hopefully you all enjoy! this video took a lot of work to put together, so don't be surprised if the next vid is a bit shorter and simpler haha

i just recenltly played this game and i have yet to see someone use the gasmask in this section. the gasmask just negates the gas. awesome detail.
I recently re-played the game but without VR and Jeff does work without it xD
I carried the respirator through the whole game for fun and realized it’s use during the chapter lol
It also saves you from barnacles
@@busterstar6716 and headcrabs
I always somehow lost any respirator I had
@@Thegoblin_ barnacles and headcrabs can rip them off
william smith I think it was just me that did that
His name jeff

Its an old meme sir, but it still checks out.
Possibly an homage to 'Scud: The Disposable Assassin'.
Well yes but actually yes
Him name jef
I had been wearing the gasmask since the painting area in the sewer and accidentally missed out on the gas part of this level my first time, f
Hah lol
The moment I fell in love with this game and decided I hated life at the same time was when I realized I had to let him out of the freezer 😂
For sure! This was the "Walter White assembling the broken plate" moment for this game.
Physics simulation in VR really should have been a no brainer from the start. It should be the bottom line of a truly enjoyable experience.
Jeff was probably my favourite part of the game, infact it's the only half life game I've fully enjoyed since Half Life 1 but I do think Jeff could've worked on a normal game but it'd have to be incredibly scripted, good video! only bit of criticism is the audio quality for the camera segments is very muffled
Cpt. CPT Yeah, amen. As someone who played HL2 before HL1, I found HL1’s combat to be vastly more enjoyable. The Combine are such a generic, bland, poorly-coded enemy, whereas there was not a SINGLE fight against the HECU Grunts or the aliens in HL1 that I DIDN’T enjoy. I really feel like the combat aspect of the gameplay in HL2(eps 1 and 2 as well) got drastically toned down in favor of taking a more direct approach with the story-telling, for better or for worse. I’ve enjoyed all the HL games equally, just for different reasons. Hopefully someday I get my life together enough to buy a VR headset so I can play HL:A.
@@CptCPT-dl9lh same here, i enjoy hl1 far more than hl2. For the record i've finished hl1 like 12 times and hl2 only once, every time i want to start a new game i stop after a few chapter because i get bored x)
My favorite parts were: the northern star, Jeff, the ant lion introduction, and the strider fight
Yeah sure it could have worked if heavily scripted... But it wouldn't be fun

Jeff was definately the scariest part of half life alyx for me. I have never been so scared in a game that I cannot think clearly, until I met Jeff. I had to take multiple multi-day breaks to think about the puzzles in safety.
I was able to beat him in a day, but that doesn't mean i wasn't shitting my pants, while i didn't have to take breaks with my headset off (didnt want to do that, just in case i put it back on later, only to find out i missed something also i didn't wanna break immersion) i DID however take breaks when i got into a safe spot, like the elevator, or that little space with the outlet to turn the elevator on, either way this part scared me so bad, i have never had a game do that to me before, that's what i love about half life alyx, it also feels like two of my favorite games mixed together, it felt like i was playing dying light and last of us, i really cant wait for half life 3 and i hope to god it's in vr, with the same exact fear factor.
Connor, one thing I gotta say about your HL videos is I LOVE the mini references to the games in the script, they're so clever and cool :)
Ain’t gonna lie when i saw Jeff the first time i was scared lmao I didn’t know what to do in the elevator part for a solid 2-3 min because I didn’t want to go near Jeff.
same i was shaking so bad lmao
Oh wow I didn't know you could temporarily disperse the gas by waving your hand. I love that there's so many mechanics in the game that it doesn't outright tell you.
The entire half life series in a nutshell
I never really thought about how valve packs a lot of areas in one section until now. Its really good for performance and gameplay. I hate games that have mini or full on cut scenes that add nothing but other than loading screen
I swear Everyone I’ve seen play this (including me because I played the game before I watched anyone play it) had the same exact reaction when the lights go out and discovering they had to go into the room they locked Jeff in
i quit for a day when i learned that. I just couldn't do it, lol
Truly a magical moment
I think I let out a few expletives.
I was wearing the blue hard hat throughout this chapter and that Larry guy complimented me
Video: 11 minutes long and posted 5 minutes ago
Comments: wow! Nice video!
As I was watching this I accidentally knocked a pot in my kitchen and I was so freaking scared thinking Jeff was going to come then I remembered this is irl
Weirdly, my reaction time in games like r6 or cod are horrible but when I'm playing this game I can catch that shit in a millisecond it feels like. I'm not sure why but I assume its the immersion of being in that scenario and terrified for my life
I think it's because R6 and COD are for multiplayer, both games are fast paced FPS games that are loud and feel crowded which makes you harder to react and concentrate. While HLA is more slower, silent, and more immersive, there's not too many things happenIng like in R6 and in COD.
@@lartts7483 and hla is in vr so its mostly just muscle memory to catch a falling object before it hits the ground. Especially in a situation like this one.
@@lartts7483 plus internet connection can make you feel slower
Jeff was probably my favourite VR experience so far. I hope more games like that come out.
Have you played budget cuts? If you haven’t, you’re probavly gonna love ADAM
Valve can’t count to three... “One... Two.... uhhh.... Alyx?”

An example of static half life levels. Ravenholm. My personal favorite part of all of half life so far. I’m yet to play Alyx
Alonso Reyes A DECENT AREA TO PLAY AND FOR MY PARENTS TO NOT YELL AT ME FOR BUYING ONE CUZ THEYRE EXPENSIVE!!!!
The real question is: Is the name "Jeff" an homage to Jeff from 'Scud: The Disposable Assassin'?
6:27 "Questioning the ethics." I see what you did there.
10:51 Kinda like what Ravenholm was in HL2. A horror chapter spliced into a sci-fi/action adventure. I always got the impression that Ravenholm might have been an homage to They Hunger (a total conversion mod trilogy for HL1).
11:08 I see what you did there too.
0:49 bro you blended in so well with the background that I thought you were an npc
3:56 The second you said “Wake up Jeff”, my mind was immediately flooded with flashbacks to my early childhood, watching The Wiggles on TV......
Damn, how long has it been???
didn't notice i was watching a conner shaw video, i haven't watched them in well over a year! glad to see they're still doing well
my index broke when I stil have business with him.. 😕 what a timing
The JEFF chapter is just Alyx's equivalent of HL2's We Don't Go to Ravenholm
You have a weird interpretation of "equivalent"
@@seanbirch What do you mean? They're both more horror focused than other parts of the game and have much more puzzles and introduce new mechanics. Not to mention they're both themed around zombies.
@@sympleton7439 Alyx is more horror focused theoughout. The big difference with Jeff is purely Jeff himself. The mechanics involved him. It’s a total change in gameplay.
Ravenholm changes the setting, but it’s still mostly the sane as the other levels.
@@seanbirch Nah, Ravenholm definitely introduces a whole slew of new puzzles and mechanics. The traps for example are a new mechanic that isn't really present anywhere else in the game.
i hated Jeff so much i almost shit my pants when i stumbled into a bottle
I like your hat! And thank you for sharing how many times it took you to record footage-because that’s something i get burnt out about and now I see things more positively; so thank you 😊 much
Ngl Jeff kinda looks like and reminds me of a bloater of the last of us
He also kinda reminds me of the Demogorgon from Stranger Things
Might wanna add a sheet or something in front of the light. That's a really rough spotlight.
This would make subnuatica fucking terrifying
Lookin' great Connor!
Can’t wait to pick this up when my oculus quest 2 comes in
10:40 - "As a tech demo to show what Is or Will Be possible"
I see what you did there :P
5:46 it took you 5 playthroughs to find that resin and that gas mask?
..what?
Also the wrist pockets are such a small detail but super useful and well played out through the game
Jeff is like a sequel to monstrum. That game loved making loud noises to draw enemies.
I really enjoyed the puzzles when playing jeff's chapter, I was stuck at the part where you had to turn the wheel to open the door trying to figure out how far do I have to toss the bottle to get him to git. It took so long that the fear of jeff just became an annoyance, i figured it out and I was further annoyed that I had to turn back and do the grid puzzle in the same room I trapped him in. At the end I was pretty satisfied, i definitely felt immersed because I actually had to think and not just thinking how I can just cheese my way through. The saddest part was letting jeff go, i knew I had to but he's grown on to me somehow throughout the chapter.
I think I watched your vids of payday 2 at least 3 times, ur in my recommended all the time, I love it
After seeing the behind the scenes stream i can see or even think about the original video
Well made video 👍
The elevator scene is definitely my favorite part of the chapter! I got too close to Jeff so many times when i reached for the button and he gave me so many hugs! And when he sees the head-crab up on the crate he grabs for him, gives him a hug and puts him to sleep! Such a good friend, Jeff! ☺️
NOTE: this comment is obviously a joke don’t harass me about it in the replies :/
the avalanche at 1:29 was awesome!
Please stop relabeling innovative game as tech demos, tech demos also known as Technical Demonstrations are to solely demonstrate their technology sometimes as fun games, but always with the sole intention of demonstrating the technology with the intent to inform.
Half Life has in many ways shown how they have used the advanced technology, but has never actively set out to show how to use it.
They have have however made literal tech demos with the sole purpose to demonstrate their vr technology with “The Lab”, “MoonDust”, and “Aperture Hand Labs”
Just call them what they are, Games.

JEFF make me think of a more modern version of the berserker in Gears of Wars 1. Unkillable monster who is blind, requiring you to be carefull if you don't want it to rush you...
cant wait for this chapter
This part made me glad that I could play this game on the toilet
I'm getting a PC to use oculus link, and I keep watching this vid, it is sooooo good
Oh man oh boy. Tasty video.
The dread that came after i realized i had to get in that freezer was like nothing ive ever felt in a game
Jeff had better development than any character in halo 5
Not really a flex considering the competition
At 4:00 this guy just described Death Stranding
Jeff is the Ravenholm of Alyx
I just realized this description basically fits the big clicker room in The Last Of Us
I still haven't finished that chapter yet, too scary ;(
Good video! Can't help but notice You look like Persona 3 male player character
I have been watching horror movies and played many scary games in my life but haven’t really been jumpscared. That was until I met Jeff, at one point this game made me scream out loud which has never happened before lmao
Epic video
Aye this vid comes out right after I beat the game
A Half-Life themed full-on horror game would be fantastic
Funny 22 jumpstreet man
I remember the pure shock and terror when Jeff sprints into the elevator once you get it by accident. One of the most unique moments in Single Player games
Hey Connor pls do every half life games be a series
This is literally my favorite part of the game because it’s so terrifying. And also cause it’s fun to mess with Jeff :P
You've inspired me to do something very stupid
I found the mask on my first play through. I went to put it on expecting it not to work. Once you work Jeff out he's not so scary. But I still really enjoyed that section of the game.
funny to see that they've now added Jeff to Minecraft after watching this video
Jeff made me sweat enough bullets to supply a large army
Because of jeff i allways Take one Of the gas masks with me at the 2nd Chapter
3 years later i am playing this on the NoVR mod. And to the title...it is true. It doesn't work.
You do get a key to cover your mouth. The NoVR also makes it play just like Half Life 2. But the problem with the Jeff chapter is that the mod is not perfect.....so Jeff gets stuck a lot. I had him stuck in the doorway of where you first trap him. So I had to skip the whole chapter.
Nice video, just got a bit distracted by your incisors cosplaying as the twin towers. Jk lov u , no homo tho
im about to do it for the first time and im scared
Cpt. CPT yea I know but it’s so real
I emptied every single gun into Jeff when I was first positioned above him at the beginning of the chapter, thinking "that dude can't be IMPOSSIBLE to kill. The game is gonna try to trick me into conserving ammo, but if it bleeds, I can kill it!".
Well.
Eventually decided to spare Jeff when he was in the Compactor.
1:22 my first time playing JEFF. Yeah, I’m a very noisy person
There is a third option to the Jeff chapter, after opening to the exit I went back and released him.
Jeff Made me break my monitor trying to throw a bottle LMAO luckily it was an old one falling apart and I had just bought a brand new one.
6:35 Bye bye :D
I'm sadly stuck at the jeff chapter, because I only have a wmr headset and it can't track the controller at my mouth. I can move it there, but then I have to stay completeley still and can't move around at all or the hand will be away from the mouth because its basically stuck in space when it can't see the tracking ring. So I guess I just need to wait until I can afford a lighthouse tracked headset
find a respirator!
i had the same problem but i still managed to beat it?
im like 99% sure holding your breath is not required
@@sticks_stuff It is. If you're near those things with the orange gas stuff alyx cough's if you don't cover your mouth. and if you make any noise jeff will hear you and attack you. and I'm stuck at the first part where you have to go around jeff because these gas things are everywhere and as soon as you stop covering your mouth alyx cough's so its impossible to go around jeff in that spot
@@NicoGamez I just plaayed through the chapter on a quest 2 and had no problems covering my mouth until I found a mask.
Many things in this game could only work in VR, that's the point of it's ingenuity
Was looking for a good video to explain why this chapter is so essential to any gamer's comprehensive VR/Half-Life experience without giving too much away, and yours checked all the boxes. Well done, liked and subscribed.
A bit of constructive criticism/friendly advice -- you seem to fall victim to that tendency that so many UA-camrs do, that is, laying on the "broadcaster" intonations just a wee bit thick. If it's working for you, great, keep it up! Just bear in mind it's a bit of a turn-off to certain cynics like myself. lol
if jeff was real he would be a good way to get rid of trash
i just want the index for alyx and hot dogs and hand granades also good video and 13TH!
Was it just me or was there something thing with the audio, might just be me loved the vid Connor
do you mean that the live action bits sounded different or there was something wrong for the entire video?
For me it just sounded odd for the start of the live action bits
It only seems to appear at the start of the live action bits but quickly fades out
Connor looking like Naoto Shirogane in this one
So what you're saying is... Alien Isolation but in VR would be amazing?
I want it to be a full game. Obviously not just the chapter but a full game with modified mechanics like this
I wish more custom maps had Jeff
jeff the kill- yeah lets *not* call him that
Soma proxy room? That isnt about physics but it's the same concept?
*Me, someone who will probably never be able to avoid VR*: epiquè :3
*avoid*
Insert "My name's Jeff" joke here
Jeff is the start of a new VR game design revolution.
It's up there as one of the best levels of all time with levels like All Ghillied Up, Effect and Cause from Titanfall 2, and Ravenholm.
Fucking Jeff.....that was absolutely horrifying. It was a great chapter and the ending of it gives you so much relief.
Fun fact, you can actually put on the gas mask looking things to not have to cover your mouth to move through spores.
Can you share the song that starts at 0:45?
