- Quick video to demonstrate how to remove a failed handbrake servo to continue driving or to allow vehicle to be towed without the use of skates and hopefully removing some of the drama that seems to be associated with many Tesla recoveries....
Have a service call Wednesday morning for a failed right rear handbrake caliper. Won’t release. Because of this video… I can now drive to the service center 45 miles away, saving hundreds of dollars. Thank you thank you thank you.
This got me back on the road for the final 200 miles home. Thank you!
An excellent instructional video for Tesla owners :)
Ian Trott thank you 😊 👍🏻
Finally. Good resource and safety. let's see what other Tesla stuff you got ❤🎉
Finally some useful Tesla repair information! Thanks!
Important: before you jack a Tesla always set it to jack mode, if you got the air suspension. :)
no air on mine :-) but good advice, cheers
It's not just Tesla. All cars with air suspension has to be put to maximum elevation before jacking them up. The only difference - Tesla calls it jack mode :)
jur4x nah, jack mode does not bring it to the highes suspension level but disable the auto leveling, see it's a "smart" suspension, so it's autoleveling.
If you jack up one wheel it might try to accommodate this with changing the hight of the other ones.
James and Kate yep, I know you got the coils. :)
Ruben Kelevra yep, I jack up loads of JLR stuff, never touch the suspension until afterwards, all the way and reset ride height, no problem 😊👍🏻
James, I have got to hand it to you...I would be terrified to play with those parts, and you do it with no fear of messing it up...Wow.
Arnold Winters it nothing Arnold. I'm qualified to work on vehicles and this system is no different to any other car. Just happens to be on a Tesla. The car is very quick to adjust itself so its working within its set parameters
Thanks man , life saver .. to these Model S 🍋🍋🍋😂😂
As a general rule I loosen the lug nuts slightly with the tire still on the ground. Same with the finale torqueing when replacing the wheel.
eb1888 if I don't have a gun I would normally do this too
eb1888 well, without a gun it's extremely difficult to not do it with pressure on the wheel. But with a gun - no issue.
Thanks, that's very useful as my auto handbrake is making a weird noise and reluctant to engage/disengage.
Excellent video! BTW Jack mode & tow mode for air suspension and tow mode for standard suspension
At the UK Tesla. scramble today it was noticed that not all Tesla Model S have the separate hand brake calliper. Our 2017 60D doesn't.
Tesla Adventures can you take a picture of your rear wheel for me? Be interested to see what's gone on. I was looking at a 2017 P100D last week and that was the same setup as ours.
I just wanted to add as I got stuck with this process but the 14mm does not open the stuck calliper and might end up bending it stripping it. I had to take the calliper out by taking 2 bolts and hammering it upwards.
Great Video. My Model S handbrake is sticking occasionally and the servo(s) have gotten really loud. Do you think it would be worth disassembling the servo as you show and putting some grease in those gears? I could just replace the whole assembly, it is not that expensive. However if just putting some grease in there fixed the issue that would be great.
Your gloves made me laugh. It happens every time lol
PhilipR144 true, not worth wearing them 😂😂😂
James and Kate whatever keeps the finger nails clean! lol
looking at your wheelarch , I forgot how dirty cars get in England, we have very few Diesel's here, just a tiny percentage, all the underneath of my car is clean and I've never jet washed it , I used to jet wash and wax oil every year in England. another thing, I used to clean the inside of the windshield every week , and now every 3-6months , yet I live in a city. I have seen a tesla's being dragged
Mark Tiller it certainly does get dirty. We have to clean the S every week or it does look awful. 1 long journey and it needs another clean. It's a constant cycle 👎🏻
Grate! Change pracking pad very esaly!
Saved my day, thank you!
That's a plus with the hand brake sticking , do you get a do it yourself repair manual when you buy a Tesla
Of note is that starting somewhere between July 2016 and March 2017, I don't know when, there is no dedicated caliper for the parking brake anymore.
Francis Galiegue have seen this. They seem rather sporadic presently, possibly as they use up old stock. Cheers 👍🏻
Great video! I have the caliper off the car but I'm struggling to turn the caliper piston with the 14 mm spanner. Can these caliper pistons get stuck inside? If so can they be lubricated for smoother action? It looked like in your video that you turned the piston with your fingers after using the spanner. Cheers
You don't mention a torque setting for the servo bolts, James; I imagine it would not be difficult to over-tighten them.
great assist here! awesome. I always like seeing people work on Teslas. What is the true issue/cause i wonder.. perhaps in my double speed watching i missed the diagnosis? Keep up the good work! ... Also, just interesting food for thought, did you know America we exclusively use the word 'floor' for indoors areas? unless there is interior flooring installed on the ground outside, then we say floor... what a weird evolution of the language. Its the kind of wierd like when my kids slap on the back of the head and i say "quit hitting me in the back of the face!" That is the same kind of weird as using the word floor when talking about the ground outside. Same language we just, ...well.. changed it..
TRY to HELP you no actual fault with ours but apparently the handbrake servos are failing in the on position preventing people freon moving the car.
nice. better than getting stuck the other way in those emergent cases. this should be a simple recall at worst i would say.
TRY to HELP you I think they have instigated that already
Is it possible for those parking brakes to bind or warp against the rotor? I have a squeak as the wheels turn at low speeds. As if something is catching against the rotor.
Hi James. Just been watching your i3 videos. Very informative. Did I miss something inbetween, you no longer have them? Any reason for moving them on? I'm researching for a possible purchase.
Michael Banks we didn't own the i3, just borrowed it. That said, it's a great car and if we didn't have a Tesla we'd have an i3 for sure 👍🏻
Hey James, great video - I’m actually going through this now. Trying release the parking brake. My 14mm spanner doesn’t want to open the star shaped bolt.
Any idea how else to loosen that final bolt/gear/cog?
Hi, Thom. It's tight, it needs a good yank to get it free if the calliper has seized.
Are you planning to keep Model S or getting Model 3 after the lease is up?
ephphatha230 good question. We love our S, but the idea of a 3 at so little money sounds awesome. I think our lease will be up before the Model 3 is available in the UK fully so we'll see then. I think it's fair to say that 60 kWh is easily enough for us so the Model 3 should cover all bases.
Hi, just replaced handbrakes but it keep coming up this msg "parking brake not applied" Any tip? Only when i press for parking and not while driving.
I got "parking brake not applied message even after i have replaced the brakes. Any tips?
Why does this happen? I’ve had mine for 1 yr, 50k miles.
"Kate's got a heavy right foot", you what mate?!
Kallenator1988 she drives it like she stole it 😊
Thanks for sharing your video! I have a similar issue. If the park break works, but the system in the model s (85D) disagrees with messages "park break not released / not engaged ", however the park break seems to work mechanically, how can I reset my system? Or is it the sensor perhaps? Or maybe this trick will reset the sensors? Cheers!
Hello i have the same problem with my P85, did you find a solution ?
What happened to your gloves? :)
James Knight too much hard work 😂😂😂
James and Kate I only use Nitrile grip gloves, like these, except for work like using a angle grinder or EP hammer drills. Then I use the second type:
www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00P4PJOVM/
www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000XS31EG/
(You can find both a lot cheaper on the net) :)
Do you work for tesla? Only 75NM thought it would be more than that
Karim Benallal no i dont, and it's 175 not 75, probably didn't pronounce it properly
Wrench with torque limiter... I need one of those! :)
jur4x a real necessity tbh. I wouldn't be without it
You didn't use an axle stand despite claiming it was in place out of shot
Are the caliper bolts "single use" James?
David Fisher honestly I'm not sure, but generally they are reused but need a reapplication of locktight. That said, I did t remove them, only the 3 for the servi which can be used again and don't require any locking mechanism.
David Fisher servo
David Fisher no problems 👍🏻
This probably is the case for a lot of modern cars with Electronic push button parking brakes.
Absolutely, I see 3/4 of these a week.
That's why I like usual handbrake. And overall simpler cars.
jur4x well, manual handbrakes sucks. The car of my mother need to be put in gear on a slight hill, the handbrake wouldn't hold it. (The standard small cars in Germany are all manual transmission).
+Reuben, a weak handbrake is technically illegal in the U.K., but you're right about parking on a hill with the vehicle in gear. Learner drivers also used to be taught to turn the steering towards the kerb when parking on a slope, simply because handbrakes can fail.
Ruben Kelevra I never have to put my car in gear. Handbrake works fine. 2014 Seat Ibiza. manual, just like other 70-80% of cars in UK.
I'm not sure how important or even interesting this is. On seeing the name of this video, I assumed that the Tesla had had a fault and you were showing how you fixed it. In actual fact, it's just a tutorial and the Tesla has been fine. I guess it's just an impression thing - but the name of the video perhaps gives an unintentional, slightly negative opinion on the Tesla. Does this make any sense?! :-)
Lee Oades hi Lee, there is a recall on Teslas for this fault, so that was the purpose of the video! Sorry if not clear. 😊
Ah! Ok, that makes perfect sense. I'll bear it in mind when I've got one :-)
@@Jamesandkate Hi, what years cover the recall on the S
I'll keep my Hyundai i30. The handbrake always works!
And they're a good car. there was no issue here with mine, purely a demonstration. That said, i'd keep the Tesla :-)
It was a joke!
bobdadruma I got it
Did you guys win the lottery or something? You seem to have a lot of free time...
willcant quickscope you're joking surely. Made this in Kate's lunch break and I'm on nights. We just manage to squeeze it in
Wow, kudos to you guys! With the amount of work and effort that goes into this channel, I just assumed you wouldn't be working. That's very impressive, you should definitely start a Patreon or something.
willcant quickscope we pondered but we support fully charged. That's a real Patreon page that need support and the content is amazing and well ahead of anything anyone else produces. However, thanks for your comments, making the videos do take plenty of work, but we both enjoy it. Feel free to click on some adverts, that will raise a little revenue that we can invest in to new equipment 😊👍🏻
👍🏻
"Quick"? Yeah, no.
