Compunction is embedded in the Rosary when we say, "oh my Jesus, forgive us our sins and save us from the powers of hell..." The Rosary indeed is a weapon.

I was led to this while looking up why all of a sudden I can't pray the rosary without crying. And it's not just crying but it's accompanied with a feeling of deep sorrow for my sins and the sins of others. I didn't know it had a name. Been down that road. Nothing in our society honors purity. In fact, it’s seen as weird. God is not closed. Go to him in sincerity and watch father Chad Rippengers vids on spiritual warfare. While renouncing your sin, you can bind all demonic spirits attacking your imagination and emotions. Use your sacramentals such as Holy water, blessed salt etc. sprinkle and bless yourself and home. I am single and pray to Our Lady that she intercede and I be given graces of humility, chastity and obedience. The devil hates all of these things. If you feel an immediate lifting of obsessive thoughts, be sure it’s demonic. The lukewarmness you feel is acclimating to the sin. You’re tired and giving up and giving in. The devil is wearing you down. It’s not easy, but all of Heaven fights for you! God bless!
It could be an intellectual problem like in my case, once you read some stuff and clarify what purity really is and why it is so important then you dont have strange feeling about celibacy anymore but you feel blessed with it. I think you have that problem, maybe Im wrong, but I think you dont have literature that you need to sort those things out, like in mind you dont understand on what level you need to close yourself for lust since you think theres some benefit and good in it. How to obtain compunction (tears): 1. Pray for it. (St. Teresa took 20 years) 2. Meditate on The Passion of our lord. His wounds, his sorrows, our own lowliness, ingratitude that we have shown toward God, and the many things he did for us. Consider how our sins caused these wounds. 3. Think about your own future death. You will become contrite. What would it be like to die right now? If you do it, you will join St. Peter on the night of our lord's passion, causing us to weep those same solitary tears. Then we will cease to sin and nothing will be too hard for us.
I am embarrassed with who I am. I am a habitual sinner. I love humiliating my husband, recalling his dark past even when we agreed to burn it. I am a great sinner, too; but my husband never humiliated me. I pray to be like Doña Catalina, remorseful. I pray to have a humble heart like Mama Mary. Why do I find these so hard - and I get so frustrated then. I enjoy the pleasure of hurting my husband verbally, and then feel sorry for him and for what I have done after I see him either cry with surrender or rage in anger. I am helpless and maybe hopeless?

You are not helpless and hopeless. May I encourage you to try and pray all 20-decades daily?? Call on Mama Mary most vigorously....visit her place in Heaven and let her rub off on you mightily! By the time you get a hang of it, if you choose to start this spiritual exercise, it shouldn't take you more than an hour or an hour, ten minutes tops to go through all 4 Major Mysteries. God bless.

It’s the 1st time I heard the word “compunction”. When I think of nuns, all I recall is the image of brutal school masters hitting students with a ruler in the hand. In the Medieval Times, women desire to be contrite, pure and virgin. Now it’s the exact opposite.

Habitual sin stems from cowardiceness. For example, people would rather please the world in a crowd than please God standing alone. Satan makes everyone feel like friends. Satan often puts his own words in Gods mouth. He makes us fear him and hate God. So we choose him, and become hated by both. Take courage and don’t sin.
I feel great sorrow in my heart in relation to me having left the fire department. I'm not sure why, I need christs mercy so that my heart can stop feeling tormented. I'm in such despair that I don't know what to do.

I don't think compunction is the best way to overcome faults or sins. I can go in more detail if asked, but I think positivity/perfect contrition is better than negativity/imperfect contrition for changing.

They were beautiful prayers! And I believe in compunction, however didn't some of the Saints just take it a little too far? God does not want us to harm ourselves, does he? He says in Scripture that he does not require sacrifice, but instead a contrite heart. Well, a contrite heart is indeed a heart of Tears!! But we must be careful not to overdo that. I tried to do that and it made me so miserable that I was unable to function. I don't believe that God would want that because it caused me to go into despair. But my heart indeed is a heart of Tears and it will be until I enter Heaven. I've been disabled for 20 years and and very isolated at times, so I believe this trial which seems endless, is my path to heaven! Because every moment am I day is spent clinging to the Cross of Christ! And I do offer it up for my sins, for the sins of my family, and for all sin! Does this mean I have compunction? Praise be the Holy Name of Jesus Christ!!

I can understand that if one suffers you don’t blame it on God or Christ but to say that one calls upon suffering for oneself to prove to oneself that they love Christ is mere self absorption for better word that they wish to out do the Suffering of Christ to compare one’s own suffering to that of Christs suffering rather pompous I feel....God does not want us to suffer it comes about through circumstances. To say that one prayers to God for him to send down more suffering upon oneself is pretty useless...
Do you think that citizens of Nineveh enjoyed sitting in ashes and sackcloth? They suffered and did the penance. So yes, as long as our sufferings are not there to prove something... God can see our hearts and intentions.

They had no Scripture, no Bible to guide them; merely what they had been taught by Christ that they passed on to others (have a look at the Early Church Fathers or the document known as the Didache) - i.e. tradition. The "Hail Mary's" are Mary's Psalter and like the Psalms (www.rosarycenter.org/homepage-2/rosary/the-rosary-st-dominic/), are not intended glory to the or direct us to worship the Psalmist or Mary, but are designed to give all glory to God. We give honour to Mary (and you should too) for she was no ordinary woman, she was The "Woman", God's masterpiece of creation who He saw fit to call Mother. In growing closer to Mary, we hope that our souls too may "magnify" the Lord as perfectly as she did. Why should we honour His Mother? If an Archangel saw it worthy to greet Her with such reverence, what does that say for us.

Based what you have, said am I right in inferring that you are a person who subscribes to the belief of sola scriptura? If so, then this discussion/debate will never be resolved mainly because many things that Catholics do are not found in the bible are are based on the traditions of the early Church. I agree the bible does not state or teach the praying of the rosary in the bible. However, if you are coming from a sola scriptura position, I would like to state that just because something is not expressly mentioned in the bible it does not mean that it is anti-biblical or contrary to it. There are many recorded instances in the bible where it was noted that Jesus taught things - however those teachings were never recorded - see Matt. 13:3; Mark 4:2, 33; 6:34; Luke 11:53; 24:15-16, 25-27; John 16:12; 20:30; 21:25; Acts 1:2-3 for some examples of this. What we need to understand about the Rosary is that it consists of two things 1)The vocal expression of formed prayer and 2) A meditation on the life of Christ. Many protestant denominations will teach that by praying the Rosary that Catholics are 'worshipping' Mary and using 'vain repetitions' to do so. At this point I must make it unambiguously clear that Catholics do not 'worship' Mary - most the Hail Mary prayer is taken directly from scripture and the last part is simply a petition asking her to pray for us. Secondly, the issue of the Rosary being a vain repetition - it is not. What Jesus was referring to here were the gentiles praying mindless babbles to their pagan gods. If Jesus did not wish for any Christian anywhere to repeat prayers then he would not have taught the Lord's Prayer/Our Father. Another point I would like to raise here is to challenge the idea that protestant denominations believe that Catholics believe Mary is a mediator just like Jesus. This could not be further from the truth. Catholic believe that by her nature as the Daughter of God the Father, the spiritual spouse of the Holy Spirit and Mother of the Son of God that she is a powerful intercessor - not a mediator. An intercessor is one who prays, petitions, or entreaties in favour of another. Only Our Lord Jesus Christ is Mediator per 1 Tim 2:5. I hope this helps you in you understanding of the Catholic way of life. While you may disagree any any or all of the points I have made, it is just more for information rather to spark a debate. Albert Einstein said “Persistence is the most powerful force on the earth it can move mountains” Being persistent with the Rosary, in whatever matter you are struggling with will move mountains, I can testify to this.
I was led to this while looking up why all of a sudden I can't pray the rosary without crying. And it's not just crying but it's accompanied with a feeling of deep sorrow for my sins and the sins of others. I didn't know it had a name.
Edit: I wanted to add that while reading the comments I had no idea that this was a gift and much less a gift that is sought after so much. I praise God for giving me this grace!

I want to be a consecrated virgin but since childhood I’ve had the habitual sin of impurity. I used to cry so much after my son but now I’m so lukewarm, though I WANT to pray and cry. Been down that road. Nothing in our society honors purity. In fact, it’s seen as weird. God is not closed. Go to him in sincerity and watch father Chad Rippengers vids on spiritual warfare. While renouncing your sin, you can bind all demonic spirits attacking your imagination and emotions. Use your sacramentals such as Holy water, blessed salt etc. sprinkle and bless yourself and home. I am single and pray to Our Lady that she intercede and I be given graces of humility, chastity and obedience. The devil hates all of these things. If you feel an immediate lifting of obsessive thoughts, be sure it’s demonic. The lukewarmness you feel is acclimating to the sin. You’re tired and giving up and giving in. The devil is wearing you down. It’s not easy, but all of Heaven fights for you! God bless!

It could be an intellectual problem like in my case, once you read some stuff and clarify what purity really is and why it is so important then you dont have strange feeling about celibacy anymore but you feel blessed with it.

How to obtain compunction (tears):
1. Pray for it. (St. Teresa took 20 years)
2. Meditate on The Passion of our lord. His wounds, his sorrows, our own lowliness, ingratitude that we have shown toward God, and the many things he did for us. Consider how our sins caused these wounds.
3. Think about your own future death. You will become contrite. What would it be like to die right now?
If you do it, you will join St. Peter on the night of our lord's passion, causing us to weep those same solitary tears. Then we will cease to sin and nothing will be too hard for us.

I am embarrassed with who I am. I am a habitual sinner. I love humiliating my husband, recalling his dark past even when we agreed to burn it. I am a great sinner, too; but my husband never humiliated me. I pray to be like Doña Catalina, remorseful. I pray to have a humble heart like Mama Mary. Why do I find these so hard - and I get so frustrated then. I enjoy the pleasure of hurting my husband verbally, and then feel sorry for him and for what I have done after I see him either cry with surrender or rage in anger. I am helpless and maybe hopeless?

It’s the 1st time I heard the word “compunction”. When I think of nuns, all I recall is the image of brutal school masters hitting students with a ruler in the hand. In the Medieval Times, women desire to be contrite, pure and virgin. Now it’s the exact opposite.
All I ever heard as a protestant, accept Jesus as your personal Savior and it's all good. And when they shall say peace and safety then sudden destruction cometh upon them. Thank you Father for the Church.

I don't think compunction is the best way to overcome faults or sins. I can go in more detail if asked, but I think positivity/perfect contrition is better than negativity/imperfect contrition for changing.
Sin seems great, but just brings misery… No God, No happiness, etc.

They were beautiful prayers! And I believe in compunction, however didn't some of the Saints just take it a little too far? God does not want us to harm ourselves, does he? He says in Scripture that he does not require sacrifice, but instead a contrite heart. Well, a contrite heart is indeed a heart of Tears!! But we must be careful not to overdo that. I tried to do that and it made me so miserable that I was unable to function. I don't believe that God would want that because it caused me to go into despair. But my heart indeed is a heart of Tears and it will be until I enter Heaven. I've been disabled for 20 years and and very isolated at times, so I believe this trial which seems endless, is my path to heaven! Because every moment am I day is spent clinging to the Cross of Christ! And I do offer it up for my sins, for the sins of my family, and for all sin! Does this mean I have compunction? Praise be the Holy Name of Jesus Christ!!

I can understand that if one suffers you don’t blame it on God or Christ but to say that one calls upon suffering for oneself to prove to oneself that they love Christ is mere self absorption for better word that they wish to out do the Suffering of Christ to compare one’s own suffering to that of Christs suffering rather pompous I feel....God does not want us to suffer it comes about through circumstances. To say that one prayers to God for him to send down more suffering upon oneself is pretty useless...
Do you think that citizens of Nineveh enjoyed sitting in ashes and sackcloth? They suffered and did the penance. So yes, as long as our sufferings are not there to prove something...

It is obvious you don't understand the purpose of the Rosary from your assertion. Why would Christ need to meditate on His own mysteries? Why would the Apostles, first hand witnesses to His life, death and Resurrection need to meditate upon His life through the Rosary?
It was for people centuries after, a tangible means of uniting ourselves to the life of Christ and giving glory to Him through honouring His Mother. It is a Tradition that has a Scriptural Basis (The Our Father, Invocation of the Trinity, Archangel Gabriel's greeting to Mary, Elizabeth's Greeting to Mary). Before you say "Scripture alone" ; explain to me how the early Church functioned in the years following Christ's Resurrection. They had no Scripture, no Bible to guide them; merely what they had been taught by Christ that they passed on to others (have a look at the Early Church Fathers or the document known as the Didache) - i.e. tradition.
The "Hail Mary's" are Mary's Psalter and like the Psalms (www.rosarycenter.org/homepage-2/rosary/the-rosary-st-dominic/), are not intended glory to the or direct us to worship the Psalmist or Mary, but are designed to give all glory to God. We give honour to Mary (and you should too) for she was no ordinary woman, she was The "Woman", God's masterpiece of creation who He saw fit to call Mother. In growing closer to Mary, we hope that our souls too may "magnify" the Lord as perfectly as she did.
Why should we honour His Mother? If an Archangel saw it worthy to greet Her with such reverence, what does that say for us.

@@cbooth151 Hi, I think what is going on here is a divergence of Christian dogmatic beliefs. Based what you have, said am I right in inferring that you are a person who subscribes to the belief of sola scriptura? If so, then this discussion/debate will never be resolved mainly because many things that Catholics do are not found in the bible are are based on the traditions of the early Church. I agree the bible does not state or teach the praying of the rosary in the bible. However, if you are coming from a sola scriptura position, I would like to state that just because something is not expressly mentioned in the bible it does not mean that it is anti-biblical or contrary to it. There are many recorded instances in the bible where it was noted that Jesus taught things - however those teachings were never recorded - see Matt. 13:3; Mark 4:2, 33; 6:34; Luke 11:53; 24:15-16, 25-27; John 16:12; 20:30; 21:25; Acts 1:2-3 for some examples of this. What we need to understand about the Rosary is that it consists of two things 1)The vocal expression of formed prayer and 2) A meditation on the life of Christ. Many protestant denominations will teach that by praying the Rosary that Catholics are 'worshipping' Mary and using 'vain repetitions' to do so. At this point I must make it unambiguously clear that Catholics do not 'worship' Mary - most the Hail Mary prayer is taken directly from scripture and the last part is simply a petition asking her to pray for us. Secondly, the issue of the Rosary being a vain repetition - it is not. What Jesus was referring to here were the gentiles praying mindless babbles to their pagan gods. If Jesus did not wish for any Christian anywhere to repeat prayers then he would not have taught the Lord's Prayer/Our Father. Another point I would like to raise here is to challenge the idea that protestant denominations believe that Catholics believe Mary is a mediator just like Jesus. This could not be further from the truth. Catholic believe that by her nature as the Daughter of God the Father, the spiritual spouse of the Holy Spirit and Mother of the Son of God that she is a powerful intercessor - not a mediator. An intercessor is one who prays, petitions, or entreaties in favour of another. Only Our Lord Jesus Christ is Mediator per 1 Tim 2:5. I hope this helps you in you understanding of the Catholic way of life. While you may disagree any any or all of the points I have made, it is just more for information rather to spark a debate.
