To anyone reading this and trying the 30 day challenge, I highly recommend not switching the tv back on, it's a trap. It's not designed for moderation. I've tried slowing down and limiting me and my kids, it won't work the vast majority of the time. I'm sure there's going to be someone who will find the balance but it's rare. Me amd my family of 5 quite cold turkey after multiple attempts at moderating it and it's been a life changer. Yes I'm on UA-cam right now, but I have a rule, and it is if I'm working I can listen to audio books or UA-cam videos, as long as I'm doing something productive, and it's a challenge in and of itself. No joke, I made almost 4000$ selling all my tvs, game systems and accessories.
Funnily enough watching/listening to UA-cam videos while I’m working is why I’m thinking of quitting. I feel I would be a lot more productive if I wasn’t constantly distracted.
I was in the same place as you. Here is my experience..... Giving up UA-cam (watching not creating) literally changed my life for the better in the 10 days I run the experiment. I had zero brain fog and I started to think about things differently. I spent on average 6 to 10 hours a day on UA-cam. Things such as eating became more enjoyable and I could actually taste food...Whereas before I would just eat and focus on watching UA-cam and not really take into account the flavors etc (bad example I know). I also noticed that social anxiety was reduced when I stopped watching UA-cam. Correlation does not imply causation but I felt different and I can't really put it into words. I'm not doing a good job of selling this haha but honestly that small amount of time was the best time in terms of work and enjoyment I've had in a long time. I'm on holiday now but in a few days I will be cutting it out for good. I honestly recommend it if you are looking to get to that next level in your life.

After noticing that I had a serious streaming addiction, i started a light version of this, cutting out everything in English and German (my native language), watching stuff only in one of the 4 languages I focus on learning right now, with subtitles in only that language. That helped me not only to improve the languages but also reducing my screen time, as it's much more exhausting and, especially in the beginning, not that entertaining. The time I'm saving I put into reading, exercising, writing, and more language learning. Also my day is way more structured now. I
That is an awesome way to do it! I wonder if my wife would go for it. The only problem is that my second language is French and her's is Spanish. What are the 4 languages you're focusing on?
@@TylerLloyd Ah I had a similar situation and our compromise was only watching shows in their original language together, no matter which one. As almost all international shows are dubbed here in Germany, this was a pretty big step for my roommates. Right now my languages are French, Japanese, Italian and Swedish. I guess my French is on a level where listening/immersion is the right next step to reach fluency. Japanese & Italian I've been learning for 2 years, so there's a lot of looking up words involved. Swedish is pretty new, but the similarities to German are super helpful. Having matching subtitles is great in any language, which rules out dubbed shows, as dub and sub usually are very different. It's super hard and annoying sometimes, but little results are motivating. I really hope I can keep it up. I see so many great side effects at learning languages, getting to know my own language better, getting a better understanding on cultures, actively learning something and improving every day. How did you learn French? Do you have any advice on language learning? I think a video about that would be awesome.
I learned French the easy but most stressful way: full immersion with no option to speak English. I lived and worked in Burkina Faso, in a remote village, as part of the US Peace Corps. It was an amazing experience. While I had studied Latin in school, I had never spoken an other language other than English. I actually considered myself to be bad at learning languages. Yet, when you have no other option to communicate or express yourself, the learning happens quickly. My French is still a bit crude, but it was good enough to form lasting friendships.
Best advice there, so as my two main languages are also Gemran and Englsh, I will for now on just "focus" on Serbian or Chinese Content as I want to master these two languages.
Hey I just discovered this video but I want to share that it's been a month I haven't watched TV for a month and it's really liberating. ❤️ I never thought I crab do so much and still have so much time on my hands.
Keep it up! I definitely had a massive relapse once the challenge was over but now I’ve found a happy medium that isn’t all or nothing. So much more free time!
Spent all day watching stuff and ignored the tasks I needed to do. I feel terrible about myself, it's a serious addiction but it seems so acceptable to society. Since 6th grade when we got home internet till now (about 11 years) I've been watching tv series or videos every single day. I wish that streaming didn't exist because I cannot seem to control myself and I feel like I'm wasting my life away, don't remember when was the last time I was productive. :( I need help...

My time is spent on watching YT videos, but I'm tired of being here. I'm not very productive at home as a result of watching YT.
I feel you! I get in the trap of taking a short break that turns into an hour+ or putting something on in the background that totally distracts me. I'm trying to do more monotasking and making focusing on one thing a meditative exercise. Its hard, really hard, really really hard, but a good practice.
Hey Tyler! Thank you so much for book you sent. I’m doing a 30 day of no spending on nonsense, and reading more. Thank you for always being inspiring 😊
You're so welcome! I love that you are doing no spending on nonsense. After doing this challenge and several others that cut out something completely, I've recognized that it often isn't sustainable. Much better to allow for flexibility. Sometimes you need to spend money, but better to spend according to your rules and values rather than feeling like it is all or nothing.
I don't watch Netflix or Amazon prime. I got to get rid of social media, BUT... I'm still addicted to UA-cam. I watch UA-cam for many hours a day, but although I watch only documentaries, research, science, self improvement videos, but I'd like to get rid of that. The problem is that I have depression, and I don't feel any passion for almost anything. My old habits like playing an instrument, sing, working... It sucks ! I prefer to be on my bed watching UA-cam very comfortable. When I cut UA-cam, I feel empty, I search something to do, but they are all boring and don't bring any enjoyment. Nothing interesting 🤔. I know I'm not productive, but even knowing that, doesn't matter much. I only feel so strange that I'm not interested anymore in things that I used to be. It's called anhedonia. I had several UA-cam channels, but even keeping them, all that struggle to maintain... make them growth... So depressing, it doesn't carry me to any place. Sometimes I'm better and begin to think about doing things again, but soon, this desire goes away again. Everything is pointless. Sorry, I don't want to make you feel also depressed. 🎉
my problem is that I follow these twitch streamers right? and they’re super active across a lot of social medias (youtube, twitter, reddit, twitch) and have a lot of inside jokes, and it’s gotten to the point where i’m scared of missing out. but you’re absolutely right because my fear of missing out on these parasocial relationships made me miss out on real things like time with family and time to myself in general I’m pretty sure I failed my calculus exam because of this and it’s not only that (though it’s my most prominent problem) I’m really bad about limiting myself and prioritizing because i go through these little obsessive bursts wether it be music, drawing, reading, writing or consuming content (duh) and once I start I find it really hard to stop until eventually, I do and then I just move on to the next thing until I get tired of it and the cycle continues. I think it really helps to replace one thing with another. Like, whenever you feel like watching stuff or scrolling tiktok, read a book instead or go for a walk with a podcast. If you aren't into books already it seems hard, but reading can be super exciting once you found the right kind of book. And once you got in that world that's so much more versatile and exciting than anything else, you won't regret it. I'm seriously addicted to Netflix and those two things helped me to limit that time immensely. (Also i cut out everything English on Netflix, which makes it just another language learning tool right now). Also, if you don't have one, buy a wristwatch. Checking the time is my #1 entrance to spending time on the phone. I still can't believe how much phone screen that has saved me.
Definitely it’s hard for all of us. I imagine it’s a dopamine thing, so adding in dopamine activities throughout the day helps lower cravings/exhaustion later. Things like walking outside, drinking tea and relaxing, reading, petting an animal, time with a friend, for me things like putting music on and dancing, putting lotion on, painting nails, bath, gardening, cooking, etc all feel good. To help those first weeks where the brain is screaming at you for the quick n easy dopamine like tv, make it harder. One thing I did was put website block-site apps on my computer and then had someone change my Netflix password for me so anytime I wanted to watch something they had to sign in for me and that embarrassed me to have to do that like hmm do I really want to watch this and have them know what and how often I’m watching.
i promise you nothing that you're viewing on twitch does anything to improve your life. you're not learning anything and you're not building relationships.
I really liked your transition from greyish depressing to brighter optimistic at 05:05 really a subtle way to put....I am pretty confident you did it intentionally ....thumbs up
Alright, this will be the last time for me watching a youtube video! Wish me luck, because i really need to fight this addiction. I watch youtube for like 3 to 6 hours a day, and its ruining my life. Hopefully other people can use this as inspiration too. Might come back to this comment in a month to share my experiences :)
@@rahuljis6465 hey, so I’m gonna be honest here. I’ve not been able to quit, but I did get as low as an average of less than 1 hour a day for 7 days. But the summer vacation has made things very difficult so I’m back up again. When we get back from vacation, I’ll have a few weeks until my internship starts for college. I’m gonna try and see if I can make some improvements. I’ll try to come back to this comment in another month to update you guys :)
We watch very little TV these days (4, maybe 5 hours per week), no streaming services other than NFL Gamepass for football season. I probably watch too much UA-cam, but even that I've cut way back on. I've read more in the last 6 weeks than in the 3 years previous to that, I reckon. And I get plenty of guitar practice time!
What if there is no way to separate the good from the bad on UA-cam and never learned consistency or feel stuck in life? The suggestions are good but if I don't know what to do, should I do nothing until I come up with something if I feel isolated from social media even if I use it less?
What activities did you enjoy doing as a kid or have done that cause you to lose a sense of time and get into a flow? Consider revisiting those. I’d also recommend reading (or listening) to two books: Essentialism, and Atomic Habits.
It all feels wicked to me. I cut back and watch less than 2 hrs and ended up attending 10 writing events and wrote a new book and a few pdf's. I watch about an hr of youtube a day, like 4 days a week at least and still its too much. I am cutting it back to 20 minutes a day for my writing education.
Thumbs up for distinguishing between reading books and listening to audiobooks. It is not the same thing, and it drives me bananas when someone says they "read a book" on Audible or whatever. Off my soapbox now. Thanks for this inspiring video, Tyler! I challenged myself to give up TV shows and movies from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Now that the end of my challenge is approaching, I don't think I will go back to boob tubing away hours of my life. Like you, I got a lot of reading done and took up new activities and habits. PS: I did not give up watching educational/self-development UA-cam videos, obviously! 🙂
🎉🎉🎉THAAAAAANK YOU!!!! And most of the time people are not even truly even listening to the audible. People are reading these five minute synopsis of these books and trying to link their understanding of it. I have tons of books I need to read and getting back into that habit
For most of us, it's high time we stopped watching and started doing. I've been going about two days off at a time and I've felt better after day two every single time. If you can go a week I can guarantee that you'll feel way better. I've build several plastic model kits over the last couple of years and I'd like to keep that in rotation. I will admit that it's difficult to look at a fresh model that hasn't been opened, just sitting there waiting for me to engage but something certainly must give.
Very motivational! Good video, I have a lot of plans but I find myself always wasting time on TikTok or even UA-cam! Just one 20 min youtube video turns to 2 hours!
Thank you for this 🎉I am going cold turkey after this last season of “YOU” comes out on Netflix. After that I’m done. I haven’t been impressed at all with anything coming out these days except for “you” YT is great because people can hone in on their skills and learn a lot with YT.
I personally don't limit myself from watching short videos because I can pair them with another task especially if the video isn't filled with information requiring concentration. However, for films and series I dedicate two hours at night before going to sleep. This combination for me works well. I love progress but progress and productivity shouldn't feel like an imprisonment. It's important to reward yourself everyday. Thanks for sharing, Tyler.
"progress and productivity shouldn't feel like an imprisonment" I wish I could ❤️ this 100x times. It is a trap I too often find myself in, but I completely agree.
just know 2 hours every night over the course of a year (save 2 days a week for 'weekend') you're still looking at 520hours. That's 21 days just for some perspective
2 hours of tv a day is still a lot buddy..you didnt fix the binge problen at all. It is pure cope. I would say max 30 minutes a day but in a ideal world you should just stop completely. 2 hours a day is just like the smoker that doenst want to admit his addiction. Dont get angry im just trying to help
@@123telamonlol watching a movie every night isn't binging or a problem. If you spend 8 hours a day sleeping, 14 hours being productive, and 2 hours relaxing watching TV, that's a pretty good balance
Y'all need help for a reason to stop streaming, calculate all of your subscriptions and how much that cost you a month times that how much it'll cost you a year. When I actually looked into all our subscriptions we were spending like $1,000 to $2,000 a year just on subscriptions to like Netflix and that that's nuts
I feel like I watch UA-cam all the time because I have too much time. I wake up at 5am then I get ready and have breakfast, start homework at 6am, finish by 7am, clean and read for a little, go to class at 9am, and normally by noon I’m finished with EVERYTHING. Two or three days a week I work as a nanny, usually for about 5 hours a day and those are the highlights of my week. Saturdays I rest and don’t do homework, cleaning, or work. Early on Sunday mornings I do 4-8 hours of homework depending on how much work I have, just to make sure I don’t have to do more than an hour a day during the week. I think when you don’t have a social life you end up with a lot of free time. I’m a full time student and I also work but still I have a ton of time and end up spending my entire afternoon reading and watching UA-cam… The idea of having more time is scary to me because I don’t even know what I would do. I feel like I’d get depressed without UA-cam.
Everyone is different and I have no problems with UA-cam. I love UA-cam, but also want to make space for other things in my life and not get sucked into streaming. As long as it is something you want to do, I see no problem!
Listening to those audio books (not related to a project or a problem you need solved) is no different than listening to UA-cam videos. It is just my opinion.
I AGREE. As an audible addict, I’m having to cut it out now as well as podcasts because I will spend all day listening and it’s just as much of a problem…
I just unplugged my Chromecast and put it in a box. I'm not allowed to touch it, only guests can if someone comes over and we're gonna watch a film or something. I need to start a counter for days without watching a UA-cam recommended video.
Again a great video! 👍 I cut out Netflix recently and don't miss it; haven't had anything else for years now. Except UA-cam, and I'll stick with that 😎 Gotta support great channels like yours 😜
I quit all other social media 10 weeks ago. I sometimes miss 'that girl' content and minimalism but other stuff not one bit. That said, I am on UA-cam a lot more and I am not surprised by it. I guess I say, 'well I am trying to be a UA-camr so I need to watch to gain ideas' but that doesn't cut it with me anymore. I need to stop, maybe turn 'watching UA-cam' into something I do on the bus as I am on those 40-80 minutes 5 days a week.
I do the same, but often find myself unfulfilled. Instead, I'm trying to get outside when the weather isn't terrible, mediate, read a book, or exercise.
@@TylerLloyd Usually I don't use streaming much, youtube&instagram are the most of the problem. So I've cut them out in sense of entertainment. Switched to audiobook and will leave some time for a movie or two at the weekend, also music during work, when I need it. For now, working fine for me: provokes more walking and socializing, I feel more relaxed. Urge to check instagram is still here, but I'm able to handle it.
Well, there are several things that come to mind. First, look for books that you actually enjoy reading. I know that might sound like no-brainer advice, but lots of people read certain books because they feel they should like them. No matter if you want to read Zombie romance novels or physics textbooks, you get to decide what you like. Second, it doesn't have to be all or nothing. If you don't like reading, it will take time to develop the practice. How about you find a book that interests you and then set it on top of the TV remote. Before you watch TV, you need to read for 10 minutes. You can read for 10 minutes, then watch TV. Do this every time. If you start picking books you like, over time, that 10 minutes will become longer and longer. And, reading books doesn't have to replace TV. While my experiments tend to be all or nothing, extremes often aren't sustainable. The goal shouldn't be to stop watching TV immediately and forever, but rather to fill your time with things you enjoy and find fulfillment in, which will be different for everyone. That help?
Best of luck! Quitting for 30 days ways good, especially to see how much time is spent watching screens, but something more moderate is better longterm. I hope it goes well.
I don’t want to give up or show my cards 🃏 🃏 I just work. I work 6-7 days a week. Full-time, part-time and side jobs, side gigs. Why would you care so much about a joke some random on his computer on the other side of the world says 24/7 ….. they don’t care about you
I really liked your transition from greyish depressing to brighter optimistic at 05:05 really a subtle way to put....I am pretty confident you did it intentionally ....thumbs up
Alright, this will be the last time for me watching a youtube video! Wish me luck, because i really need to fight this addiction. I watch youtube for like 3 to 6 hours a day, and its ruining my life. Hopefully other people can use this as inspiration too. Might come back to this comment in a month to share my experiences :)
Wishing you the best! See you in a month!
Hey it's been a month
Congrats on all the reading! Fiction, non-fiction, or mix?
@@TylerLloyd Mostly fiction, but a few non-fiction books too
What if there is no way to separate the good from the bad on UA-cam and never learned consistency or feel stuck in life?
It's exactly how you said it. Well done, yt will not love this one..
Thanks! And yes, my videos about not being on your phone or that have anti-consumerism messages don’t do as well 🤔
Thumbs up for distinguishing between reading books and listening to audiobooks.
I will admit that it's difficult to look at a fresh model that hasn't been opened, just sitting there waiting for me to engage but something certainly must give.
thanks man.......I was in need of this
Hopefully you found it inspiring!
@@TylerLloyd yea I'm following it.....that's the reason why i'm replying your message after 2 days😁😁
I don't know how the UA-cam algorithm even allowed me to see this video. There must be so many great videos out there on this topic besides this one.
Very motivational! Good video, I have a lot of plans but I find myself always wasting time on TikTok or even UA-cam! Just one 20 min youtube video turns to 2 hours!
I know how that goes! Give it a try. You’ve not nothing to lose.
Thank you for this 🎉I am going cold turkey after this last season of “YOU” comes out on Netflix. After that I’m done.
I haven’t been impressed at all with anything coming out these days except for “you”
YT is great because people can hone in on their skills and learn a lot with YT.
Wishing you the best! The weather is turning nice here, so that is limiting how much I’m inside and really helps.
Such an informative video, this deserves a million views ! Love from India !
Glad you liked it!! Every comment like this helps. ❤️
I feel the exact same
Listening to those audio books (not related to a project or a problem you need solved) is no different than listening to UA-cam videos.
Stay strong!
Again a great video! 👍 I cut out Netflix recently and don't miss it; haven't had anything else for years now. Except UA-cam, and I'll stick with that 😎 Gotta support great channels like yours 😜
Appreciate the support! 😉 😆
I may need to try this challenge!
I need to revisit this challenge myself.
I think for me watching videos allows me to relax or when I'm feeling low it's a distraction so what to do in these cases?
I do the same, but often find myself unfulfilled. Instead, I'm trying to get outside when the weather isn't terrible, mediate, read a book, or exercise.
I must admire your sense of humour 😹
Thanks! haha :-D
It's midnight soon. Starting tomorrow, whish me strength to do my 30 day challenge.
Wishing you the best!
Thank you for the great idea and for sharing your experience. Just in time for my current struggles. Guess I'll try this for a week starting now :)
Welcome! I hope you find some value in your own week long challenge. Are you going to cut everything out or try and set a daily limit?
@@TylerLloyd Usually I don't use streaming much, youtube&instagram are the most of the problem. So I've cut them out in sense of entertainment. Switched to audiobook and will leave some time for a movie or two at the weekend, also music during work, when I need it. For now, working fine for me: provokes more walking and socializing, I feel more relaxed. Urge to check instagram is still here, but I'm able to handle it.
@@TylerLloyd will think through some limiting strategy after that)
PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO DO IT??? TV SEEM RELAXING AND READING DOESNT. WHAT DO I DO?? HELP!!!
That help?
im only listening to music and gathering information i feel its not same. Because i never watch stories
I can do much more . It's a discipline. That's fine . I can give it up and do something else instead .
Life is all about trade offs. Everyone has 24 hours in a day but not everyone spends them the same.
No much videos on UA-cam about how I stopped watching UA-cam. Or 1 year without UA-cam
Banned?
Gonna challenge myself to quit it! Thanks for ur video!
Best of luck! Quitting for 30 days ways good, especially to see how much time is spent watching screens, but something more moderate is better longterm. I hope it goes well.
No UA-cam?! nooooo
I lasted 3 days and then binged watched tonnes of the viking and now watching UA-cam c
It's been 2 years. Did you fall back to old habits?
Yes, but it comes in waves. I find it a constant battle against the temptations of modern tech.
I watch UA-cam bc I have no friends
Well, I appreciate you watching and hope you find some like minded people to spend time with.
Me too
The 20,000 subsidation gets me how y'all not walk that far. I can walk that far and not leave my house but I am a Pacer. Even when I watch TV I pace
Netflix has made it really easy for me to give it up with their new ridiculous prices.
We share an account, for now. When that ends, I don’t think we’ll have it.
You are on UA-cam talking about being off UA-cam?
@@andreathompson-bg4hl correct.
Subscribed.
Thanks! Hopefully you like gardening content 😆
@@TylerLloyd I do!
What if UA-cam is used as learning material?
If only for education I guess it isn’t bad. My problem is over use.
@@TylerLloyd thanks man
No UA-cam!!!!!
I know. Hard but made for a very productive month.
There is no entertainment but ideology.

I don’t want to give up or show my cards 🃏 🃏
I just work. I work 6-7 days a week. Full-time, part-time and side jobs, side gigs.
I try to keep up with streaming and read a book. 💻🖥️📱📖
I don’t watch as much television streaming because I work around the clock 🕰️
However I do listen to Sirius XM satellite radio 📻 📡🛰️
Listening to satellite radio kind of keeps me updated. I mostly listen to music, a little bit of sports, entertainment and the news.
Internet 🛜 💻🖥️📱 social media networks. I’ll read, watch the news 🗞️ 📰
When I have free time, I like to workout, walk around the beach, eat out (sometimes), and maybe watch a movie at the theater. 🍿
Well it’s back to work back to reality. 🧹🛠️💵
