We need Ali back to talk about To Pimp a Butterfly. GKMC was amazing but they stepped it up again with TPAB.
+GuerillaMusic7 I disagree. To Pimp A Butterfly is nowhere near as good as Good Kid... However, I have a feeling whatever they do next will be better than both.
+kfras0200 I agree GKMC was a better album.
GKMC is a classic based on Kdots life growing up. TPAB is more like a revelation after he entered adulthood and music industry that it’s not what he thought it is. Both are amazing in their own regard. I feel it’s hard to compare them as they both stand on their own merit. Kendrick had more time when he was making GKMC than TPAB. So there are more details and harmonies in GKMC. Anyway that’s just my 1 cent 🥳 All I know is GkMc and Kendrick saved my life so I’m thankful for that. God bless y’all
Well you are in luck
@@kfras0200 that's fair but To Pimp A Butterfly is undoubtedly a better mixed album

This Engineer Paesado was on point when he said "don't release, this record is good for two years" and now "To Pimp A Butterfly" in 2015. Engineers be knowing what albums are special especially when they been doing for a long time
***** we like minded man haha
The Last Kirin like minds
+Sean Ulloa That fucking grammer doeeee
TO.C MUSIC okay your point????
Sean Ulloa It's difficult to read lol
This is a very important show, especially for the newbies that want to see and hear what and how the professionalsl do what they do, and why they do it. It is a thought out informative show with real value coming from experienced professionals doing what us newbies aspire to do as well or better ( hahaha). What ever it takes, I hope that this show and similar shows continue to be there for us to learn from. Thanks so much.
What up O.G. you on here too I see! Slapp in the house!
Happy New year slap.
Happy New Year to you too!
I got the chance to meet Derek yesterday when he came to dc. This dude is probably one of the humblest and intelligent i have come across. He has amazing energy and the information he gave has really inspired me. I felt like giving up on being an emcee. now i just wanna push myself some more.
Mia Golde you like “can feel the energy in the air, it feel like I’m supposed to be here..” 🥳
They should really get Kevin Parker from Tame Impala. His album Currents would be so cool to hear about
Kevin Parker IS Tame Impala....
Kaz he did mix it though, and it does sound amazing. I would love to hear more about specifically his mixing
"This record is good for two years..." Dave Pensado predicted it first!
Very insightful. Ali is one of my engineer idols.

Hey, know any good channels or sites for mixing?
Pensado's Place does it. LOL@ Pensado at 22:00 "On "Bitch Don't Kill This Vibe"..."
i love your series. very insightful and informative // the only thing else i have to say is that i wish the guests were more often allowed to freely speak without interruption. thank you for providing something of such value.
WOW, just that little 10 seconds alone he played of the whole mix at the end of the ITL was incredible! Still can't be grateful enough for your commitment to the show Dave.. You rock!!
Thank you for this episode, Ali and the rest of TDE are very inspiring.
honestly, he didn't give away too much but ANYTHING from Ali is enlightening. I'm a novice but I learned a few things from this.
get an interview with Carlo ILLANGELO Montagnese. producer for theWeeknd
please
Haha they both said "high pas filter" when they were talking about "rolling off the high end" off a bass drum.
Great episode guys.
yes, or high cut filter
Good Kid Maad City was one of my most influential pieces of music as a teenager - I felt like I knew every single bit of it. Now I‘m watching this getting back to the album and notice all the tiny little details that make this piece of music so unique. Been into mixing music for 3-4 years but I never really noticed how different "unexperienced" listeners actually perceive sound - mindblowing
Very good interview, I knew right when I heard this album that the mixing was PERFECT...
It's great what you're doing guys, i need to catch up with all your episodes. Bring Run The Jewels and you'll make a lot of people happy.
hahahah Ali's dap to Herb hurt Daves feelings 🤣
Great video guys, I've been trying to find out more about Ali for a while, this has made things a lot clearer!
One of the my favourite Ep's, such good vibes.
Still come back to this
One of the best Pensado's Places ever (from those I've watched). Respect to Dave for loving good music regardless of genre. Great questions, great answers... great entertainment. More power! x
I got the record in vinyl sealed, I've heard it billions of times, it's genius. The mixing is iconic.
I appreciate your channel and you all sharing this! Thank you!
this is my first time watching you guys, this video gave me so much pride and inspiration to keep on making music and take more time with my tracks. I was getting proud of the fact that it took me much less time to finish a song but now i'm going to adapt the concept of perfectionism just like the greats. Thank you everyone at PensadosPlace for posting this video, it really meant a lot to me as i'm sure it does to a LOT of other musicians. god bless you all
Probably a crazy request... Could you get Richard D. James on the show? The knowledge the community could get from such a thing would be amazing, and he might give up some of his secrets!
Sam Buckley second this. But Aphex would never come on.
Pensado's Place it the joint!!! Dave and crew, thanks for dowing so much for the next generation mix engineers. Thank you. Salute!
Great show. I have so much respect for the engineering profession. Ali did an amazing job engineering that album. It is sonically one of my favorite albums to listen to.
thanks again...awesome to come from work and find another episode...you guys are the best...keep up the greatness

That's exactly what I did back when the show first started :) Go for it!
Incredible stuff
thank you, such a useful episode
Thank you for making these Videos. I will spread your channel, and everyone who gains should repay that for this knowledge to the least
Great episode! Lots of useful info. Dave... U DA MAN, FAM!
Not always. I keep top end in my kicks all the time. Especially if youre using 808s. The high end makes them stand out in the mix. Also boom bap 90s beats, i keep most of my high end. Especially if the kick is sampled from vinyl. Theres no cookie cutter way to kicks! Keep your top end on your next track and see how it sounds! Try it in a car with subs or a biiiig concert setups, thats why dance music keeps top end, helps it stand out amongst the bass!
thanks my kicks always get muddled behind the bass line
***** thanks for the tip
Rashad Elliott Side chain compression as well
really good fucking show!
this was great and it helps understand somethings a bit more!
This was a very great show and very much Inspiring.
I have 4 Months left to graduate, and jump into this field.
Thank you very much for the video's, and I will tune into your show more(Much More).
new favourite show!
"kick her out the studio ali" haha! love that song!!! Great mix on good kid maad city album
A Ralph Lauren Polo every show, good taste my friend
I believe the song they are talking about is "Sing about me" which sampled "Maybe tomorrow" by Grant Green
shout out to ali from RANDILIOUS !! AND PENSADOS PLACE SALUTE!
This interview was just as great as the album is.
This is amazing, btw does anyone know how to get that vocal effect that kendrick has on bitch dont kill my vibe??
that something that he didn't wanna tell
melo mutha Yeah i found it out, his voice is being formant shifted and is layered by harmonies from the female vocalist.
Agree totally with Sean Ulloa!!!
Sing about me is hitting hard now
This is awesome
Ali is the fucking King!
I've been wondering how kendricks vocals are so smooth and not bright and harsh like other rappers (drake, Lil Wayne) but it has a much more solid feel but u can semce a really smooth brightness hooooow does he do that
Great interview!
really cool insight into the album, thanks guys. as everyone is doing requests, i would personally love to see a mr david blake on here ;]
Ali has high frequency absorber on his head.
this is a great interview
Inspiring as always. Thank you! :0)
YO PENSADO, CUZ OF YOU OUR MUSIC SOUNDING NEXT LEVEL. THANK YOU. (YES I REALIZE ITS ALL CAPS)
you guys rock!
Question - How does Mixed By Ali get those vicious wet snap vocal sounds when his artist say words with T's and C's? I'm thinking it has something to do with saturation. Anyone got some helpful hints? This guy is so dope
Kevin Altenor it actually has do with compression. I literally juss discovered how to get that
how?
I just love the fact that at the 'higher echelons' of recording, the vibe is not dog eat dog, or mathematics vs feel. It's all about results.. We don't care how you get there, just get there.
im watchin 3 year later
Great Interview ..
THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME HOLY SHIT
Welcome to the bottom of the rap beef rabbit hole
Damn I thought I was the only one who wanted to see 40 on here!
You guys have to get Clams Casino on your show, that would be awesome
LET IT RUN ALI !!
@7:14 Gotta love the honesty hahaha
this guy makes me wanna go through my plugins and try to a specific sound for me
Furthering that, some big band records were nasty agressive to the point of distortion. Power lives in many places. Still, I love this interview. Nerdy hip.
Inspiring
la raza!!thanks dave
