  • Last week, Alex started to build his dream bike with an unlimited budget, using some of the most exclusive and beautiful parts, thanks to @CampagnoloSrl.
After building the bike and running through the full specs and details, he finally gets to ride it and decide if all this was really worth it…

Splurged in a way on my last build. Bought the parts one after one and in the end I never added it up to the last Euro. But the rough estimate is quite a bit more than I would have spent had I just gone into a shop and bought one off the shelf. Then again I think I still got a good deal with the end result.
Money no object: More italian style I think.

I already have my dream bike. It's a custom made travelling bike with a steel frame built by Robert Stolz in Zürich/Switzerland. I chose Steel because if the frame would brake somewhere in the Himalaya mountains any car mechanic or construction worker could repair/weld it. I bought it many years ago. Today Stolz' prices for the same bike are around
13'000 francs/euro. The only thing I would change is getting a Rohloff gear hub instead of a Shimano Deore XT.

I bought/built mine in the summer of 2021 when it was difficult to find a new bike of any kind. It has cost (so far) less than half of Alex’s bike. I’m way less than half the cyclist that Alex is, but I’d guess more than twice his age 😂. It’s a titanium Litespeed Cherohala all-road/endurance bike with a full Ultegra mechanical groupset, mostly FSA aluminum finishing kit, Reynolds carbon wheels with 32mm Gravel King smoothies, and Fulcrum aluminum wheels with 35mm Michelin Power Gravel tires.

Depends on the stiffness. If the added weight makes you lose less energy to warping your frame then it can be worth it. And it also depends where the added weight is. If it's on the frame it's not as bad as if it was on the wheels because that you notice every time you have to spin them up. What shocked me more were the spokes. Round spokes lol

I think you nailed it when you said all that matters is that you enjoy riding it and, every time you ride it, you just want to ride it more. I've just built a TT bike from a mix of eBay parts, Marketplace bargains and a few new bits and pieces and I adore it. On its first outing in anger, it beat one bike that had a single wheel worth more than my whole build. It's not perfect and it's not meant to be - it's mine, I built it and I love it. And it's a project so will technically never be finished. Good video - and we need to see more of that vintage team car too.....

Put better tyres and wheel sets and drive train. The hardtail cost (including purchase) is about £1150. The full sus is about £3500 (including purchase) it's as good as carbon wonder bikes, just as fast and capable as any comparative bike. Costs, a bit less than off the shelf but better components.

Great video, I love Alex’s enthusiasm and passion for his riding and his builds, but it does raise a question, do any of us have a dream bike build or do we dream of owning an off the shelf bike which already has the groupset we want?
I know we all tweak our bikes, changing wheels, tyres, saddles and cassettes but these are generally based around a bike we want that just needs a bit of tinkering. Other than building frankenbikes out of what we have available does anyone dream of a building a superbike from scratch?

Thos bike's beauty is eye watering.
I've built a few "grail" bikes over the years, but they were all BMX bikes, and all built over the course of weeks, or months. Some over years, as I upgraded parts.
Of all the wishes for the world, ending war, world hunger, etc. I would wish that each and every person would build thir personal grail bike for themselves. It can be done, if you adopt a long term approch, nad realize its a long term build.
Itll make you the happiest youve been as an adult, since you got that first shiny bike under the tree at Christmas, or for your birthday ❤️

I splurged for a custom steel Battaglin Portofino G with the same gruppo, Deda finishing kit, Garmin power pedals, and with Campy Levante wheels (cheaper than Boras, picked because they can take up to 40mm tyres). The total build is a fair amount cheaper than this, mainly because it’s steel, not titanium, but it’s still so expensive that I had to get insurance. Surprisingly, it’s lighter than your build at 7.5kg, probably because I’m small and light (172cm/61.2kg) and the bike is optimized for my size.

One question, why titanium instead of aluminum? Titanium is better in terms of mechanical strength, but in a frame the main limitation is structural, and both materials are similar in terms of stiffness. In fact, aluminum is more malleable, so it might be better for playing with stiffness.

Some people are having a stroke over the mass of the bike. I'm guessing the frame is a "large" as Shlomo is quite tall. A small frame would have cut that mass down a fair amount. Anyway, a dream bike is judged by far more than just its mass. And that titanium frame is going to be around a lot longer and looking lovely all the while compared to a light carbon frame that would crack if you looked at it sideways.
