV shows or play many video games when they are around and even if I'm at home and they are at school, I still need to finish on time to pick them up.
The real challenge now is stopping them from binge watching TV or playing games! Streaming services mean they can literally watch cartoons until the sun implodes!
I think there are time limits you can input. We already have limits on their tablets at least!

thanks for this. I had a really stressful phone call on Friday and spent the weekend allowing myself to “do my distraction thing” to avoid having anxiety interrupting me all the time. I got that technique by finding that I was overworking to avoid stressful situations outside of work. So this weekend I literally worked on some “fun” side projects from the office to avoid being anxious about the stressful family situation.
So what I might add to your video is that if I have anxiety, due to constantly getting “interrupted” by a worry, then focusing on something can be really soothing. So one trick might be to avoid doing “that thing you feel shame about” such as the TV (or whatever) and pick a new thing to focus on that is mentally associated with healthy behaviour such as knitting (or whatever). In my case doing office work at the weekend people think of as unhealthy. so as an IT person I go onto IT help forums and answer someone's questions. I can tell my partner “I am stressed about X so I am gonna do relax by doing Y” and all is good.

Excellent! Folks who don't have ADHD often don't understand that we who do often need a *different* activity to decompress, not understimulating silence. Our brains need to change gears to refresh, which can be actively doing something instead of "resting."
