  • Make your own box cushion with continuous boxing following this tutorial. This technique is the tried and true traditional way a cushion is made by using a top and bottom plate of fabric and cutting boxing. However, this boxing wraps around the two front corners in a continuous piece and is joined up to the zipper plaque at the back. Making a cushion like this means it can be made to almost any shape and size and a piping can be added, if desired.

    THE KEY FACTS WHEN MAKING THE TRADITIONAL BOX CUSHION WITH CONTINUOUS BOXING:
    • Moderate complexity and construction time.
    • Can be a square, rectangular or irregularly shaped cushion.
    • Fabric is cut into two plates for top and bottom, a continuous boxing
    strip, and a zipper plaque strip.
    • Piping can be used for the top and/or bottom edges, or neither.
    • A zipper is installed in the back boxing.
    • No seams on the boxing at corners.
    • Bottom can be decorative fabric or be a less expensive cushion
    underlining fabric.
    • Flippable if decorative fabric is used on bottom and shape allows.
    • Pattern matching is possible with effort, except side boxing.

    Do you have any videos that show gluing the polyester batting on both sides of the foam for extra comfort ? How would that work with the fabric calculator if I want to add the batting? Thank you.

      Yes, it is a very old video, but here it is: ua-cam.com/video/sPQ5Zj9FUAU/v-deo.html. To use the fabric calculator with foam and a batting wrapped around it do the following: Wrap your foam in batting then compress the assembly with your hand laying it flat on the batting wrapped foam and apply a few pounds of pressure. You should notice that your batting compresses down to about half its original thickness. That measurement should be entered in the Sailrite fabric calculator. AN EXAMPLE: 4 inch foam with 0.5" batting wrapped around both sides would probably equal a thickness of 4.5" (After compressing slightly).

    What sort of fabrics does the hot knife cut?

    • @SailriteDIY
      @SailriteDIY  Місяць тому

      Almost all synthetic fabrics, from Acrylic, Polyester, Nylon and more. It does not work well for cotton fabrics.

    Will the double side tape you use gunk up needle or sewing machine?

    • @SailriteDIY
      @SailriteDIY  2 місяці тому +2

      If you sew through the double sided tape when sewing cushions, that is not good, except for the zippers. Why? When you turn the cushion right side out it will show up at the seam area. That is why we use an 1/4" Seamstick for Canvas and Upholstery and a 1/2" seam allowance. Using basting tape (Seamstick) for canvas on a very light weight fabric may gum up the needle rather quickly because the lighter fabric does not have the larger fibers or weave to help clean the needle as it exits the fabric. In those situations it may be best to use pins to hold the fabric in place as you sew. A gummed up needle and parts can be cleaned off with some rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball or Goo Gone (we do not sell this).

    Why no silk film?

    • @SailriteDIY
      @SailriteDIY  8 місяців тому

      You can use silk film, but I wanted to show that it can also be done without it. It would make it easier to insert the foam in the cover.
