+GuerillaMusic7 I disagree. To Pimp A Butterfly is nowhere near as good as Good Kid... However, I have a feeling whatever they do next will be better than both.
GKMC is a classic based on Kdots life growing up. TPAB is more like a revelation after he entered adulthood and music industry that it’s not what he thought it is. Both are amazing in their own regard. I feel it’s hard to compare them as they both stand on their own merit. Kendrick had more time when he was making GKMC than TPAB. So there are more details and harmonies in GKMC. Anyway that’s just my 1 cent 🥳 All I know is GkMc and Kendrick saved my life so I’m thankful for that. God bless y’all
This is a very important show, especially for the newbies that want to see and hear what and how the professionalsl do what they do, and why they do it. It is a thought out informative show with real value coming from experienced professionals doing what us newbies aspire to do as well or better ( hahaha). What ever it takes, I hope that this show and similar shows continue to be there for us to learn from. Thanks so much.
I got the chance to meet Derek yesterday when he came to dc. This dude is probably one of the humblest and intelligent i have come across. He has amazing energy and the information he gave has really inspired me. I felt like giving up on being an emcee. now i just wanna push myself some more.
This Engineer Paesado was on point when he said "don't release, this record is good for two years" and now "To Pimp A Butterfly" in 2015. Engineers be knowing what albums are special especially when they been doing for a long time
i love your series. very insightful and informative // the only thing else i have to say is that i wish the guests were more often allowed to freely speak without interruption. thank you for providing something of such value.
WOW, just that little 10 seconds alone he played of the whole mix at the end of the ITL was incredible! Still can't be grateful enough for your commitment to the show Dave.. You rock!!
One of the best Pensado's Places ever (from those I've watched). Respect to Dave for loving good music regardless of genre. Great questions, great answers... great entertainment. More power! x
this is my first time watching you guys, this video gave me so much pride and inspiration to keep on making music and take more time with my tracks. I was getting proud of the fact that it took me much less time to finish a song but now i'm going to adapt the concept of perfectionism just like the greats. Thank you everyone at PensadosPlace for posting this video, it really meant a lot to me as i'm sure it does to a LOT of other musicians. god bless you all
Great show. I have so much respect for the engineering profession. Ali did an amazing job engineering that album. It is sonically one of my favorite albums to listen to.
Good Kid Maad City was one of my most influential pieces of music as a teenager - I felt like I knew every single bit of it. Now I‘m watching this getting back to the album and notice all the tiny little details that make this piece of music so unique. Been into mixing music for 3-4 years but I never really noticed how different "unexperienced" listeners actually perceive sound - mindblowing
i can't believe no one put me up on this channel. this is easily the best video i've ever seen on youtube. inspirational as fuck and it's always great to watch other music nerds go back 'n' forth. cheers to you guys!
i love that these guys because they appreciate all things music, this channel cool for those who love to create music and want to know some of the nuances to making really good music
This was a very great show and very much Inspiring. I have 4 Months left to graduate, and jump into this field. Thank you very much for the video's, and I will tune into your show more(Much More).
Probably a crazy request... Could you get Richard D. James on the show? The knowledge the community could get from such a thing would be amazing, and he might give up some of his secrets!
I'm confused when they're talking about rolling off the high end on kick drums (27:00) but then proceed to talk about high pass filters which does the complete opposite? So is he talking about rolling off the high end or the low end?
my bad i just now saw the two responses but here's my datpiff, i have one mixtape on there but its mostly other ppl beats but im a producer too. just inbox on here if you're interested in a project.www.datpiff.com/profile/jahmalik
smileyface Depends really. Imaging is just playing with the stereo field. With lots of imagers, say the one in Ozone, you can specify specific frequency ranges and either spread them out (make wider) or bring them down closer (or completely) into mono. I think he’s making them wider though. Typically you want to widen higher frequencies (depending on the context) and mono the lower (sub, bass, sometimes a bit of low mid)
Question - How does Mixed By Ali get those vicious wet snap vocal sounds when his artist say words with T's and C's? I'm thinking it has something to do with saturation. Anyone got some helpful hints? This guy is so dope
Lead vox - DBX 160
Reverb ams r verb
Kick - pultech board eq
Snare - parallel q10
Hats - board eq plug-in smack
Bass synth - board eq g series
Plugin under 200 - uad ssl channel strip
We need Ali back to talk about To Pimp a Butterfly. GKMC was amazing but they stepped it up again with TPAB.
+GuerillaMusic7 I disagree. To Pimp A Butterfly is nowhere near as good as Good Kid... However, I have a feeling whatever they do next will be better than both.
+kfras0200 I agree GKMC was a better album.

Well you are in luck
@@kfras0200 that's fair but To Pimp A Butterfly is undoubtedly a better mixed album

Mia Golde you like “can feel the energy in the air, it feel like I’m supposed to be here..” 🥳

Great episode.
Anyone who is into rap or hip hop music, Kendrick Lamar's Good Kid, M.A.A.D City is your go to.
Haha they both said "high pas filter" when they were talking about "rolling off the high end" off a bass drum.
Great episode guys.

Great show. I have so much respect for the engineering profession. Ali did an amazing job engineering that album. It is sonically one of my favorite albums to listen to.

Hey, know any good channels or sites for mixing?
Good Kid Maad City was one of my most influential pieces of music as a teenager - I felt like I knew every single bit of it. Now I‘m watching this getting back to the album and notice all the tiny little details that make this piece of music so unique. honestly, he didn't give away too much but ANYTHING from Ali is enlightening. I'm a novice but I learned a few things from this.
Great interview Dave. Can't remember the last time I bought a gangsta record, but my gosh it is work of art. Awesome job Ali.
Inspiring as always. Thank you! :0)

Great Interview ..
This was a very great show and very much Inspiring.
I have 4 Months left to graduate, and jump into this field.
Thank you very much for the video's, and I will tune into your show more(Much More).
really cool insight into the album, thanks guys. as everyone is doing requests, i would personally love to see a mr david blake on here ;]
I believe the song they are talking about is "Sing about me" which sampled "Maybe tomorrow" by Grant Green
Sorry I couldn’t quite hear what mic he mentions at 25:00min? Cheers!
Sick interview
THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME HOLY SHIT
Probably a crazy request... Could you get Richard D. James on the show? The knowledge the community could get from such a thing would be amazing, and he might give up some of his secrets!
Sam Buckley second this. But Aphex would never come on.
This interview was just as great as the album is.
new favourite show!
This is amazing, btw does anyone know how to get that vocal effect that kendrick has on bitch dont kill my vibe??
that something that he didn't wanna tell
melo mutha Yeah i found it out, his voice is being formant shifted and is layered by harmonies from the female vocalist.
I'm confused when they're talking about rolling off the high end on kick drums (27:00) but then proceed to talk about high pass filters which does the complete opposite? So is he talking about rolling off the high end or the low end?
I think both? Maybe it alters depending on the drum sound
@7:14 Gotta love the honesty hahaha
"kick her out the studio ali" haha! love that song!!! Great mix on good kid maad city album
good interview!

YO PENSADO, CUZ OF YOU OUR MUSIC SOUNDING NEXT LEVEL. THANK YOU. (YES I REALIZE ITS ALL CAPS)
I just discovered that my absolute favorite episode of Pensado's Place (JJP) now costs 10 bucks? Will all of the past episodes be monetized? Drag. :(
la raza!!thanks dave
23:34 what does he mean by "I do a lot of imaging on my reverb?" does that meaning making it wider?
smileyface Depends really. Imaging is just playing with the stereo field. With lots of imagers, say the one in Ozone, you can specify specific frequency ranges and either spread them out (make wider) or bring them down closer (or completely) into mono. I think he’s making them wider though. Typically you want to widen higher frequencies (depending on the context) and mono the lower (sub, bass, sometimes a bit of low mid)
this guy makes me wanna go through my plugins and try to a specific sound for me
does any know what the monitors are that are sitting on top of his ns10s?
nvm, I found out they are avantone mix cubes.
I wish I understood half the terms you guys were discussing!
What plug in is he talking about at 26:22?
hey dave did you listen to control system?
Question - How does Mixed By Ali get those vicious wet snap vocal sounds when his artist say words with T's and C's? I'm thinking it has something to do with saturation. Anyone got some helpful hints? This guy is so dope
Kevin Altenor it actually has do with compression. I literally juss discovered how to get that
how?
You guys have to get Clams Casino on your show, that would be awesome
Dave is so damn cool
welcome back guys :)
LET IT RUN ALI !!
