- This week we explore what you can purchase on the used boat market for $75,000 to $150,000. There are many great examples ranging in age from 16 to 25 years old. Most boats in this range are gas powered and offer space for a small family of friends to cruise to your favorite places. We look at a Searay, Carver, Rinker and Tiara. The Rinker and Searay are express style boats, the Carver is an aft cabin and the Tiara is an express boat with fishability.
We also look at the cost of owing boats in th his range.

We love the ocean and boating! We cruise in our 2001 Sea Ray 400 Sedan Bridge, Calypso II, on the South Coast of Massachusetts and Cape Cod and the Islands. Join us on our adventures - we share favorite ports and places to visit, favorite boating products, and how-tos.

+ Our current boat - Calypso II, a 2001 Sea Ray 400 Sedan Bridge:
In 2019, we wanted a new boat that was bigger and had a longer range, so we targeted 40-footers with diesel power to achieve both of these goals. With our criteria and budget, we searched for a diesel-powered Sea Ray 400 Sedanbridge 2001 or newer. After scouring the Internet we found a boat on the Chesapeake Bay which would become Calypso II.
+ Specs - 2001 Sea Ray 400 Sedan Bridge:
• Length: 40 feet
• Beam: 14 feet
• Draft: 4 feet
• Fuel: diesel 350 gal
• Power: 2 Caterpillar 3126 inboard straight-shaft turbocharged diesel engines 350hp each
---------------------------------------------------------------------
+ Dinghy
2021 North Atlantic Inflatables, 9" 8" Aluminum RIB
Tohatsu 8Hp outboard motor
---------------------------------------------------------------------
+ Where we cruise:
Calypso II is moored in Sippican Harbor in Marion, MA - in Buzzards Bay. We use our boat to explore the islands, ports, coves, and harbors of this amazing place.
For overnight boating, we often head to Cuttyhunk Island, Martha’s Vineyard Island or Nantucket Island, off the coast of Massachusetts. In 2021, we plan to head to Maine to explore some of the beautiful harbors and ports of Southern and Mid-Coast Maine.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
+ Our commitment to the sea:
Because we enjoy boating and the fun it brings our family, we are committed to protecting the bays, harbors, and oceans we cruise on, as well as the ones we dream about. Starting with following no-discharge rules, not using disposable plastic bottles, and only using biodegradable products on Calypso II, we try to do our part to preserve this invaluable resource.

This is a great video. Thank you for this information into my early retirement for my Great Loop adventure and travel and life out my life on the water.
Ooof! What a great video, especially with the budget at the beginning. That is an insane amount of money monthly. I have been wanting to buy a houseboat or a cruiser for so many years. I could afford it now but I didn't think that all the other expenses would triple my monthly cost.
outstanding video! loved the finance bit as well
Much appreciate the information you give about the close cost to what it takes to own and live on a nice boat.
Thanks for watching! glad it helped!
Wonderful channel!
Keep em coming!
Love the reviews!
Same i hope he never stops I'm really addicted ❤
the Carver is by far the best layout
I like the tierra...
Good comparison. I like it! 😊
Thanks for watching and commenting!
That small amount of money will buy you just enough boat , to make you wish you had never bought one!!!
I disagree.
Looking for a boat to seasonally live aboard. Would prefer to go throw a Broker. Around Florida.
what are dock fees in Miami area?
NICE
My parents were rich I grew up on a 36 ft Catalina sailboat I literally grew up racing those small butterflies I just purchased a 30 foot Sea Ray 1999 and I feel like a pig in shit lol never been so happy
Good luck to you! I am sure it's the best feeling in the world haha
Please tell us how much gas is in the boat :D
Is there anything like the Carver but in the 40ft range, equipped with Diesel engines, and capable of getting up on plane with a cruising speed of around 25-30kts and a top speed closer to 35-40kts or better? Not necessarily looking for one in THIS price range, just a general curiosity. It also doesn't necessarily need to be capable of that speed from the factory, but the hull and drives should be able to hold up to an engine swap that could theoretically double/triple the power.
Cruising boats capable of running at 25-30 with diesel power can be had. Most of them will top out at low 30s. Getting to 40 knots for a diesel boat requires a lot of HP. Definitely possible but why?
@@CruisingCalypso I like to go fast but don't wanna mess with turbines and hate the fuel consumption of gassers. The engine swap I was considering was 2-4 1000hp Cummins 6bt. No, they don't make them from the factory like that, so you won't be able to find specs on them. But that's the whole point of an engine _swap._
Just for note 1000hp spec 6bt can rev to or over 4000rpm and still produce about double that hp number in lb-ft of torque.
Given it's 2023, just wondering if getting a sea ray 340 as far back as say 2006-2007 is hazardous? Hazardous meaning is it too old and I should budget for more things to fix? Any and all comments welcomed by those who have gone through it. Thanks in advance.
Hi, Great question. The 340 is a great sized boat. Plenty of room for day boating and overnighting but not to big and expensive to operate. 2006-2007 certainly not to old, you can go older and still get a great boat! Sundancers are pretty tough boats.that hold up well assuming they are taken care of. As long as the engines have been maintained, manifolds replaced as needed, and other maintenance items taken care of, you will be fine. Th one thing you will need to look into is I belie th e 8.1s horizon engines that the model has , used something called the "cool fuel" module. This is a device that water cools the fuel pump to try to prevent vapor lock on hot days. Depending on which gen of this module, early versions can be problematic . I believe th e issues were worked out with the gun III version which can be retrofitted if necessary. Not a large cost item but they can be a headache. The earlier 340s through 2002 ish has the 7,4 l motors, similar power and no cool fuel but the boat was a different design. Other areas to be aware of. The water system is pretty robust but has filters that can clog if the water sits around for a while. Easy to clean out. That pretty much it. Happy to discuss more. I have been on many 340s.
@@CruisingCalypso thanks so much for your reply. It helps alot as I am currently looking at 2002-2007 340 Sun dancers. They fit the bill in terms of price, size of boat, and functionality of the boat.
Curious, why wouldn't you consider the Carver for open ocean? Is it stability related, motor related? Or just quality in general that it cannot handle that type of usage? Just wondering.
Hi thanks for your question. Carver made good boats, now sadly out of business. Generally speaking, this class of boat including many Searays, Cruisers and Regal boats are really intended for coastal cruising or within 50 miles from shore. these boats have neither the range or the stability to be long distance ocean cruisers like a Nordhavn or a Flemming. The is s good. thing because a Norhavn is too much boat for coastal cruisng. Its all about matching the tool to the job.
Prices are continuing to drop finally
No way. Projecting. Bayliner or Meridian sport trawler/cruiser with diesels smashes these boats in every category at this price point. Edit: Good effort though, good effort.
I feel like that $112 monthly for fuel is a bit low
I'm a new subscriber and I think you'll see a lot of me :)
Did they make older boots built stronger and better? Like how cars are now. New ones suck!
Where is the boat budget tool? I don’t see it on the site.
I was just looking on the site and it appears that the link is dead or missing. I would love to have the tool as well.
If you have not heard...
The 2 best days of a boat owner ?
The day they buy it and the day they sell it
I enjoy it every day.
Sooooo original
"I Did. Thanks".
Not much. Boat prices are outrageous right now.
A raft with two poles and a can for a biffy
Don’t buy anything with GAS ENGINES. diesels cost more because they are worth it
Did you just say a "modest boat loan at 3%?!?!?" Even 1.5 years ago, no effing way!
I refinanced my house before the stolen election and got a 2.5 refi
@@Fdeubcfhbbjhfd That's a house, not a boat loan. Try and keep up.
Instead to have a buy yacht cheaply and old 42/50/60/65
That’s because the boating market is too high
1:32. That didn’t age well.
i can do 100k to 300k
That's a broad range and would include a number of different vessels. At the upper end of your budget you can get into a larger 40-48 vessel that's is early 2000's or a new boat 37-40 from the later 2005-2012. A lot of options for you!
this is 2 years old how could this help me buy boat now BS
If it's got a motor, a propeller, or a VA whinah,,you're gonna have problems with it.
