- This very Simple Waste Oil Boiler is making lots of Awesome FREE Hot Water Forever and tons of FREE Heat. This is the first time I lit this homemade waste oil boiler stove and it was fantastic. A simple oil drum and a propane tank have become a super cheap way of making hot water for heating or washing. You can follow the build and make one of these yourself but this is experimental so be careful.

The oil burn chamber should be in the propane tank, whilst the water tank should be in the larger drum, so that ALL the heat goes into water. Otherwise, nice work.
Without space to do these projects myself yet, your video are saving me years of design and trial.

I'd love if the draw was powered by the heat causing suction. Rocket stoves use the barrel after the combustion as surface to effectively push the cooled fumes through the chimney due to rapid cooling after the burn.
Also looking into rocket stoves perhaps an earlier clean smoke could be achieved by having the flames go into a corner angle or a contained area using fire Crete and perilite straight away as a secondary combustion area heated by the first. Contained inward reflection heat in an area above the oil could avoid heating the burning plate below while insuring a complete burn before reaching the water just above.
My dream is a a hob like start from a biodigester, then wood or oil for fuel.
You can't do everything at once, seeing good methods for base future projects on is a great boost.
You know what it's like seeing a great shed project and thinking it's great..but you'd add 'this'. :)

Hello Theweescot. This one had been a while coming but apart from all the smoke from the paint it did a great job at burning clean. It was raining against the shed door today so I couldn't open it and fire the stove again just to clear the last of the paint. There will be some interesting plumbing soon. Anyway I bought an AHP AlphaCut 60 Plasma Cutter for myself. I am certain there are many other good brands out there as well but I am quite pleased with this one. It uses 'standard' consumables like tips and electrodes so they are available on ebay pretty cheap. If you were looking for a present for yourself, you'd be in heaven!

Hey Gerry thanks great job. I have a closed loop radiant heat floor in my shop. I use a 52 gallon electric hot water tank for heat but it gets expensive and I have tons of used oil. Have you come up with a way control heater by way of a thermostat.
Great idea! The more water tank surface area in contact with the heat, the better. Maybe a few baffles inside the 55 gal. tank might help...or maybe heat collecting baffles on the water tank...or both.?
Also, A 20" radiator hooked up to the hot water and a 20 inch box fan would do wonders for dissipating heat. You could also hook up the fan and a small water pump to a thermostat very easily.
Either way, I like it!
Hi SLRS Thanks. The plumbing end of things will get a little interesting when I connect this up to an underfloor heating system. The main thing I wanted to do with this odd looking boiler stove was to make hot water for a pressure washer but as it's setup currently in the shed I have some other things in mind. it's not efficient but I can just throw heat at it to overcome that deficiency. There are lots of things that would improve the efficiency but it is a fun and cheap little project. Thanks for the suggestions More developments on this stove soon. Cheers Gerry
Super heated steam was used during 1950's in Texas by US servicmen to run used fuel oil furnace on water line. Oil used to preheat fire pot and S.S. coil tubing + water to 1500 degrees. T fitting and extra valves mounted. When up to temperature, oil valve shut off. The resulting hydrogen and oxygen torch flame continues furnace running. 90 lbs pressure + 90lbs water lines with dual pumps and central motor with blower. U.S. patent application filed, but only resulted in final printing of 50% increase in efficiency with ordinary steam as only allowed to public. ( The change of high pressure to AMBIANT through tiny spray nozzel allowed for extreme vibration of vapor molecules that separated to gases,- at a much LOWER unusual high temperature. ) A much smaller demonstrator was built and shown to Senater in large wooden box with fire brick chamber and steel ring with holes- like coleman stove. Units have to be restarted on fuel oil.

Im about to do the same but opposite a 30gal drum in a 55 gal so the water will surround the burn chamber.. Im thinking ribbon burner pointing down from the top... If had a difficult time getting waste oil hot enough to do well heating water but I am trying to heat a pool..

Hi Terry. Yesterday I knew there was going to be a lot of smoke from the paint but the flue stack was burning clean even with the paint burning off the inside of the oil drum. I live in rural Ireland so there aren't many neighbours.What are your neighbours like with noise if you are drilling or grinding. Thanks for commenting. Cheers Gerry

nice! I do like your video's & watch your channel a good bit! We have 3 vehicle's & just with the normal oil changes, the oil adds up but, no where near enough to heat any building through out the winter season but, it definitely would help & the second I do build a garage, you can bet that I will be making my own oil furnace! Any other tip's to obtaining used oil? I need to build a garage & start advertising for my own auto repair shop! Simply doing oil changes & tire repair would probably be the majority of customers besides friends wanting freebies on their vehicles! I HAVE ALLWAYS DREAMED OF HAVING MY OWN SHOP! It's just that my location is miniscule, in a small area, away from the beaten path!

Hi M35a2guy I want to make this portable in a trailer. by making it forced air I can make the flue smaller. I think I will do a version of this that is normally aspirated too before I take it from the shed. I will do the plumbing next and then a fan free version.. Hi Gerry. I think ill make this to run some radiators - my modification if i was to use your idea would be to make the gas bottle sit in a tight watertight sleeve so that the flame doesn’t hit the bottle direct but also if it leaked it would be in a bund effectively. I would weld the tube with a cap on the bottom do the bottle sits inside that and weld the top to the top of the drum.
Hi James. I will be connecting this to an underfloor heating circuit soon. I have other boilers but will connect this for the craic. It would be very easy to make this into a back boiler design. Just weld a pipe up the center and you have a jacket. The flue gases could travel around it and through it. The efficiency would be much greater. Would be easy to convert an old oil boiler too. If you used a gas water heater tank with the pipe and deflector plate instead of the propane tank the flame could weat up through the center and around the sides, The exhaust would Y together above the unit and exit out the top. Lets find a quiet air blower that's cheap to run.
Hi Phat Mike. Those heaters would be perfect but unfortunately not widely available here. I will cut a 5 inch hole in the top and bottom of the propane tank and weld in a 5 inch pipe and send the flue gasses through. This will increase the metal to water ratio recovering more heat. Very nice prototype. I wander if connecting it to a car rad, and thermo-siphon the water through the rad, would produce as much heat as your original garage heater your had in this space?

Hi Mrdubomb I will be making a unit very soon but depending on where you live there are boilers that make an easy conversion and can be had for scrap value. A flue pipe welded into the propane tank can be more efficient. Hope this helps Cheers Gerry
love the heat it puts out now I need to down size it to run hot water for my preasuer washer i only need to run the washer for 20 min at the most and just need 55c water and heat my small shop 20 x20feet would you empty the tank when not using water or would you keep it wet. thanks gor the videos please keep them coming
Hi hd the wise. If I were using it as a stove mostly I would use it dry but it will burn the paint off the propane tank. these things are really robust so they would take running dry for quite some time. These things are so cheap to make that I think I would make one dedicated for hot water and a stove as a space heater. I have some more to do with this one connected to the flue in the shed. The small building beside the shed is underfloor heated and I might connect it up for kicks to this or similar boiler. Thanks for the comment Really appreciate the support. Cheers Gerry

Nice prototype Gerry. It's good to watch your videos they save the rest of us sometime by watching your trial and error. I built a forced air burner but didn't like it just a little to noisy. So now I'm putting a reasonable copy of your naturally vented burner. The only change I made was to make it square as I have access to some flat stock and it's easier for cutting holes and such with the Metabo. My only questions are How do you figure the size of the burner (area wise) and are you a plumber by trade? I had a great time visiting my daughter in Scotland. Keep up the good work love your videos . PS The plumber bit is only because I am also a plumber in the states.
Hi Michael. I am a plumber here in Ireland and I also prefer the normally aspirated burners. I will make this stove into a fan free model soon but I wanted it poweredso I could keep the flue length to a minimum/ I want to make this unit portable. The problem with this design of burner is that they need the vaporising pot or burner to be red hot and there is a limit to the downsizing without forced air. Lots of the lads are asking for a smaller unit so I will go at it soon. Where in the state are you based Michael. Cheers Gerry

Bhi Gerry does the copper pipe go all way into burner is it does does it not melt
Hi Mick. When you see the stoves glowing cherry red they are between 650 and 800°c approx. copper melts at about 1000°c As the oil is flowing into the burner it cools the copper. Om some of my other burners I have the copper pipe inside a steel pipe and I blow air down the steel pipe. Works great but I have yet to melt the copper. Have melted brass and aliminium no problem though. Thanks for the comment Cheers Gerry👍
You should take extra care when the paint fumes are coming from the barrel because it usually contains lead in the paint.I would of burnt it off first and stood outside or put the Barrel outside for the test.but definitely wear a gas mask just to make sure.I've got a lot of experience when it comes to burning and smelting and have breathed dodgy fumes in and it's made me very ill👍great invention and video anyhoo😉

Gerry, doesn't having to use a fan rather spoil the whole "free heat" idea and add unnecessary complication? The naturally aspirated burner would cope just as well wouldn't it?

This is probably a stupid question but why doesn't the oil from the drip tube catch fire and travel up to the oil bucket?
Hi Rick. If there was an airflow up the pipe that could happen but the stove has negative pressure at the point at which the oil falls into the stove. As new oil falls from the tube it cools the feed pipe too. hope this helps Cheers Gerry👍

Only if you were constantly running the water through the pipe and drawing it off. Otherwise you would very quickly blow something up. Water expands 1,800 times when it turns to steam. This ferocious heat would be creating instant steam in small diameter pipes.

@@flopop4940 I disagree. The intense heat of this system on a thin copper pipe would cause flash steam in places, hence an explosion. I have seen this on other videos. You need the larger surface area and a big volume of water to modulate the temperature rise. You're looking to blow yourself up, or to influence someone else to be foolhardy enough to try your suggestion.
Water only gets to 100 degrees C then turns to steam instantly, and expands by 1,800 times.
The heat generated by this burner is much too high.
If you had a pressure relief valve, soon all the water would be expelled as steam and you would run the pipe dry.
Ernie and Erica Eisner teach Fire science in their Rocket Stove business. The first essential of building something like this is SAFETY. Avoiding the BOOM-SQUISH result.
Boilers are extremely dangerous. Not to be played with.
@@rubygray7749 If you run 5-6 radiators on an closed circuit with an circulating pump, expansion tank and pr valve is just the same as you have in your central heating boiler. I have one in the making, will test soon. I'll let you know if my house has changed the post code!
Serious question: what would actually happen if water was allowed into the burn chamber? Would there be a difference between liquid or steam?

What country are you win it’s easy to see it’s not the United States from some of your other videos. I assume you install wood pallet and gas stoves as your business? And where are you are you talk about pellet stove‘s with the water jacket and that is the cats ass however we can’t buy them in the United States? Because I think that could be adapted to almost any heating system with baseboard hot water and it would put the oil business out of business. I just purchased a Ravelli pellet stove model is the holly and it has three thermostats three separate zones of heating and it really is One of the best pellet stove you can buy in my estimation! And when the day comes when I can buy the Ravelli or a competitor is brand with the water jacket it might oil fired heating system will sit on the side and watch my pellet stove heat the whole house and my hot water! Any chance you wanna sell me a pellet boiler stove I have it delivered here in the states? Have made a very similarly designed boiler, but it seems it does not transfee much heat into the water tank. I am using forced air too, which makes it smoke out the door a lot.
I only have one section basically of chimney on it outside, do you think if I add more sections that would improve it?
The of my tank is not as close to the top of my burner, but the flame I get is licking the bottom of it regardless.

Just as liquid propane expands 270 times when it turns from a liquid to a vapor, water is much more violent water turns to steam at 1600 times the liquid content so 1 gallon of water will make 1600 gallons of steam and my guess is that all that volume trying to get up at 6 inch chimney affectively plugs the chimney off there for all your gases are forced back into the building? I would assume that if the water gets into the oil itself as it makes steam it would carry some of that oil with it therefore expanding the fire anywhere the steam goes? Or does the water just boil off slowly and go up the chimney?

Why not set the unit outside and pipe the hot water in to a radiator inside with a fan blowing through it to heat the shop? Safer, and no worries about water or oil or even smoke then. JMHO

I do wish you would concentrate less on spectacular incendiary clickbait and more on practical, SAFE alternative heating and cooling devices that can realistically be home made and safely operated.
