Practice unclipping until you can do it automatically. If you have to think about it practice more. Not on a public road.
Or just put on flats because clipin pedals are fucking stupid and help nothing in real world use off the race track.

Top tip: as the initial thumbnail shows don't attempt to ride your bike on its side as forward progress will be severely hindered.

Semi-trucks can be annoying in traffic too. But we don't get mad and aggressively pass them by while yelling "get back on the sidewalk" because even the most ignorant motorist understands that the sidewalk is for pedestrians, and is no place for a vehicle. Bikes are also vehicles. And in many places, bikes are just as illegal to operate on the sidewalk as a car.

Good points, however, that's not how you oil a chain. When you pour it on the outside like in this video it get flung all over when the place due to centrifugal forces. It's better to apply oil on the inside of the chain, then the centrifugal forces drive the oil into the chain, between the plates and links (where you want it). Any oil making it all the way through to the outside should be wiped off. ;)
This. I like to put a single drop on each roller on the top side of the lower chain run, which is the inside.
Patrick94GSR Yes exactly, I do the same. Then I spin the crank arm backwards for about 30-60 seconds. Once I can see (or feel) the oil coming through the outside of the chain I wipe the chain completely.

I bought my first bike in 35 years, a couple of months ago and I had no idea how much bicycles had changed. My biggest issue so far (apart from being extremely unfit) is getting used to the gears. It has 27 gears but I've no idea what the most efficient way to use them is. I tend to flick the little levers like a mad man until i find a gear that makes it easiest to peddle.

This was helpful. About to start riding my bike to work, 6 kays each way with a 140 meter height difference. I am a long way from being a cycling enthusiast but maybe ill get the bug. Also i used motorcycle chain paste on my chain and it seems to have worked fine. However i am using a nearly 15 year old cross country mountain bike with slicks on it that i've ressurectted from the garage. So probably it doesn't matter. If it lasts just a few months i can then buy a slick road bike.

I put engine oil on my chain and use wd40. I watch this show and I laugh a bit each time they tell me off. I am a bike courier 10 hrs a day in Scotland and the combo seems to work fine in the snow and rain haha .

Another tip you could add regarding gears is not to ride on both the smallest or both the biggest cogs. I've noticed a lot of people doing that in a group I've started riding with and you can hear the chain is taking more strain, it does the drivetrain no good.
When he said "rain capes" I immediately thought of a rider with a big cape flapping behind in the wind like a super hero. Do Brits really put a lot of their cycling gear in the drier? Socks are about the only thing I dare put in the drier, it will all shrink up.

Yes, Brits are obsessed with driers. If you're lucky like me, you have a sizeable rack (on a pulley) to dry all your clothes on, so you never need to use a drier in the first place, let alone worry if your cycle top has shrunk to the quarter of the size it was. I don't know why people even use driers. Just hang clothes on a portable clothes rack or pulley rack. In the summer you can dry them outside on a rotary. If you plan ahead well, then you're kit will dry in time for your next ride.
@@robtyman4281 About 6 years ago we sold our house and left the refrigerator, stove and cloth washer for the new owners (If they didn't want it...we would've brought the appliances to the curb). They wanted and appreciated them...and asked if there was a clothes dryer?....we pointed to the ropes strung across the basement ha ha. We had enough ropes for a family of 6. We never owned a cloth dryer.

Bonking is real and it sucks! I've been 1 mile from home before and nearly incapable of keeping myself moving forward (mild bonk!). I fully bonked once, rested for a few minutes and then rode an additional 5 feet before I had to stop again. Not fun!
oisiaa I've bonked three times and it sucked equally each time. I'd say never again, but it will probably happen again.

Haha, yeah it's very real. I had it and had to ride another 6 miles to the nearest pub before getting picked up, By the end, I could hardly ride on any minor incline, I couldn't even see properly, I could only focus on a 1m patch of road in front of me and balance was going, I was swerving all over the place every time I changed gear. I got a few funny looks staggering into the pub asking for a pint of coke and 3 bags of nuts.

@sidmeister369er The squeek may be coming from a fixed part. Make sure there is no force-bearing bolt hole that doesn't have grease in it. I mean everything from the stem to the bar-ends to saddle and post clamps to bottle cages.

Can someone please recommend me a bike, really enjoying riding atm and on a rented hybrid bike by Dawes. Not sure whether to get a hybrid or a road bike? I have about £500 to spend and wouldn’t mind second hand. What models shall I look out for?
Going out without supplements is 1st and 2nd point, supplement including food and drinks, tools and spares, lighting, electronic equipments with batteries... I think it is only one point. Someone just concerning to the front but missed to observe surrounding. Unable to clip may also unable to clip firmly - unclip accidentally.
I tipped my bike over on the first day while riding it home from the shop. I didn't have the type of pedals where you clip special shoes into them, but I didn't have little strap harnesses that you slide your toes into. Completely forgot about them when I stopped at an intersection. lol

Castrol motor oil alone, no. but Castrol motor oil combined with a bit of marine grease is chain lube gold! Makes a nice thick cream. i generally relube my chain almost every ride when using triflow. with the motor oil marine grease mix I relube about once a month.
Great vids GCN! Do you have any tips on walking in road shoes? Not that I wish to do a lot of it, but commuting or stopping for a coffee sometimes require it.
You can get coffee shop covers for Speedplay pedals which are pretty handy, and we saw a good tip from James Huang the other day on switching cleats: twitter.com/angryasian/status/474650237043494912. Alternatively, just go for drive-thru coffee every time ;-)

I have always used Chainsaw Bar Oil on my mountain bikes and have for years, I have fount its better than most designed for bikes oils they are good but they are often thin and not very sticky and don't last long and don't provide the best wear protection, were as bar oil is is slightly thicker but super sticky so it sticks to the parts of the chain its needed and stays there.

Agree with all except for avoiding extreme cadence ranges. I believe riding through cadence extremes is part of good training. It engages muscle fibers you normally would not engage. That's why I ride SS.

This is the recommended position if using cleats. When already on your side it is harder to fall off at traffic lights.

It just a zoom out video editing trick. He fell on the bag and then the bag was removed then the tricky transition. They are entirely different clips

i ride a road bike (also for everyday commute) from day one i thought i was having reach problems when riding on the hoods or drop, but i came to conclusion that my prescription glasses are the problem. because of the position of the glasses, i am forced to lift my head up so i can see clear and that causes terrible pain and discomfort on my shoulders and neck. now i'am considering to change to flat handlebars, do you think there is a better way, i would love to keep my drop handlebars.

Hi Stelios, you could try getting some prescription lenses in sports glasses. It isn't always the cheapest option, but it will allow you to keep riding drop handlebars.

Best you go to a good bike store ad get a good bike fit. Getting a shorter stem may be a good idea, but it also may impact other aspect of your bike fit.

I have done just about all of those mistakes in my early days lol especially funny(for anyone looking, I wasn't alone) was when I couldn't get my off my pedals as I was new to cleats and went over like a tree being felled.

+Tamas Murper My favourite lube used to be Castrol Chainwax, so yes, you can with the right type. You just don't want anything too 'heavy' - specific cycling lubes will generally be better.

Chain lube spray is what you use. Otherwise dirt starts building up on your chain. Since you change a bike chain more often than a motorcycle chain I might even say it is more of a problem on a motorcycle chain.
You don't use a bike chain more than some 1,500 to 3,000 km, depending on your style of riding, your performance and the quality of the chain. To some people that means a new chain every two weeks.

I read about clipless on forums before I got mine. Right after I got it I went to my nearest park and put on the shoes. It doesn't hurt as much if you fall on grass!

My favourite one, going out on the Derbyshire hills in the winter and your clipless pedals freezing in place. Approach a t-junction, try to unclip and fall over, much to amusement of drivers nearby.🙄
With the tumble-drying rain coats, use a dehumidifier. They're not too expensive and are extremely versatile lol.

I know this may sound insane but I have been using homelite chain saw oil for chain lube for about 20 years now. works fine. I don’t clean my bike as often probably should but I rarely have mechanicals and my chain life is not out of the ordinary. Of coarse I have more than one bike. About 7 one for however I am feeling that day or if one is getting worked on and is on the stand.
I've been using 30 weight for over 50 years. Works.

You guys should make a video on how to diagnose those very heard to find squeaking sounds your bike makes after awhile, i hate having to change my chain,bb,bearings etc and yet the bike still makes the noise what could it possibly be???
