How to make an incinerator bin from a 55 gallon drum

- This video shows how to make a 55 gallon drum into an incinerator bin quickly and easily. The lid can quickly be removed using an air chisel, or you can use an angle grinder but it is more difficult and time consuming. The breather holes at the bottom can be drilled using a step drill or a hole saw.

Thank you for your time to make the videos, enjoy them all.
You are welcome.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
This video has been so helpful as I got a barrel just like this from our local car garage today👍so now I know what to tell my husband to do and make it look like I know what I'm on about 🤣🤣😜
👍
Very useful thing to have in the garden. I used a pick axe to the punch holes, crude but effective.
Thanks for the comment
I've been doing this for years. I see it's finally caught on. Good on ya.
You and everyone in rural America
what do you call that tool you are using to open the cover of that drum?
@@chestersabado6991 It's an air chisel, they are relatively inexpensive, but you need an air compressor.
That air chisel worked great! Could have done with that to open a tough tin of beans the other day! haha.
LOL, yeah it was just like a giant tin opener ;-)
There is a better way to open a tin of beans though, just put it inside of a pie warmer - one guy did this on site and when he removed it the lid blew clean off. The beans went all over the ceiling etc. he was really lucky he was not badly burned! They still have pictures of it now near the pie warmer ;-)
Great project Chez - Have a great Sunday!
Thanks John- you too ;-)
I just use a pick axe to put vent holes in mine. Makes quick work.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Always cut the lid off from the side as you can then use spare as a proper burning lid
that would weaken the structure of the bin
I've been using drums like this for years, but I've also cut holes in the bottom as well. These allow rain water to escape more easily and aid the 'breathing' for the fire.
It almost goes without saying, that the heavier gauge steel drum you can get, the longer they will last.
I might put a few holes in the bottom later.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
The fan is all it needs to breath.
Just cut the bottom out. Cut some v-notches around outer edge of cutout. Place three to four bricks in bottom of inside barrel. Drop cut out section on top of bricks at bottom of barrel. Place on flat stones or short cinder blocks for airflow through factory hole that was the top.
😂
Its like opening a big old tin of factory rejected tune, YUM :)
Absolutely.
Thanks for the comment
I use a reciprocating saw with a metal blade to zip the top off. It does it very quickly with no ragged edge.
👍
Finally I can make my own incinerator company!..... Disposing body will need extra though!
😂
Thanks for the comment 👍
For that, you need a 55 gallon drum remove the top. Pour 25 gallons of diesal in it. Place body in. Get diesal hot enough to start burning come back 2-3 hours later all bones will be ash. Granted you have a place you can burn a major fire like that. No holes in the barrel. Once the diesal starts boiling you'll be over 1400degeees that bone ashes at

Was wondering what an eer chisel was....but yeah figured it out. Cheers mate!
👍
nice job and quite straightforward,,, love the air tool very control.
what make of drill were you using for the holes ?
Thanks, it's an AEG.
I was sent it for testing out ;-)
we have always had ONE OF THESE ON THE FARM ..better believe that
Thanks for the comment
Great video! I was mainly wondering how do you create enough heat for it to burn waste.
Once you have some combustible material in the barrel, it will soon burn when the air starts drawing through the holes at the base
Thanks for the comment 👍
@@ultimatehandyman Thank you!
"You do not want to get one that has had flammables in it"
Well, now I do :)
Flammable or not always open the valve and run water hose in to wash it out. There's always a valve port on top
Would you share the drill brand and model, also bit used to drill the holes? Great Vid 👌🏻Tks
The drill is an AEG BSB 18CBL, but it only seems to be for sale in Germany at the moment on ebay- fave.co/2iybVEv
It was sent to me by a PR company to test out (it's my favourite drill at the moment).
The drill bit was a step drill- ua-cam.com/video/YD-WcAZ_ynI/v-deo.html
A few weeks back I sourced some cobalt coated ones from Bang good which were much cheaper than the ones I used in this video- ua-cam.com/video/fvumt2z0GLI/v-deo.html
Thanks for the comment
We did this back in the 50's. Today the problem is finding good 55 gal. drums cheap. The addition of a cheap electric leaf blower turns it into an incinerator.
Thanks for the comment 👍
I would add to hammer down the sharp edge from cutting the top off.
👍
I used to cut one of this drum , what I did was to put half tank of water inside to muffled the noice and to add some weight on it before cutting it , so that I don't disturb my neighbours. nice video thanks for sharing ..👍
Thanks for the comment ;-)
need air chisel 4 those fray bentos pie tins they a nightmare to open
LOL
Surprisingly I was going to make EXACTLY the same comment (I had one last week - and when I saw the air chisel thought it could be the answer) . I was going to ask the shop where I bought the pie - did anyone ever buy another one?
I was thinking same thing, the only place I could get a good opener for fray bentos tin was Ikea!
This incinerator can used for garden refuse what else it looks very useful
I burn cardboard, sensitive documents and garden waste in mine. They are really useful and can save a trip to the tip ;-)
Very handy, thanks. Please could you let me know what the paste is you apply to the step drill?
The paste I used was called Exact cutting paste, there are a few different brands of the same product.
The cutting paste cools and lubricates the drill bits making them last longer.
Thanks for the comment
Thanks :)
You are welcome ;-)
You are welcome ;-)
Alternatively you could use a sds drill with roto stop if you didn’t have a air chisel.
I'll try that next time ;-)
Thanks for the comment 👍
If you put drain holes in the bottom, the sides won't rust out like that.
Nice One Plus quite informative Except you didn't put any holes in the bottom for air flow plus drainage! What diameter where the holes etc. cheers
I always put the lid on when I'm not using it, so no need for drainage holes.
The holes that I drilled are about 20mm
Thanks for the comment
I was going to say, haven't you already got an incinerator! Yet another tool I didn't know existed, the air chisel, I'll remember that one. It looked much easier than say a jigsaw with a metal cutting blade. Another good video, you've just reminded me that I have some garden waste I need to burn!
Air chisels are brilliant. I actually bought that in about 1999 when I was renovating a property that needed the plaster removing from floor to ceiling ( I did not know that you could get an SDS drill with rotary stop back then). I needed to remove the stainless steel kitchen sink but I did not have a tap wrench so I used the air chisel to cut around the tap.
The air chisel that I used on site did the job much faster but that was a bigger version and the compressor is a hundred times bigger than my home compressor.
Thanks for the comment
If you are lucky enough to be able to get a 55 gallon drum for free you can easily turn it into an incinerator bin. I’m still very busy working on site, but trying to get some new videos made!
Happy Sunday everyone ;-)
Ultimate Handyman cheers for the video mate, top man!
Ultimate Handyman Cheers. loads better than the paper thin incinerators you can. buy from shops too.
You are welcome.

If you add drain holes on the bottom they last a bit longer. I usually open the bungs and flip the drum over. Cut the bottom out and use it as the top. Built in drainage! I've never had lids for mine though, that should help.
Hmmm, kind of scraping the "bottom of the barrel" for subject matter aren't you? :-D
That air chisel works great.
LOL, yes the air chisel is a superb piece of kit ;-)
Thanks for the comment
Any tips on likely sources of drum?
You can try Gumtree/ebay.
Sometimes people post them on Gumtree as they just want to get rid of them quickly.
Unless there are any firms local to you that use them, as they might get the odd damaged one.
Craigslist or local oil dealer
Thank for that but could you explain why you put holes only at the bottom and not at the top?
Air will blow in the holes at the bottom to feed the fire with oxygen. The top is open, so you don't need any holes up there.
Thanks for the comment
@@ultimatehandyman Thank you so much for explaining. 👍
I wouldn't call that an incinerator. That's just a burn barrel..
Some might call it a burn drum.
Ultimate Handyman Dum dum
What else could you use if you don't own a air chisel.
You could use a reciprocating saw or even a jigsaw. Failing that you could use an angle grinder, but you have to be certain that the drum has not had flammables in it!
Green roof growth
Hard Worker club hammer and bolster chisel will have the lid off in about 5 minutes.... that is how we cut them at work we arent allowed to use power tools on them because one did catch fire quite disastrously a few years ago
Cut the bottom off instead and the bung holes become 2 less air and drainage you have to drill
👍
I need to punch a specific size in a drum. whats the name of the device.. like a manual punch, thats spun with a wrench?
I think you mean a sheet metal hole punch- fave.co/2B3UZ1S
But I am not sure if they will work on a drum, I have used them at work on flat sheet steel- but never on a surface that is not flat.
@@ultimatehandyman Ahh thats it.. i dont need a flare die, but that is what i was talking about. I just didnt realize they were so expensive. for 2 holes. The tool you used, with the graduated drill bit. How easy are those to use for a specific size?
The step drills are very easy to use on sheet steel, I have used them loads of times.
ua-cam.com/video/YD-WcAZ_ynI/v-deo.html
I even bought some cobalt ones for use on stainless steel- ua-cam.com/video/fvumt2z0GLI/v-deo.html
I used the step bit method on the first incinerator. Very time consuming. I switched to cutting several large holes in the bottom so it resembled a five spoke wheel. On each spoke I set a clay brick and then set a grate from a Weber grill on top of that.
Thanks for the comment 👍
Why not use a can opener to open the drum
100 days later...
A sharp pick axe works well for punching the holes
👍
You can also use this same technique to kill a Dalek.
😂
Plasma cutter zips right through the lid.
👍
The easiest way to put holes in the bottom is with a gun. .22lr or 9mm work. Its much faster.
We aren't allowed guns in the UK or we would overthrow the Government LOL
when i make my burn barrel i make air holes allot easier and quicker with a few good swings of an axe close to the bottom. The barrel i use now is a bit smaller. I use used truck brake drums with the centers cut out and stacked one on top another they will probably out live me because they don't burn threw.
Thanks for the comment
Well surely you have to do something with the lid.. how will the smoke come out!??
You only put the lid on when it is not in use ;-)
Thanks for the comment 👍
@@ultimatehandyman ah makes sense!! Is it worth suspending what you put in some how also?? Thanks for your reply!!
@@HeatGeek There is no need to do that, I normally just put the stuff in, ensuring there is not too much at once. After a few hours there is nothing left but ashes at the bottom ;-)
@@ultimatehandyman thanks.. feel silly asking about the lid now lol.. want any heating/renewavles advice hit me up!
@@HeatGeek No worries, cheers ;-)
I have used a shotgun with a few rounds of 00 buckshot to ventilate one for this purpose before. This looks a lot tidyer.
Thanks for the comment
I do recall from my childhood that workmen when making a coke brazier from one (for night watchman and brewing up) used to take a few swings at it with a pointed pick axe. Technology has really marched on☺
my dad used to make these in Australia when I was growing up, dont remember how he cut the top?
From memory he placed a grille inside near the bottom?
But eventually outside burning in Tasmania was banned
"my dad used to make these in Australia when I was growing up, dont remember how he cut the top?"
He might have had a can opener specially designed for Fray Bentos pie tins.☺
Once the top is cut out I use two hammers to go round the rim and remove the sharp edges. I used a club hammer and cold chisel to cut the top and a large centre punch to start the holes followed by a tapered pin punch to get them to about an inch, one hole I made extra large and turn it into the wind and use a propane torch to light it, currently no lid, I just turn it on its side between uses.
Thanks for the comment
any ideas for loads of documents without an incinerator? shredding a huge pile would take an age.ideas anyone?
Have you got a BBQ, you could use that, or compost them (pour some water, or something less pleasant, on them as you put them in) dig a fire pit or stick them on a bonfire. Depends what resources / garden etc you have really.
no garden that i can burn in, i hate using a shredder as it will take a month of sundays, the only idea i have though of and yet to try, rip the paper into quartes or such, put into a bucket with water for some days or weeks and it should turn into some sludge, then let it dry and put in recycling wheelie, no idea if it will work
Yep wife has done that, it does mean that you have a bucket of mush to get rid of at the end though. Maybe stick some bleach in with it too. Should work. Also there are companies that do collections of sensitive docs but I think they are a bit pricey. What about work do they not have an industrial size shredder or sensitive paper collection that you can use on the QT?
nope no access to a pro shredder , dont wanna pay anyone to do so, didnt think about the bleach, might try one with and one without, i have a garage and time and a few buckets, i dont mind leaving them for some weeks, they can go damp into the recycling bin so long as they are beyond reading by then.
Sounds like a plan, never thought of them still being able to go out for recycling wet but suppose that is probably how they process the paper at the recycling plant anyway. Good luck!
It’s much easier to shoot some holes in the side
👍
can i ask where you got the aeg drill form I had m old set for 6 years and I am struggling to find anywhere in the uk that sells them
I was sent it to test out by a public relations firm to test out.
I've just looked on ebay and there are hardly any AEG tools for sale by reputable sellers!
wish I could do something like that I was given mine when I left school by a mates dad and now I have started a joinery apprenticeship it has more or less blew up on me no power left I have looked into having it repaired but I have been told it would cost in the region of £140 to repair and there's no way as a apprentice I can afford to pay all that out fantastic machines as well
£140 is very expensive. You can buy a brand new Bosch drill with charger and 4AH battery for £99 from screwfix- www.screwfix.com/p/bosch-gsb-18-2-li-plus-18v-4-0ah-li-ion-cordless-combi-drill/7434k
aeg are part of the ryobi group, got sold to china, i guess the old network that sold the german AEG isnt selling the modern ones. they need to get them into screwfix etc, but they will up against makita/dwalt and the usually good screwfix deals
how the hell am I gonna get a drum in London?
I bought my first one from ebay, you could also check Gumtree
Thanks for the comment 👍
Sorry, what's an err chisel? ;-)
It a AIR use compress AIR
how about a kicker>>>> hook up a leaf blower to lower part of the barrel and you can melt a whole car!! seriously I've seen it and it's hot!! not a car but you get the point. BTW great channel!!
I'm planning on making a furnace when I get time, I have most of the bits already. I was considering using the Dewalt blower, but then I found a fan from an old boiler- so I'll probably use that instead.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
save the furnace blower for a home made work shop ceiling mount air filter, at least with the leaf blower on the drum it's removable due to it's 3 /12 fitting and plus you may have better speed control
millf***y radio review soon ?
I've had that radio for a couple of years but always had something else to review.
The box is full of crushed aluminum cans which I used to have stored in my other garage, which is in the process of being sold ;-)
I'm going to attempt a garage tidy up later LOL
Air nibbler or air shears work better. For cutting top i used to use a stick welder on high amps to burn hole in barrel in seconds
Thanks for the comment 👍
SO THE VIDEO IS DRILL 8 HOLES IN A BARRELL....WOW THATS VERY EDUCATIONAL. LOL
Presumably an angle grinder will also work? Where did you get it for free? There's some on Gumtree for 10 quid. Cheers.
Yes, a grinder will work but you have to be careful not to put and sideways pressure on the disc.
I got it free from the site where I was working as it had fallen from a lorry and was dented, so could not be used.
for anything except light burning without holes in the bottom it will fill up with ash [and if lid not on maybe water] quick meaning tipping it all the time.
If you ever need a working fire [to get rid of a lot of stuff say on a site] that burns with little smoke, will burn everything and will burnout quick [one is supposed to stay with a fire until it is dead and not leave some slow smoker that burns all night which one sees all too often] cut holes in the bottom and put some wire mesh in and stand off the ground. A tap will drop out the ash which can be raked to one side. When you want it to end it will burn itself out in 30mins meaning safe to leave site and no all night slow smoker to gas locals.
Thanks for the tips ;-)
Err chisel
😜
Regular hole saws are for wood. DO NOT use them on a steel drum. Horrible suggestion!
😂
Not exactly the most environmental way of getting rid of rubbish, it seems some what antiquated in a day and age where we are digital and have access to alternative and accessible ways of disposing of paper waste.
I normally only use the paper to light the bin (before I put the tyres in it).
Thanks for the comment
LOL Hope you wait until the neighbours are having a barbeque or have washing on the line.
I am all for recycling. However there are items that cause more pollution and environmental problems recycling those items. The simple thing is use mason jars and glass getting away from plastic. Avoiding buying items in plastic containers and look for paper. You can compost items safely as well. This might sound expensive and time consuming. from personal experience you save money and burn items that will not cause problems you believe are bad for the environment. People did what I spoke to during the depression and the second world war. If you do not believe me check out Miles Stairs End of times survival and look at his writings on waste disposal.
Absolutely NO information gained from this video. Sorry mate good vid but na

That was a waste of time!
