  • Get your heating going again with this super simple to make portable oil tank This very easy to make portable emergency fill kit is very handy in an emergency when all you can get is small amounts of kerosene or diesel. I just used the following fittings to put this together
    1/2 inch lever valve,
    1/2 inch Bulk head Fitting,
    1/2 x 10mm brass coupling.
    3/8 x 1/4 standard oil line
    Very easy build and can be connected if the tank is empty or broken some how.
    Hope this helps
    Cheers Gerry

    Would you think of setting up a business of making 5 gallon tanks.... due to the current climate and situation with fuel,it could be a massive benefit to people who could only afford small fills and with the current fuel shortage people could manage usage and efficiently

    I had to syphon paraffin out of a 4 liter container to get the heating going last winter - it was a bit heath-robinson, but saw us through the weekend until we could get a delivery. Might use your idea to have in reserve in case it happens again. Thanks Gerry, keep up with the great videos.

    I made several temp fuel tanks for testing old trucks at my shop out of 1 gallon gas cans in a similar way. Eliminate the main tank and pump to see if it solved an issue. On this topic In the case you mention id rather see a homeowner buy 5 gallons of fuel in a gas can and pour it in the main tank. This would be safer i believe too. Think of a homeowner that has a burner in the basement. He swaps lines thinking hes out of fuel and lights the burner. All is good and person heads upstairs. The all of the sudden some crud or rust flakes dribble out the main tank line and it starts flowing again..... see where this could be a bad situation. May want to add some guidelines for testing and perhaps a screw in plug for the main line you disconnected just in case. :)
    But yea Home Depot in the USA even has the bulkhead fittings to add a hole to a 5 gallon bucket. Brewers etc sometimes use them.

    I set this up and when the oil burner is firing the drum slowly contracts, is this normal or should there be a pinhole at the top to allow air back in above the oil? Again, sorry if this is a silly question

    • @GerrysDiy
      @GerrysDiy  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Sean. It's important to leave the lid slightly unscrewed so that the pressure can equalise. As the burner is removing the fuel from the drum the drum will contract. You are making vacuum. Hope this helps. Well done on getting it made. Cheer s Gerry 👍

    • @GerrysDiy
      @GerrysDiy  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Sean. Its just a 1/2 inch tank connector. If you cut the hole correctly you wont need any washers inside the tank. Good luck Cheers Gerry

  • @eljermc
    @eljermc 3 роки тому +1

    Why didn't you use the rubber washer?

    • @GerrysDiy
      @GerrysDiy  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Elijah. Kerosene is corrosive to the washer. As the container is plastic the tank connector makes a perfect seal without the need for washers. Works great. Thanks for commenting Cheers Gerry 👍

    Gerry, strange question, is it possible to leave this set up in situ permanently?, so in effect a duel supply line. (Main tank and small barrel as tank)
    If I fit a tee connector and an isolating valve to the main supply line from the tank and fed the smaller tank into the main line.
    As you said some people are feeling the pinch at this current time.
